Silver City is a quiet town near the Arizona border that appeals to those who enjoy outdoor activities and exploring museums. It is right next to the Gila National Forest and the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, where the Mogollon people built rooms into the canyon alcoves in the late 1200s. Bring a tent and camp here, or just walk the nearly endless trails to take in the cliffs and waterfalls.Head back into town after a day in the national forest to explore the museums downtown. The Silver City Museum occupies the 1881 Ailman House and traces the town's history back to its founding in 1870, when prospectors arrived after silver was discovered here. It has an extensive collection of artifacts related to the mining industry that used to define the town. For more history, check out the Western New Mexico University Museum in Fleming Hall. It holds one of the world's largest collections of Mimbres pottery, most of it excavated from a single site south of town.
Mesilla is a town with a lot of history, serving as the capital of the Confederate Territory of Arizona in 1861 and 1862 and later drawing the outlaws and gamblers who filled its cantinas. Pancho Villa passed through, and Billy the Kid was tried and sentenced to hang here in April 1881. That history comes alive at the Mesilla Plaza, a National Historic Landmark ringed by adobe buildings that now hold stores and restaurants. The Basilica of San Albino faces the plaza, its brick sanctuary raised in 1906 on the site of the older adobe church.The Billy the Kid Gift Shop on the southeast corner of the plaza is worth a stop for the building alone. It served as the Dona Ana County courthouse where the Wild West's most famous outlaw heard his sentence. The area around town is also striking, most notably at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park. The day-use park opened in 2008 on 305 acres of river woodland and restored wetland along the Rio Grande, and Audubon lists it as an Important Bird Area, so bring binoculars.
Living up to its name, Cloudcroft has an elevation of 8,676 feet. This makes it entirely different from the stereotypical view of New Mexico of deserts and cacti. Cloudcroft has mild summers and forests, making it a must-see for nature lovers. If you are looking for adventure, come in the winter to enjoy some winter sports at Ski Cloudcroft. Snowmaking usually opens the beginner slope and the tubing hill by the middle of December, while the upper mountain waits on natural snow. The area runs group lessons and easy slopes, along with runs for more experienced skiers.
If you cannot make it in the winter, there are still plenty of reasons to visit Cloudcroft in the warmer months. The Mexican Canyon Trestle sits just west of town in the Trestle Recreation Area, and short trails lead down to it. Built in 1899 for the Cloud-Climbing Railroad, the curved timber span runs 323 feet long and stands 52 feet above the canyon floor. Walking out onto it is prohibited, but the overlook off US 82 makes for a good photo. And for a more relaxing stop, visit the Sacramento Mountains Museum to learn more about how people came to settle in the area and how the geography affected settlement and life in those early days.
Ruidoso sits north of Cloudcroft, and it also benefits from its location in the Sacramento Mountains. Whether you visit in the summer or winter, there is always something to do in Ruidoso. For winter adventurers, the town's geography leads to winter sports activities centered around Ruidoso's Winter Park, a few miles north in Alto. The park offers snow tubing that is fun for the whole family and heated igloo rentals to warm up after a day out in the snow.Summer in Ruidoso has long meant horse racing at Ruidoso Downs, though flood damage in 2024 and 2025 moved the meet and its signature All American Futurity to The Downs at Albuquerque, and the 2026 season is running there as well. The track itself remains the heart of the horse business in town, with the sales pavilion and the Billy the Kid Casino still open next door. Just up the highway, the Free Spirits at Noisy Water installation stands outside the Hubbard Museum, where eight bronze horses by sculptor Dave McGary run at one and a half times life size. The sculptures are free to visit, though the museum itself is closed for renovation.
Just north of Albuquerque is the quiet town of Corrales. The town attracts many New Mexican artists to it for its active arts scene and many galleries. The Corrales Bosque Gallery has been running as an artist-owned cooperative since 1994, and its member artists staff the place themselves, so the person selling you a piece often made it. For a different taste of local art, visit Corrales Fine Arts, which painter Barb Clark co-founded in 2016 to show her own oils alongside work by other artists in the village.After a day of appreciating art, finish it off by visiting some of the local wineries and breweries that make Corrales such a comfortable place to spend an afternoon. Grapes have grown in this stretch of the valley for more than a century, and Corrales Winery pours its own bottles a short drive down the main road. Ex Novo Brewing Company stands as one of the best in the area, with a taproom and a shaded beer garden spread over nearly three acres.

See some of that local artwork at the Jezebel Studio and Gallery on the boardwalk, which combines fine art with handmade lighting and furnishings. For some shopping, head to Cowgirl Red, with an extensive collection of vintage cowboy boots and turquoise jewelry.To meet some of the locals that make Madrid so great, grab dinner at the Mine Shaft Tavern. Built in 1947, it was the last company building the coal operation put up before the mines closed, and it now serves a green chile cheeseburger that regulars will argue about at length. The tavern has a lively indoor atmosphere with live music, or you can sit out on the cantina deck above town and watch the light go off the hills.
Taos is a quintessential town in New Mexico, bringing together the region's strong cultural identity with geography that captures the imagination. It is a fine place to spend a calming weekend enjoying a mix of natural and cultural attractions. The town sits near the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, one of the highest bridges in America. You can walk or drive across the bridge to get an impressive view of the gorge and river beneath from a vantage point roughly 600 feet in the air.Back in town, there are plenty of museums to visit that showcase the history and culture of Taos. The Kit Carson House and Museum preserves a Spanish Colonial adobe built around 1825. Carson bought it in 1843 as a wedding present for his bride, Josefa Jaramillo, and lived there until his death in 1868. And at the Harwood Museum of Art, take in artwork that captures the spirit and beauty of northern New Mexico.
Taos sits a short drive to the south and the Colorado border is close to the north, and between them is the tiny resort town of Red River. Red River is always welcoming, whether you choose to come in the winter or summer. Winter activities center around the Red River Ski and Summer Area, which rises straight out of the top of Main Street. Beginners get gentle terrain at the base, and the runs steepen the higher you ride.In the summer, the surrounding mountains make for great hiking or horseback riding. Red River Stables sits at the east end of Main Street and runs guided rides by the hour under permit on the Carson National Forest. Its longest outing climbs toward Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico at 13,161 feet. And after a day riding horses, finish it off with a meal and music at Texas Reds Steakhouse. The steakhouse has been serving Red River since 1967 and still books live music most nights.
Where the state slows down
Elevation decides most of it. Red River and Cloudcroft build their calendars around snow, which makes February a lift-ticket month and July a trail month, while Mesilla and Silver City stay mild enough to walk a plaza or a museum block for most of the year. Size decides the rest. Madrid and Corrales are small enough that the person selling a piece of art often made it, while Silver City and Taos have the collections that need a full afternoon. Taos is the busiest of the eight, with museums downtown and the gorge bridge about ten miles northwest, among the better-known natural wonders in the state. Ruidoso is the one to check on before you go, since the racing that shaped its summers is running in Albuquerque for now.
