ROSSFORD, Ohio — At one time, Rite Aids across northwest Ohio were busy with customers picking up prescriptions.
While many of the locations now sit empty, some cities are working to give them new life.
Rossford is among those taking an active approach. City council voted on Monday to purchase the former Rite Aid on Dixie Highway for $1.3 million.
“Rossford right now is at the beginning of a renaissance for our downtown,” Mayor Neil MacKinnon said, calling the purchase a strategic move.
“That piece is the single most critical piece that is going to be available here shortly,” he added. “I felt the city should get control of it so we could guide and control the destiny of that site.”
MacKinnon says Rossford will pay for the site using tax increment financing. The funds are not direct tax dollars, but rather money collected from future property tax revenue as property values go up in the area.
While Rossford is buying its former pharmacy site, other communities are still weighing options.
In Maumee, the vacant Rite Aid off of Conant Street may remain empty for some time. A city spokesperson said there are "no plans to purchase" the property and that they have not heard of any buyers or potential development.
In Sylvania Township, there has been movement. Township administrator Oliver Turner said Harbor Freight pulled a commercial renovation permit in November for the location at King Road and Central Avenue.
These empty buildings may blend in more easily in larger cities, but they stand out in smaller communities.
Waterville Mayor Tim Pedro said the city's former Rite Aid is a prime location, but city council is not considering purchasing it.
“Talking to the real estate agent, he's had developers talk to him, so I know he's marketing it,” Pedro said.
Instead of buying the property, Pedro said they’re letting the market decide, hoping any new occupant will serve the town’s needs.
“I think our citizens would like to see another drugstore chain come back here,” Pedro said. “It’s already fit for it, so that makes sense as one of the top priorities. Certainly, restaurants are fine, but we’ve got a great bunch of restaurants in downtown Waterville. Maybe a small business or an engineering company.”

ROSSFORD, Ohio — Rossford's Balloon and Fireworks Festival will bring a display of hot air balloons, fireworks, family fun and more to the village in the coming weeks.
Scheduled for July 18 and 19, the festival will be held behind Meijer on Route 20/Fremont Pike near the I-75/I-80 exchange. It is free and open to the public to attend the show, and features a variety of activities and events, some of which are at a cost.
If you'd like to experience the hot air balloons for yourself, tethered rides on both days will be available from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. for $15 per person. Ticket sales start at 6 p.m.
These balloon rides are weather permitting, and include and easy access basket for those with mobility needs.
The Family Fun Zone, located in front of TOCA Soccer and Sports Center, is composed of four zones: Kiddie Zone, Family Zone, Speed Zone and Carnival Zone.
Tickets are $12 per person, per zone, or $29 for all four zones. Early bird pricing is good until July 6.

On both Friday and Saturday, the festival will launch hot air balloons (including a glow balloon), as well as a fireworks display that is set to music.
The hot air balloons will ascend from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. The glow balloon display will happen from 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The fireworks display will occur at 10 p.m.
The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, as seating is not provided.

Parking is free. Drivers should look for event parking signs. A TARTA Shuttle will transport visitors from the Crossroads Shopping Center. Handicapped parking is located in the Rossford Meijer Garden Center.
