Bakey comes from master baker, cookbook author, and internationally acclaimed chef Uri Scheft, whose name has become synonymous with modern babka.
Scheft founded Lehamim Bakery in Tel Aviv before co-founding New York City’s celebrated Breads Bakery, helping introduce a new generation of pastry lovers to the rich, twisted Eastern European bread. He later published the James Beard Award-nominated cookbook Breaking Breads and launched Bakey in Boston in 2021.
Now, he’s bringing that same philosophy to South Florida alongside business partner Amir Vadash, whose family operated Israel’s Vadash Bakery for more than six decades.
While the chocolate babka remains the bakery’s signature item, it’s hardly the only reason to visit.
Guests can choose from whole loaves or slices of chocolate babka, almond babka with German marzipan, and rotating seasonal flavors. The pastry case is equally tempting, filled with buttery chocolate and goat cheese croissants, rugelach, cheese sticks, and golden, flaky burekas stuffed with cheese, potatoes, or spinach.
Fresh challah, naturally fermented sourdough, New York-style bagels, rolls, and artisan breads are baked throughout the day, staying true to Bakey’s motto that “the oven is always on.”
Bakey isn’t just a bakery. It’s designed as an all-day café where guests can settle in with breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon coffee break.
The menu includes breakfast plates, freshly prepared salads, sandwiches, and grab-and-go options, along with its extensive bakery selection. Every item is made in-house using fresh ingredients, unbleached flour, and natural sourdough.
Coffee is equally important here. Bakey serves premium beans sourced from Umbria, Italy, roasted off-site and ground fresh in-house for each cup.
The bakery has transformed the longtime Kosher Bagel Cove space into a bright, modern café designed by Alona Eliasi. Inside, warm wood accents, greenery, and minimalist décor create an inviting atmosphere. And, of course, the beautiful pastry displays greet guests as soon as they walk through the door.
The café seats about 50 indoors and another 70 on its outdoor patio, making it an easy spot to linger over coffee and pastries or grab breakfast on the go.
Bakey also offers catering, wholesale bakery services, holiday menus, and delivery through Uber Eats and DoorDash.

Kosher Mania is now open in Hallandale Beach, adding a new casual dairy restaurant to South Florida’s busy kosher dining scene. The restaurant is serving a broad menu built around pizza, pasta, salads and sandwiches from its location on Diplomat Parkway.

Its wide-ranging format also makes the restaurant useful for groups deciding between a full meal and something lighter. Guests can keep things simple with a slice or sandwich, choose a salad, or sit down with a pasta dish. The dairy menu gives families an approachable alternative to the area’s many meat restaurants.
The opening expands the kosher dairy choices around Hallandale Beach, which has become one of South Florida’s strongest kosher restaurant hubs. Diners in nearby Hollywood, Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach are also within easy reach of the new restaurant.
Kosher Mania sits on Diplomat Parkway, close to the Diplomat Beach Resort and the residential neighborhoods along the Intracoastal. Its menu is suited to local diners and travelers looking for a straightforward kosher meal near the beach and surrounding hotels.
The restaurant’s artwork leans into its South Florida setting, combining palm trees and an ocean sunset with pizza and pasta imagery. The branding makes the concept clear: approachable kosher comfort food in a casual beach-area setting.
Hallandale Beach continues to draw kosher diners from across Broward and northern Miami-Dade counties. Kosher Mania’s location puts it near a cluster of synagogues, hotels, vacation rentals and other kosher businesses serving both the year-round community and seasonal visitors.

And if you’re listening to the customers in front of you — and judging from the lines there on opening day, there will be customers in front of you — you will hear the words “chocolate babka.” Heed them. Because you don’t want to miss out on the best baked goods in the business.
The creation of internationally known chef and baker Uri Scheft, Bakey arrives with a big reputation and decades of culinary experience behind it. Scheft, who grew up in Israel and Denmark and honed his craft across Europe, is best known as the founder of Lehamin Bakery in Tel Aviv and for co-founding Breads Bakery in New York. He then went on to open five Bakey locations in Boston, with two more on the way.
He’s also known for his unique babka — shockingly moist and chocolatey with a surprising depth of flavor — and also sourdough bread, challah, cakes, goat cheese croissants, burekas, muesli rolls, savory cheese sticks with Gouda and rugelach, all of which will be sold at the Hallandale Beach Bakey.
The restaurant, in the former space of Kosher Bagel Cove on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, seats about 50 indoors and 70 in the sprawling covered outdoor patio. There are also grab-and-go options available as well as a small menu of sandwiches and salads.
Ask Scheft what his favorite baked good is, he laughs and says, “I love all my children equally.” But the chocolate babka is by far Bakey’s most popular item, with the almond babka not far behind.
Charlie LoGrasso, head production manager of Bakey in Boston, said the chocolate babka’s popularity has a downside.
“We do run out of babka,” he admits. “It’s so popular. But we just keep making more. The ovens are always on, so there’s always more babka to come.”
LoGrasso, who’s in town for a couple of weeks to help get the South Florida Bakey up and running, said there’s a reason for the obsession: Bakey’s babka has a completely different texture than most babkas.
“Babka has the stigma of being dry,” he says. “This is a whole different world.”
The secret? Scheft imports hazelnut chocolate spread from Israel that isn’t available in the U.S., then adds a dark chocolate inside.
“We’re looking for the nuttiness of the hazelnut itself, and we’re looking for the sweetness of the chocolate,” LoGrasso explains. “We use the dark chocolate to give it a little bitter taste, and you get an explosion of flavor.”
Bread is also a big draw at Bakey, particularly the challah and the sourdough. Scheft uses sourdough in most of the bread, including the focaccia, a trick he learned in Rome.
The sourdough “gives it another layer of taste,” he explains. “I really like the sour smell of it. First thing I do when I cut the bread is smell it, even before I look at it. Then I taste it. It’s great because it’s more healthy for you and has a longer shelf life, and when it starts to get stale it always has a second life as toast.”
There have been a few challenges with the kitchen, namely using an oven designed for making bagels to bake bread. But Scheft and his team are mastering the subtle differences and plan to offer many of the same loaves available in Boston, though the bakeries will have a few different offerings.
“We don’t have the same coffee program in Boston,” Scheft says. “But if it works here, we might circle back there.”
The Hallandale Beach Bakey, which will also offer catering, a special events menu and seasonal food and drink for the Jewish holidays, is the first of three planned South Florida bakeries; locations in Aventura and Fort Lauderdale are coming soon.
