GREER, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Woodward Inc. announced that it has selected Spartanburg County to establish a new manufacturing operation in South Carolina.
Officials said the 300,000-square-foot building will be located within Smith Farms Industrial Park in Greer.
The company, who said it is a global leader in energy control solutions for aerospace and industrial markets, will create 275 new jobs with the nearly $200 million investment.
“Growth is good,” said nearby resident Ben Moore. “I love the new jobs. I’m always pro-jobs.”
“In terms of jobs, I think growth is great. It helps move the economy [forward],” added neighbor Rowen Domingo.
Moore and Domingo live adjacent to the industrial park—a 475-acre property that provides development and construction services for companies seeking new locations.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for the people of Spartanburg,” said County Council Vice Chair Jack Mabry. “I think we’re all invested in bringing more jobs—high-paying jobs that our people can feel.”
The new site will produce parts that help power an airplane’s steering, using special fluids and machines to move components that control the aircraft’s direction.
“We’ve got good-quality people that can fill these positions, and I think it’s hard to pass us up because we are one of the leaders in the state with economic development,” Mabry said. “I believe it just says a lot about our people.”
The area is close to several new housing developments. While neighbors expressed excitement, they also shared some concerns.
“The cons are losing land forever—losing farmland. We don’t get the land back,” said Moore.
Domingo added that a large facility also raises questions about potential noise and pollution.
“But if it’s there and creating new jobs, overall I think it’s a good thing,” Domingo said.
“It’s worth the cost,” added Moore.
