Bundled in jackets and mufflers, tea time guests at The Yorkshire Deli are carefully tucked under lovely handmade blankets, surrounded by bonfires. A few straggly leaves still remain on the branches overhead, a reminder of the fall past and the spring to come. Everyone is amiably enjoying the tea in their imported porcelain cups served with scones and fresh clotted cream. There are smiles and waves of laughter that ebb and flow with the conversation.

This is the scene at The Yorkshire Deli on a chilly winter afternoon. It is one of the few places in Middle Tennessee to have a true British High Tea. The Yorkshire Deli is located at 1114 Highway 70 in Kingston Springs. Tea times take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The cost is $35 per person with a two person minimum and a six-person maximum. The Yorkshire Deli is the brain-child of Cornwall natives Leslie Mortimer-Wallace and Genevieve Neace. They have brought the real taste of England to Kingston Springs, Tennessee in Cheatham County.

“As a native Yorkshire man living in Tennessee,” said one reviewer, “the taste of home here is too frequently few and far between. But if you are willing to stop off at the quaint Yorkshire Deli for an English tea and lunch, I can’t think of a place that hits home in quite the same way…It was authentically British.”

Located on a farm known as The Land, everything they make is from scratch using fresh ingredients, including many authentic meats and cheeses imported from the British Isles.

Tea is offered with plain or raisin scones. They are served the traditional English way with butter, jam, and clotted cream.

“When we opened I couldn’t convince any of our customers to choose this scone over other choices in the [bakery] case,” said Mortimer-Wallace on Facebook. “Now, it’s one of our most popular items. I’m so happy this beautiful community has embraced our tea room and I’m so proud to have brought a little piece of Britain to this small town in Tennessee.”

They also offer a rotating menu of luncheon items that change with the seasons. It always contains an assortment of authentically British dishes, including Ploughman’s cheese, pasties, butty, crumpets, meat pies, stews, and Jammy Dodgers.

One favorite is the Cornish Pastie. It looks something like a Southern fried pie, but it is bigger and savory instead of sweet, containing steak, potatoes, carrots, and gravy wrapped in their handmade pastry dough.

In the winter they serve a hearty Beef and Ale Stew. It is served with a buttered roll, but it is worth it to get a tub of their Ploughman’s cheese spread to add to the roll. It is heaven for the taste buds.

“Everything was top notch,” said another reviewer. “as good as I’ve had in England, plus a delicious hot chocolate.”

With all of the seating outside, Yorkshire Deli is both kid and dog-friendly. They are willing to adjust some of their offerings for kiddo’s taste buds, like their banana and Nutella sandwich. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are also available.

Lots of items to go are offered, including Whole Banoffee Pies, made from gram crackers, bananas and caramel topped with fresh whipped cream; Chocolate Fudge Raspberry Cake; Sausage Rolls; Scotch Eggs; and an assortment of breads baked by Chef Emilie.

“You can taste the love that goes into the food, drinks and desserts,” said a customer.

After her hometown of Kingston Springs, Tennessee, lost its newspaper, Cate Burgan decided to start a newspaper by herself to ensure her community could still receive reliable news.

Newspapers—digital or print editions—are often called the heart of a community. The stories published tell the joys and sorrows of a city's residents, provide reliable information during times of crisis and strengthen social ties by keeping communities connected. But in the past several years, thousands of local newspapers across the country have been forced out of business, leading to many communities becoming news deserts.

Cate Burgan, a journalism and strategic communications graduate student at George Washington University, saw it happen in her hometown. So, she decided to start an online newspaper by herself to ensure her community could still receive reliable news.

Burgan was raised in Kingston Springs, a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up, she looked forward to seeing their hometown paper, the South Cheatham Advocate, on their doorstep every Saturday morning. The paper was run by a local family from 1990 to 2020, before going out of business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The impact of losing its main news source was quickly felt in the small town, Burgan said. The most immediate consequence was how quickly false information spread around the community via social media.

“People on Facebook were just posting anything,” Burgan said. “There was false information flying around about COVID. We live in the Tornado Valley, and we had a devastating one in 2022 in Kingston Springs. And so there was just a lot of false information, and we just didn't have access to reliable information.”

While pursuing her journalism degree at GW, Burgan took a class on cultural reporting under assistant professor Jesse J. Holland,who is also associate director of SMPA. During the course, Burgan was chosen to participate in a project titled, “FourStoried," a collaboration between the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University and GW that aimed to uncover what stories were going untold in underrepresented communities.

“The main thing I wanted students to get out of our joint work with West Virginia was there are neighborhoods and towns in this country that are often ignored by the mainstream media, but they are still important and deserve the coverage that the citizens need to be participating members of our democracy,” Holland said.

That project inspired Burgan to reflect on what stories were going untold in her hometown with the loss of their local newspaper. When it was time to pick what she wanted to do for her capstone project, Burgan chose to launch an online newspaper called “Kingston Springs Gazette.”

“At SMPA, they’re very supportive of what you want to do,” Burgan said. “They’ll help you. So, it kind of felt like my opportunity to do something that I've always wanted to do.”

Burgan started the Gazette from the bottom up by herself, designing the website, handling the social media and writing most of the stories. She began working on the project in January and launched the website in early June.

Burgan covers everything from feature stories to sports on her website. One of the more popular features on the Gazette is the video series, “The Faces of Kingston Spring,” where she conducts video interviews with prominent community figures to showcase the rich history and personalities within the town.

“So that work we did with FourStoried, Cate is mirroring some of that work in Kingston Springs,” Holland said. “And it is very heartening as a professor to see your students put into practical effect some of the things you've been talking about in the classroom.”

He said what is especially exciting about Burgan’s project is that she's not just using the traditional playbook of news media but is instead incorporating social media, blogs and crowdsourcing, while still upholding the same values of traditional journalism.

“It’s encouraging to see that journalism is always going to exist in some shape, form or fashion,” Holland said. “It may not exist in the way we’re used to but what Cate is doing is proving that journalism can evolve and move into modern times. It can adapt to what people need and not just what people are used to seeing.”

Holland said because there has been so much turnover in the news industry, it is inspiring to see young journalists pave the way to ensure people still have sources for reliable information.

“I am impressed at how much work Cate put into it because she is basically writing an entire newspaper by herself with only the help of a few stringers, family and friends,” Holland said. “That is a big project for anyone, but she is managing it quite admirably. And I get the feeling that the people in her hometown also appreciate the work she's putting into it.”

Burgan hopes to move back to Kingston Springs after graduation and keep running the Gazette. Currently, she publishes bi-weekly but after graduation, she wants to turn the Gazette into a weekly or a daily publication. Her mission is to be a trusted, accessible source of information for her hometown, ensuring her community members’ voices are heard through meaningful stories.

“I think it's so important for a community to have a newspaper, and I wish every community in the world could have reliable information,” Burgan said. “It is just so critical to be represented and to see yourself represented in local news. That’s why I'm so passionate about representing my community, getting the facts right and presenting it to them in a way that's accessible and they can easily digest.”

The Kingston Springs Board of Commissioners heard an update concerning codes inspector-based adjustments during its Thursday, Feb. 15 regular meeting.

Under New Business, Ordinance 24-002 was presented for the city to adopt the 2022 International Building Codes. City Manager John Lawless pointed out that these standards needed to be updated every seven years, but were chiefly being done now in order to be aligned with the Town of Pegram as the two towns have agreed to jointly share and fund a codes inspector.

Lawless added that Pegram also plans to adopt the new codes, which he said will be open for the public to review both online and in the public library.

After the changes were unanimously approved, Commissioner Todd Verhoven said this move “was huge,” and for those involved in building efforts here, they “all said the new codes are great.”

Verhoven added, “It’s better for the town as a whole.”

A needed adjustment to the interlocal agreement for the shared inspector was presented, as City Attorney Timothy Potter pointed out that a correction had to be made concerning worker’s compensation coverage. Potter presented an amendment bearing the adjustment that needed acceptance, which was given unanimously.

Under Old Business, a budget amendment that covered grant fund adjustments as well as allotments for the coming shared inspector, had to have its second reading moved to the March meeting. Lawless explained that the town of publicized the amendment electronically but not through a newspaper, as the law requires.

Financial Director Kellie Reed made her report, pointing out the sewer budget and its operating agreements. She said for Operating & Maintenance, the fund bore a projected revenue/expenditure of $127,000 for the year “as long as everything keeps going like it is currently.”

The board also approved transfers concerning salary line-items, for which $50,000 was moved, and for health insurance $122,000 was transferred to two differing line items for the sake of “engineering work.”

On behalf of the Planning Commission, Lawless gave an update on the developing stormwater plant. He reviewed its coming work, and efforts to be undertaken, saying that it will “alleviate a considerable amount of storm water in the neighborhood… across Kingston Springs Road, due to heavy rain.”

Lawless said for the maintenance facility’s planned construction, the revisions concerning the city zoning ordinance would be done and brought forward in the next commissioner meeting.

As for the Pearson Project on Kingston Springs Road, Lawless explained that the developer has not fully complied with zoning requirements, and the planning commission had voted to deny the renewal of that project.

In commissioners’ announcements, Carolyn Clark acknowledged nurse Angel Carter, who had given a presentation on Project ADAM (Automatic Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory). Carter helped with having an AED placed in Kingston Springs’ city park and also provided AED training classes to the community. Clark said that Carter is one of four nominees to WKRN’s “Remarkable Women of 2024.”

Clark said, “We were really lucky to have her here… and perform her AED class for us.”

Vice Mayor Glenn Remick noed that the “Harpeth Conservancy was coming to Burns Park on Feb. 25, with 30 students from Christ Presbyterian Academy to engage in invasive species removal efforts and a trash pickup.”

During community input, resident Tom Steger read a poem about the lack of snow clearing on his residential road. He expressed his disappointment, reading that the city had “flunked the test,” in his case.

Facility will allow Tyler to triple current warehouse space and increase production

NASHVILLE, Tenn., — Tyler Technologies, Inc. announced today it has broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in Kingston Springs, Tennessee, to support its Resident Resources solution, a cloud-based technology solution suite designed specifically for correctional facilities.

The new facility will support the manufacturing, assembly, and production of Tyler’s unique Resident Resources (formerly VendEngine) hardware, which includes correctional-grade kiosks, tablets, charging solutions, handheld mobile devices, and mobile carts — allowing Tyler to bring in modern equipment and tooling to improve both quality and lead time. Tyler’s Resident Resources solution is a holistic hardware, software, and app-based package uniquely designed to be used by correctional facilities for financial and communications management while providing incarcerated individuals with specialized tools for electronic messaging with family members, online deposit systems, video visitation, trust account management systems, and more.

With the new space, Tyler will be able to more than double current production capacity, triple warehouse space, and expand the company’s service and support capabilities. Tyler’s specialized hardware kiosks and other products are seeing continued demand across the U.S., the European Union, and Caribbean.

Locally, the Nashville-Davidson County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) uses multiple aspects of the software solution including Tyler’s Community Readiness solution, which is part of the larger Resident Resources offering. Using this solution, incarcerated individuals can take education courses, gain information about how to manage finances, apply and interview for a job, and have resources waiting for them upon their release from jail. Not only does it serve as a crucial resource for the incarcerated individuals, but the software also benefits DCSO staff by reducing physical paperwork, allowing them to focus on what is most important to the safety and effectiveness of the facility.
