I first saw the news of the upcoming closing in a Clementon social media page where the poster shared an unofficial reason told to them by employees “rent was too high”. This reason is unconfirmed.
I stopped over yesterday morning to find a sign announcing the closing is posted on the front glass door of the CVS, listing the closing date as well as the address of the Stratford CVS. Additionally, immediately inside the doorway of the Clementon CVS is another (larger) sign announcing the upcoming closing.
Several days later Clementon Councilwoman Gwen Cantwell shared commentary from CVS which was in response to an inquiry from the Clementon mayor on the store closing.
As mostly expected, the CVS response takes a “Corporate Tone” regarding the closing, simply calling out basic factors such as local market dynamics, population shifts, community store density and other factors… without any real specifics.
There is a reduction in stores taking place in the American Retail Pharmacy space, most noticeably with Rite Aid. That being said Walgreens and CVS are always looking to reduce underperforming stores. Earlier this year CVS closed a pharmacy location in Washington Township.
CVS first opened across the street from its current location, as one of the original tenants in the Clementon Lake Village shopping center which opened around 1990.
Growth of the retail pharmacy industry in this era, particularly with the movement towards drive-thru prescription pickups… quickly led to CVS looking to develop a larger freestanding store across the street.
The current Clementon CVS store opened in the early 2000s. I found a Planning Board notice from November 2001 related to the construction of the building.
There are no known plans for the building at this time.

All prescriptions will be transferred to the CVS Pharmacy at 69 South White Horse Pike in Stratford to ensure patients have uninterrupted access to pharmacy care. Patients can always choose to fill their prescriptions at any CVS Pharmacy, or the pharmacy of their choice, if another is more convenient. Employees are being offered comparable roles within the company.Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions.
