“Certainly a risk, especially in the summertime when you have temperatures outside in the 90s; that’s why you have to act very promptly, as we did,” explained Battalion Chief Michael Kane.
The fast work paid off as no one suffered any medical issues from the sweltering heat. How bad was it inside?
“Bad enough where it’s very, very hot, and of course, we have people that’s on oxygen and older people who need their air conditioner,” Gonzalez said.
“It can get uncomfortable, but I guess it happened so quick that I didn’t get to experience it. I came outside,” said resident Lee Gutierrez, who said it was cooler outside in the shade than inside without air conditioning.
There’s a reason why firefighters react so quickly to situations like this. The tragedy that happened in Hollywood during Hurricane Irma, when a power outage led to 14 elderly residents dying in the heat, left an indelible impression on first responders. At first, they thought today’s situation in Dania Beach had the potential to be dangerous.
“Classic case, and there have been situations in the past where power was out in assisted living facilities, lessons were learned that those residents need to be relocated as soon as possible,” Kane said.
Because the staff at the facility and firefighters reacted quickly, no one suffered any heat-related issues.

An entity linked to a Boston investment firm has won an auction for Spirit Airlines’ former Broward County corporate headquarters, one of its most valuable assets.
DPC HoldCo LLC, an affiliate of Hill City Capital in Boston, made a winning offer of $93.25 million in cash. That was slightly up from its earlier bid in July of $88 million.
The auction took place Aug. 11 at the now defunct airline’s former headquarters, 1731 Radiant Dr.
The results were revealed in a notice of auction results in a court filing on Aug. 12 at 8:07 p.m with the New York bankruptcy court overseeing Spirit’s case. That court will still have to approve the sale in a hearing scheduled for Aug. 19.
REM Acquisition LLC was chosen as the alternate bid.
Spirit shut down abruptly on May 2 during its second bankruptcy filing. While the airline had reached a broad framework with creditors to restructure the company, spiraling fuel costs due to the U.S. and Iran war was the final nail in the coffin, the company said then.
As a result, 17,000 people were put out of work. More than 2,500 employees were based at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Just two years earlier, the airline moved into its new headquarters in Dania Beach. Spirit was important for Broward’s economy. The carrier accounted for the most passengers at FLL in 2025.
Since it ceased flying, the company has sought to sell off assets such as coveted boarding gates it had access to across U.S. airports and some airplanes. The airline also had to return property, including many jets, to companies from which they were leased. The process is complex and ongoing.
The former headquarters, in a shopping and dining area called Dania Pointe, consists of four buildings, the main one six stories and 180,000 square feet. An adjacent building, which has a flight simulator, was used to train pilots.
Court documents indicate DPC’s offer would include all four of those buildings: the six-story main campus, a two-story ancillary building, a six-story parking garage and a two-story training center where the airline had a flight simulator.

A decades-old population of vervet monkeys living near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport could become the focus of an effort to change how Florida classifies the animals, potentially allowing injured monkeys to be treated and returned to the wild.
The monkeys have lived in mangroves near the airport for nearly 80 years after escaping from a South Florida medical testing lab and zoo in the 1940s.
David Blewitt has lived on the edge of the mangroves for decades.
"I've seen them many, many times," he said. "They came over looking for bananas. They're like little kids holding their hands up for an allowance."
Missy Williams, who runs the Dania Beach monkey sanctuary, is now asking whether the longtime residents should be reclassified as native to Florida.
"It would be interesting just to see if our followers would be on board with possibly wanting them to be grandfathered in as a native species in the state of Florida," Williams said.
She is posing the question on social media to gauge public support. A change in classification could affect how the monkeys are treated when they are injured.
"We do have permits to be able to actually treat them," Williams said. "Once trapped, we can't release them. That's because they're considered a non-native species. If they are considered a native species, we'd be able to trap, treat, and release them back to their family group," she said.
According to Williams, just under three dozen vervet monkeys remain in the area.
"These animals are considered just non-native. They haven't spread from the area they were introduced to. The population is very small. Matter of fact, it's actually shrinking, and there seems to be no notable damage to the surrounding ecosystem," Williams said.
But Ron Magill of the Zoo Miami Foundation strongly opposes the idea of reclassifying the monkeys as native.
"It is an absolute Pandora's box waiting to be opened," Magill said.
"South Florida is the Ellis Island of non-native species. Everything comes into here. What happens is, if that happens in New York, if it happens in Michigan during the first winter, those animals are gone. They don't survive. In Florida, it's like being introduced to Club Med. They not only survive, they thrive, and then they become a real problem," he said.
Magill said he is concerned that if the population grows, the monkeys could spread disease and have other unforeseen effects.
"No one loves wildlife, no one loves animals more than I do, and it's because of that I want to protect our native wildlife. I want to protect our ecosystems," Magill said.
Williams stressed that she is only testing the waters for now to determine whether there is public support for the idea.
She said she will then consider whether to petition the state for a change in the monkeys' classification.

An affiliate DPC Holdco LLC set up by the Boston-based Hill City Capital hedge fund became the “stalking horse bidder” last month for the 8.3-acre campus, which Spirit had occupied since the spring of 2024. It submitted an opening offer of $88 million.
The location at 1731 Radiant Drive includes four buildings offering office space, a parking garage, a flight crew training facility, and housing for visiting employees.
Hill City Capital has yet to declare what it intends to do with its new acquisition. The firm’s top investment holdings include stakes in MasTec Inc. of Coral Gables and Dycom Industries of West Palm Beach.
Another bidder, REM Acquisitions LLC, was named the alternate buyer despite a higher offer of $97 million. But according to the court filing posted late Wednesday, the bid “would have resulted in lower net proceeds to the Debtors’ estates after taking into account the amount that would have been payable to the Stalking Horse Bidder and certain other associated expenses.”
A hearing on the sale is scheduled for Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, the filing said.
The sale was orchestrated by Eastdil Secured LLC of Miami, a prominent commercial real estate investment firm which has a track record of selling $2.7 trillion in properties. In a court filing, the firm reported that Royal Caribbean, the Miami-based cruise line operator, as well as Broward County and an individual named Gerry Glass had expressed interest in the Dania Beach property.
But the county withdrew from consideration over zoning issues. Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to questions about its reported interest. Glass could not be reached for comment.
Spirit, which had not earned a net profit since before the COVID-19 pandemic, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors for the second time in less than year in August 2025, and permanently ceased operations on May 2 amid a spike in fuel costs driven by the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
Management laid off 17,000 people systemwide — including close to 5,000 employees in South and Central Florida. The company abruptly ended all of its flights in the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America after failing to secure a $500 million loan bailout from the U.S. government.
Spirit, which was once the busiest airline in terms of passengers carried to and from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, proceeded to wind down its business through the sale of assets including the headquarters campus, dozens of aircraft, various airport usage rights and a wide array of other property.
On Tuesday, Spirit reported that former rival JetBlue Airways, which has emerged as the largest operator at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, acquired flight simulator equipment in Orlando from the bankruptcy estate for $2.7 million. JetBlue was the only bidder, according to a court filing.
In July, JetBlue won the bidding for Spirit’s landing and takeoff rights at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

The now-defunct Broward airline has chosen a lead bidder in the sale of its former corporate headquarters in Dania Beach, among its most valuable assets.
DPC HoldCo LLC, an affiliate of investment firm Hill City Capital in Boston, has offered to pay Spirit $88 million in cash as what’s dubbed a proposed purchase price, according to court documents filed 8:52 p.m. Wednesday in the New York bankruptcy court overseeing the case.
The deadline to object to that agreement is 4 p.m. Friday, July 31.
The lead bidder is also referred to as the stalking horse bidder in bankruptcy parlance, meaning it sets the baseline for future competitive bids.
The deadline for receiving those bids from other interested parties is Aug. 7. If one or more is received in addition to the stalking horse, an auction will be held Aug. 11.

For example, in June, Spirit agreed to turn over to Delta Air Lines “gates C4 and C6, the ticketing lobby, and support space” at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for $12 million in a competitive bidding process, according to court filings. JetBlue recently won rights to 22 gates at New York’s La Guardia Airport.
