Jacksonville drops one spot to No. 5 after its loss to Rose. East Duplin is No. 6, followed by James Kenan at No. 7 and Croatan at No. 8.

UNC heads to Durham this week after earning a road win over previously unbeaten Pitt.
The victory was Bill Belichick's first over a ranked opponent in his two seasons leading the Tar Heels.

Panthers sit atop NFC South
The Carolina Panthers return from a weekend off with sole possession of first place in the NFC South.

Carteret County native Lonnie Chisenhall returned to Cleveland during the Major League Baseball playoffs to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Guardians' Game 5 win over the White Sox.
Chisenhall played for Cleveland from 2011 to 2018 and helped the team reach the World Series in 2016.
Former ECU pitcher Gavin Williams made more history for Cleveland, becoming the first pitcher to allow one or fewer hits while recording 12 strikeouts in a winner-take-all game.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Rear Adm. Robert Christian, chaplain of the Marine Corps, Deputy Chief of Chaplains of the Navy and Deputy Director of Religious Ministries, visits Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune on Oct. 7, 2026.
Christian assumed the duties as the 22nd Chaplain of the Marine Corps in July of this year. The Chaplain of the Marine Corps oversees religious ministry across the Corps, supporting spiritual readiness and advising leadership on religious, moral and ethical matters.
During his first visit with II Marine Expeditionary Force Religious Ministry Teams as the Chaplain of the Marine Corps, Christian reviewed Chaplain Corps initiatives such as overall readiness and what the Marine of 2040 will look like. Christian said, “The Marine of 2040 needs to be a Marine of character who can easily articulate what gives them inner strength for higher purpose.”
Christian noted that a leader’s role in a Marine’s spiritual fitness is just as important as a chaplain’s role among II MEF RMTs. Christian’s vision for the Chaplain Corps program does not rely on one chaplain, but on leaders who are built to carry the mission forward. “What we are trying to do is form a common language when it comes to what doing spiritual fitness looks like,” said Christian. “If we can start to talk about it that way, it’s going to empower the Marines and sailors under our lead to be able to run with themselves.”
Cmdr. Jonathan Stephens, deputy force chaplain with U.S. Marine Forces Command Religious Ministry Team, also spoke during the spiritual fitness brief emphasizing the transition from talking about spiritual fitness to practicing it. “We have developed a common language when it comes to spiritual fitness,” said Stephens. “Now we have to move from talk to walk.” Once the common language has been set in place for leaders to base their own spiritual fitness programs on, those programs must then be actioned.
Stephens identified three major challenges to spiritual fitness: the belief that it isn't for everyone, the risk of it becoming another "box to check" and the potential for alienation when practicing alone rather than in a group.
Stephens believes some Marines view spiritual fitness as inapplicable to them. “We have this opt out mentality,” said Stephens, emphasizing the importance of overcoming this ideology.
The second challenge is Marines receiving briefings but failing to act on the information. “If that’s where it stops, it’s as effective as sitting down, finding out a good workout routine and a good diet sitting in the classroom,” said Stephens. “It doesn’t work that way. There has to be some action that you take with that information.”
The third challenge involves the Marine Corps collective approach to operations. Stephens says if Marines practice spiritual fitness privately, it suggests the concept falls outside Marine Corps culture. “If we treat spiritual fitness like this individual home,” said Stephens, “It sends the message, if we don’t do it together, then this is not really in line with our Marine Corps.”
Using common language for leaders to build their own spiritual fitness programs helps overcome the challenges chaplains and leaders face when trying to implement spiritual fitness into operational readiness. Making a common language for these programs is the first step. To be effective, these programs must be put into action.
The purpose of Christian’s visit with II MEF RMTs was to discuss the future of Marine Corps spiritual fitness and emphasize its importance. Christian wants chaplains and leaders collaborating to encourage Marines to discuss their spiritual fitness. “I would really encourage you, as a chaplain, just be vocal about what gives you a reason to live,” said Christian. “Because people need to hear it, so it becomes an open conversation that we’re happy about.”
