Warren Township Trustees have filed an appeal against the removal of the Leavittsburg Dam.
Since 2019, the future of the Leavittsburg Dam has been debated between trustees, the Trumbull County Board MetroParks Board and Braceville residents.
On Friday, the MetroParks Board closed Canoe City, as crews are set to begin the pre-stages of the Leavittsburg Dam Demolition Project.
Friday evening, Warren Township Trustees filed an appeal with the Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC) to review the basis behind issuing the permit for removal.
In December of 2024, the Ohio EPA approved the removal of the Leavittsburg Dam, however, the decision was ultimately left up to the Trumbull County MetroParks Board.
According to a statement from Warren Township Trustees, the believe the Ohio EPA erred in issuing the permit.
Their full statement can be read below:
“The removal of the Leavittsburg Dam will have detrimental consequences. The Warren Township Board of Trustees has attempted to work with the Trumbull MetroParks Board to pursue alternatives which are safer for the general public. Time and time again, this unelected board has refused to cooperate. As of today, the MetroParks Board has closed Canoe City to begin the process of destroying the dam, ultimately placing a risk to the health and safety ofWarren Township and surrounding communities. The Board of Trustees, in collaboration with the Trumbull County Commissioners and Trumbull County Engineer’s Office, conducted a study, which shows that alternatives to removal are safer, more cost effective, and maintain the structural integrity of the dam.
Through counsel, the Warren Township Board of Trustees has filed a notice of appeal with the Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC) to review the basis behind issuing the permit for removal, and hopefully have it revoked. We believe that the Ohio EPA erred in issuing the permit.
The Warren Township Board of Trustees will not stop fighting to preserve the health and safety of our community. Additionally, we renew our calls for the Trumbull County Commissioners todefund the MetroParks until they agree to halt pursuit of a project which endangers the public.”
