Slice and Spice is now open in Blackwood, offering an exciting “East Meets West” dining experience. The restaurant features a dual-menu concept that blends Western favorites—such as delicious pizza, cheesesteaks, and wings—with Eastern specialties including shish kabob, shawarma, falafel and more.
In addition to indoor dining, Slice and Spice also offers a grocery section stocked with Middle Eastern dry goods, refrigerated and frozen items, as well as high-quality butchered meats. And everything at Slice and Spice is Halal prepared.
Slice and Spice is located on the Black Horse Pike in Blackwood, directly across from the Gloucester Premium Outlets. Many may remember this location as the former Italian Village deli from a few years ago. Also across the street, the former Grenloch School was previously converted into Al-Manar Learning Center, which I would expected to bring additional customers to the Slice and Spice restaurant and grocery.
On Sunday, I caught up with Mo, who—along with his father and uncle—opened the restaurant within their community. The family lives in Gloucester Township and Washington Township and collectively brings decades of experience owning and operating restaurants throughout the Delaware Valley. With Slice and Spice, they are shifting their focus closer to home while supporting the local community.
I stopped in during opening weekend and found many happy family members celebrating with the new owners and sampling a wide variety of tasty menu items.
Everything at Slice and Spice is brand new, including the pizza ovens, cheesesteak grills, fryers, and specialized Middle Eastern equipment. This includes multiple vertical shawarma rotisserie broilers and a large rotisserie chicken oven.
I had a busy schedule during my visit last Sunday and wasn’t able to sample many dishes, though co-owner Sam offered me some of their delicious homemade soup—which was incredibly fresh and flavorful.
Slice and Spice is located in a small row of stores across from the Gloucester Premium Outlets. Area residents may recognize the center as also being home to The UPS Store. The restaurant has parking directly in front, with additional parking easily accessible along the side of the building.
The restaurant’s design features a dining area at the front with a variety of tables and televisions. A large entryway leads into the main grocery and kitchen area.
Walking through the dining space and entering the main restaurant and grocery area, the dry goods section is located to the left, featuring a wide variety of Middle Eastern food items, including an impressive selection of specialty spices.
On the right side are several refrigerator and freezer units stocked with beverages such as Pepsi and milk, as well as frozen vegetables, and Eastern-focused items like Kataifi dough and Kunafa desserts.
Slice and Spice also features an on-site butcher area with a variety of meat selections, including some impressive ribeye steaks available during my visit.
In the center of the open grocery and kitchen area, there is plenty of space for customers to place orders while waiting comfortably for their food.
Freshness is clearly a priority for the family-run restaurant, which is likely why they operate both a butcher shop and market on site. This setup allows customers to take fresh ingredients home for their own home kitchens, while ensuring the restaurant has access to the highest-quality products.
As mentioned, shawarma and rotisserie chicken are standout offerings. For those unfamiliar with shawarma, it is similar to a Mediterranean gyro. Both are cooked on a vertical rotating skewer where layers of meat are stacked high and slowly roasted.
The key differences are in preparation and seasoning. Gyros typically feature Mediterranean flavors such as olive oil, lemon, and oregano, while shawarma delivers bolder flavors using spices like coriander, turmeric, and cardamom—though the exact Slice and Spice recipe remains a secret to me!
For the shawarma the meat is shaved into thin slices and wrapped with fresh vegetables and sauces.
While I didn’t get a chance to try a full meal during my visit, Slice and Spice isn’t too far from my house and I’ll definitely be back soon to sample some shawarma, pizza and more.
