LISBON, OH — Lisbon stepped on the gas early Friday night and never really let off.
The Blue Devils piled up 36 points before halftime, got a monster night through the air from quarterback Grant Minor, and rolled past Waterloo, 50-19, to move to 2-1 on the season.
Minor was dealing from the jump. The Lisbon senior finished 13-of-18 passing for 264 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. He added another score with his legs, accounting for four touchdowns on the night.
His favorite target was Wyatt Newbold, and Waterloo had no answer for the connection.
Minor hit Newbold for a 36-yard touchdown to get Lisbon rolling, then found him again from a yard out as the Blue Devils built a 14-0 lead after one quarter. Newbold finished with five catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns, averaging better than 23 yards every time he touched the football.
Lisbon kept pouring it on in the second.
Devin Kelly punched one in from three yards out, and Minor connected with Jett Vrable for the two-point conversion to stretch the lead to 22-0.
Waterloo finally cracked the scoreboard when Keyshawn Anderson-King busted loose for a 60-yard touchdown run, but Lisbon answered almost immediately. Minor kept it himself for a 17-yard touchdown, pushing the margin back out to 29-6.
The Vikings showed some fight when Anderson-King found Ben Riley for a 25-yard touchdown through the air, cutting the deficit to 29-12.
But Lisbon had one more punch before the break.
With just seconds remaining in the half, Cooper Terdina powered his way into the end zone and Baylen Jackson knocked through the extra point, sending the Blue Devils into the locker room with a commanding 36-12 advantage.
Lisbon didn’t give Waterloo any room to dream about a comeback after halftime.
Minor went back to work through the air in the third quarter and hooked up with Terdina for a 39-yard touchdown, giving the Blue Devils a 43-12 cushion.
Terdina found the end zone twice on the night, once on the ground and once through the air, giving Lisbon another weapon in an offense that spread the damage around.
Waterloo’s Anderson-King was a problem all night despite the score. He piled up 261 rushing yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns, including scoring runs of 60 and 59 yards. His second long touchdown came in the fourth quarter and helped Waterloo reach 19 points.
But the Blue Devil defense got its own trip to the paint before the night was over.
Elijah Brown jumped an Anderson-King pass and took the interception 28 yards back to the house for a pick-six, putting an exclamation point on Lisbon’s 50-point night.
Waterloo simply couldn’t overcome Lisbon’s balance or explosiveness. Anderson-King supplied the Vikings with nearly all of their offensive fireworks, but he was held to 19 passing yards on 5-of-12 attempts and was intercepted twice.
Lisbon, meanwhile, got production from everywhere.
Minor commanded the passing game, Newbold went over the century mark receiving, Kelly contributed on the ground, Terdina scored twice, and Brown slammed the door with a defensive touchdown.
That’s a pretty good recipe for hanging 50 on the board.
After dropping 50 points in a Week 2 loss at Lowellville, Lisbon flipped the script in Week 3 and put 50 of its own on the scoreboard.
The Blue Devils improve to 2-1 and will stay home next Friday when East Palestine comes to town.
Waterloo falls to 1-2 after the loss.
