Midland High was in control for most of its football game against visiting Inglewood (Calif.) on Thursday night.
However, the Bulldogs couldn’t put away the Sentinels.
Inglewood scored 35 second-half points to stun Midland High with a 43-42 comeback victory in a battle of California vs. Texas at Astound Broadband Stadium.
The Sentinels (2-3) fought back from a 28-8 halftime deficit and a 35-15 deficit in the third quarter to down the Bulldogs (1-4) in their non-district finale.
Semaj Welch had 15 carries for 132 yards and four second-half touchdowns to lead Inglewood’s rally.
MHS squandered a 331-yard performance from its ground game and a fine showing by senior Wyatt King, who ran 18 times for 135 yards and two TDs.
Leading 42-35, the Bulldogs shanked a punt, giving Inglewood possession on their own 26 with a delay of game penalty tacked on to the end of the play.
The Sentinels took advantage of the short field when Welch scored on a 22-yard TD run with 2 minutes, 36 seconds remaining.
Inglewood followed with a 2-point pass from Lincoln Jahn to Donovin Randolph to take its first lead of the game at 43-42.
On the ensuing possession, Stanford commit Sarrell Howard sacked MHS for an 8-yard loss on fourth-and-10 at the Bulldog 32, leading to a turnover on downs and essentially sealing the game for Inglewood.
“I’m thankful for Midland, Texas, for hosting us,” Sentinels head coach Mil’Von James said. “We’re super grateful for the opportunity. It’s a wonderful atmosphere. Texas football is pretty impressive. But our team, the grit and tenacity that we talk about and resiliency. We talk about the core values of our program and discipline and resiliency are one of the key factors. The kids showed that in the second half and they fought back to a victory.”
Trailing 28-8 at halftime, Inglewood started the second half on a positive when Welch scored on a 48-yard run on the Sentinels’ first drive.
MHS responded when backup quarterback Holt Howard completed a 17-yard TD pass to Ross Blackburn, extending their lead to 35-15 with 3:37 left in the third quarter.
However, Inglewood followed with a 63-yard kickoff return by SMU commit Andre Nickerson, which set up a 10-yard TD run from Welch. The Sentinels trailed 35-21 with 3:16 left in the third.
MHS gave Inglewood a chance to get back into it when it fumbled on its next possession.
The Sentinels cashed in when Jahn threw a 30-yard TD pass to Allen Wilson on third-and-22, narrowing their deficit to 35-27 with 23 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Dawgs answered on their next drive when sophomore Evan Taylor scored on a 13-yard run, pushing MHS to a 42-27 lead with 10:03 remaining.
Inglewood had slim chance to win when it faced a fourth-and-8 on its own 27 on next possession, but Jahn completed a 41-yard pass to Wilson to keep the Sentinels’ hopes alive.
Two plays later, Welch scored on a 9-yard TD run and the Sentinels added a 2-point conversion, narrowing their deficit to 42-35 with 7:59 left.
“Anytime you lose the lead like that, it falls on one guy and that’s on me,” Bulldogs head coach Thad Fortune said. “I’ve got to find a way to help our team to close out games better than I did tonight. We just didn’t execute, frankly, in all three phases of the game in the second half and credit to Inglewood, who made some outstanding plays. They’ve got great players and they found a way to get them the ball and get stops when they needed to and make big plays when they needed to.
“It’s crushing for our kids and our staff and our community and a lot of people work really hard for this thing. It’s disheartening to let them down like that. We’ve got to bounce back and get ready for district play.”
MHS hosts Wolfforth Frenship in its District 2-6A opener at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10.
The Bulldogs went into halftime with 28-8 lead when Love scored on a 1-yard run as time expired. Love rushed for two TDs.
“I don’t think for one second that anyone on our side underestimated these guys,” Fortune said. “We’ve seen three games of tape on them. We knew how talented they were and how explosive they could be. We were able to bottle them up for a little bit, but we just couldn’t hold on. A lot of credit to them for traveling and playing the way they did tonight. It was an unbelievable job by Coach James and his staff, an outstanding job. I’m disappointed that I couldn’t get it done for our players and our staff and our community.”
Carter Anderson had six carries for 75 yards for the Bulldogs; Jordan McGowan had 36 rushing yards and 28 receiving yards on two catches; and Izaiah Miller had four carries for 32 yards and a TD.
MHS safety Carson Ham had his team-leading fifth interception in the first quarter.
