North Texas chalked up another corporate headquarters move from California yesterday when Kelly-Moore Paints—a leading manufacturer and retailer of premium paints and coatings in the U.S.—announced that it will move its HQ from Northern California to Irving this year.

“We’re excited to join the Irving-Las Colinas community and to offer our employees a great quality of life in a vibrant city,” Kelly-Moore CEO Charles Gassenheimer said in a news release.

Gassenheimer told Dallas Innovates that Kelly-Moore is moving 30 employees from California and from its manufacturing facility in the DFW suburb of Hurst to support the Irving HQ’s operations. “We plan to grow the workforce in Las Colinas by an additional 40 people over the next two years,” he added.

The HQ move, and Kelly-Moore’s expanded focus, could lead to more activity at the plant in Hurst, the CEO says.

“We’re expanding beyond the contractor channel, where we’ve always been strong, to focus on bringing our high quality products to other channels, like interior design and architecture,” Gassenheimer said. “Through growing our footprint, we’ll be able to increase the total gallons produced each year and therefore more fully utilize our Hurst manufacturing plant.”

In our Q&A below, Gassenheimer talks about how his company has evolved in recent years, how it’s reducing its environmental footprint, incorporating innovation into its product development, and more.

The headquarters relocation comes after the company moved its state-of-the-art manufacturing operations to Hurst in 2017. That facility produces technologically advanced paint products with an eye on conservation. Kelly-Moore was recognized in 2022 for reduction of wastewater pollution with the Governor’s Texas Environmental Excellence Award for Pollution Prevention, presented by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

“The Hurst Manufacturing facility is the engine of our company,” Gassenheimer said in the statement. “Locating our corporate headquarters nearby enables even better production and innovation. The combination of our 157 retail stores in Northern California and the Southwest, aligned with excellence in manufacturing and distribution out of this centralized Texas base, is a formula for Kelly-Moore’s ongoing national success.”

In his comments, the CEO suggested that his company already feels at home in North Texas.

“Since centralizing our multiple manufacturing facilities in Hurst, Kelly-Moore has enjoyed all that the North Texas community offers, and we look forward to increasing our engagement with the local community,” Gassenheimer added. “I want to express my gratitude to the City of Irving, to Koa Partners, and to the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber for their support of our future in Irving-Las Colinas.”

The move was supported Thursday night as the Irving City Council voted to approve $75,000 in economic incentives for the new headquarters that will occupy 15,000 square feet of Class A office space at 500 E. John Carpenter Freeway.

The Kelly-Moore office space will be leased from the building’s owner, commercial real estate firm Koa Partners.

“We could not be happier about welcoming Kelly-Moore Paints to our building as we serve them alongside other growing companies like Neighborly and U.S. Oral Surgery Management,” Koa Partners CEO Harry Lake said in a statement.

Lake told Dallas Innovates that Kelly-Moore’s new HQ home in Las Colinas “benefits from significant investments in the amenities that our tenants have asked for, and we have provided, to make our building a truly high-performing building that supports their productivity at a tremendous value.” He emphasized “the overall quality of life” in the region, which results in “a highly talented pool of people to engage with as these world class organizations grow their business and reinforce their respective culture for the long term.”

“In addition to proving high-performing space at a great value, we have to provide them with additional support like anyone would when welcoming a neighbor to the community,” Lake added, including “places to live, eat, entertain, play, shop, exercise, educate, heal…all these things have always mattered, but now they’re highlighted as companies compete for the very best talent. Our job at Koa is to provide real estate solutions for them to compete effectively and efficiently.”

Irving Mayor Rick Stopfer added his own welcome.

The city works closely with its partners at the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber to target specific industries such as finance, healthcare, life science, professional services, and industrial technology. This focus is reflected in their recent successes in attracting “headquarter wins” such as Caterpillar and CHRISTUS, he says.

Kelly-Moore Paints was founded in 1946 and is one of the nation’s largest independent paint companies, with over $340 million in annual revenues and over 1,200 employees.

The company sells 90% of its products to professional paint contractors and other trade professionals. Kelly-Moore said their end customers include residential homeowners, property developers, homeowners’ associations, and other large organizations.

In October 2022, Kelly-Moore Paints was acquired by an affiliate of Flacks Group, a global investment firm based in the United States.

For example, we’ve made the decision to switch to plastic cans to deliver our products to market. This represents a significant cost savings, but also our can manufacturer uses 90% recycled plastics to make these paint cans. We view this as a double win!

Kate Hurst, the 2023 World Junior Champion in the 1500 free, changed her verbal commitment to the University of Texas for the fall of 2024. She initially committed to Northwestern University in October 2022. Notably, that commitment came before Northwestern replaced a good portion of their coaching staff this summer, with former head coach Katie Robinson, associate head coach Andrew Hogdson, and assistant Kim Williams leaving the program. In turn, Northwestern has named Rachel Stratton-Millis as head coach and Margaret Howe and Jacob Siar as assistants.

Last Tuesday, Hurst was named onto the 2023-24 U.S. National Team for the 1500 free.

In SwimSwam’s rankings for the high school class of 2024, Hurst was put in the “best of the rest” category. However, she had a massive summer in long course to make herself one of the top swimmers in her class.

At the 2023 World Junior Championships, Hurst won the 1500 free by nearly nine seconds, posting a time of 16:09.37. That time is considerably faster than her short course 1650 free best time (which was set in March 2022), indicating that she could have some big yards time drops coming soon. Hurst’s mile time has her ranked 4th in the United States for 2023, and 3rd amongst active swimmers (Kensey McMahon, who is ranked third in the U.S. for the mile, said that she has put swimming “on pause”). She is also ranked 12th in the nation for the 800 free.

Although Katie Ledecky and Katie Grimes have dominated the 1500 free amongst American women, Hurst’s times this year make her a dark horse candidate for 2024 U.S. Olympic team qualification. In one season, she improved from a time of 16:37.22 to 16:09.37 in the 1500 free, from 8:45.83 to 8:34.11 in the 800 free, and from 4:15.49 to 4:11.71 in the 400 free.

In the fall of 2024, Hurst will join a long list of prominent female distance swimmers in Texas. Some of them include 2023 U.S. Worlds team members Jillian Cox and Erin Gemmell, as well as 2020(1) Olympic silver medalist Erica Sullivan. She is also the fourth major Texas recruit in her class, following #10 and World Juniors medalistPiper Enge, #16 Lillie Nesty, and “honorable mention” Campbell Chase.

Had Hurst stayed committed to Northwestern, she would have been arguably one of the best recruits in the history of the women’s team—a World Junior Champion and a U.S. National Team member would have been a huge boost to a team that has only had one Big Ten title winner since 2008.

Hurst is from Hillsdale, New Jersey and competes for the Scarlet Aquatic Club.

A Texas medical marijuana business is looking to expand access to prescription cannabis in the Metroplex.

Texas Original, a medical cannabis producer, is opening a location in Hurst, where patients who qualify for the Texas Compassionate Use Program can pick up prescribed marijuana.

The site at 760 Airport Freeway, Suite 300 D, opens Wednesday.

“This is simply one of the many steps right now that we’re working toward our mission, which is increasing access for Texans,” said Nico Richardson, the CEO of Texas Original. “Hurst was an obvious location. We have a very loyal and growing patient base within the direct Hurst area but also obviously within North Texas from Dallas, through to Fort Worth.”

Texas allows for use of low-THC cannabis to treat certain medical conditions, such as epilepsy, seizures, cancer and post traumatic stress disorder. In recent legislative sessions, there has been a push to expand Texas’ medical marijuana program to chronic pain when an opioid would otherwise be prescribed, but the effort has been unsuccessful.

Texas law is tough on marijuana offenses including illegal recreational use, including when purchased in neighboring states.

The new pickup site in Hurst will be a more permanent location for patients who currently have to either drive to Austin, have their prescriptions delivered to their homes, or stop by North Texas sites that are not open daily. These sites are in Frisco, Fort Worth, North Dallas, Addison and Arlington.

The Hurst location is Texas Original’s third permanent pick up site, in addition to Houston and its Austin dispensary where the cannabis is grown and products manufactured. The Hurst site initially will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with plans to open six days a week in the coming months.

The Hurst location is not a dispensary where products are stored on site for inspection or immediate pickup. Instead customers would be able to place orders by phone or online, and then pick up their prescription during operating hours, Richardson said.

“Think of it almost as walking into CVS and getting your prescription and walking out,” he said.

Texas Original is covering one year’s worth of prescription costs for the first 75 Texas Compassionate Use Program qualifying patients who visit the Hurst site.

United Memorial Medical Center has filed paperwork with the state to build a 23-bed hospital in Hurst. The Houston-area hospital operator has four locations, and this will be its first expansion into North Texas.

UUMC has three acute care hospitals throughout Houston and one in Sugarland. According to the application with the state to operate a hospital, the UMMC Mid-Cities Hospital is eligible to participate in the Medicare program. It will not be physician-owned but is a for-profit facility. The application says it will be a general hospital with surgery, X-ray, clinical laboratory, and emergency department services. The facility will not treat obstetrics, mental health, or pediatric issues. According to the paperwork, the hospital will have 23 medical surgery beds and one emergency department bed.

In 2022, Becker’s Hospital Review reported that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services terminated the UUMC Medicare contract for failing to meet specific health and safety standards, but the hospital said it would continue to treat Medicare patients without being reimbursed. Houston’s Fox 26 reported on a CMS letter from 2021 describing operating rooms with rusted equipment, dirty cabinets with debris, cockroaches, an open floor drain that allowed pests to access the OR, staff without proper certifications, and poor infection control methods. The Houston Chronicle reported that the system replaced its governing board following the CMS incident.

According to The Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade, UMMC’s main campus in Houston received an F, its North campus received a D, and its Sugarland location received an F in the most recent ratings. Much of the data from these hospitals was unavailable, meaning UMMC could not receive a numerical score in the Leapfrog ratings. The main campus’ score suffered from below-average ratings in several categories, including falls, collapsed lungs, blood leakage, accidental cuts and tears, blood infections, sepsis infection, communication, safe medication administration, responsiveness, and others. According to the American Hospital Directory, that campus is staffed for 151 beds and has a one-star patient experience rating.

UMMC – Mid Cities Hospital is planned for the address where St. Camillus Medical Center once was. St. Camillus appears to be closed, but the website is still up and running—the phone number for the hospital results in a busy signal. St. Camillus’ leadership from the hospital did not respond to attempts to contact them.

UMMC-Mid Cities Hospital will be located 2.5 miles east of Medical City North Hills, which has 157 staffed beds, and just under five miles west of Texas Health Hurst-Euless-Bedford, which has 251 staffed beds, according to the American Hospital Directory.

According to the application, UMMC’s CEO will be Syed Mohiuddin, who the Indo-American News called an “accomplished businessman and entrepreneur” before beginning his role in leadership at UMMC. Leadership at UMMC did not respond to questions about the hospital before deadline.
