EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio — The Community Resource Center in East Liverpool is hosting a ‘turning awareness into action’ luncheon every Wednesday this month.
From noon-2 p.m., the event offers more than just a meal -- it’s a space for education, support, and conversation.
Each luncheon focuses on critical conversations surrounding mental health, from anxiety and depression to suicide prevention and coping strategies.
"What we are offering is a safe place,” said Denise Taylor, executive director, Community Resource Center. “And when you walk across that door, you’re in a safe space. We’re going to talk about the issues that you can’t talk about with everybody else.”
Mental health professionals and support agencies are on site each week, ready to answer questions, offer guidance, and set up appointments.
"We will have people that will be here that if you need to set up maybe an appointment or need to know which avenue you need to go down, we will have it,” Taylor said. “Every resource that you need to make your life better will be here."
Organizers say it’s time to break the silence.
"We said it’s time to break the stigma,” social worker Avis Santiago said. “It’s time to start talking about issues.
"Depression needs to be talked about, anxiety needs to be talked about, suicide needs to be talked about. All of those things need to be talked about. That’s the only way we’re going to start healing."
Organizers say you don’t need to bring anything. Just show up.
The resource center plans to continue hosting some sort of mental health awareness event once a month, after the month of May.
“You walk through those doors at the community resource center at 940 Pennsylvania Ave., in East Liverpool ask for Miss Denise and you’re gonna get help. And if I don’t know how to give it to you, I’m going to make sure that you get it," Taylor said.
