Desert Racer, Nick Badovinus’s Fast Casual Spot in Lower Greenville, Closes

Lower Greenville loses a large patio as Desert Racer announces its closure. “Well, it’s been a great run, but we have reached the finish line,” a message on its website reads. It directs diners to join them at Surf Camp, the outdoor patio on top of Nick Badovinus’s East Quarter (has that neighborhood name taken off yet?) restaurants ...

Desert Racer opened in December 2019, just before Badovinus closed Off-Site Kitchen at Trinity Groves and moved its famous burger to Desert Racer’s menu along with an array of Tex-Mex dishes and margaritas. It lasted two months before COVID shut it down, only to return, along with all of his other restaurants, in May 2020. The space was positioned to be an excellent option during the height of the COVID pandemic, with a massive 8,000-square-foot patio. “Whatever comes out for the restaurant business on the back side of it is going to be completely different from what it was before,” Badovinus told D magazine. And that was true; his more expensive restaurants appear to be flourishing and most of his fast casual spots, from pizza to burgers to Tex-Mex patios, have vanished.

That’s got to say something about hospitality in Dallas, but we’re still parsing what.

Rosewood Mansion gets a new chef

There’s a new top dog in the kitchen at the Mansion. Charles Olalia joins as executive chef, leaving a position as culinary director of Makeready Experience, a group that manages independent hotels and restaurants across the country, including the Adolphus and its associated restaurants and bars in Dallas. He began his career at Ritz Carlton, Half Moon Bay and has worked at Restaurant Guy Savoy in Caesar’s Place, the French Laundry, and now-closed Coi. Olalia is Filipino and trained in French culinary skills, and has added a few dishes to the menu, including pate en croute, ahi tuna crudo, and lobster thermador. If it’s been a minute since you lunched at the Mansion or hit the bar, perhaps it’s time to return.

Bonton Farms gets a million bucks from MacKenzie Scott

Yeah, you read that correctly. The urban farm that supplies many of your favorite restaurants with food and is helping to fill the void in the food desert of South Dallas was given one of MacKenzie Scott’s million-dollar donations, the Associated Press reports. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has been slowly giving away her estimated $40 billion fortune and opened donations to applicants for the first time with this round. Bonton Farms was one of 361 organizations to get some of the $640 million Scott donated. Scott’s donations come with no strings or directions and are for the organizations to use as they see fit.

Martin’s Wine Bistro reopens in Old East Dallas

We love it: St. Martin’s Wine Bistro has reopened on 4223 Bryan Street. The piano players, wine, and highly specific vibes are back. The Greenville Ave. location closed in May 2023 after 46 years in business. Owner Mohsen Heidari gave the restaurant to his sons, Pasha and Sina, who also run Bowen House, Las Palmas Tex-Mex, Mike’s Gemini Twin Lounge, and the pair recently took over Urbano Cafe, CultureMap Dallas reports. They have partnered with their uncle, Omid Haftlang, who runs the day-to-day.

Stop in for nachos, a giant assortment of taco plates, and a more expansive dessert menu than every other spot in town combined.

Tex-Mex comes to Lake Highlands at this neighborhood spot owned by the McBride Family. Go for a family favorite plate for a combination of enchiladas and tacos in a wide variety of sauces and types of meat. The fajitas are also a great order.

Open since 1981, this Oak Lawn eatery touts former presidents, Dallas Cowboys players, and celebrities among its biggest fans. It’s since moved to Lemmon Avenue, where the brisket enchiladas and chile rellenos are as perfect as they’ve always been.

This Maple Avenue staple has been slinging Tex-Mex eats for more than two decades and, in that time, has earned a devoted legion of fans. Brisket-stuffed chile rellenos, chicken mole, and combo plates like Anita’s Plate (soft taco, cheese enchilada, beef taco) await.

One of DFW’s favorite Tex-Mex destinations, E Bar boasts consistently enjoyable renditions of beloved dishes, ranging from breakfast options like huevos con chorizo to dinner plates loaded with tacos de carnitas, cheese enchiladas, and crispy flautas.

If an expansive Tex-Mex menu is what you seek, this is the place. Everything under the sun seems to be available in a real “I want it, I got it” moment. From a ritzy (and pricey) dish of scallops with lobster rice and morita salsa to an array of Mexican pizzas, this place leans heavily on Acapulco-style dishes with a heavy seafood bent and strong Americanized options.

But one Texas team, No. 1 seed Houston, is headed to Dallas after knocking off Texas A&M in a thriller on Sunday night.

Houston will take on Duke in the Round of 16 at American Airlines Center on Friday.

The other Sweet 16 game features No. 2 Marquette vs. No. 11 NC State.

A major increase in traffic is expected as Texans and visitors across the state travel to witness the rare total solar eclipse on April 8.

Texas will be center stage for this rare event. It will be the first total solar eclipse over Texas since 1878, and the last total eclipse viewable from the U.S. until 2045, scientists say.

According to TxDOT, with 480 miles of Texas within the path of totality, there could be heavy traffic before, during and after the event. Multiple state agencies are working together to prepare for emergency response and increased traffic.

“Many Texans will be able to see a total solar eclipse from their backyards,” said Matthew Heinze, TxDOT emergency management coordinator. “And residents of neighboring states and other counties will travel here to see it, resulting in additional vehicles on state roads. Projections say there could be up to a million people who travel to, through and within Texas to get to the path of totality to see the eclipse.”

TxDOT says they have been planning a statewide operation for two years to ensure traffic flows as smoothly and safely as possible.

According to NASA, the path of the eclipse continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse

Several Texas cities will be in the path of totality, including Dallas, most of Fort Worth, Waco, Temple, most of Austin and parts of San Antonio. Denton is outside the path of totality.

In Dallas, the moon will begin to cover the sun around 12:23 p.m., with totality beginning around 1:40 p.m. and ending just under 4 minutes later. The moon will then move away from the sun, with the spectacle ending around 3:02 p.m. Exact timing will depend on location in the metroplex.

This contest will find the bois in Victory Green™ taking on Sidney Crosby and the Pens – a team that’s maybe not having the best of seasons, either on or off the ice. Still, Crosby is one of the NHL’s all-time greats, and the chance to see him in person – and with the Stars needing every last win they can get at this point to improve their playoff seeding, no less – is always a worthwhile endeavor. He’s ending his month-long national tour that’s celebrating the 20-year anniversary of his debut “Calendar Days” LP with a show a Trees, one of the Deep Ellum venues where he cut his teeth as a performer. Following Thursday’s semifinal games featuring USA vs. Jamaica and Panama vs. Mexico, Sunday’s slate will allow attendees to watch the third-place match at 5 p.m. before an 8:15 p.m. finals matchup.
