Din Tai Fung, the semi-upscale Taiwan-headquartered chain known for steaming baskets of perfectly folded soup dumplings, is no stranger to growth, even in spaces as volatile as restaurants and retail. In 2025, the company boasted the highest average volume per restaurant of any chain in the United States, and it has routinely selected malls as its preferred destination when seeking to expand. That’s a rarity, considering the ongoing closure and redevelopment of many underperforming malls across America.
For its newest opening, Din Tai Fung selected the Brea Mall, bringing classics like cucumber salad and spicy wontons to northern Orange County. The restaurant, its fourth in Orange County, opened on Aug. 7.
Located in the northeast corner of Orange County in the city of Brea, the Brea Mall is a major destination for Inland Empire shoppers due to its proximity to freeways and adjacent counties, including Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino. Recently, the property has been undergoing a massive, multimillion-dollar renovation led by Simon Property Group to turn the 49-year-old mall into a more modern, mixed-use development with ample housing and a breezier feel — part of a wave of mall reclamation projects in recent years. Simon has owned the property since 1998.
The renovation includes 11 new retail and dining spaces, 377 luxury residences and an outdoor plaza. Not unlike many other struggling California shopping centers, Brea Mall has seen its share of closures over recent years: Upon filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the mall’s Sears closed in 2018 — the last of its original anchor stores to close — and was demolished as part of the redevelopment to make room for the 85,000-square-foot Life Time Fitness resort-style athletic country club.
Although Simon Property Group was not willing to share exact financials, the Brea Mall redevelopment costs have been estimated at $300 million.
The new 14,000-square-foot Din Tai Fung joins other well-known concepts like grilled cheese specialist The Melt, popular Cheesecake Factory-owned Italian chain North Italia and San Francisco-founded casual seafood restaurant Pacific Catch as major dining tenants in the newly revived mall. It marks the 11th California location for the brand, which also recently opened nearby in Irvine and has a Topanga location in Los Angeles County in the works.
Cristina Jurado, director of marketing and business development at Brea Mall, calls Din Tai Fung “a highly anticipated centerpiece of our Late Summer 2026 exterior redevelopment.”
“The arrival of Din Tai Fung marks another exciting addition to Brea Mall as we continue to enhance the shopping and dining experience for our guests,” adds Brea Mall general manager Derek Lobato via email. “We are thrilled to welcome Din Tai Fung to Brea Mall and know it will become a favorite destination for both the local community and visitors from throughout Southern California.”
For Din Tai Fung CEO Albert Yang, Brea Mall is a natural fit for the chain.
“We’ve seen tremendous enthusiasm for Din Tai Fung throughout Southern California, and Brea Mall gives us an exciting opportunity to better serve guests in North Orange County who have been asking for a location closer to home,” Yang tells SFGATE via email. In addition to Irvine, the other Orange County Din Tai Fung locations are Anaheim and Santa Ana.
Yang adds, “As a family-founded business, we were drawn to Brea Mall because it fosters connection and community — a place where people come together to shop, dine and spend time with family and friends. The 14,000-square-foot restaurant features a modern, zen-inspired aesthetic that combines contemporary elements with traditional Chinese accents. The space includes Din Tai Fung’s signature open dumpling show kitchen, indoor dining areas, and an outdoor patio.

Din Tai Fung is known for its Xiao Long Bao, which are crafted using an 18-fold and 21-gram process. The restaurant refers to the balance between the dumplings’ wrappers and fillings as its “Golden Ratio.”
Other menu items include Chocolate & Mochi Xiao Long Bao, Cucumber Salad, Spicy Wontons, String Beans with Garlic, and the Pear Lychee Martini.
The Brea restaurant is expected to create more than 400 jobs in Orange County.
Din Tai Fung was originally founded as a cooking oil retail business in Taiwan in 1958 by Bing-Yi Yang and his wife, Pen-Mei Lai. The business became a dumpling and noodle restaurant in 1972.
The family-owned company now operates more than 165 locations across 13 countries. Din Tai Fung entered the North American market in 2000 with a restaurant in Arcadia, California, and currently has 21 locations in the region.

This year, Mr. Jack O'Lanterns provided some of the pumpkins for our display, and I was excited to check out their pumpkin patch in Brea.
The pumpkin patch has much more than pumpkins. There are bounce houses, games, a petting zoo, pumpkin decorating and plenty of opportunities to take cute fall photos.
And one of the best things? Admission and parking are both FREE!

Kids can also visit the petting zoo and enjoy animal feeding activities. If you want to experience holding a baby chick, you can at Mr. Jack O'Lanterns. The staff is so kind and helpful at helping the kids hold a chick in the correct way. It's a fun experience many kids don't get to do very often.
We also loved feeding the animals food from an ice cream cone! There were goats, pigs, and an adorable donkey. What a fun addition for families with younger children who love animals.
One of the activities Mr. Jack O'Lanterns has is pumpkin decorating. This was my daughter absolute favorite activity at the pumpkin patch! Instead of taking your pumpkin home and waiting until later, kids can enjoy decorating one right at the patch.
It's a fun way to make your pumpkin patch visit even more memorable. AND...you don't have to worry about making a mess at home.
The Brea location also offers John Deere kids tractor rides. This is always a hit with the kids. These are separate from the Jack O' Pass, so plan for an additional cost if your kids want to ride.
There are also seasonal games, including Candy Corn Hole, along with photo stations throughout the pumpkin patch.
And of course, all the pumpkins also make a great backdrop for some fun Halloween photos!
One of the nice things about Mr. Jack O'Lanterns is that you don't have to pay admission just to visit the pumpkin patch. You can walk around, take photos and shop for pumpkins without purchasing an activity pass.
