VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Tuesday night, a town hall meeting was held to go over one Virginia Beach business owner's hope to build an arena in the Resort City.
"If my son is sleeping or if my wife is sleeping, I'm looking up information about arenas," said Coleman Ferguson, who announced his goal of building an arena in Virginia Beach back in July.
Since then, Ferguson’s group has filed with the state, received a business license, and is nearing the finish line in starting a regulated crowdfunding venture that caps at $5 million.
Ferguson said he aims to raise the funds needed to get the project off the ground without relying on city financing.
"If we do that plan, we will raise $5 million, and with that $5 million, we would use it to acquire land and fund architects to hit the ground running," he explained.
As of Tuesday, Ferguson has not accepted any donations for the project yet.
He clarified that as crowdfunding begins, they plan to move through tiers over time until reaching approximately $700 million.
"We’ve already talked to potential investors and hedge funds, and potential people that want to be involved in this project," Ferguson said. "If you raise this $5 million, we will have an open checkbook to move forward."
While several renderings have been shown, Ferguson envisions placing the arena next to the Virginia Beach Convention Center on 19th Street.
He said the arena would need about 8 acres, and he's hoping to lease the land from the city.
"We're finishing our proposal that we're submitting to the City of Virginia Beach before October 20, and that's going to be our final proposal to build this arena down on 19th Street," Ferguson said.
To be clear, this idea has not received approval or funding from the city.
Ferguson mentioned that he has met with Mayor Bobby Dyer, and at Tuesday's town hall, District Seven Councilman Cash Green shared his thoughts about the arena proposal.
"I'm very excited that this is going to be presented to the City Council," Green said. "First and foremost, we’ve got to think about how we can keep our tax rate low. I always think if we're thinking ahead five, ten, to fifteen years ahead, then I think we have the council's attention, and this is going to do that."
Ferguson stated they have reached out to the NBA about possibly bringing a team to the resort city for this arena.
He mentioned that initially, the arena would focus on hosting events and concerts.

The injury ended his gymnastics career, but it didn’t end his desire to be a competitive athlete.
When he met Emily Throckmorton, owner of Kaizen Athletics in Virginia Beach, his hopes of competing once again became a reality.
“I compete in adaptive CrossFit, which I didn’t know was a thing until I met Emily,” Bennett said.
Kaizen Athletics has specialized equipment to help athletes like Cody regain muscle and function.
“If he wants to lift a barbell or dumbbells, he’s able to use grips. They secure him safely so he’s able to lift again,” Throckmorton explained.
Throckmorton started the nonprofit gym six years ago and currently trains 50 athletes, many of whom are military veterans.
Kaizen Athletics also serves as a liaison for adaptive sports athletes, showing them what is possible.
“Do you want to do sled hockey but you’re in a seated position? We have that locally. Do you want to learn how to swim again, even if you’re paralyzed from the waist down? We have a facility close by that does that,” she said.
Bennett’s competitive spirit is now taking him to the Adaptive CrossFit Games in Las Vegas this month. Throckmorton will be right by his side as a coach and cheerleader.
“He’s got the mindset that I wish the majority of the world had,” she said.
It’s that “can-do” mindset that will undoubtedly help the Chesapeake teen accomplish another big goal.
“In therapy, my goal is — I graduate next year, so we’re working on getting me to walk across the stage at graduation,” Bennett said.
And we’re betting this determined young man will do just that.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Princess Anne Health and Rehabilitation Center nursing home in the Landstown area is at risk of shutting down for allegedly failing to meet federal health and safety standards.
Some families have spoken to News 3 about their uncertainty regarding next steps.
“I really don’t know what’s going to happen,” Kristi Benson said.
Benson, whose 87-year-old mother has dementia, explained that while it has been difficult to find care, she felt that the treatment her mother received at Princess Anne Health and Rehabilitation Center was a lifesaver.
“Our experience has been good; we’ve been overall happy. She’s thriving there, she’s gaining weight, she’s eating, she’s made friends, so it really came as a shock to our family,” Benson said.
Benson is referring to a report conducted by WTKR sister station WTVR in Richmond, where investigative reporter Tyler Layne found that the nursing home was served a notice that, as of August 27, its Medicare and Medicaid provider agreements are terminated following a series of violations, including some that resulted in residents being hospitalized.
“It's extremely rare for a nursing home operator to have their provider agreement removed," said Richard Mollot, the executive director of the Long Term Care Community Coalition, which tracks nursing home performance metrics and enforcement actions across the country.
Mollot explained decertification typically only happens when a facility is cited with violations and does not correct them in a timely manner. Nursing homes generally have six months from the time they receive citations to implement corrective actions and are given multiple opportunities to regain compliance.
“What this really indicates to me is that a tremendous amount of bad things have gone on in this facility for a long enough period of time that the government has said, ‘OK, we're going to do the last possible thing we can do to save residents and to protect the community,'" Mollot said.
He said a CMS termination could put a facility at risk of shutting down by making it financially difficult to continue operating.
“They're not officially closed, but they're not allowed to take Medicare/Medicaid funds, and Medicare and Medicaid funds take up or account for the large majority of monies that nursing homes get," Mollot said.
The facility has until the end of September to remedy these issues, after which Medicare payments will cease for patients who were admitted before the end of May.
“There are about 40 residents there who are going to need placement, and there are no openings in the facilities in our area. So I’m not really sure what is going to happen to those people,” Benson said.
Benson mentioned that she has received calls about her mother moving to different facilities — some of which concern her due to their current ratings and locations. She just wants to know if any corrective action can be taken to alleviate stress on her mother.
“Every time you move a dementia patient, it’s a setback, like you’re starting over, and they get very upset. Anything to disrupt their routine is awful,” she said.

Princess Anne Health & Rehabilitation Center continues to work diligently with the Virginia Department of Health Office of Licensure and Certification (VDH/OLC) in an effort to do everything possible to allow our residents to stay in their home. We believe a collaborative approach between the facility and state inspectors is the best way forward for residents and their families. Residents who desire to remain in their home can likewise reach out to VDH/OLC. Residents will have a minimum 30 day notice of any action that would require them to be relocated but working together we are confident a just resolution can be had which will allow residents to continue to receive care in their homes. Staff to remain employed and the community to continue to have a valuable healthcare resource.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach Arena Project plans to hold a town hall meeting Tuesday night, where they will share their plans for a proposed 20,000-seat arena.
The proposal aims to bring a 20,000-seat arena to the city, which will host big-name artists and performances. The initiative would be completely privately funded through community investment.
At the town hall, the project will give a presentation to Virginia Beach residents, businesses and leaders on the vision for arena, its potential "economic impact" and "community benefits." After the presentation, attendees will get the chance to ask questions in an open Q&A session.
The project said there will be a list of topics discussed, including job creation, tourism and potential events.
"Topics will include projected job creation, tourism growth, and the arena's ability to attract major concerts, sporting events, and family entertainment to the region," said Coleman Ferguson, the man leading the project, in a press release on Monday.
Ferguson, a Virginia Beach business owner, is advocating for this effort to bring an arena to the resort city.
His organization has released several renderings of the proposed arena, although no companies have finalized naming rights or an exact location yet.
"Our goal is to create an arena that is not only a world class venue, but also a project that truly belongs to the people of Virginia Beach," said Ferguson. "This town hall is about transparency, listening to our community, and making sure residents are at the center of this effort."
The town hall is going to be held at the Gala 417 on 2105 W. Great Neck Rd. at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
