Texas regulators on Wednesday approved a permit for a controversial northwest Bexar County wastewater facility that’s expected to pump an average of a million gallons of treated sewage daily into the Helotes Creek watershed.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality unanimously approved the permit sought by Florida-based developer Lennar Corp. with little discussion, saying it met “all applicable requirements.”
Opponents of the wastewater project, tied to Lennar’s Guajolote Ranch development, have waged a months-long fight against the permit, arguing the wastewater’s introduction into the watershed will endanger San Antonio’s drinking water and residents’ ability to swim and fish in Helotes Creek.
In an emailed statement, project opponents said they plan to file for a rehearing, which would trigger a new process that could push back a final verdict another 55 days. Should TCEQ reapprove the project, opponents would have another 30 days to appeal in Travis County district court.
“We are, of course, extremely disappointed in the commissioners’ decision, as we’d hoped that under new leadership they would chart a new course that truly abides by their own stated mission ‘to protect our state’s public health and natural resources consistent with sustainable economic development,’ ” Randy Neumann, chair of the steering committee of the Scenic Loop-Helotes Creek Alliance, said in the statement. “This decision does nothing of the sort.”
A 2020 study funded by the City of San Antonio found that any wastewater system from a large-scale residential development that released into the Helotes Creek watershed would “significantly degrade the watershed and the quality of water recharging the Edwards Aquifer.”
Roughly 2.5 million people depend on the Edwards Aquifer, which provides more than half of the Alamo City’s drinking water.
Bexar County commissioners, San Antonio City Council or other state entities still could shut down the project by rejecting a special funding mechanism Lennar seeks to fund the water plant, Neumann said in the statement. That mechanism, called a Public Improvement District, would pay for the project using assessments against area property owners.
However, “if the 2.5 million residents across Central Texas who depend on the Edwards Aquifer ultimately don’t get the remedy they deserve, our message will be, ‘See you in court,’” he added.

A TikTok featuring Coyote Canyon, a buffet chain that once had two locations in San Antonio — one on SW Military Drive and another off Marbach Road — was viewed nearly 300,000 times after bringing up an "unlocked memory." The post showed a side-by-side of the SW Military location in 2011, contrasted with its current digs as a Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers at the intersection of Zarzamora Street.
Cue the nostalgic San Antonians in the comments. One local said that the restaurant was their first job at 16 years old, commenting, "Quit & Walked out on Father’s Day. Went to spend my tips across the street at South Park mall," while another social media user said, "Coming from a family of 8, this was our spot… Mm I miss them rolls."
But, it wasn't all rose-colored glasses.
"Me and my whole family would get sick and we would be back for the next special occasion," one local wrote. Another commented, "I just got goosebumps from seeing Coyote Canyon again, and then I remembered the worst tasting licorice you would ever have in your life and even now my stomach is upset thinking about it."

One wrote that KSAT12's Behind the Kitchen Door series, which covers local restaurants' health scores, "kind of ruined coyote canyon for my family." In 2011, the TV news station reported that Coyote Canyon's Marbach location had "failed their inspection last spring and was featured on KSAT-12." However, the restaurant bounced back and received a perfect score. And in September 2014, the SW Military Drive location received 22 demerits from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, which put it within "acceptable" range (the second-lowest category).
When the topic came up in the San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group back in July, there was another mix of nostalgia and "good riddance" energy. One local wrote that "they had the best bread pudding," while another said the restaurant was "trash." Well, you can't please 'em all.

It's unclear just when these restaurants closed in San Antonio, but signage for the location off Marbach was taken down between 2011 and 2013, according to Google Earth images. It appears to have been vacant for a while, perhaps for the space to be converted from a restaurant into the next tenant. By April of 2015, signs for SNG Dialysis had gone up, and it remains that way today. As for the SW Military location, it was up and running until at least July 2014. The next image available on Google Earth shows a "for sale" sign up in June 2016 — and by 2018, it became the Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers we know it as in 2025.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson is seeking a waiver from the state's order on street markings and is creating a task force to propose other ways to celebrate diversity while protecting the city’s funding.
On a City Council message board on Oct. 20, the mayor said he’s working with City Manager TC Broadnax to obtain a waiver. Watson also said he asked a state official about the possibility of getting the exception to the order, which directs cities to remove "non-traffic related" markings on roadways and streets, citing safety concerns.

Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. celebrated the news on social media after a local Facebook page dedicated to tracking new businesses in the Valley, RGV.me, broke the news this week.
“So very happy and excited to finally be able to announce this! Edinburg, Olive Garden is coming to our City!” Garza’s post reads.
But the mayor wasn’t the only public official to celebrate the announcement. Joaquin “J.J.” Zamora, an elected official in the neighboring city of McAllen, chimed in as well.
“Even as a McAllen City Commissioner, all I can say: ‘It was about damn time!’ Congratulations, Edinburg,” Zamora wrote, adding a clapping emoji. Other commenters expressed similar levels of excitement while also calling on local leaders to bring other big-name businesses to the region, including Trader Joe’s, Aldi, H-E-B and Cracker Barrel. McAllen currently boasts two of the fast-casual Italian eateries, including one located four miles west along the same street as the proposed Edinburg location.
The Edinburg Olive Garden will be built within a shopping and dining corridor on the city’s southeast side that has seen exponential growth over the last decade, including a massive plaza anchored by a J.C. Penney, Ross, T.J. Maxx and Academy Sports + Outdoors. Nearby dining options include a Texas Roadhouse, Dave’s Hot Chicken, Chick-Fil-A, Palenque Grill, Taco Palenque, McDonald’s and others.
