It was an eventful weekend for the Spurs organization, as two of the three games in the most recent homestand from December 5 to 8 was filled with moments that caused some tears, but also caused a few birds to go flying. Before we get into the latter, however, the first is something I never thought would happen in San Antonio. But on Sunday, December 8, a current Spurs point guard moved into second on an all-time list that’s pretty tough to reach.
The Spurs clashed with the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday night and came out victorious in a close matchup that ended 121-116. Despite not moving the ball a whole lot in the first quarter, Chris Paul led the charge for the Spurs in the second. And after notching two assists early, at around the seven minute mark in the second, CP3 inbounded the ball to Victor Wembanyama, who drained a three and gave Paul his 12,092nd career assist, which moved him past Jason Kidd on the all-time assist list.
The 39-year-old finished the contest with 10, and now has 12,099 on his resume, with plenty of the season left to play. The celebration came pouring in for Paul after locking up the feat.
The Spurs than surprised Paul after the game, as they posted video from the locker room of the team giving him a large photo collage of him through the years, with an engraved list in the center of every person he’s ever thrown an assist to. And even better, they handed the "point-God" a basketball, with the exact same list of 173 players, on the way to the milestone.
On Monday, December 9, the Spurs also released a video of Paul’s former and current teammates, congratulating him on the accomplishment; which included players from the then New Orleans Hornets, Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, and of course, the Lob City Los Angeles Clippers.
I guess the San Antonio Spurs really do think the NBA referees are number one. Well, at least one player does, and not only did he show it, but it looks like it cost him in the process.
The Spurs took on the Sacramento Kings on Friday, December 6 at the Frost Bank Center in a 140-113 losing effort due in part to not having Victor Wembanyama, who hurt his lower back in the game against Phoenix on December 3, along with Devin Vassell and Tre Jones. However, the focus on the game itself quickly turned, after Zach Collins in the second quarter took issue with a foul call and got hit with two technicals that prompted his ejection from the contest.
As soon as the second whistle came out, before leaving the court, Collins turned to the official and threw out “an obscene gesture” as the NBA would later call it, which cost him a $35,000 fine from the league, according to the NBA website.
Collins was seen in a limited capacity during the Spurs matchup against the Pelicans to the tune of three minutes, but there is no word if his ejection was the cause for the lack of playing time.

SAN ANTONIO, Dec. 9, 2024 – Mays Cancer Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), in partnership with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), is hosting the 47th annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Dec. 10-13.
Owned and initiated by Mays Cancer Center, the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium is the world’s largest breast cancer research conference. More than 11,000 clinicians, researchers, and patient advocates from more than 102 countries are expected to convene in downtown San Antonio. A National Cancer Institute (NCI)- designated Cancer Center, the Mays Cancer Center launched the symposium in 1977 as a one-day regional conference. After more than four decades, the scientific and education symposium has grown to international prominence.
“Every year, we look forward to hosting the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium,” said Virginia Kaklamani, MD, leader of the Breast Cancer Program at the Mays Cancer Center and professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at UT Health San Antonio. “This symposium brings together experts from around the world to share knowledge, learn about new and emerging therapies, collaborate with peers and inspire the next generation of investigators dedicated to breast cancer research.”
Kaklamani is the symposium’s co-director, along with Carlos Arteaga, MD, director of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
This year, the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio proudly celebrates 50 years of cancer care and research excellence in South Texas. Originally established in 1974 as the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, it began as a radiation therapy facility founded by a group of local radiation oncologists. Since then, Mays Cancer Center has achieved significant milestones, including groundbreaking discoveries in drug development, advancing care for Latino and underserved populations and hosting the inaugural San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in 1978, which welcomed just 140 attendees. In 1991, Mays Cancer Center became a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center. Reuben Harris, PhD, professor and chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Structural Biology at UT Health San Antonio, will lead a panel discussion as moderator of an educational session, titled “Tumor Heterogeneity and Evolution” on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, Marcela Mazo Canola, MD, breast oncologist at Mays Cancer Center and assistant professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at UT Health San Antonio, will present a discussion of impactful abstracts titled “Seen and Unseen Toxicities: Improving outcomes,” during the session, “The Heart of the Matter — Improving Adverse Effects.”
Mazo’s presentation will include topics covering the incidence of osteonecrosis of the jaw (also known as ONJ) in patients with metastatic breast cancer who were treated with denosumab every 12 weeks; addressing financial difficulty over time in young adults with breast cancer; exploring the effects of cryotherapy as a way to prevent taxane-induced neuropathy in patients with early breast cancer; and understanding the feasibility of an interactive care plan to help breast cancer survivors manage symptoms and monitor their health after treatment.
Ismail Jatoi, MD, PhD, FACS, breast surgical oncologist at Mays Cancer Center and professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at UT Health San Antonio, will moderate a panel discussion, titled “Risk Reduction and Early Detection: Updates on Breast Cancer Screening.”
A poster presentation, by principal investigator Jessica Treviño Jones, MD, breast medical oncologist at Mays Cancer Center and associate professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at UT Health San Antonio, titled “Comprehensive Approach to Prevention: We ‘CaRE’ Cancer Risk Reduction and Education Clinic,” will display the increasing breast cancer incidences and the shift towards higher rates of premenopausal breast cancer. The presentation focuses on why risk reduction strategies are effective for Hispanic women.
On Friday, Dec. 13, Andrew Brenner, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at UT Health San Antonio, presents an update from his Phase 1 dose escalation study of patients with leptomeningeal metastases, a condition where cancer cells from the breast, lung, kidney or melanoma spread to the brain and spinal cord. In his poster presentation, Brenner displays how single doses of 186RNL were well-tolerated by patients with no treatment-related side effects, showing promises for positive clinical outcomes and reductions in tumor cell counts.

As someone who has worked in the automotive industry for over 20 years, Faith Gray wanted to start a venture that brought people the same joy she felt growing up. With the hopes of providing some fun and nostalgia, Gray and her co-owner Eric Galindo opened one of the first arcades with just claw machines in San Antonio.
Gamers won't find classic arcade games like Pac-Man or Galaga at the new DragonClaw-Arcade on the city's Southside. Inside the vibrant shop, guests will find 19 blue-neon claw machines filled with cute plushies of different characters, like Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked, Scooby-Doo or Peppa Pig.
"I grew up with a bunch of plushies. I love plushies. My kids love plushies. We have them everywhere, and it's just fun, and it brings so much happiness and joy to people," Gray, 43, said.
Gray said she knows the claw machine arcades are very popular in Houston and Vegas. However, she said she noticed there wasn't a huge scene in San Antonio. Being from the Southside, Galindo, 40, knew the first place to open the new arcade was on his side of town. The shop, located at 1121 SW Military Dr., San Antonio, TX 78221, officially opened on November 29.
At the arcade, gamers can get five tokens for $5, 12 for $10, 25 for $20, 65 for $50 and 140 for $100. Gray said customers can trade in the prizes they win at the claw machines. If someone wins four small plushies, they can exchange them for a bigger plush at the shop's counter. For example, 20 plushies could be traded for a massive plush of Pikachu from Pokemon.
DragonClaw-Arcade also offers party packages for any occasion, like birthdays. Gray said they would close the shop down to host it privately for the party. Packages range from $300 to $750.
The owners said they plan on opening another location on 8103 Bandera Rd., San Antonio, TX 78250 near Mainland Drive. Gray said the Bandera location will be larger and have more claw machines. An opening date hasn't been announced as the machines are being shipped from China. When it is delivered, Gray said they will have more of an idea of when the second location will open.
The Southside location is open from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Texas lawmakers are taking aim at people who play the lottery by purchasing tickets online from businesses that will go buy tickets for people who live out of state. The loophole has allowed for massive jackpots, including a $95 million win, to be claimed by people who do not live in the state of Texas.
The Sunset Advisory Commission, a state commission responsible for reviewing government agencies and programs, released a report in July condemning the business model. The commission took aim at "courier companies" that were skirting Texas law, referencing the $95 million win in 2023. A company called Hooked on Montana operating out of North Texas sold $11 million of lottery tickets to Rook Texas LLP out of New Jersey. One of those tickets scored the $95 million jackpot.
SB 79 and its companion HB 389 want to close the loophole and make it illegal for someone to purchase lottery tickets via an app or online, including purchasing tickets for compensation. The bill also wants to make it illegal to "for another person to purchase a ticket on behalf of a person playing a lottery game," including accepting orders for tickets, selling tickets to other people and also to arrange to purchase on behalf of someone playing the lottery.
The bill was introduced to the Senate on November 12. If it passes, it could go into effect as soon as September 1, 2025, according to the filing. The bill was filed by Senators Mayes Middleton, Bob Hall and Charles Perry.
A number of other bills related to the lottery that were prefiled ahead of the January 14, 2025, start of the 89th Texas legislative session.
San Antonio area Senator José Menéndez filed a bill on November 12 to create a new lottery game that aims to benefit the child-care services program administered by the Texas Workforce Commission.
Rep. Salman Bhojani introduced an amendment to the rules in HB 1067 around how compensation is paid to sales agents for state lottery ticket sales to increase the minimum compensation from 5 percent of retail price to no less than 7.5 percent of the price.
Rep. Cody Thane introduced HB 839 to amend the rules around "the percentage of state lottery money paid as prizes to winning ticket holders," adding a provision that states "the payment of prizes in a fiscal biennium may not exceed an amount equal to 40 percent of the gross revenue accruing from the sale of tickets in that biennium." Biennium in this context means over the course of two years.
