The popular Rita’s Water Ice location on Blackwood-Clementon Rd is planning on making a new home just a half mile away from their former location! The frozen treat store’s new Blackwood-area location is expected to be in the Lindenwold Shopping Center (intersection with Laurel Rd), in the former Valu-Cleaners free standing building.Rita’s is a popular frozen water ice and ice cream custard stand which started in the Philadelphia area but is now a National brand with over 500 franchised locations.The Blackwood ...

Rita’s is a popular frozen water ice and ice cream custard stand which started in the Philadelphia area but is now a National brand with over 500 franchised locations.

The Blackwood Rita’s did not open in 2022 at their former location, as that larger property of Rita’s and the Entenmann’s Bakery facility were purchased and demolished to make way for a new Wawa.

A banner that was hanging on the Rita’s building after they closed stated they were operating at the former location for 20 years! The banner also confidently stated “Rita’s Will Be Back In A NEW LOCATION!”

Rita’s Water Ice Blackwood-Clementon Rd Lindenwold

The Lindenwold Shopping Center sits at the intersection of Laurel Rd and Blackwood-Clementon.

The largest tenant for the center is the Sav-A-Lot discount grocery (on the left side), but many also know the property for the popular Don Tequilas restaurant and bar at the far right side.

In the front corner of the property closer to the intersection is a free-standing building which most recently was home to Valu-Clean dry cleaners.

Rita’s is planning on moving into that free standing dry cleaner building.

Considering the size requirements of a Rita’s store, parking needs, and wanting to be close to their former location… it seems like a pretty good match for their new location.

The local Rita’s franchise owners have been working with Lindenwold this year for approvals to operate in the building.

Over the Summer, Lindenwold approved a “Change of Use” for the building, allowing the frozen treat company to operate at the former dry-cleaner building.

With that approval done, the Rita’s team then worked on locking down their final design changes for the building and later this month they will be asking for that final approval ahead of remodeling. The core items to be approved seem to be mostly centered around signage… which is a very common approval item.

We have not spoken to the franchise owners about timing, but let’s hope that they get the final approval to end the year on a high-note, and have plenty of time to have the new Rita’s open for next Spring or Summer!

There are locations in Deptford, Sicklerville, Voorhees, Cherry Hill… a new location just opened in Washington Township, and another is under construction in Glassboro!

As is the case with other recent Chipotle openings, the proposed Blackwood location will have a “Chipotlane” pick-up window. Orders places on the web or mobile, can be picked up via the drive-thru… but there is no speaker for placing orders!

One the same side of Blackwood-Clementon Rd (across Emerson Road) a Republic Bank opened in 2018.

A few buildings down in the empty lot which years ago was East Side Mario’s, a new Burger King is planned. (This would be a relocation of the one up the street)

For many years the owners operated a Rita’s Water Ice location on Blackwood Clementon Rd at Cherrywood Drive.

Bigger plans arose for that lot…namely the development of a new “Super” Wawa, which caused the Rita’s team to look for a new location.

For all of 2022 the Rita’s in Blackwood was not open, as the owners looked for a new location and were granted approvals.

The found their new home just a half mile away at the intersection of Blackwood Clementon road and Laurel Rd.

The new Rita’s home is a free-standing building in the same shopping center that features Sav-A-Lot on one end of the strip mall, and Don Tequilas restaurant on the other end.

To be very clear the new Rita’s Water Ice is a freestanding “pad site” building in the parking lot, which sits closer to the intersection. The distinctive building stylings should give it plenty of free advertising to the traffic driving by.

The building was originally developed as a bank, and spent most of the recent years as a dry-cleaning business.

Like A Spring Flower The New Rita’s Blackwood Blooms

I reported on the plans for the new Rita’s just a few months ago in December when they were granted approval by Lindenwold Land Use Board.

The owners wasted little time getting started on the conversion process to turn what was previously a dull, earth-toned, drab, non-exciting building into something that is fun and eye-catching.

Honestly the transformation is amazing!

In my visit today work was still progressing on the construction, but the distinctive red and white striped exterior was completed, and nicely presented logoed signage was in place around the buildings perimeter.

From my quick look at the progress it appears that likely the one remaining big task was to lay the parking and driveway asphalt around the building, including the drive-thru!

I can’t believe it’s the same building! Even the shape seems different.

The main walk-up ordering windows face towards the shopping center and feature four different windows.

Directly above them is the iconic Rita’s logo with a gelati/custard caricature, and a slogan saying “Ice Custard Happiness”

When I stopped today I spoke briefly with one of the construction workers. With the owners busy I left a card… but the Rita’s Blackwood Facebook page has all the answers I needed for now. But I’ll be back for the opening.

92 Chicken Coming to Clementon – Korean Style Chicken

That being said we do not have an exact date for the opening. Honestly in 2022 it’s just too difficult for even owners to know when they are opening until the day everything comes together (equipment, approvals).

In the last few years the Clementon building has been home to several restaurants, most recently two different Cajun seafood boils (CJ Bok, and Jersey Crab).

Many Clementon area residents will fondly remember when this building was Pete’s Cigars; selling cigars, candy and ice cream… for MANY decades in the mid-1900s.

My thanks to two readers who pointed out the new signage to me. I had seen work taking place in the building a few months ago but had no idea what until I was told the signage was going up!

92 Chicken – What is Korean Style Chicken?

According to the 92 Chicken website they have 7 open locations and 8 more coming soon, including one planned for Philadelphia.

Interestingly, they are all literally scattered all over the United States… North, East, South and West USA (as opposed to starting in one area and building out from there)

Their first Facebook post is dated November 2021 less than a year ago, so it’s very impressive they’ve been moving fast on locations in such a short time.

In South Korea this style of chicken is very popular with over 20,000 fried chicken locations generating over $3 billion in sales, and possibly becoming more popular than Korean BBQ.

And while Korean chicken can be found in the US, it seems it’s just making its way out of the more culturally diverse big cities and into suburban communities.

Korean Chicken? What makes it different?

In the US our chicken is put in a brine and then dredged in flour and buttermilk. It makes for a thicker coating on crispy breading.

Korean chicken is more light and even crispier with a thinner almost paper-like skin that is not heavily battered.

Simply American Southern “buttermilk” Fried Chicken will be a larger piece as it has a thicker breading crust, and typically more seasoning. The same piece of Korean chicken should be noticeably thinner.

Also in Southern style chicken once it’s breaded and cooked, it’s ready to eat. No one really puts sauces on it.

Korean style chicken on the other hand is meant to be served with a sauce coating.

So maybe we could say Korean chicken is a little closer to a wing preparation… thinner coating and a variety of sauces?

That all being said, the 92 Chicken online menu breaks it down into three categories

The online menu features over 25 different variations as well as a few non-chicken options!

In the chicken category there are choices like; Sweet Onion, Soy Garlic Spring Onion, Garlic Spicy, Curry Sweet Onion, Honey Garlic, and more

So to be very clear I am giving my researched definition of Korean fried chicken and have not had 92 Chicken’s version. Trust me I’ll be one of the first in line when they open to give them a try!

92 Chicken also offers Fried Calamari, Jumbo Shrimp, Popcorn Shrimp, Shrimp Tempura and Fish & Chips!

When ordering you can specify the piece of chicken you want and they break out the menu for each style and 5 different “pieces” ranging from wings to a whole chicken!
