Home Care Santa Fe, TN

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Santa Fe Plaza gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Santa Fe, TN is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“I’d like to take a moment to thank you and everyone at Always Best Care for the assistance and great care provided to my mother following her stroke. After a lengthy stay in a rehabilitation center, mom was very clear that she wanted to go home. The stroke had unfortunately robbed her of her independence, and to go home, we would need round-the-clock care. Always Best Care came into our family at that point and made it possible for mom to be at home for over 20 months. Maintaining continuity of care and finding the right match of caregivers is no east task. There are so many moving parts that go into making that happen day after day, and somehow your team made it look easy. Coordinating staffing around last-minute callouts, illness, incompatible personalities, holidays, family dynamics, etc. These and other challenges did arise, but the important thing is that you reliably found solutions. Through a challenging state in my mother’s life, and for our entire family, your caregiver and office staff provide the support and peace of mind we needed. We’ve been very fortunate along the way to have many wonderful caregivers, and I’ve personally enjoyed getting to know them, I want to emphasize that you have very special people on your team. Thank you for supporting our family and caring for my mother!”

“I was in need of someone to be with my husband for 8 hours while I had to be away from home. I was a little nervous since we had never used this type of service before. The two ladies who interviewed us and explained the procedure could not have been nicer and more professional. When the caregiver Rhonda arrived, she immediately put us at ease. She was very efficient in making sure she had my husband’s medicine doses correct and in asking questions pertinent to his Parkinson’s. When I returned home, they both seemed to have had a great time looking at my husband’s extensive photography collection and watching westerns on TV. We will most definitely use Always Best Care again!”

“A very kind review from a client's family member that was received today. We are grateful to have such wonderful families to work with and take care of in addition to great staff like Stacey Leverette. To Whom it May Concern, I would like to recommend Always Best Care Senior Services. My experience with them has been great! My father had advanced Parkinson's disease as well as some other physical problems. He finally got to the place he needed some assistance. I contacted Stacey and she came out and met with my dad and myself. She was very knowledgeable and thoroughly answered all the questions and concerns for us. More than anything else, she calmed all the concerns that my father had. In a very short time Stacey had someone on site. We've had days where we needed to change the day or time of service because of appointments, holidays or something else. When that occurs, I simply call Stacey and give her the information and she makes the adjustments in a seamless manner. If you work with her for a little bit, you will see quickly that she is very good at what she does. It has been a very good experience. I recommend Always Best Care. Yours Sincerely, Bill A.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Santa Fe, TN?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Dinner For Two Restaurant in Santa Fe or visit Oldest House Museum, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Santa Fe, TN, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your TN's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Santa Fe, TN understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Santa Fe, TN

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Santa Fe, TN

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Pacifica Senior Living Santa Fe
  • Brookdale Santa Fe
  • Sierra Vista at Vista Living Care
  • BeeHive Homes of Santa Fe NM
  • MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Santa Fe
  • Kingston Residence of Santa Fe

Playing their second game in as many nights Tuesday, Brad Slaughter could tell his Santa Fe Wildcats weren’t as energetic as normal.

They got a lift in the second half of their matchup with host Zion Christian, as Auden Slaughter scored 13 straight points coming out of the locker room to provide some much needed breathing room in an eventual 72-55 victory.

Slaughter’s post-intermission surge came on the heels of his 10 consecutive points to close the opening half, giving the visitors a 33-30 lead, as he finished the night with 46 points – his second 40-point game of the Wildcats’ 5-0 season.

“We had a tough game (a 67-48 win at Cascade Monday). We struggled with our energy. We needed him to have that spurt,” said Brad, Auden’s dad. “You can kinda tell when he gets rolling. Early in the third quarter he perked up. I think the team feeds off him.”

The host Eagles gave Santa Fe fits early, on both ends of the floor, as freshman Ayden Glenn was matching Slaughter offensively and frustrating him and his teammates when they had the ball.

“They did a good job executing. That may be the most points we’ve had scored on us,” Brad Slaughter said. “They did some things that flattened our defense out.”

Glenn injured his right ankle battling for a loose ball in the early moments of the third period, though, and his departure was more impactful than Zion coach Sam Martin would have hoped.

“Any time the best player on the floor goes down, negative thoughts creep into your mind,” Martin said. “We let it consume us. As a team, we’re more than Ayden Glenn. We have to realize that.”

Zion Christian (4-3) opened the fourth quarter with a Brady Woolf 3-pointer to cut what had been a 12-point deficit to five, but Slaughter answered with a pull-up jumper in the paint, Austin Hazlett added a basket and Slaughter scored again in transition to get the Wildcat lead back up to double digits. The margin stayed at or above eight points for the remainder of the contest.

“Auden’s an unbelievable player,” Martin said. “It would have been fun to see how it worked out at the end with Ayden in there.

“We have guys that can step up. They’ve just got to believe it.”

Slaughter, who scored a career-high 50 points in an 85-74 win over Lewis County last January, knew he was “in a zone” but had no idea what he’d done Tuesday.

“The game’s kind of a blur,” he said. “We started making a few shots, our defense picked up. We knew we were going to take over the game.

“I feel I can get to my spots, feel myself get in a zone.”

He expressed his disappointment in Glenn being unable to finish the game as well.

“At the beginning, he started doing well, he was getting his team going, I got my team going,” said Slaughter, who’s averaging 34.6 points per game. “It boosts the energy on both sides.”

Glenn finished with 21 points to lead the Eagles; Landon Yates added a double-double (13 points, 13 rebounds) in the loss. Macon Adkison scored 16 points for Santa Fe.

Lady ‘Cats show improvement: Chaslyn Stewart, who missed most of her sophomore season after a December knee injury, scored a game-high 15 points as Santa Fe defeated Zion Christian 50-15.

“For us to be successful, Chaslyn has to be good,” first-year Lady Wildcats coach John Wild said. “She has to figure out she can be really good. She’s got to go hard continually, all the time – in practice, in games. She can’t take plays off. She’s got a chance to be special, and that’ll help her get to the level she needs to get to and the level I know she can get to.”

Stewart scored 11 of her points in the second half, as Santa Fe (3-2) built on a 19-9 halftime lead. Nora Kate Butt added 11 points, nine before the break.

“I love how we work together. We aren’t selfish,” Stewart said. “We don’t worry about who has points. That’s part of playing together since sixth grade.”

Stewart doesn’t take Wild’s praise – or challenge – lightly.

“It means a lot,” she said. “It means he sees something in me and he’s willing to work with me for me to be something special. If he’s telling me that, there’s a reason. I need to listen to him.”

Zion Christian (2-4) managed just six field goals in the loss.

“I thought we played hard and played some good defense,” Zion coach Doug Kennedy said. “We didn’t make enough shots. But we made them work for it.”

However, it was the chance to be a first-time athletic administrator that grabbed Wild's attention.

"The last four to five years, I've really been intrigued with this athletics director position, like becoming an athletic director," said Wild, who was named to the role on Tuesday.

Wild said close relationships with current Williamson County Schools athletics director Darrin Joines and former Williamson County AD Jeremy Qualls led him to garnering interest after seeing them work in their roles.

"Just talking to them, I became intrigued about it and (Santa Fe) is going to let me be the athletic director. That's a big piece of it," Wild said. "I want to be able to mentor and organize. The basketball piece, the more I thought about it got me back to my roots. I went to a small high school I played at a small college.

"My first 10 years were at small school basketball. (Wife) Susan and my kids went to a small school. This isn't an oddity for me. I've been there before."

Wild has won more than 600 games as a head coach with various stops across Middle Tennessee, including Franklin for two years before going to Summit. He was also at Wilson Central, Franklin County and Lawrence County. And he had a stint as an assistant women's basketball coach at Lipscomb University.

Wild was inducted into the Tennessee Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2022 and is an officer in the association.

ALL-STATE GIRLS:TSWA All-State girls basketball team for 2022-23 season released

Why leave Summit

Wild led the Lady Spartans to the region tournament three of the four years. He came to Summit the same season as boys coach Jim Fey, who also resigned after the 2022-23 season.

Summit finished 12-16, losing to Ravenwood in the District 12-4A tournament. He takes over a program that went 8-18 and lost to Culleoka in the District 10-1A tournament.

“We want to thank Coach Wild for his leadership the past four years and appreciate the relationships he built while here,” Summit athletic director Chad Kirby said in a release.

Attracted to small setting at Santa Fe

Wild said the small school setting and ability to help coach Santa Fe's girls basketball players at a young age was a key component for him to leave.

"In a setting like Santa Fe, you have access to your middle school kids. You have access to your elementary kids on the same campus," he said.

That's different in Williamson County, where the schools are on different campuses and coaches aren't permitted to have that same interaction due to TSSAA rules.

"The thing that became very frustrating to me (in Williamson County) was you have kids in your middle schools in the eighth grade, but are they going to a private school," Wild said. "Or are they going to try and get an out of zone exemption to get in a certain academic program at another high school?

"I just think at the smaller schools, you get to cultivate a relationship with kids at a younger age and really, really develop them. It's kind of a neat way to do things."

As witnessed by the ball he received prior to Friday’s game commemorating his 2000th career point, Auden Slaughter is an offensive gamechanger.

During Santa Fe’s District 10-A opener against visiting Culleoka, the junior proved equally disruptive on the other end of the floor.

After the visitors’ Eli Hardison went off for 22 second-quarter points, Slaughter drew the second-half assignment of slowing him down.

Hardison’s next basket came with 2:13 remaining in the contest, as the Wildcats rallied from a six-point halftime deficit for a 64-50 victory.

“After he got hot, I know I can defend a guy like that,” said Slaughter, who scored a game-high 35 points. “I knew I had to slow him down.

“We agree that defense is the most important thing. The reason we won by 14 is our defense.”

Defense wasn’t a problem for Santa Fe (14-1, 1-0) in a 22-9 start, but Hardison absolutely took over the contest in the second period, scoring all but three of Culleoka’s points as the Warriors went up 34-28 at the break.

“When you’ve got teammates that trust you, they continued to get me the ball, and the coaches trust me to take those shots,” said Hardison, who hit six of his eight 3-pointers in the quarter. “Shooters shoot. I found my groove.”

Slaughter found his own groove in the second half, scoring 21 points – including six in an 11-0 fourth-quarter spurt – and focusing on Hardison to help the Wildcats regain control of the contest.

“They picked the (defensive) intensity up, put Auden on Eli,” Culleoka coach Mike Lovett said. “And we had some ‘bunnies’ we missed. Offensive rebounds hurt us in the second half. We give up four offensive rebounds and Auden gets a 3 – that’s never a good defensive (possession).

“They’ve got that experience of finishing out games that we’ve been working on. All I was asking was that we show up and compete. I think we showed we can compete with anybody in the district.”

Santa Fe coach Brad Slaughter wasn’t surprised by the manner in which the game developed – though Hardison’s emergence as the offensive catalyst for Culleoka (7-9, 0-1) did take him aback.

“That’s as hot as I’ve ever had a kid get against me,” he said. “Auden did a good job of turning that around in the second half.

“When teams know each other as well as we and Culleoka do, we didn’t expect anything but a tough game. Starting 1-0 (in district play) was all we wanted to do.”

As pivotal as the younger Slaughter’s 35 points – or his defensive presence – were, his eight assists also played a part in Santa Fe continuing its early-season success. Andrew Graves finished with 13 points and Macon Adkison 11, both benefiting from Slaughter feeds.

“I was able to get my teammates involved,” said Slaughter, who visited with Alabama-Birmingham assistant coach Philip Pearson following the contest. “I’m proud of how we did.”

Karlie Jones knocked down a 3-pointer to open the second quarter, giving Culleoka a three-point lead, and the visitors pulled away to a 52-29 victory over Santa Fe in the girls’ matchup.

Jones finished with a game-high 17 points, including five 3s, as the ‘Lady Devils’ improved to 6-9 (1-0).

“Defensively, we were connected, and Karlie hit some big 3s at the right time – timely 3s,” Culleoka coach Catherine Upshaw said. “It wasn’t just Maci (McKennon). It was everybody.

“We talk about how good they can be. We have all the confidence in the world in them. They’ve got to have it in themselves.”

McKennon, who reached the 1,000-point milestone earlier this season, scored 15 points and Kendall Reischman 10 in the win.

“We felt pretty good going in,” McKennon said. “We watched a lot of film, we knew who did what.”

Kendall Massey scored nine of Santa Fe’s 10 first-quarter points, on three 3s, but went scoreless the rest of the night. Chaslyn Stewart scored a team-high 11 points for the Lady Wildcats (6-9, 0-1), who managed just six points in the second and third periods combined.

“When you’re not making shots, you’ve got to do other things,” Santa Fe coach John Wild said. “I think we need to get a lot tougher – box out tougher, go to the offensive glass, grab balls with two hands, get on the floor (for loose balls). All that is ‘toughness’, and we’ve got to get it and get it quickly.

“They played hard, they competed harder, they were tougher. They did all the intangible things to win the game.”

2,000 points and counting for Santa Fe’s Slaughter following fourth 40-point night

Averaging 34.3 points per game, with more 40-point performances than 20-point outings through his team’s 10-0 start, there was a good chance something special was going to happen before Auden Slaughter stepped off the floor Tuesday night at McEwen.

After converting a three-point play to open the fourth quarter, Slaughter’s steal and layup gave him the 2,000th point of his career, and the junior finished with 43 points on the night as Santa Fe picked up a 62-51 road win to complete a regular-season sweep of the Warriors.

The Wildcats junior had scored 1,964 points – already the most in program history – over 82 games, including 13 contests as an eighth-grader.

“I knew I was somewhere close,” Slaughter said regarding the milestone. “I didn’t do the math, but I knew I was getting there.”

Santa Fe coach Brad Slaughter, Auden’s father, considered informing his son of just how close he was to the mark prior to Tuesday’s matchup.

“I started to tell him. I’d have felt better about him getting if if he’d known,” said Brad, who began to second-guess his decision to not tell Auden as the guard struggled through a five-point, 2-for-11 shooting effort in the opening quarter.

“McEwen’s a really good team, but he’s historically done well against them. He had 35 or more against them twice last year.”

Additionally, Auden scored 38 points in the Wildcats’ 66-47 homecourt win against McEwen two weeks ago.

So it wasn’t a surprise that after his “rough” – by his assessment – start, he managed to score 18 second-quarter points and help his team to a 32-18 halftime lead.

“I wasn’t making anything. I was getting fouled a little,” he said. “But I started taking it to the hole, I focused on driving more, and I got rolling on defense. I got to the basket, got easy shots and went from there.”

Though he was oblivious, the Santa Fe cheering section was not – and with 23 points at halftime, the feeling was not if, but when, Slaughter would reach the milestone.

“The way the game was called kinda got him out of his rhythm,” Brad Slaughter said. “We got refocused at halftime – stopped anticipating the whistle, finished through contact.”

The younger Slaughter went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 2:30 of the third period, helping Santa Fe maintain a double-digit lead and giving him 31 points with eight minutes to play.

With the basket that put him at 2,000, Santa Fe went up 51-33 at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats went on to lead by as many as 21 before Slaughter went 5-for-6 from the line late to close out the win.

“I’m just glad he got it done,” Brad Slaughter said.

It was the fourth time Slaughter scored 40 or more points this season, following a 41-point effort at Fairview, 46 at Zion Christian and 41 last week against Perry County.

The mark was secondary to the win for Auden Slaughter.

“It’s been a hard first half of the season, but it’s amazing we’re 11-0,” he said. “We’ve improved from last season.

“I just hope to keep pushing and keep winning.”

As storms drenched Middle Tennessee, causing devastating floods Aug. 21 in Humphreys, Hickman and Houston counties, the halls and classrooms of Maury County’s own Santa Fe Unit School also began to fill with rising waters.

The heavy rains filled the school’s lower levels, pouring in through a pair of large doors that welcome students on weekday mornings and send them home on school buses every afternoon.

From the governor:‘Tragedy and hope’: Bill Lee on Waverly flooding

“The rain came faster than our system could carry it away,” assistant principal Jerry L. Potts told The Daily Herald.

“Every room on the lower end of our school, including the cafeteria, had water standing from the flood.”

The school serves about 600 students in kindergarten through 12th-grade.

Getting to work: 'A phone call away in any situation'

As the heavy rains fell upon the small, unincorporated community located on the rural northeastern edge of Maury County, school staff mobilized to mitigate the damage. That night, the school district's maintenance department, led by Murry Ring, got to work.

“Several members of the department showed up and five to six hours later, they had removed the water and mopped every inch of floor and set up numerous fans to help the rooms dry out, Potts said.

Recovery:'Inundated with supplies': Recovery effort continues in Hickman County following flood

About a dozen people cleared water out of Santa Fe Unit School classrooms and moved supplies and resources out of flooded areas at the school. Ring said the team removed about two inches of water from the cafeteria.

“I have a very willing team of men that is a phone call away in any situation,” Ring said.

Eric Perryman, MCPS assistant superintendent of facilities, and Dave Hall, director of facilities, also assisted the group.

“We can’t thank them enough for showing up late at night and getting it done,” Potts said.

Teachers, community members 'stepped up'

Teachers, staff and community members arrived to assist with the cleanups at Santa Fe Unit School on Aug. 22, ensuring that classes would continue the following day. Several faculty members worked until it was time to go to church. After church services, they returned to the school.

“Almost every teacher in that end of the building came out and finished cleaning and moving furniture back in,” Potts said. “Even faculty members who work in the unaffected sections of the school showed up.

"The community stepped up as well. They helped in the classrooms, cleaned the areas in front of the building and brought water for everyone."

“As a result of the hard work of a great many people, Santa Fe School opened on time Monday morning and didn’t miss a beat,” Potts said. “Unless you knew what had happened, you would not have been able to tell.”
