If you need a fun day trip to a little park on the shores of Lake Keowee, Mile Creek County Park is a great option. Kidding Around’s Kristina reviews it for us.

Sometimes the most fun day trip or entertainment with your family is a simple little park with a small beach and access to crystal clear water on a super hot day. That’s what Mile Creek County Park is like.

I see parents asking for fun places to swim with their kids in the Upstate and this is a fantastic option. Located on the shores of Lake Keowee, a huge man-made lake that spans several small towns in the Upstate, it has lots of amenities that make it easy for families to spend a day out there.

The sandy beach is small and easily manageable with kids. The swimming area is warm and shallow. There’s a playground with slides and swings right next to the beach if your kids need something else to do besides play in the water.

There is a big shelter up the hill from the beach plus charcoal grills scattered around the park. Clean bathrooms are a short walk from the playground and thankfully have a spout outside to clean the sand off your shoes, feet, and water toys.

If you’ve got a boat, there are three boat ramps available at Mile Creek. And a volleyball sand court and basketball court are on site at the park also.

I have a couple inflatable kayaks we used the day we went and put in right at the beach. We paddled to the island directly across from Mile Creek park and down the small coves on either side of the park. It was awesome.

We saw plenty of people fishing from their boats as well if that’s something you enjoy doing with your kids. Be sure to have your South Carolina fishing license.

If you love to camp, there are plenty of tent sites available. Camping near water is such a fun family activity in warmer weather since entertainment is right outside your tent. Of course, this can be a source of anxiety if your kids can’t swim yet so consider that before making reservations.

The website for the park states that kayak rentals are available for cabin and campground users but you’ll have to contact the park to make those arrangements.

There are also 10 lake front rental cabins with boat ramp access. There is a tiny beach on the lake by the cabins as well. And 69 campsites are at the park as well with both waterfront and non-waterfront locations.

Cabins can fit up to four people and at the time of this writing, are $115 per night. Campsites are between $15-$20 per night. See available campsites at Mile Creek Park at this link.

Seems like everyone wants to be outside nowadays and are taking to parks, lakes, and campsites to fulfill their outdoorsy dreams. This is great. However, it means that you can’t get to an awesome park at Noon or 1 pm on a weekend and expect to get in and find parking. Getting here early will ensure you are able to enter the park and spend a great day, or however long you want to enjoy it, there.

On my most recent trip, I got to Mile Creek park at 9 am on a Sunday and had the place to ourselves besides a few boaters getting in the water. By Noon, it looked like all the parking lots were full. I think there are at least three parking lots at Mile Creek but it’s not a huge place so it can fill quickly, especially on those brutally hot summer days.

There isn’t admission cost per se but there is a parking fee of $5 per car. The booth wasn’t manned the day we were there and thankfully I had $5 cash to put in the envelope and drop it in the box. Be prepared with exact change just in case.

I definitely recommend this fun park and being that it’s only an hour from Greenville, it makes for an easy and fun day trip. We brought lunch, blow-up tubes, water, towels, and our inflatable kayaks and spent all day there!

SIX MILE, S.C. (WSPA) – Customers in parts of the Upstate are being asked to reduce their water usage due to a water main break.

Greenville Water and Six Mile Water District are asking customers to refrain from irrigating lawns and gardens for the next few days.

Jeffery Phillips, with Greenville Water, said the cause of the 72-inch water main break is still under investigation.

The water main broke near the Adkins Water Treatment Facility on Friday, according to Greenville Water.

The water district said repairs to the main should return water pressure back to normal by Tuesday or Wednesday, at the latest.

“We filled up our tanks, we drained the line, we isolated the line, we drained it off and at that point we start cutting into the line then took out the old section of pipe and have been replacing the pipes since then in stages,” said Phillips.

Phillips said crews are three-quarters of the way through the repair work and a new part is en route to the facility.

Because of the issues with water, Daniel High School, R.C. Edwards Middle School, Six Mile Elementary School, and Project GO shifted to eLearning Monday.

“You can’t serve lunches and operate restrooms and there’s just so much that depends on those utilities in order to function with thousands of students coming to school so we just we needed to make that decision yesterday,” said Darian Byrd, School District of Pickens County.

The district said eLearning allows students to still learn without having to make up the day later on.

“They have five days to make up the work from that day because we understand there’s sometimes there’s families that won’t be able to be there with their child or they may have to go to work within the one of the parents or something like that. We need to give them time to be able to make that work up, so we were very flexible with that,” said Byrd.

The district said the affected schools except for Six Mile Elementary and Project GO are planned to return to in-person learning on Tuesday.

GREENVILLE, S.C. —

A South Carolina water department has issued an alert to hundreds of thousands of customers to conserve water after a 6-foot main break.

Officials with Greenville Water said the break happened Friday on a 72-inch transmission main near our Adkins Water Treatment facility.

Jeffrey Phillips, Chief Operations Officer with Greenville Water said the conservation notice was brought on after this weekend’s Pickens County outage in Six Mile. Greenville Water supplies water to that area, Phillips said.

Here is the latest information on that outage.

On Monday, Ware Shoals reported a separate water main break in that Upstate town. Check the latest on those repairs here.

Phillips said crews are working around the clock to repair the Six Mile break.

He said he hopes the repairs are completed by tomorrow morning.

There are no water quality concerns from this break, but it has caused Greenville Water to experience a reduced water capacity, according to officials.

Phillips said the break combined with more businesses opening for the week, warmer weather and dry conditions led to the request to conserve.

“We’re asking all of our customers, ‘Please don’t water your lawns,’” Phillips said over the phone.

He said Greenville Water serves about 500,000 customers, and everyone’s help in conserving water until repairs are made to the Six Mile water main is necessary.

"We are asking all of our customers to VOLUNTARILY reduce their water use by taking extra measures to minimize unnecessary water consumption and high-volume water uses until further notice," officials said in a release.

The release goes on to say:

"All Greenville Water customers are urged, whenever possible, to defer activities which may use large amounts of water including irrigation systems, water features, watering lawns, and washing vehicles until this conservation notice is lifted.

"We will announce the end of this water conservation notice as soon as we have restored our water transmission and storage to normal levels. We anticipate that this should be within the next 72 hours.

"With customer cooperation and conservative water use over the next few days there should be ample supply of water for normal household use during this period."

SIX MILE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - An Upstate native is one of more than a dozen women competing in a pageant this weekend that focuses on the beauty of making a difference.

Eighteen contestants are headed to Michigan in hopes of being crowned Ms. Wheelchair America. This is the competition’s 52nd year, which looks for an accomplished spokeswoman to represent millions of differently-abled Americans.

Kristi Lynn Walden, Ms. Wheelchair South Carolina, is a mother from Six Mile who is an advocate for equality and accessibility in schools.

“I would love to have it where all kids can be able to get around the school, inside the school, outside field trips, et cetera, so they can actually be with their peers,” Walden said.

She uses a wheelchair due to a rare diagnosis of Osteogenesis Imperfecta type III, also known as brittle bone disease. Her 18-year-old son also has the same condition and he is the inspiration for the speech she is giving on Friday night.

“He is my world,” Walden said. “When it’s easy for him to get around, it’s easier on me also. I’m not fearful that he’s blocked himself in between a door, I’m not fearful that he can’t go where he needs to in case of an emergency.”

Unbreakable, selfless, and determined are words Walden uses to describe herself. She said she formed an immediate bond with the other Ms. Wheelchair winners from across the country, who are all fighting for different causes.

“I’m really nervous but the girls have been amazing here,” Walden said. “We’ve formed a great bond.”

The crowning gala, following a week of activities, learning sessions, and press appearances, will take place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Mary Free Bed Guild and will be livestreamed on their Facebook page.

“I would love to bring the crown back to South Carolina obviously,” Walden said. “But I want to leave my mark, period. I would like for each state to be able to take what we’re working on and expand it.”

Dennis Chastain has traced much of the route of the old Cherokee trading path that once ran from the village of Keowee to Charleston, and he has long believed it must have passed through what is now the town of Six Mile.

So when he heard about Six Mile’s plans to restore the old home of the town’s first mayor and turn a big chunk of property recently acquired by the town into a historical park, he wanted to verify what he thought was true about the trail’s location.

After 10 hours of digging through old deeds in the Pickens County Courthouse, he discovered a plat dated 1850 that shows the roads through Six Mile.

One of those roads, running on the same route that is now Six Mile’s Main Street, was labeled “Old Keowee Road.” That was the name used at the time for what is now called the Cherokee Path.

“We finally hit the motherlode last Friday,” Chastain told Six Mile Town Council during a special presentation Tuesday night.

“This is what I needed. This is documentary proof,” he said. “It doesn’t get any better than an old plat.”

“This is a big deal.”

James Atkinson, a member of the town council and representative of the Pickens County Historical Society, said he and other town leaders hadn't realized the old Indian path was part of their history.

“What Dennis talked about tonight is very much in line with our town’s comprehensive plan – preserving the town’s history and heritage and promoting it,” Atkinson told The Greenville News after Chastain’s presentation.

“Historic tourism, genealogical tourism is really, really big,” Chastain said.

“You’ve got a story to tell,” he said. “And that story now involves the fact that your Main Street is on the old, ancient Cherokee Path.”

Earlier in the meeting, Modern Woodmen of America, a member-owned fraternal financial services organization, had presented the town with a check for $2,500, matching what the town had raised toward its historical preservation project.

Chastain, a noted outdoorsman, local historian and writer, has studied the Cherokee Path extensively, discovering a dozen sections of it across the state that have remained undisturbed since it went out of use nearly 200 years ago.

“They looked like they did in the 1760’s when Gov. James Glen marched 1500 men from Charleston, and 200 head of cattle to feed those 1500 men, and 50 wagons,” Chastain said, showing some of the sites in a slide presentation.

At least one of them isn’t far from Six Mile.

A section runs along the old Nimmons Bridge Road, next to a nearby bait and tackle shop, he said.

He also discovered the location of Gap Hill, a part of the Cherokee Path where a battle was fought in 1761 that several places in the area are named after.

And he found the site where those soldiers marching in the 1760’s must have camped, in what is now a housing development near Six Mile called Puckett Mill.

From Main Street, Six Mile, the Cherokee Path ran along the route that is now Norris Highway. Old Pendleton Road branched off toward Clemson. A trail called the Warrior Path ran into the Cherokee Path where State 133 and North Main Street now run together at Six Mile Baptist Church.

“It’s like a Spaghetti Junction of historical roads coming together in Six Mile,” Chastain said.

The Cherokee Path is particularly important in South Carolina’s history – so much so that one of the colonial governors called it “the key to Carolina.”

“He understood that there was a lot more of them (Cherokees) than there were them (colonists), and at any point the Cherokees could literally wipe out the South Carolina colony,” Chastain said. “He said establishing a relationship with the Cherokee was key to Carolina, key to survival of the colony.”

As a result, the Cherokees traded with the British colonists rather than the French, who were pursuing their friendship as well.

“If the Cherokees had aligned with the French instead of the British, we’d all be having croissants for breakfast instead of grits,” Chastain quipped. "So I’m glad it turned out the way it did.”

Beyond the Keowee village and Ft. Prince George, the Path ran all the way to the Cherokee villages of Tennessee, establishing a link between the most powerful Indian nation of the time and colonial Charleston.

It ran all the way through the gates of the port city, down King Street, which remains a commercial center today, Chastain said.

“What do Saks Fifth Avenue and Six Mile, South Carolina have in common?” Chastain asked the crowd gathered in the council chambers.

“Not much,” one observer replied, to the laughter of the audience.

“They’re both located on the Cherokee Path,” Chastain answered. “So already you’re in a different neighborhood than you thought you were.”

“Where else can you go to a council meeting and get a history lesson?” Mayor Roy Stoddard said.
