HUBERT, N.C. (WITN) - It has been an intense day of flames, smoke, and fighting it all, as a wildfire jumped containment lines Wednesday morning.
20-to-30-foot flames were witnessed towering behind homes off Inverness Road, even one where a firefighter lives.
For other residents in the neighborhood, the flames were also creeping onto their homes too.
“It was pretty scary, I was at work and my granddaughter calls me and says you better get home it [flames] is at the fence and it might jump the fence,” says Hubert resident Darlene Sweet.
The Crown Point 1 fire has been burning in the Hubert area since it broke out Tuesday.
On Wednesday, fire crews provided an optimistic morning update, indicating that the fire was largely contained until around 10:40 AM when the fire breached the containment lines calling for all hands on deck.
“Last night [Tuesday night], they had a containment line around the fire. This morning they [first responders] were coming back to mop-up some of the area and the wind picked up. There were some spot fires that occurred. Due to the wind, we immediately got resources on those spot fires,” says Onslow County Emergency Services director Bradley Kinlaw.
Kinlaw says about 90 first responders from Onslow and Carteret Counties arrived and worked tirelessly throughout Wednesday, supported by the North Carolina Forest Service and their air units to extinguish the flames.
Around 2:00 PM, Kinlaw says the containment line has been re-established around the fire and crews working to widen it.
The NC Forest Service says they now have the fire fully contained at 100%, but the fire grew from 50 acres to 75 acres.
While some streets are being restricted only to residents, Onslow County officials say there have been no evacuation orders.
Residents shared their gratitude for first responders, with many donating food and water.
“These guys have been out here kicking butt, working hard,” Rodney Beasley, a resident said. “So, if they say it’s 100 percent contained I believe them. They’re the ones with boots on the ground running through the woods and fighting this thing.”
Fire crews plan to stay overnight Wednesday into Thursday just incase any little fires start back up.
