ORANGEBURG – Belton-Honea Path quarterback Noah Thomas heard it before he felt it.
Thomas suffered a broken collarbone late in the first half Saturday in the SCHSL high school football state championship Class AAA game and Belton-Honea Path lost to Oceanside, 35-17, at South Carolina State’s Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
Thomas stood on the sidelines with a blank stare and his throwing arm in a sling as he watched Oceanside celebrate.
“State of shock,” he said.
Thomas took a hard hit on a running play, stayed down for several minutes and then was helped to the sideline while keeping his right arm tucked to his body.
“It was a run to the right side. I lowered my shoulder,” Thomas said. “Their helmets went straight to the collarbone. I heard it pop.”
Pop went the Bears’ championship hopes, too.
Thomas offered balance for a team that featured running back Marquise Henderson, a Clemson signee who went over the 2,000-yard rushing mark during the game and added his 26th touchdown. Thomas passed for 1,800 yards and 26 TDs this season.
Belton-Honea Path (13-2) was in the state championship game for the first time since winning it in 2004. Oceanside (11-3) won a second straight title in its ninth year for the program.
The Bears went into halftime already in a hole, down 21-7 and no longer built for a comeback. They did mostly direct snaps to Henderson for the rest of the game and running back MJ Earl was back there, too.
“Everything changed. We couldn’t throw the ball anymore,” Belton-Honea Path coach Russell Blackston said. “We just had to hand it off to (Henderson) and let him try to do it. … They started stacking the box and adding an extra hat. They were wherever we were lined up. They had one more person.”
Belton-Honea Path did make it close for a while. With Henderson in shotgun formation to take snaps, the Bears marched down the field and pushed it into the end zone on a run by Justin Lathon.
An interception by KJ Miles set up a 42-yard field goal by Christian Bridwell and it was a 21-17 game.
“We just had to pound the football,” Henderson said. “Noah is a big key to our football team, but we were not going to stop. In the locker room (at halftime), we had time to say, ‘Let’s keep pushing. Let’s go.”
“They did excellent,” Thomas said. “I mean, this was the state championship. They’ve fought with me all through the season and I couldn't ask for anything more than they did without me.”

ORANGEBURG – Belton-Honea Path football came up short Saturday afternoon in the Class AAA high school football championship game.
The Bears seemed to have momentum after KJ Miles came up with the much-needed interception late in the third quarter, but BHP was outscored 14-0 in the fourth. Oceanside Collegiate came away with its second straight state title win, defeating BHP 35-17 at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
BHP (13-2) was playing in its first state title game in 20 years.
Running back Marquise Henderson for BHP finished with 188 rushing yards and one touchdown.

After a couple of nice runs from Marquise Henderson, the Bears found themselves at first and goal. Justin Lathon ran it in for the five-yard rushing TD. Extra point is good.
The Bears got the ball back with about 57 seconds left in the half, but an excellent punt from Oceanside left BHP with the ball on the Landshark's one-yard line and not enough time to move the ball upfield.
Marquise Henderson leads the Bears in rushing with 80 yards. QB Aiden Manavian for Oceanside is 13-of-16 on passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
After the Bears fumble on the kickoff return, the Landsharks recover and are left with excellent field position. After an illegal hands-to-the-face call against BHP, Oceanside picked up enough yardage to make it to the one-yard line, where Terrence Johnson ran it in for the quick TD. The Landsharks go for the two-point conversion to make up for the previous missed extra point and complete it.

BHP, South Florence, Westside, Dutch Fork, and Irmo Advance to State Championships After Thrilling Playoff Performances
Belton-Honea Path last played in a state championship game 20 years ago.
That’s about to change.
The Bears were involved in one of several big-time games across the state on a chilly Friday night.
Here’s a look at what happened.
The Bears rallied in the second half to topple newly minted powerhouse Mountain View Prep 30-22 in the Class AAA Upper State championship. They’ll play Oceanside Collegiate Academy for the state championship.
Clemson commit rushed 21 times for 159 yards and scored 3 touchdowns as the Bears improved to 13-1. Their only loss has been to Class AAAA reigning champion Westside.
D.J. Barr gave BHP a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run.
But the Stars struck back in the second quarter with Jaylen McGill’s 12-yard touchdown and quarterback Bryson Drummond’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Kaevon Washington.
Henry Phillips added a 20-yard field goal and the Stars led 16-7 at halftime.
The Bears went ahead in the third quarter. MVP drew within 24-22 when Jacobie Smith returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. But the try for two failed.
MVP ended its inaugural season with a 12-1 record.
South Florence was getting wiped out by North Augusta, falling behind 20-0 in the first quarter.
But the Bruins roared back for a 27-20 win to reach their third consecutive Class AAAA state championship game.

Quarterback Messiah Jackson ran for a pair of touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Tre Leonard and South Carolina commit Jayden Sellers also had rushing touchdowns.
The Bruins, who won the 2022 state championship, will now play defending champion Westside in a rematch of last year’s title game. Westside won that one in a 34-32 thriller.
Speaking of Westside, the Rams turned an expected showdown with South Pointe into a 35-14 thumping for their 27th consecutive win.
Armoni Weaver, a senior who transferred from Byrnes, did just about everything. He caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cutter Woods, hauled in a 50-yard reception to set up a touchdown and had an interception return for a touchdown on defense.

Sharode Richardson ran 47 yards for a touchdown not long after the opening kickoff for the Rams. Richardson’s second touchdown broke a 7-7 tie.
Weaver’s 15-yard pick six extended the lead to 21-7. A 1-yard keeper by Woods enabled the Rams to carry a commanding 28-7 lead into halftime.
Dutch Fork smothered Spartanburg 24-0 for the undefeated Silver Foxes’ school-record sixth shutout.
The Silver Foxes, who are seeking their third straight state title, limited Spartanburg to 161 yards. Linebacker Josh Smith, who has signed with South Carolina, led the way with 10 tackles and 2 sacks.
Quarterback Ethan Offing threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Boykin Bickley and a 10-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Smith. Offing added a 5-yard touchdown run and Justin Welch kicked a 21-yard field goal.
Dutch Fork will play Summerville for the Class AAAAA Division 1 state championship.
Irmo last won a football state championship in 1980 when Joe Turbeville was the head coach. The Yellow Jackets now have a chance to change that narrative.
Quarterback A.J. Brand, the Virginia Tech signee who was just named S.C. Gatorade Player of the Year, ran for three touchdowns and threw for another to Donovan Murph as the Yellow Jackets held off White Knoll 29-25.
White Knoll (8-6), which finished the season strong, didn’t make it easy for the Yellow Jackets. Tiyon Fanning ran 66 yards for a touchdown and quarterback Landon Sharpe scored on a 2-yard keeper to give the Timberwolves a 13-7 lead.
Irmo went back ahead for good on Brand’s 31-yard touchdown run.

Yes, Marquise, you're going to the playoffs, baby.
But the path wasn't nearly as breezy as the 28-degree winds blowing profusely at Hillcrest High School. In fact, Belton-Honea Path entered the fourth quarter down 16- 10 in the Class AAA Upper State Championship after only coming up with a measly three yards of total offense in the third quarter.
But the Bears know better than to beat against themselves.
After a 30-yard touchdown reception from Henderson and some key interceptions from Colby Bates in the fourth, Belton-Honea Path defeated Mountain View Prep 30-22 Friday night at Hillcrest.

"I kept telling my guys all along that one of these two teams here are going to make these state championships," said coach Russell Blackston. "And well, we're here."
The Bears had a nearly perfect season, having only dropped a single game against Westside in week four. Henderson, who'd officially signed to Clemson not even 72 hours before Belton-Honea Path's Upper State victory, scored at least one touchdown in every single game.
But could he add three more in a game that would send his team to the state final for the first time in 20 years?
After Friday night, the verdict is yes.
"I told all my teammates, I got them this year," Henderson said. "I told them I wasn't going to let them down. We don't care about another team's record; we know who we are, and that's what we showed tonight."
Henderson finished with 21 rushes for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bears certainly didn't play error-free, picking up six penalties for 60 yards, losing a fumble, and only converting on just over 23 percent of third downs. But despite it all, the Upper State champions have a motto: never get down on yourselves.
"Our coaches tell us all the time that we must know how to handle adversity," said sophomore cornerback Tajeh Watson-martin. "We put our trust in our teammates, we stay focused, and we win games."
Next, Belton-Honea Path will play Oceanside Collegiate Academy on Dec. 14 at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium for the Class AAA state title.
"We're truly blessed. I want to thank God and all of these people who came out here today to watch us win this thing," Blackston said as he motioned toward the sea of Bears fans. "We still got one more game to win. There is still the best to come from this football team."
