One of the most important things I have to consider when planning an excursion with my kids is how long we can realistically expect to be out. I’m thinking about naptimes, snack times, potty breaks, and all the rest that we parents have to consider!
Sometimes I look at the clock and know we need to get out for maybe 30 minutes to an hour… Sure, there’s always the backyard or the neighborhood, who doesn’t love a change of scenery? That’s when we decided to visit Linville Hills Park, located just outside the city limits of Spartanburg in the unincorporated area of Moore.
Learning Trail for Littles
The whole park is somewhere in the range of 8-10 acres, and we love the roughly half-mile paved loop that runs around its perimeter. The park is fully fenced with chain-link on two sides, a wooden privacy fence near the playground, and a split-rail fence along the front with a gap just for the driveway in and out. The path follows the inside of the fence all the way around, with a crosswalk to take you over the driveway.
Without stopping to play, we can walk the loop in about 10-15 minutes. But trust me, your little ones are going to want to stop and play! Something that makes this trail fun for little ones is the play-and-learn signage along the way—there are sections of the path that are painted with pictures sure to get your kids’ attention, and if you read the signs, you’ll find a range of suggestions for stopping and playing with your child at each spot.
My favorite play-and-learn spot was the first one we found, where you’re encouraged to stand on the painted circles and take turns making each other laugh and smile! My children’s favorite was definitely the hopscotch section, though. They could have stayed there forever!
The trail is fully paved, about wide enough for 3 people shoulder to shoulder, and just a little bit hilly. I’m able to push a double-stroller on it pretty easily, and I think it would be exactly the right challenge level for kids who are working on bike riding!
Playground, Disc Golf Course, and More!
Of course, my kids always beeline straight for any playground. At Linville Hills Park, there is a simple swing set with 2 standard swings and 2 baby swings. The playset equipment is designed for ages 5 to 12 years old, and it has 2 tall slides.
The standout feature is definitely the unique bridge to get from one side of the playset to the other, with narrow passages shaped like giant needle eyes that are spaced just far enough apart to make a kid nervous! My 5-year-old immediately started playing “ninja” as he navigated this for the first time.
There is a separate exercise station, too, with equipment for at least 6 different guided exercises. It is on the opposite side of the park from the playground, but its colors and design might entice children to try to play on it. Be sure to follow posted guidelines for the appropriate use of this equipment!
Linville Hills Park also offers a disc golf course scattered across the whole property, and we counted 9 baskets as we walked the loop. This is an “aceplace” course, which means it is designed to be beginner-friendly and fun for all ages and skill levels. Use of the course is first-come, first-served, and you’ll need to remember to bring your own frisbee disc!
And one of the best parts? A wide open, hilly green space smack in the middle of it all! I tell you what, all I could think was how perfect a place it would be to go sledding the next time we get a good snow!
Park Facilities
There is free parking onsite, men’s and women’s restrooms, water fountains, and two covered picnic shelters complete with grills and trash cans. All of these are open from dawn to dusk, following the general hours of the park, and the picnic shelters are open to reservations. This park is maintained by the Spartanburg County Parks Department.
