NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The pilot of a single-engine plane that crashed near downtown Nashville told air traffic controllers he could see the runway they were clearing for an emergency landing. But he said he couldn’t reach it.
“I’m going to be landing — I don’t know where!” the pilot said before the plane crashed alongside Interstate 40, killing all five people aboard.
The pilot had another adult and three children on board, National Transportation Safety Board investigator Aaron McCarter said at a Tuesday news conference. He said the five were Canadian citizens and the agency is working with the Canadian government to determine their identities.
He said it is too early to know what caused the crash. Investigators do not yet know the pilot’s qualifications or how many flight hours he had, but his experience is one of the things they will be investigating.
The pilot radioed air traffic controllers at around 7:40 p.m. Monday reporting that his engine had shut down. He said he had overflown John C. Tune airport, just west of downtown, at 2,500 feet and had circled around in an attempt to land, according to a recording of their radio transmissions.
They cleared runway two at the airport, and urged him to glide the plane down. But the plane had already descended to 1,600 feet (488 meters) by then, he said.
“I’m too far away. I’m not going to make it,” he said.
That was the last they heard from the plane, which dropped off radar as it lost altitude.
The plane crashed as Matthew Wiser was driving on the interstate, and he posted a photo of the fiery wreckage on social media.
“I saw an airplane essentially crash out of the sky, fall out of the sky, and hit the ground at around a 45 degree angle,” Wiser said in a phone interview. “When it hit the ground, there was a 30 to 40 foot explosion of fire. And all of the traffic on the interstate stopped and kind of processed what they saw.”
Air traffic controllers then directed a helicopter crew to survey the approach to the airport in search of the plane, while keeping other aircraft out of the emergency area. Within minutes, a flood of emergency vehicles were speeding to the scene, Wiser said.
They discovered that the plane burst into flames in the grass, just off the highway and behind a Costco on the city’s westside, about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) south of the general aviation airport.
There were no injuries to drivers on the interstate, Nashville Fire Department spokesperson Kendra Loney said. Authorities said no vehicles or buildings on the ground were damaged.
The plane referred to in the radio recordings was a Piper PA-32R, made in 1978 and based in Ontario, according to Canada’s civil aircraft registry.
The flight originated in Ontario and made stops along the way that were likely to gas up, including in Erie, Pennsylvania, and Mount Sterling, Kentucky, McCarter said. Before the pilot radioed in the emergency, the plane had been on a normal flight track with no mechanical irregularities reported while it flew in from the Kentucky airport, McCarter added.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. McCarter said they packed up the wreckage for transport to a facility in Springfield, Tennessee, where the plane will be reassembled.
Investigators do not know why the pilot decided to circle the airport before the crash, he said. He mentioned that the plane’s approach was perpendicular to the interstate when it hit the ground.
The NTSB will have a preliminary report out in about 10 days. The full report will take about nine months.

That will no longer be a possibility, as late Friday night, the Tennessee Titans came to an agreement with the Chiefs to acquire Sneed in a trade.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Titans are sending a 2025 third-round pick and are swapping 2024 seventh-round picks with the Chiefs in return for Sneed. Beyond that, the Titans have reportedly agreed to a four-year, $76 million deal ($19 million/year) contract extension with a whopping $55 million of that guaranteed.
Those trade terms are less than most projections prior to free agency, as most expected at least a second-round pick in return. Additionally, the $19 million a year average is actually less than the value of Sneed’s deal on the franchise tag (one year, $19.8 million). Still, with $55 million guaranteed on a four-year deal, this is a massive contract for Sneed, who now ranks tied for sixth in average per year among NFL cornerbacks, but first in overall guarantees (if initial reports are accurate). For comparison’s sake, Chicago Bears’ Jaylon Johnson signed a nearly identical four-year, $76 million deal this offseason but with “just” $43.8 million guaranteed.
As for the Lions, they made more modest moves to overhaul their cornerback room. They traded a third-round pick to get Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis and a pair of late-round picks in return. Though the trade terms are similar to what landed Sneed for the Titans, the Lions inherited just a one-year, $14.5 million contract for Davis, which has since been restructured to lower the cap hit in 2024.
In addition to that move, the Lions also signed free agent Amik Robertson and re-signed Emmanuel Moseley. But with the sudden release of Cameron Sutton following an alleged domestic battery incident, the Lions may still be in the market to add to their cornerback room.

The Kansas City Chiefs are finalizing a deal to send star cornerback L'Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday night.
The Chiefs are expected to receive a 2025 third-round pick, in addition to a 2024 seventh-round pick swap, for Sneed, who will sign a new contract with Tennessee, sources said.
Sneed and the Titans have the framework of an agreement that they have been working on for days, sources told Schefter. It will be formalized after Sneed passes his physical and will make him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in NFL history.
A source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that Sneed's new deal will be for four years.
The Chiefs placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on Sneed earlier this month. That allowed him to talk to other teams, who then could work out a trade with the Chiefs.
The Titans already signed veteran cornerback Chidobe Awuzie to a three-year, $36 million deal at the start of free agency. Sneed and Awuzie will become the outside cornerbacks with Roger McCreary as the nickel as the Titans contend with quarterbacks C.J. Stroud, Trevor Lawrence and Anthony Richardson in the AFC South.
Sneed joins a list of key Titans acquisitions this offseason that includes linebacker Kenneth Murray. General manager Ran Carthon signed center Lloyd Cushenberry and guard Saahdiq Charles to shore up the offensive line. And the offense also got a boost when Carthon added wide receiver Calvin Ridley and running back Tony Pollard.
In 2023, Sneed had by many measures his best season since he joined the Chiefs as a fourth-round draft pick in 2020. He covered the opponents' top receiver on at least 65% of the snaps a league-high seven times during the regular season, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.
Only once were any of those receivers able to catch more than two passes. Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders had five catches for 73 yards on seven targets against Sneed in Week 12.
Sneed, 27, didn't allow a touchdown catch as the nearest defender in coverage all season until the Chiefs' divisional-round playoff win over the Buffalo Bills.
In the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, Sneed lined up against Zay Flowers 21 times. Sneed allowed one catch for 54 yards and made one of the biggest plays of the game by knocking the ball from Flowers just before he crossed the goal line. The Chiefs recovered the fumble in the end zone.
In 57 regular-season games, Sneed has 10 interceptions and 40 passes defended. He has one interception and seven passes defended in 13 postseason games.
Once the trade is executed, Sneed's departure to Tennessee will free up $19.8 million against the Chiefs' salary cap.

Today will be a beautiful end to the weekend. Highs will be in the upper 60s to about 70º this afternoon with a partly cloudy sky. Low fall to the upper 40s overnight with thickening clouds.
FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY:
Monday will be cloudy, mild, and windy. A Wind Advisory goes into effect Monday at 1:00 P.M. and will last until Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. Sustained winds will be around 20-25 MPH with some wind gusts approaching 40+ MPH. Be sure to secure loose objects ahead of time like outdoor patio furniture or trash cans. Strong wind gusts like this can cause large tree limbs to fall, which could result in power outages. Along with the gusty wind, the very dry air will persist, so there is still an elevated fire danger across the Mid State. The winds can cause a fire to get out of control very easily, so avoid burning anything until Wednesday.
The strong wind is coming in ahead of a line of showers and maybe even a few isolated thunderstorms late Monday night into Tuesday. While no severe weather is expected, we could see some heavy rain at times, lasting through Tuesday night. About 1″-2″ of rain is expected across the Mid State.

CALM REST OF THE WEEK:
Rain clears out by Wednesday morning but slightly cooler air will take over. We drop from the low 70s on Tuesday to the low 60s on Wednesday and Thursday, but with lots of sunshine. Lows will be colder, too, back in the 30s.
We warm back up by Friday with highs back in the 70s with lots of sunshine.
Next weekend looks beautiful, sunny, and very warm with highs in the upper 70s.

With the loss, the Red Wings (36-29-6; 78 points) now sit just one point ahead of the Washington Capitals, who beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 7-6, in a shootout on Friday, for the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot. The New York Islanders also gained ground in the standings with a 6-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday afternoon, pulling within three points of Detroit.
"To come into a building like this and give up one goal, you're certainly going to give yourself a chance," Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said. "Just really frustrating and disappointing that unfortunately, it came down to one play. We had it on our stick three different times within that flurry, and it was kind of self inflicted.
"A lot of positives obviously, but just a huge missed opportunity for a point."
Winning their fifth straight game, the Predators (42-25-4; 88 points) also extended their franchise-record point streak to 17 consecutive contests. Goalie Juuse Saros made 23 saves for his third shutout this season.
"I thought the guys were great tonight," said netminder Alex Lyon, who stopped 31 of 32 shots in his first start for Detroit since last Sunday. "Passion, emotion and blocking shots. Mo is always blocking shots, but the guys were awesome tonight. I thought we were communicating really well in the D-zone. I think that's important for us, and makes the game simpler and cleaner. They can really get buzzing in the offensive zone, so I thought we handled that really well."
Shots after the first period were 14-8 for Nashville, as Lyon and Saros both made some big saves to keep the game scoreless.
Moritz Seider dropped the gloves with the Predators' Filip Forsberg at 4:55 of the second period, which also came and went without any goals. It was Seider’s first career NHL fight.
"It was lifting," Lalonde said about Seider dropping the gloves. "Mo plays with such an edge and when you play with that type of edge, there's going to be moments like that. I thought he handled it extremely well. A really good sign going forward."
