LAKE ELSINORE, CA — The grand opening of Lake Elsinore's new $31.3 million Civic Center is slated for Thursday, and the public is invited to attend an event city officials are calling "the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the community."
The free-to-attend grand opening celebration will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 1, kicking off with a ribbon-cutting for the new 40,000-square-foot, four-story building at the corner of Main Street and Graham Avenue in historic downtown.
The modern facility consolidates municipal operations, housing City Hall offices, a guest lobby with a reception area, City Council chambers, conference rooms, an outdoor rooftop plaza with views of the lake, and a centerpiece display featuring the city's historic Fire Engine No. 1.
The facility relies on nearby surface parking rather than a multi-level structure. Free event parking and shuttle service for Thursday's grand opening will be available at 184 S. Main St.
The new structure sits adjacent to the current City Hall at 130 S. Main St. Built in 1932, the old brick building with turquoise exterior trim reflects downtown Lake Elsinore's historic architecture.
Incorporated in 1888, Lake Elsinore is the second-oldest city in Riverside County after the city of Riverside, which was incorporated in 1883. Main Street serves as Lake Elsinore's primary downtown corridor, featuring brick inlay along walkways and vintage-style street lamps.
Main Street is also anchored by the Lake Elsinore Cultural Center, dedicated in 1924, which serves as a Riverside County Historical Landmark and currently hosts City Council meetings.
The new Civic Center forms a central component of downtown revitalization efforts. City Council approved the project on May 10, 2022, and construction began in late 2023.

The Ontario restaurant will mark the brand's eighth physical location. Porto's currently operates six bakeries across Los Angeles and Orange counties, with a seventh under construction near Downtown Disney in Anaheim.
While a timeline for the Ontario opening has not yet been announced, development projects for the high-volume chain typically span several years. Porto's locations are known for drawing massive crowds, featuring a multi-counter setup for hot meals, drinks, and packaged baked goods.
Menu favorites include Cuban cuisine such cheese rolls, empanadas, tamales, meat pies, sweets, and many other dishes.

PERRIS, CA — The Perris City Council's unanimous vote to ban data centers in Perris culminated in cheers Tuesday night, making it the first city to implement such a ban in Southwest Riverside County.
The Perris City Council voted 5-0 to ban data centers within the city limits, a follow-up to a ban initiated by the council in June, which directed planning staff to draft an ordinance. On Sept. 16, the ban was also endorsed by the planning commission.
Perris is now the fourth city in California to ban data centers.
A data center is a physical facility that houses powerful computers and equipment used to store, process and deliver digital information, including artificial intelligence. They centers keep the internet and many of the online services people use every day running.
There have not been any data centers proposed in Perris, but many residents who voiced concerns during the city council meeting about water consumption and electricity use, and higher utility bills linked to data centers.
"I think it's great to thank you for not proceeding with the data center. It is our livelihoods. Like me and many others, we go to work everyday. Last thing we want to come back to is that noise of a data center, worse water, more bills to pay. It just gets everybody frustrated," said Christian Sandoval who spoke during the meeting Tuesday night.
"We'd rather be a in great community. We're not a large community but we can grow to be a larger community if we're not always being weighed down by certain things like Flock cameras or these data centers that don't support the community in any way other than making everyone feel like we're imprisoned," he added.
Elsewhere in Riverside County, Coachella is the only other city to implement a ban on data centers, but the trend has been picking up steam in California with Calexico, Monterey Park, and Oakley voting against data center within the city limits.
Data center moratoriums are currently in effect in several Riverside County cities, including Lake Elsinore, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs and Indio.
Councilmember Elizabeth Vallejo said the city's ban will close any loopholes, and the community's involvement played an important role in pushing back against the data centers.
"I would like to thank everyone that's here and really the young people because you guys are making a big example of how you guys can combine together and do something that's right for the city," she said on Tuesday.
"To me, this is also obviously a no-brainer that we all came together as a council, the planning commission, and staff, for really making sure that we have all the wording to make sure that no billionaires, or no one comes and does any loopholes, so this is supposed to close all the loopholes," she added.

The Lake Elsinore Storm will close its final regular-season homestand with three Labor Day weekend games against the Inland Empire 66ers.
Friday’s game will feature Omaha the Bat Dog, who retrieves bats for Storm players during the game. Saturday and Sunday will give fans two more opportunities to see the San Diego Padres’ Single-A affiliate at home.
Youth softball teams from across Southern California will compete in the Triple Crown Sports Labor Day Season Opener.

Southern California country band Redneck Rodeo will bring its high-energy show to Lake Elsinore Casino on Saturday night.

Activities will take place on the lodge lawn from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by live entertainment and Polynesian dancers. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
Because Canyon Lake is a gated community, nonresidents should confirm guest-access requirements before attending.

LAKE ELSINORE, CA — A new Handel's Ice Cream Shop is headed to Lake Elsinore, the city's Economic Development Department said.
The new ice cream parlor will be Handel’s second location in Southwest Riverside County, following its popular Temecula store, and will be at 29263 Central Avenue, Suite A.
The ice creamery began in 1945 with Alice Handel's signature strawberry ice cream recipe, which will soon be available for tasting at the Temecula ice cream store. The shop offers unique fall flavors such as Buckeye, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Caramel Apple, and Pink Champagne. Go for other flavors, such as Lemon Bar, Black Raspberry Chunk, and Peach, so be sure to ask for a tasting sample when you go. This will give Lake Elsinore families "another fun place to gather, celebrate, and enjoy a sweet treat close to home," according to Lake Elsinore City Councilmember Steve Manos, a member of the council's economic development subcommittee.
The ice cream chain is known for its piled-high 3-scoop cones, milkshakes, and delicious homemade flavors. All ice cream is made fresh daily, according to the post. Take it home by the scoop, in a bowl, a sundae or cookie sandwich, on a cone, or in a pint.
"Handel's Ice Cream proudly continues to serve Alice Handel's secret recipes to this day," according to the company.
“Handel’s is a fantastic addition to Lake Elsinore and a business we know our families will enjoy,” Manos said. “Every new business adds to the excitement and momentum building throughout our community. We look forward to welcoming Handel’s and enjoying that first scoop!”
The ice cream shop signed a lease in May for the 2,200-square-foot endcap space at Lake Elsinore Marketplace, near the Costco and Lowe's off the I-15 freeway. According to realtors, this is the first time the property has been turned over since it was purchased in 2020. No opening date has yet been shared.
The announcement is another sign of Lake Elsinore’s growing momentum as Southwest Riverside County’s emerging economic and entertainment hub, according to Manos and the city council.
