They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Harbor Island gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. To make sure our senior clients receive the best care possible, we pair them with compassionate caregivers who understand their unique needs. That way, they may provide care accordingly without compromising their wellbeing.

The Always Best Care difference lies in life's little moments - where compassionate care and trustworthy experience come together to help seniors live a fruitful, healthy life. “I had a great experience with Steve! He was incredibly clear and thorough in explaining the entire process.”

“Steve and Claudia at Always Best Care Senior Services were just awesome in how they provided at home care for my mother Carmen. Starting with the initial consultation by Steve to learn about mom's personal care needs to the follow-up visit of a registered nurse to the eventual placement of a compassionate caregiver; every step of their service was well thought out and they truly delivered on providing a level of care for mom that exceeded our families (and mom's) expectations. It can be very nerve racking to find and leave your loved one with a caregiver but this company gets that and they were just fantastic. Thank you Always Best Care!”

Mark B.

Michelle B.

“I have been utilizing Always Best Care Senior Services for 2 years to care 24/7 for my elderly parents. I am very pleased with their services. The Owners and Office Staff bend over backwards to make sure that there is always coverage, to alert my parents Caregiver Team of any requests that I make, to advise me when there is an issue with my parents or their dog. The Caregiver Team working with my parents are all compassionate and caring, knowledgeable and skilled. Sadly, my Father passed away in the fall of 2020. Each of their Caregivers, the Owners and the Office Staff expressed to me that they would like to attend his memorial service when we are able to have it. During the weeks he was slipping away, the Caregiver team not only took care of my parents, they looked after me, gently reminding me to eat, rest or take a break. They truly care not only for my parents, but for all our family. I can’t begin to express what a comfort it has been to have them caring for my parents, especially during the pandemic when visits are prohibited. They are my eyes and ears. Working intimately with my parents, the Caregivers are very tuned in to even subtle changes. If you are in the market and looking for a senior services/home health care company, I strongly urge you to reach out to Always Best Care Senior Services. You’ll be happy you did.”

Heidi R.

“If you want quality care for yourself or your loved ones, Steve and his time are the best, don’t waste your time looking elsewhere. As an estate planning attorney, I have recommended clients to Steve who have been very happy with his team. Steve and his team went above and beyond for one specific client of mine that had a very complex situation, and I am eternally grateful to them. I only hope I can continue to work together with him - Steve and his team are dedicated to making sure you are comfortable, happy and safe. My favorite part about Always Best Care is that all of their staff are TRAINED EMPLOYEES WITH CONTINUING EDUCATION - NOT INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS!”

Aldo C.

“Always best care is a top notch senior services company. They go above and beyond with their clients and treat them as if they are family. If you are looking for a great family oriented team to help take care of your love one look no further. Give Always best care a call you will not be disappointed!!”

Forrest H.

“Highly recommended! All the staff is very professional and courteous”

Ryan N.

“Steve and his team were amazing. As my father’s Parkinson’s progress, we were in need of home health care desperately. Steve and his nurse came to our home, assess the situation, and set up a schedule to accommodate our needs. I would highly recommend them to any family or friends in need of their services.”

Claudine P.

“Steven and his team are superior in caring for aging friends and family. The most important thing is having people who you can trust with your family.”

Allison T.

“Steve and his team will take superior care of your loved ones.”

John D.

“Steve Snell and Staff of Always Best Care Senior Services have been amazingly responsive, helpful and worked diligently to make sure my clients needs were met! Can't praise them enough. The case was staffed immediately and overseen at all levels. Thank you for Always providing the Best Care!”

Karen G.

“I have worked with, and explored working with, various agencies and registries in the Palm Beach County area. I am picky. Always Best Care is qualitatively a notch above every other organization I've encountered. Responsive. Amiable. Professional. The aide, Islande, who has worked with my mom is top-notch for our needs. And . . . I have no doubt Steve (the agency's owner) and his staff would strive to find someone else, if it hadn't been a fit. If you are looking for Nursing Care, I strongly recommend giving Always Best Care a chance. BTW: It is important to understand that working with an Nursing Agency (like Always Best Care), means the staff are employees, not independent contractors (as they are when working through a Nursing Registry). An Agency is vested in having good employees, and a good agency wants you to be happy. But even all Agencies are not created equal. I worked with one (Alternative Health Care) where aides did not always show up! That was painful and incredibly stressful, and the manager and other higher-up staff didn't give a hoot.”

Liz S.

“I wish there were more that five stars. I can not say enough about the experience we have had in working with Always Best Care Senior Services. Not only were they extremely receptive to our needs, available immediately to every call, text or email, compassionate and kind...every single employee was better than the next. My Dad's recent death and my mothers recent surgery (with complications) requiring extra care was a traumatic time for our family. The care she received was beyond skilled and professional. We knew she was in trusting, caring hands. She was happy. I have recommended ABC to others and they have had the same experience. Do not hesitate to reach out to them if you are in need. I highly recommend them. I know I will be reaching out to Steven and Claudia the next time I am in need. My family and I are extremely grateful.”

Donna H.

“Fabulous experience with Always Best Care. Treated my 90 year old Father in Law with dignity and respect. We actually had fun with his aides and they were helpful and kind.”

Alicia B.

“I am very glad to have chosen ABC Senior Services to get us through a very difficult time when my parents finally reached the end of their independent lifestyles at age 96 and 97. Scheduling was difficult and sometimes changes were made last minute, but ABC came through as well as could be expected. Despite losing his wife of 37 years, my father is currently doing very well back north in an assisted living facility. Thank you ABC for the compassion you expressed throughout the 4 months you were there for us.”

Rob C.

“Always Best Care is a great company who goes above and beyond for their clients. My mother fell at my brothers home in Connecticut and I called Steve Snell for some guidance. Even though Steve is in Florida he was able to get my family connected with a representative in Connecticut immediately. Thank you Steve!”

Mike B.

“I highly recommend Always Best Care Senior Services if you have a loved one that needs personal care.”

Melanie T.

“Dori, is such a wonderful person and makes such an impact on everyone she is involved with.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Hobe Sound, FL?

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local The Grove or visit Hobe Sound Nature Center, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Hobe Sound, FL, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your FL's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Hobe Sound, FL understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Hobe Sound, FL

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Hobe Sound, FL

This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

HOBE SOUND, Fla. (CBS12) — A family in Hobe Sound is hoping for a Christmas miracle after losing everything in a house fire.

The Chavez family's precious belongings are gone. Members of the community are stepping up to help, CBS12's Luli Ortiz reports. (WPEC)

Their brave 14-year-old daughter made sure everyone inside got out. Members of the community are now stepping up to help.

PREVIOUS STORY: One person injured in Hobe Sound house fire

On Friday, the Chavez family showed CBS12 News their damaged property. All their precious belongings and memories are gone.

Father of three Raphael Chavez is wondering how he, his wife, and kids (aged 7, 12, and 14) will get back on their feet.

“I’ve been working so hard to have my family live in a better place,” Raphael Chavez told CBS12 News.

Photos from Martin County Fire Rescue show heavy smoke coming from their home on S.E. Ridgeway Terrace Tuesday night.

It was around dinner time. 14-year-old Gemma and her mom, Hermelinda, were home, while dad and the boys were out running errands.

“We were in the living room, getting ready for Christmas, when one our neighbors banged on our window and told us, ‘get outside, get outside, there’s a fire in our backyard’,” Gemma Chavez said.

As the fire was spreading and getting stronger, this brave teenager went inside to grab her mother and two little puppies.

“I saw no one was making any movements. So, I said, act quick and something fast, you’re in danger, you have to save your family,” Gemma said. “So, I did. I grabbed my mom. I did what I could for her to keep her alive, because she’s someone I love a lot. She is my support. I had to get my pets. They’re the love of my life.”

They eventually got out, but her mom, who has a serious heart condition, began having a seizure minutes later.

“Then, I remember my mom’s pills because she has a heart condition. I went inside to get her pills and her purse,” Gemma said.

Fire rescue eventually arrived and rushed her to a hospital.

That’s when Raphael heard the tragic news from a friend.

“I said, ‘What happened to my wife and my daughter?’ He said, ‘I think everybody’s okay, but your house is gone’,” Raphael Chavez said.

Members of the community describe Raphael as a hard-working father, doing what he can to support his children and sick wife.

A friend created a GoFundMe page for them.

The clothes they own now were donated. In the meantime, they’re staying with a relative.

“I got a beautiful family. I don’t want to lose my family,” Raphael Chavez said in fear of what’s next.

A new home will be the Christmas miracle they need, and what many say, they deserve.

According to the family, the fire started by the shed in the backyard and was likely caused by an electrical problem, but it’s still under investigation.

Gemma and her 12-year-old brother are students a Murray Middle School. Their 7-year-old brother attends Seawind Elementary School. Both are public schools in Martin County.

Lilly Pulitzer, the iconic Palm Beach-born fashion brand, has opened its newest store, in Hobe Sound.

The store, at 11764 S.E. Dixie Highway, Unit 4, next to Posh Pineapple by Juno, had its grand opening Saturday.

"The Hobe Sound store was approached thoughtfully to create a relaxing environment where our customers can gather and connect as a community, in addition to shopping," said Michelle Kelly, chief executive of Lilly Pulitzer.

The store includes a selection of Lilly Pulitzer's colorful clothing and accessories, with a range of signature prints and resort-inspired designs. Services include in-store pickup, phone-in orders, appointments for shopping and reserved fitting rooms.

The new location also features a fitting room with a Hobe Sound-themed mural that was hand-painted by the Lilly Pulitzer Print Studio, Kelly said. The mural, in shades of blue and pink, features the iconic banyan trees that line Bridge Road.

Another fitting room was "hand-painted and hand-shelled," she said, with an ornate shell-framed mirror — "a very special, truly Lilly touch," Kelly noted.

Outside of the store, there is a landscaped seating nook, she said.

The brand loves Hobe Sound, Kelly said, calling it "the epitome of laidback luxury and one of Florida's best kept secrets."

"We also have a few long-time company insiders who live and spend time in Hobe Sound, and they really brought forward the special nature and beauty of their town," she said.

As the company has looked to expand its footprint, it saw the opportunity to expand north into Martin County, Kelly said.

Lilly Pulitzer was created in the early 1960s in Palm Beach by its eponymous founder, who designed and wore colorful prints to cover fruit juice stains on her clothes as she worked at the juice stand she opened in 1959.

Her dresses and prints were so popular with residents and visitors on the island that she launched the brand, which became synonymous with bright, tropical patterns and since has become a staple in resort wear.

While the brand launched with dresses, it has expanded to include accessories and home goods, including bags, scarves, swimwear, candles, office supplies and planners.

There are four standalone Lilly Pulitzer stores in Palm Beach County: at 240 Worth Ave. in Palm Beach; 3101 PGA Blvd., Space F11 in The Gardens Mall; 601 E. Atlantic Ave., Suite 103, in Delray Beach; and 6000 Glades Road in the Town Center at Boca Raton mall. In addition, there are several Lilly Pulitzer-authorized retailers, including C.Orrico at 336 S. County Road in Palm Beach.

The Hobe Sound store joins Matilda's, a Lilly Pulitzer signature store in Stuart at 15 S.W. Flagler Ave.

Ken Bakst, developer of Friar’s Head on Long Island, New York, has submitted a masterplan for a new development in Martin County, Florida, which includes a 36-hole golf facility designed by Whitman, Axland & Cutten (WAC Golf).

The plan includes two eighteen-hole golf courses and a 175-acre practice facility comprising a 10-hole full-length practice layout, a 12-hole short course, a massive undulating putting green, an extensive short-game area, and a 360-degree long-game practice area.

Bakst is the visionary behind The Ranch. He wants to leave the land mostly untouched, while also creating a golf experience like no other.

“For the last decade Kenny had been searching for the perfect land for the next golf experience, and in summer 2021 he found it!” says Keith Cutten. “A nearly 4,000-acre rustic ranch 20 minutes from the beaches of Hobe Sound, and a short drive from Palm Beach Island. The Bakst family instantly fell in love with the rugged and picturesque site.”

Historically named the Calusa Creek Ranch, the site is “incredibly diverse with grassy pastures, wetlands, oak hammocks, pines flats and cypress domes,” says Cutten. “It is still an active ranch, currently home to approximately 800 Brangus cattle, and Kenny intends to continue to operate a significant cow calf operation on the property. It’s also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with 1.5 miles of frontage on the St. Lucie Canal.

“Most mornings The Ranch is blanketed in a breathtaking fog and as the blanket of mist lifts it unveils an abundance of wildlife that calls the land home. Deer, turkey, osprey, fox and many others will have plenty of room to thrive as The Ranch transitions, and that’s because more than 90 per cent of the land will be preserved as open space, while more than 65 per cent will remain bona fide agriculture for cattle and farming.”

The excavation of two large fishing lakes outside of the golf footprint will generate sand for course construction.

“There will not be any cuts into the existing landforms except where we choose to incorporate creeks and ditches into the design of the golf courses,” says Cutten. “It is our goal to create natural looking landforms which accentuate inherent features for the benefit of golf and it’s a rare opportunity to have so much land to work with, which will allow the most natural and sensitive areas of the site to remain unaltered and serve as beautiful landscape features.”

The routing of the courses and practice facilities was a collaborative effort between all three WAC Golf partners and Bakst.

“It was most definitely a fun and creative process,” says Cutten. “But, as you can imagine, it was also incredibly challenging to zero in on where we would plan everything when starting with 6.1 square miles of land, without any limitations on where or how much land we could utilise.”

The masterplan was submitted to Martin County almost two years after Bakst identified the land.

“The site is so vast that it would have allowed for many options,” says Cutten. “However, Kenny’s vision is to preserve all of the natural areas of the 3,900-acre ranch, 95 per cent of which will remain as green open space. Locating golf in the southern third of the site, far removed from both people and traffic, will provide golfers with an incredibly remote and serene experience in uninhibited nature.”

Once the team had settled on that area, design work began. “We would have plans spread out on a dining room table for weeks at a time,” says Cutten. “Then we would share options with Kenny to get his thoughts, which, not surprising to us, were always invaluable. It took nearly a year to settle on our current routings and we are still working on minor refinements every time we are on site together.

“The flow of holes was very important to us, as was the distinctiveness of the two courses. The core principles of routing – changes of direction, wind and sun angles and so on – were of course critical, but exploring the site’s diverse habitats, while preserving their best parts, was equally significant. We simply let the site inform our decision making, and did not hesitate to make adjustments in the field where the inclusion of site assets could further enhance the journey.”

The two eighteen-hole layouts – East and West – both max out at around 7,500 yards.

“The site characteristics will help to differentiate the courses from each other, and we will employ traditional design elements reflecting their differing landscapes,” says Cutten. “One course will be broader and bolder, with sweeping views across the entire golf course, while the holes on the other course will weave in and out of upland pines and prairie land to provide a more intimate walk through nature.”

The practice areas were given the team’s utmost attention too, with Cutten saying nothing comparable has ever been built. “That’s a bold statement, but Kenny is known for his love of practice and belief that great practice facilities are a source of great enjoyment and absolutely critical to providing golfers of all abilities with the means of learning how to take their games from the range to the course.

“The Ranch is a major undertaking, both in project scale and vision. We have been gifted a great opportunity to deliver something truly special for golf in Florida and America. We do not take this opportunity lightly and have crafted a team to help us deliver.”

Earthworks for mass grading, drainage and irrigation could begin as early as autumn 2023, with construction of the courses and practice facilities anticipated to begin in winter 2024.

Peek Inside Grove XXIII, Michael Jordan’s Invite-Only Golf Club

Peace and seclusion are a large part of why Michael Jordan loves the game of golf. However, the legendary NBA star is one of the most recognizable people on the planet, and no matter which course he’s on, he’s still subject to waiting for those playing ahead of him to tee off, during which time they often realize who he is. He wanted a course more tailored to a quicker pace of play, and one which would allow him to control the guest list—and that is how Grove XXII was born.

Located in Hobe Sound, Florida, Grove XXIII opened in the Fall of 2019. The private golf club includes an 18-hole course, a main clubhouse, a gatehouse, a learning facility, and a practice range. There are even drones that deliver snacks and beverages to members during play. The member list includes a who’s who of celebrities and professional athletes who all have received personal invitations from Jordan. The 15,000-square-foot clubhouse was designed by Nichols Architects and Dailey Janssen, and the curved structure is inspired by the precision and flow of a golf swing. Inside are a pro shop, bar, lounging areas, and men’s and women’s locker rooms. The golf course sits on a former citrus grove and was designed by world-renowned course designer Bobby Weed with the owner’s style and speed of play in mind. Some pro golfers have even nicknamed the course Slaughterhouse XXIII for its unique fairways that give an advantage to shorter hitters like Jordan.

Enlisted with the responsibility of creating a home-away-from-home ambiance for the clubhouse was design firm Kemble Interiors, which has worked on a wide range of commercial and residential projects in the US and abroad.

Jordan was involved in each of the design meetings and the goal was to create the vibe of a boutique hotel rather than a stuffy clubhouse. “Working with Michael Jordan is like standing in a centrifuge of charisma and magnanimousness. I’ve never had the privilege of working with someone whose presence was quite that electrifying or inspiring,” firm principal Celerie Kemble tells Architectural Digest. “Michael is also a natural team builder who was very considerate and patient with us as we worked to develop a design vocabulary that reflected his intent—a space that was luxurious and masculine but structurally modern and sculpturally kinetic.”

As soon as members enter the main lounge, Jordan’s love of leather and wood resonates throughout the clubhouse. “The main bar and community table are both live edge, chunky wood pieces that feel really substantial and really anchor the rooms,” says designer Caitlin Kah, who oversaw the project while at Kemble Interiors and has since established her own firm. “We were looking at how do you use some of these simple materials in different ways to make it more dynamic.” Kah, an avid golfer, says her favorite design elements are the custom tobacco leaf wall panels in the main lounge, which are a nod to Jordan’s love of luxury cigars. One of Jordan’s favorites is the Gregories Pineo cork wallpaper used in the men’s locker room and how it contrasts with the dark lockers.

The clubhouse was designed to maximize views of the course. Located in the middle is a large bar that features Holland and Sherry leather chairs. The bar opens out onto the terrace, which includes David Sutherland furniture, and overlooks the first hole and the 18th green. “It was definitely informed by [Jordan], his aesthetic, and his need for comfort,” says Kah.

With all the amenities Grove XXIII offers, you’re likely to find Jordan at the course when he’s home in Florida. But remember, invitation only!

Bert Krebs was out on the water at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge when he was bitten Feb. 19.

The Hobe Sound resident has been surfing since he was a kid growing up in Maryland. And in Florida, he's been surfing for 35 years. The public beach and Wildlife Rescue Beach in Hobe Sound are his go-to spots.

“Water is just a part of my life since I was a little kid,” he said. “But really when I got to Florida, I started surfing more in 1986.”

He said surfing is a passion of his. He even shares that passion with his son.

And the two have seen plenty of wildlife in the water – turtles, manatees, dolphins, fish and birds.

Krebs typically surfs twice a day. He said he sees sharks all the time while out on the water.

“I saw two sharks that morning in a wave just swimming by, and so you know they're there,” he said. “You think about it, but I never thought it would happen.”

Krebs said he and his buddies had been surfing for about 10 minutes. Krebs had just finished riding a wave and was getting back on his board.

“I thought I kicked the rock or something. And all of a sudden there was a bite. Two seconds later it was done. It bit me,” he said. “I either pulled my leg away, or it let go. And I knew right away when it happened. I knew it was a bite, and I yelled 'shark bite' to my friends.”

He paddled in, and his friends responded to see the bloody mess.

Krebs’ friend carried him over the dune and to an off-duty firefighter, who was waiting with a towel, water and gauze.

"I passed out apparently in the ambulance. I think my blood pressure dropped and it kind of freaked out," said Krebs.

Krebs said this shocking event won’t keep him from surfing.

"I'm sure I'll think a little bit more about it when I'm out there, and I won't forget it. Maybe I'll change my patterns. I don't really know," said Krebs.

His surgeon, Dr. Faris Azar, said a week later that everything was looking good.

“Bert's made a tremendous recovery after being bitten by a shark,” the doctor said. “We're about at the week mark, and I'm happy to see the progress that he's made since then. He's motivated, and I suspect it'll continue to do well, and he'll ultimately get back to surfing.”

Krebs estimates he’ll be sidelined for at least a couple months.

“I think they want it to seal up so it's basically waterproof,” he said. “And I'm missing my little, the end of my little toe got bitten off. So, I think that's probably the worst part.”
