Home Care Lawndale, CA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Beach Boys Historic Landmark gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. “My dad came home from the hospital, then to hospice care for 4 months, then passed at home. Carrie helped our family during multiple transitions of his care. She is professional and efficient, but also compassionate and empathic. She was a core contact for our family from in- and out-of town, and always responded quickly to calls, emails or txts. Dad's caregiver needs and schedules were ever-changing and Carrie was always able to adjust, helping us to coordinate needs from hospice and family. We are so thankful Dad was able to spend his last months at home. We continue to use Carrie’s services for our mom. The caregivers are trained well and often became friends to my folks. I highly recommend Carrie’s services.”

“Always Best Care was there for us after my wife's surgery. We had a caregiver come each day for two weeks to help bath, feed, walk, and tidy the house during working hours so that my wife was not alone. Our caregiver Naomi was a God sent and so delightful. I often overheard my wife and Naomi singing together. What a joy! Thank you Carrie and ABC Senior Services for making this service available to Beach Cities.”

“I would highly recommend Always Best Care Senior Servicesto help you navigate the care of your loved ones in their senior years of need. We called them when we found out my 92 year old mother in law was due to be released from the hospital but clearly not able to care for herself upon her release. It was a stressful situation but carrie knew exactly the right questions to ask and heard our needs and pointed us in the right direction with all that needed to be done. She set up a call with hospice who arranged for all necessary equipment to be delivered in less than a 24 hour period. She also set up 3 very competent experienced care givers to be at the home in that same 24 hour period. The speed and professionalism in which this all happened could not have handled any better in my opinion. Working with Carrie at Always Best Care Senior Services put our minds at ease and got everything set up for us to care for my mother in law. Carrie was hands on in meeting with us and introducing the care givers and involved with speaking to doctors and hospice and everyone involved with my mother in laws care. She made a highly stressful time much more manageable and guided us every step of the way. She also followed up and made sure all that was supposed to be done was being taken care of. You are in good hands when calling on them for your loved ones care. I am happy to speak to anyone directly if you would like to ask any questions I give my permission for Always Best Care to give my personal phone number out to speak to anyone who is considering using their services.”

“We have had 24/7 care for my mother with ABC for over 2 years. The care and compassion they showed for her really touched my heart. I have had to ask for last minute help when another caregiver (not from ABC) could not show up for a shift, Carrie and staff always came through for me. She has always been available to work out problems and last minute requests, I can't say enough about how important that has been to me when I live out of state.I have really been able to rely on their judgement once they got to know my moms likes and needs, they always tried to match her with a caregiver that she would also feel comfortable with personally. The caregivers were long term, they did not come and go, mom really became attached and appreciated them. The caregivers speak highly about Carrie as their employer, they have mentioned to me they really feel like she cares and looks after them as well. Touches like Loli dropping by for a visit to chat with mom, or remembering her birthday with a bunch of flowers was so great. I would definitely recommend!”

“We are deeply grateful to Carrie and to two of the ABC caregivers in particular, María Flores and Soledad, for their professionalism, dedication and superb service over the course of nearly two years. They provided coverage on evening shifts on weekends and some weekdays —as well as on occasional overnight shifts— for my mother who was in the early-to-moderate stages of Alzheimer’s. (We recently moved her into an assisted living facility.) Because our need for ABC's services was sporadic and variable, Carrie and her staff often had to juggle quite a bit to accommodate us — for which we are grateful. Occasionally we’d be assigned a caregiver who wasn’t the best fit but Carrie was always responsive to our concerns and would work with us to find a different caregiver. We also appreciate the “added value” that Loli brought to the table — her overall expertise on elder care, knowledge about related resources, and guidance on how to make our home safer for my mother. We are pleased to highly recommend Carrie and ABC for your in-home eldercare needs.”

She was very detail-oriented in acquiring the necessary info from us, and helped us to find a few places with availability that we could visit. I very much appreciated her knowledge of so many various communities, her professionalism, her efficiency, and the wide range of items that she suggested we consider, that we may not have thought of on our own. I would highly recommend her placement services.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Lawndale, CA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Inca Gourmet Peruvian Buffet or visit Hawthorne Historical Society, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Lawndale, CA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Lawndale, CA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Lawndale, CA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Lawndale, CA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Lawndale, CA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Lawndale, CA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Americare Assisted Living
  • Lawndale Healthcare & Wellness Center
  • CarePatrol of South Bay and Thousand Oaks - Simi Valley, CA
  • Bianca Residential Care
  • Senior Care Center
Home Care Lawndale, CA

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Some seniors are more proactive about transitioning to independent living. Others choose to remain home until their care needs or other requirements are satisfied. Remember - our staff is here to help. Contact our office today to learn more about assisted living communities and how we can find a facility that exceeds your expectations.

LAWNDALE, CA — The future is coming to the South Bay: a virtual food hall is bringing new to-go options and tons of flavor.

K2 Restaurants Hospitality Group is bringing SocialEats OnTheGo into the South Bay and Greater Los Angeles area, the group announced Monday.

The company plans to add five new fast-casual dining eateries, including Pop!s Burgers & Shakes, Azule Taqueria, Supertoro, Street Noods and Hollywood Crab Shack in early May at 16711 Hawthorne Blvd, Lawndale.

In January, K2 Restaurants announced its partnership with Cloudkitchens and launched its first virtual food hall in Anaheim. The company also has SocialEats OnTheGo locations in Santa Monica and Hollywood, with plans to open a Mid-Wilshire location.

Like other SocialEats OnTheGo locations, SocialEats OnTheGo South Bay will offer free in-house local delivery through SocialEats Good Eats Delivered program for orders over $15, an offering that’s available at all SocialEats locations via ordersocialeats.com. People can also combine items from any restaurant into one order.

Interested in local real estate?Subscribe to Patch's new newsletter to be the first to know about open houses, new listings and more.

This move helps eliminate the need to place separate orders from each concept at checkout. Deliveries can also be made with third-party delivery options on Postmates, UberEats and Grubhub and Doordash, according to the company.

“SocialEats OnTheGo virtual food hall repurposes the traditional food hall experience into a delivery-only platform and makes our restaurants more accessible and convenient for the consumer,” John Kolaski, owner of K2 Restaurants, said in a statement.

K2 Restaurants launched in 2018 and includes a group of restaurants. K2 is headquartered in Los Angeles with operations across the U.S.

“Our goal is to continue meeting customers where they are with our in-house SocialEats Good Eats Delivered program and making online ordering from multiple restaurants simple and streamline," Kolaski said. "Partnering with a trusted operation like Cloudkitchens has been key to this repurposing and a great way for us to introduce SocialEats to the South Bay.”

People can order food via the website: ordersocialeats.com. SocialEats OntheGo South Bay is also available on Postmates, UberEats and Grubhub and Doordash.

After drawing up plans, scouting potential sites and navigating a pandemic-delayed opening, the team behind Far Field is ready to serve cutting-edge craft beers in the city that the founders call home. Plus, the city needed beer, and this brewery is ready to answer the call.

Founded by husband and wife craft beer enthusiasts James and Regan Bardeen, Far Field will impart the couple’s love of all things beer throughout every recipe and square foot of the brand-new production facility and tasting room. James, with his background in RF engineering, applied his meticulous attention to detail while spearheading the barrel program for Appleton Beer Factory in Wisconsin. Naturally, he will serve as the barrel blender and CEO. Decorated homebrewer and hop head extraordinaire Bryce Lowrance, who hails from the civil engineering field, will man the helm of brewing operations. Lowrance, who has medaled in multiple homebrew competitions, including earning the right to brew his clever Belgian take on Bootlegger’s iconic double IPA, “Knuckle Sandwich,” immediately impressed the Far Field founder with his brewing savvy when the two met by chance in their homebrew club. Rounding out the team is graphic design guru and branding wizard Sean Wright, who will serve as marketing director. All of the eye-catching labels, merch designs and overall aesthetic awesomeness, that’s his doing.

Upon opening, Far Field Beer Co. will feature a tap list that spans the beer style spectrum and reflects the team’s combined admiration of an eclectic mix of beer. Offerings will include West Coast IPAs, hazy IPAs, blonde ales, tart ales and lagers. Eventually, the team will offer an even wider array of styles as production ramps up, as well as churn out barrel aged sours on a limited basis.

While construction is wrapping up, the brewery is currently offering very limited quantities of its beer available for curbside pickup on Farfieldbeer.com. Once the facility opens, visitors can enjoy the crafty, contemporary decor of its tasting room, sip on a wide array of beer styles indoors, or from its outdoor patio, and purchase cans to go.

In Southern California, Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels represents more than Jayhawk football’s return to relevancy.

He’s one of their own, and his every move is watched closely.

Last season, the Lawndale, Calif., native accomplished something that hasn’t happened in 14 years: He led KU (6-6, 3-5 Big 12) to its first bowl appearance since 2008.

Despite playing in just nine games because of a shoulder injury, Daniels threw for 2,014 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions while running for 425 yards and seven more TDs. When the season came to an end, he made the All-Big 12 second team.

The former three-star recruit has undoubtedly come a long way from an 0-9 start in his freshman year. And players and coaches from Southern California have taken notice.

“I think a lot of our kids have Kansas on their radar,” Lawndale High football coach Travis Clark told The Star. “It’s not just our kids at Lawndale, but I think more kids just in the Southern California area. I hope the Kansas program and coaching staff come out here and take advantage of what Jalon has done.

“I don’t even know if they understand the impact he’s had on the kids in this area. I think they could get here and do a little bit of damage (in recruiting).”

Southern California is a hotbed for football talent, having produced a lengthy list of NFL players that includes Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, running back Terrell Davis and former Chiefs star tight end Tony Gonzalez, to name just a few. More recently, the region has produced receiver Michael Thomas and linebacker Clay Matthews.

Now, it seems that Daniels’ 2022 season — and KU’s overall success last year — has become a major talking point in the region.

“Kansas was kind of the darlings of college football last year,” Clark said, “and everybody was rooting for Kansas because they were the underdogs that turned it around. Of course, the quarterback took the biggest spotlight: Jalon Daniels — he’s from here, he went to Lawndale.”

Clark said he believes Southern California could be the newest recruiting hotbed for Kansas.

“I think that really put Kansas football on the map here in Southern California,” he said. “I believe they should piggyback off that. ... I think they need to capitalize on that.

“I believe they can do some great recruiting in Southern California. I would encourage my athletes to play for Kansas. I believe in their coach. I believe in their program.”

Don’t just take Clark’s word for it — Jahmal Wright, one of Clark’s biggest rivals on the field and a good friend off it, also believes KU can compete for Southern California kids. Wright is the football coach at Culver City High and a former KU defensive back (1995-99).

“I’m excited for a (KU) coach to open back up the recruiting lines,” Wright told The Star. “There’s a love for the Midwest within Southern California athletes.”

Wright even runs an offense that’s similar to what KU runs with Daniels.

“The style of play that the Big 12 has with the wide-open offenses and the spread attacks,” Wright said, “a lot of California schools come from those types of offenses.

“It’s a receiver and quarterback’s dream to play in the offenses the Big 12 has, especially KU, with how they do such a great job and are very creative.”

Wright told The Star that a pair of class of 2025 recruits from his team, Myles Singleton and Braylon Singleton, have received scholarship offers from KU. The brothers play both sides of the field — wide receiver and defensive back.

Wright and Clark told The Star that Kansas quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski has come to each school to recruit. They said he’s done an excellent job of branching out and finding talent.

“I absolutely 1,000,000% think that they could break through even more,” Wright said. “I mean, you see the success that Jalon has had and it’s so much talent in our area. It’s an untapped territory with a lot of Kansas’ competition.”

Clark had a suggestion for how the Jayhawks can remain competitive for recruiting victories in the region.

“I think they need to look into getting out here a little more often and send more coaches to cover more area,” Clark said. “San Diego, all the way up to Ventura County and everything in between, they all know about Jalon Daniels.

“So I think they could really sneak a couple of these talented kids that are maybe not going to go to USC or are not going to go to UCLA, or some kids maybe just looking for an opportunity to play outside the state. The talent is high.”

Clark detailed what it would take for KU to more firmly establish itself in the region in the age of conference realignment.

“It’s probably going to take a focused approach from the Kansas side,” he said. “I think they’re probably going to have to maybe spend a little bit more money with their coaching staff and get them out here, maybe visit a little more often, I think, just to show that KU brand. To be able to walk around these high schools and say, ‘Hey, we are here. We are going to be here. We want kids from Southern California.’

“Kansas has a list of success stories from Southern California they can promote. I just think they just need to show up more. People need to see that logo; they need to see that KU brand. They need to see those colors, especially now. You’ve got USC and UCLA stepping into the Big Ten. I just sent a kid to Indiana this past season. So those programs are going to be our backyard — Ohio State, Indiana, etc.

“They’re going to have to try and steal some of that talent from USC and UCLA. So why not Kansas coming in here and stealing some of that talent and taking it to the Big 12?”

The Jayhawks do appear to be well-positioned to continue working the Southern California recruiting pipeline. From afar, Wright and other high school coaches are witnessing a transformation in Lawrence: For the first time in a long time, winning can be listed among the benefits of choosing to play for KU.

“You go to the Booth (David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium) and the atmosphere is crazy,” Wright said. “Lawrence, Kansas is an awesome place to be a college athlete. It’s changed so much since I was there in the ‘90s. I totally enjoyed my experience as a college athlete in Lawrence as somebody coming from Los Angeles to a small town.

“Look at the facility. … To watch the growth of the athletic facilities in the locker rooms and weight rooms, uniforms and equipment, I mean, it’s top-of-the-line, just top-notch.”

One of the most contentious items at yesterday's Metro board meeting was the future Green Line extension to Torrance. After plenty of commentary and discussion, the board voted to move forward with two alternatives in its environmental analysis of the project.

Metro's Green Line Extension to Torrance is funded under voter-approved Measure M sales tax, with a scheduled 2030 opening. The line will extend southward 4-5 miles from the present Redondo Beach Green Line terminus, on or near the existing Harbor Subdivision rail right-of-way. The project has been selected for possible acceleration under the 28 by 2028 initiative.

Similar to last week's committee meeting, there are divided opinions among the cities at and near where the light rail line will be built.

The city of Torrance, as well as South Bay communities further south, express a great deal of interest in making the project happen as soon as possible. Torrance officially favors alternative 1, which is primarily surface light rail in the existing right-of-way (described more below). This alternative is the least expensive, hence the most likely to get built soonest.

Numerous city of Lawndale representatives attended the Metro board meeting speaking against the project. One city representative, citing vibration and noise impacts, asserted that Lawndale preferred "no project" but would settle for "underground." A Lawndale resident asserted that it would "destroy our city" if Metro "dumped a train in our residential section."

(Note that, historically, rail is actually what made Lawndale Lawndale. The Los Angeles and Redondo railways arrived there in 1902 along the city's central artery Hawthorne Boulevard, which was then called Railroad Avenue. That service was later taken over by the Pacific Electric railcar system.)

Several boardmembers expressed sympathy with Lawndale concerns, while still supporting studying the project further. Inglewood Mayor James Butts stated his support to "environmentally shield" houses along the rail right-of-way. County Supervisor Janice Hahn questioned staff to about studying underground options further, though she stressed that she supports moving forward with this extension, as it was promised to county voters. Citing the example of the Metro Gold Line (which passes through several residential areas), both Duarte Mayor John Fasana and L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed that light rail is not as loud nor does it generate the vibrations that heavy rail does.

The board approved receiving the Supplemental Alternative Analysis report (see also the executive summary or the staff presentation) and moving forward with alternatives 1 and 3 described below. The board decision on the final alignment is expected to be at least a year from now.

Torrance Green Line Alternative 1

Alternative 1 is predominantly at-grade surface rail located in the existing Harbor Subdivision rail right-of-way, which is owned by Metro. Several stretches would include road over/undercrossings. Portions of the right-of-way would include walking paths and landscaping.

It would feature two new stations:

A station at Manhattan Beach Boulevard at Inglewood Boulevard was considered (and shown in the above map), but was eliminated due to opposition from Lawndale.

Metro estimates that Alternative 1 would cost $893 million and would service 10,340 daily boardings.

Torrance Green Line Alternative 3

Alternative 3 departs from the Harbor Subdivision right-of-way, instead traveling in the middle of the Hawthorne Boulevard. Below 190th Street, the line would return to the rail ROW where it would run the same as alternative 1 - mostly at grade.

It would feature two new stations:

A station on Hawthorne Boulevard at 166th Street was considered (and shown in the above map), but was eliminated due to opposition from Lawndale.

Metro estimates that Alternative 3 would cost $1 to 1.2 billion and would service 10,640 daily boardings.

Lawndale, California's newest park playfully recreates the city's natural, historic landscape

In Lawndale, California, Rudolph Park host a myriad of paths of which feature a range of interactive spaces and landscape elements interspersed on the way. Not long ago, however, the 1.5-acre lot contributed little to the city and the state’s South Bay area, which was deemed “park poor” due to its lack of pedestrian access to such park. Two non-profit organizations From Lot to Spot (FLTS) and The Trust for Public Land (TPL) worked with Laguna Beach, CA and Pasadena, CA-based landscape architecture firm EPTDESIGN to rejuvenation Rudolph Park. Upon its re-opening, Lawndale Mayor Robert Pullen-Miles described it as “the crown jewel of the city.” The Architect’s Newspaper spoke to the firm to discuss their approach and reasoning behind their design decisions.

The Architect’s Newspaper: What informed the development of the “intellectual” and unstructured play experiences created for children’s areas? Why was this focused on?

EPTDESIGN: The park’s program was developed through community workshops led by FLTS and TPL. Program elements included green space, an amphitheater, a climbing wall, natural play, a restroom, a walking loop, fitness equipment, play for all ages, a picnic area, and a gently rolling lawn. EPTDESIGN developed a concept narrative to tie the program elements together. A narrative based on the site’s natural history grew from the public’s stated desire to have a “natural” space, and as a way to distinguish the park from others in the general area…that centered on a singularly themed play structure.

Could you explain the thought process behind the various topographical elements that feature throughout?

Lawndale sits where the coastal dunes once met the inland prairie, a land characterized by [a] unique topography of dunes and vernal pools. The park seeks to reintroduce the neighborhood to the dunes and prairie that once formed their landscape and to the ecosystems of the hills that frame the region. The park is divided into three zones: The Dunes, Prairie, and Hills. As a result, this playful topographic design allows the visitor to traverse high and low spots. [It] also highlights the site’s low-impact stormwater strategy. To enter the site, one crosses over a vegetated swale and infiltration basin where all stormwater is collected.

With regards to the climbing wall, how does the form and arrangement link to the overall scheme? What material is this and how was the wall constructed?

The concept narrative espoused playful topography as a way to tie the design to the site’s natural history, but the grading was also a very useful design tool to promote safety. The climbing wall and restroom were both grant-funding-contingent program elements that posed site security challenges. Both are large vertical elements that could obstruct sightlines from the street. Through the use of creative grading, the restroom was built into a constructed hillside. The climbing wall was oriented perpendicular to the street, sharing the same earthwork as the restroom structure, thus eliminating hiding spots. Behind and above the restroom and climbing wall, the finish grade slopes away gently, allowing unobstructed sightlines to the back of the park while creating a universally accessible route from the lowest spot in the park up to the highest.

The 50-foot-long climbing wall is an innovative feature, and an expression of horizontal strata, which involved extensive collaboration between the landscape architect, civil and structural engineers, architect, artist, and contractors. The climbing face is built from precast concrete modules that are anchored to a structural retaining wall. To keep cost down, there are only four different modules. Through the use of 3D modeling, the modules were laid out to create a varied and unexpected yet climbable texture while…avoiding the tacked-on look of off-the-shelf climbing wall handholds and integrating artwork.

I would also ask the same thing about the tiles. Are they featured throughout the park or just those pictured?

The tile work was done by artist Frank Bauer. EPTDESIGN worked with Bauer on the subject matter and locations. There are multiple pieces, and they are displayed in each of the three zones. Within the Dunes zone, ceramics were placed in a water runnel, and feature three-dimensional pieces for kids to discover. In the Prairie, tile work can be found in the entry plaza. And in the Hills zone, ceramic flower mosaics were placed in the climbing wall niches. All are intended to be “touched” and not just for visual display.
