Home Care Bangor, PA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Whitney Park Historic District gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Bangor, PA is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“Ken Good was so helpful and knowledgable when my elderly father needed in-home care. He actually came to the rehab center to meet us where my father was getting physical therapy after a fall. This way he was able to accurately access how much care my father would need and which caregivers would be the right fit. We were afraid we'd have to move him to a nursing home but fortunately we were able to set up in-home care. It's been four months now and we have been very happy with the caregivers who have been assigned to my father. Always Best Care is very responsive and flexible in adjusting hours as needed, somehow managing to keep the caregivers my parents have bonded with even though the hours have been reduced. We are happy our parents are able to age in place with care as they need it.”

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local The Tarratine or visit Bangor Historical Society, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Bangor, PA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your PA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Bangor, PA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Bangor, PA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Bangor, PA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Winterberry Heights Senior Living - A Sinceri Senior Living Community
  • Country Villa Retirement Home
  • Freese's Assisted Living Apartment Homes
  • Angel Haven Assisted Living
  • Elizabeth Levinson Center
  • Westgate Center for Rehabilitation & Alzheimer’s Care

BANGOR, Pa. - A new spot for healthful, grown-on-site greens is blooming in the Slate Belt.

David Derkits, owner of Bangor-based nuHydro Farms, is expanding the business to include its first brick-and-mortar store at 32 Main St. in downtown Bangor.

Derkits has been operating the hydroponic farm - producing a variety of microgreens - for about a year out of a grow room in his home's basement.

The new store, expected to open by April 1, will be roughly triple the size of the business' current space.

"We've outgrown our capacity," Derkits said. "We're going to be in the Nazareth Farmers Market every Saturday, starting in May. So, that will be a 50 or 60 tray a week grow. With our other clientele, we wouldn't be able to handle that inside the grow room that we built in the house."

Hydroponics is a type of horticulture that involves growing plants without soil, and Derkits outfitted his grow room to include shelving, water pumps and T5 LED lighting. He uses jute or hemp mats during the seeding process.

Derkits focuses on microgreens, which are young plants that are harvested before they fully mature. No pesticides are used.

"Microgreens are basically baby plants, but they're not sprouts," Derkits explained. "We grow about five different varieties of microgreens, which are extremely healthy additives to salads, sandwiches and snacks."

Derkits, who retired from the Marines in 2013, has been committed to following a healthful diet most of his life.

After working for the Department of State in Iraq for eight years, he decided to pursue a full-time career in hydroponic farming.

At nuHydro Farms, he grows and packages good-for-you options such as broccoli, Genovese basil, romaine lettuce, rainbow radishes, speckled peas and a salad mix, featuring arugula, kale, kohlrabi, cabbage and broccoli.

The business' plants are cut between 7 and 14 days old, when they are nutrient-dense, Derkits said.

"When you cut the plant at that early stage, you're harvesting most of the nutrients that the plant has packed inside to help it grow," Derkits explained. "As it continues to grow, those nutrients get pushed around."

Derkits, who lives a few blocks away from the forthcoming store in Bangor, has been growing nuHydro Farms over the past year by delivering the microgreens to customers' homes and also selling them to local businesses such as Local Mama Catering Company.

At the new store, occupying a long-vacant storefront across from Bangor Public Library, Derkits plans to have an educational area where individuals can sample microgreens, learn how to incorporate microgreens into their diets and read about the many benefits of nuHydro Farms' products.

"Microgreens are still fairly new to a lot of people," Derkits said. "People don't realize what [microgreens] actually can do for them as far as fighting cancers and other diseases."

NuHydro Farms, which has a tagline of "growing greens a better way," will have a "deli-style" setup where customers will be able to purchase microgreens that are cut to order (while supplies last), Derkits said. There also will be pre-packaged items.

"We're also looking at maybe doing exotic house plants and other things that can grow hydroponically," Derkits said.

To stay up-to-date on nuHydro Farm's new store, including an opening announcement, follow the business' pages on Facebook and Instagram.

Bangor, PA – On Friday, Governor Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Mike Carroll, and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) Director Randy Padfield visited two locations in Northampton County impacted by recent flooding to survey the damage, meet with recovery crews, and discuss the Commonwealth’s ongoing efforts to support these communities.

Less than two weeks after flooding devastated multiple counties in Eastern Pennsylvania, all state roads in Northampton, Berks, and Bucks counties have reopened, and the Shapiro Administration continues to support the impacted communities through the recovery process.

Governor Shapiro and his team visited the locally-owned Little Creek Road in Lower Mount Bethel Township, which experienced severe flooding impacts. A county-owned bridge over Little Martins Creek was destroyed in the flooding, and PennDOT is coordinating with the county and township to repair the bridge and roadway as quickly as possible. In Bangor, the municipal storm system was overwhelmed by the intense storm, leading to severe damage to homes and property. PEMA is collecting damage reports from the affected areas and PennDOT continues to collaborate hand-in-hand with local officials on repairing impacts to state and local roadways.

PennDOT crews have repaved washed out sections of Route 611/Main Street in Washington Township, and shoulder repairs and general cleanup will continue this week.

Secretary Carroll also made a second visit to Lower Alsace Township in Berks County, after flash flooding washed away a large section of the bank of Antietam Creek, along with the foundation of a nearby building in Lower Alsace Township, Berks County. Crews have been removing debris and completing restoration work along the stream bank.

The Shapiro Administration continues to support Pennsylvania communities impacted by recent flooding, working with local partners and first responders to keep people safe, provide critical resources, and help communities recover.

BANGOR, Pa. - Some of the worst flooding Sunday in Northampton County happened on S Main St. in Bangor.

One woman living there named Genevieve Coval shared cell phone video with us that she took from her front porch Sunday morning as the flood waters rushed down S Main St. and into her basement.

"This is devastation. My yard is devastated, my basement is devastated," said Coval.

As Coval showed us the destruction in her backyard and the mud caking the floor of her basement, she also said she doesn't have flood insurance.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think anything like this would happen," said Coval.

Next door, her neighbor Christina Oliva is in a similar situation.

"All this is cracked here. All this is cracked," said Oliva, gesturing to her cement walkway that is now missing a huge chunk.

Oliva said, as the water rushed into her basement, her son tried to save his belongings.

"He was grabbing whatever he could save, because the water was just coming up, in minutes it was coming up," said Oliva.

Oliva said at the height, the water was almost five feet high in her basement. Coval told us she is now considering selling her most precious possession to pay for repairs.

"I asked for my horses, if they could find somebody to buy them, and my trailer so I could at least have money for the basement," said Coval.

Coval hopes it doesn't come to that, but as crews work to repair S Main St., she hopes someone can help her and her neighbors as well.

"I hope something can be done. I hope they can give us some kind of relief," said Coval.

"It's bad. We need help, we need help," said Oliva.

It's not clear what type of relief might be available for people living on S Main St., but we do know Northampton County officials were touring some of the hardest hit areas on Monday, and U.S. Rep. BANGOR, Pa. - A new weekly event is set to tantalize taste buds and create lasting memories in the Slate Belt this summer.

Quarry Bites & Brews, a weekly food truck night and community event, will take place 5-9 p.m. Thursdays beginning June 14 and continuing through the end of September at 45 Broadway in Bangor (next to Bangor General Store), according to a news release.

The event, a collaboration between Bangor Borough, Slate Belt Rising and Huratiak Homes, which owns the property, will bring rotating food trucks, wineries, live music acts and beer from Richmond Farm & Brewery in Washington Township, Northampton County to a previously vacant lot in downtown Bangor, said Janell Connolly, the event's marketing and operations manager.

The initiative has been made possible through funding and resources provided by Huratiak Homes and the Northampton County Department of Community and Economic Development Hotel Tax Grant Program, along with the support of Bangor Borough and Slate Belt Rising, a community revitalization program that aims to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality of the Slate Belt region.

"We are thrilled to bring Quarry Bites & Brews to Downtown Bangor Borough and help Justin (of Huratiak Homes,LLC) realize his vision for this property in Bangor Borough," Connolly said. "We are grateful to Huratiak Homes, Bangor Borough, and Slate Belt Rising for their invaluable support. This family-friendly event will provide an exceptional opportunity for our community to come together, indulge in mouthwatering food and drinks, and enjoy an evening filled with music and good times."

Richmond Farm & Brewery's new beer truck will offer a variety of its craft brews each week, and rotating local wineries such as Tolino Vineyards and Clever Girl Winery also will set up operations in the lot.

The cozy ambiance will feature fire pits and picnic tables, providing an inviting setting for friends and families to gather and enjoy the evening.

To start, one food truck will visit each week, but that number may expand to two or more in the coming months, Connolly said.

This Thursday's kick-off event will feature food by Momma's Belly Buster (burgers, cheesesteaks, fries and more), music by Billy T Acoustically, beer by Richmond Farm & Brewery and wine by Clever Girl Winery.

According to Connolly, some other upcoming food truck appearances will include Savory Eats (June 22), Lobster Dogs (June 29), Big Papa's (tentatively scheduled for July 6), Savory Eats (July 13), Lobster Dogs (July 20), A Taste of Brooklyn (July 27) and Grateful Dogs (Aug. 3).

"Quarry Bites & Brews is an event that showcases the passion and commitment of Huratiak Homes, Bangor Borough, and Slate Belt Rising to enhance the cultural and economic vitality of the region," the release states. "The collaboration between these organizations demonstrates their dedication to creating engaging experiences for the community."

Residents, others urge state to deny environmental permits for massive Lehigh Valley industrial site

Black-lettered signs reading “No signs in the Auditorium” greeted visitors outside the Bangor Area High School Performing Arts Theater.

“That was just for logistics purposes, so no one’s view was blocked,” said Colleen Connolly, spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. “And we wanted to keep this hearing as neutral as possible.”

What Connolly and other officials heard during Monday night’s two-hour public hearing over a proposed massive logistics center in northern Northampton County was not neutral. Verbal signs of discord were evident, as about two dozen residents and representatives from various organizations urged officials to deny permits for the planned sprawling industrial development called River Pointe.

“I hope whatever you can do to slow down the project and do the right thing will be greatly appreciated,” said Michael Onufrak of Upper Mount Bethel Township, the community where Bethlehem developer Lou Pektor wants to build the campus.

Monday’s Department of Environmental Protection hearing was narrowly focused on an application by Pektor for stormwater discharge leading to the Delaware River and wetlands, and related approvals on part of the development with three industrial buildings totaling nearly 2 million square feet.

But some opponents used the session to renew many of the concerns residents, politicians and groups such as the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission have raised about the project, and to address recent developments.

Onufrak said he and others believe the size and scope of the proposed development is too massive in the mostly rural community of about 6,500 residents.

Those who spoke said DEP, in denying the request, should look at the entire project.

“The site, to me … is clearly incompatible for the intended use of an industrial park of this scale,” said township resident Charles Cole, who is also an environmental scientist and engineer.

Charles Cole speaks Monday, Nov. 13, 2024, during a public hearing held at Bangor Area High School. “The site, to me … is clearly incompatible for the intended use of an industrial park of this scale,” said township resident Charles Cole, who is also an environmental scientist and engineer. The hearing spotlights a sprawling commercial building plan of nearly 6 million square feet in the Slate Belt along the Delaware River. Some residents made emotional pleas.

“This is our home; we care deeply about this,” resident Sharon Duffield said, citing various wildlife that relies on nearby wetlands for survival. The birds and animals, trees and streams need DEP oversight, she said.

“I am concerned about who will be out there verifying what will be done,” Duffield said. “Once things are disturbed or disappear, it will be too late.”

Sarah Hare, who lives in Hope, in neighboring Warren County, New Jersey, noted New Jersey recently announced its intent to buy and preserve hundreds of acres of farmland from Lehigh Valley developer David Jaindl in rural White Township, where Jaindl had proposed building warehouses on the site.

“And now the Pennsylvania DEP has the ability to stop the decisions that could reverse the effects of New Jersey’s step,” she said.

There is urgency in thinking regionally, Hare said.

“Any environmental impacts from construction in Pennsylvania affects residents on both sides of the [Delaware] river,” she said.

Edward Stierli of the National Park Conservation Association, said the full buildout of River Pointe would be the equivalent of 66 Walmarts. He said the association has concern for the millions of people who rely on the Delaware for their drinking water and concern for what the viewshed from large buildings would mean to the region.

“We urge you to reject this application,” he said.

Pektor: ‘vital economic development’

No one from River Pointe spoke, including Pektor, who attended the hearing. On Tuesday, he said in a statement the company has invested millions of dollars and more than three years performing detailed environmental studies and planning. He said River Pointe officials have worked closely with DEP and other regulatory agencies and will continue to do so.

“This property has long been zoned industrial for the explicit purpose of generating tax revenue for the township and represents only 2% of the landmass of the township,” Pektor said.

If completed, River Pointe, which is just south of Portland, would cover about 800 acres and have 12 buildings totaling 5.8 million square feet. It includes eight proposed buildings totaling 4 million square feet in the main, undeveloped part of River Pointe, and two additional ones across River Road at the site of the former Portland Generating Station electric plant that total 1.5 million square feet.

Pektor said the planned development is also allowing River Pointe to dismantle, demolish and remediate the former electric generating facility, which closed about 10 years ago, and “was once the largest polluter in the region.”

“As such, River Pointe brings with it once-in-a-lifetime economic, environmental, and employment opportunities desperately needed for the region and the Commonwealth,” he said. “We look forward to continuing the process and making this vital economic development project a reality.”

At least two DEP administrators were in attendance, including Pamela Kania, waterways and wetlands program director. To one speaker’s comments that River Pointe’s permit application contained 47 deficiencies, Kania said DEP notified River Pointe officials and has provided the developer with a chance to respond. She also said the agency could grant an extension to file revisions, or could withdraw the permit application if River Pointe officials do not respond.

Pektor has said the project, which is near Route 611 and Interstate 80, offers strategic proximity to ports in New York, and New Jersey. He has said this provides River Point the potential to draw large manufacturers. So far, however, he has not named any prospective occupants.

DEP spokesperson Colleen Connolly said comments will be accepted through Nov. 28. They can be emailed to Connolly at [email protected].

She said after the hearing the agency will issue a document responding to the comments and continue to review the permit application. She said a decision could be by the end of the year or early 2024.

Asked what happens if DEP denies the permit, Connolly said Pektor could appeal to the independent Pennsylvania Environmental Hearing Board.

The DEP last year approved a separate permit application by River Pointe that was appealed to the hearing board by members of the grassroots group Concerned Citizens of Upper Mount Bethel, Cole said. He thinks DEP is now beginning to see the development “is bigger than what anyone is thinking, and it’s time to start looking at the whole thing.”
