What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Birmingham, NJ?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Satterfield's Restaurant or visit Chamberlain Square, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Birmingham, NJ, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NJ's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Birmingham, NJ understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Birmingham, NJ

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Birmingham, NJ

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Regency Retirement Village of Birmingham
  • Brookdale University Park
  • Danberry at Inverness
  • Fair Haven
  • The Brook
  • Somerby St. Vincent's One Nineteen
Home Care Birmingham, NJ

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Some seniors are more proactive about transitioning to independent living. Others choose to remain home until their care needs or other requirements are satisfied. (SUMMIT, NJ) -- The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (VACNJ) announced that Mary Birmingham will be stepping down from her position as curator, effective March 5, 2022, to pursue work as an independent curator.

“I am honored to have served as VACNJ’s first staff curator and I am grateful for the trust that Executive Director Melanie Cohn and the Board of Trustees placed in me in directing the Art Center’s curatorial program,” said Birmingham. “Their encouragement and support enabled me to present a wide variety of artists and artworks, showcasing some of the best and most compelling art of our time.

“I have always placed artists at the center of my practice; they inspire everything I do as a curator of contemporary art. Over the years, I have explored a variety of ideas and themes and have been privileged to work with artists across a broad spectrum, reflecting different aesthetic outlooks and lived experiences.”

Since being hired as VACNJ’s first staff curator in 2010, Birmingham has directed an ambitious program of contemporary art exhibitions and related events. She began her career as a cataloguer at the Whitney Museum and, after taking time off to raise her three children, she returned to her career and worked as a curatorial assistant at the Montclair Art Museum from 1993–2003 and the Director of Exhibitions at the Hunterdon Art Museum from 2007–2010. Birmingham has an MA in Art History from Hunter College and a BA in Art History from Seton Hall University. She is the author of Dynamic Impulse: The Drawings of Stuart Davis and numerous exhibition catalogues. Over the course of her career, she has organized more than 100 exhibitions—including more than 80 shows and projects at the Art Center—and has written and lectured on a variety of topics in American and contemporary art.

“I am grateful to have collaborated with so many amazing artists whose work has enriched and even improved our world. It has been my honor to share their work with our audiences through exhibitions that created new contexts for meaningful conversations about art,” Birmingham reflected. “I treasure all these experiences and relationships and take them with me as I move on to the next stage of my career.”

“As our first staff curator, Mary has tirelessly led the Art Center’s museum program for more than 11 years,” said VACNJ Executive Director Melanie Cohn. “The exhibitions she has organized have combined strong curatorial vision with fresh artistic voices. The Art Center is a better place because of Mary, and she will be greatly missed.”

VACNJ’s search for a new curator will begin on Monday, January 31, 2022.

For more than 85 years, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has been exclusively dedicated to viewing, making, and learning about contemporary art. Recognized as a leading non-profit arts organization, the Art Center’s renowned Studio School, acclaimed exhibitions, and educational outreach initiatives serve thousands of youths, families, seniors, and people with special needs every year.

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is located at 68 Elm Street in Summit, NJ. Gallery hours: Monday– Thursday, 10:00am–8:00pm; Friday & Saturday, 10:00am–5:00pm; and Sunday, 11:00am–4:00pm. Please call 908.273.9121 to confirm holiday hours.

The USFL's opener delivered plenty of fireworks

The USFL's first game had just about everything, including a game-winning touchdown in the final minute. The score, courtesy of Stallions quarterback J'Mar Smith, gave the Birmingham Stallions a 28-24, come-from-behind win over the New Jersey Generals.

The two teams combined to score 24 points in the fourth quarter, with Smith's score coming on a 2-yard touchdown run with 29 seconds left. Smith's touchdown came moments after the Generals took the lead on Nick Rose's 47-yard field goal with 1:54 left. Smith then led the Stallions on a game-winning, 59-yard drive while recording the first win of the USFL's 2022 season. The Generals lost despite gaining a jaw-dropping 222 rushing yards that included 98 yards and a score from quarterback De'Andre Johnson.

Saturday's game started with a bang, with Generals quarterback Luis Perez hitting Randy Satterfield for a 48-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage. The drive ended with Satterfield catching a 3-yard touchdown despite taking a nasty lick from a Stallions defender.

The Stallions responded with a big play of their own, a 35-yard touchdown pass from Alex McGough to Osirus Mitchell less than four minutes into the game. New Jersey re-gained the lead by taking advantage of safety Shalom Luani's interception at the start of the second quarter. Facing a third-and-7 from the Stallions' 13-yard-line, Perez rolled to his right before hitting tight end Braedon Bowman in the end zone for the go-ahead score.

With the score tied through three quarters, both teams scored touchdowns to start the fourth quarter. Johnson gave the Generals the lead on a 10-yard run, only to have the Stallions respond less than four minutes later when Smith found tight end Cary Angeline for a 28-yard score. Rose then gave the Generals a 24-21 lead before Smith executed a game-winning two-minute drill.

Here's a full breakdown of what happened Saturday night in Birmingham.

Why the Stallions won

Birmingham's offense scored touchdowns on its last three possessions. Most of the damage was done by Smith, who started in the second half in place of McGough, who was sidelined with an injury. After going 0 of 4 in the first half, Smith completed 11 of 17 passes for 156 yards in the second half. The Stallions also received a big game from Mitchell, who finished the game with 96 yards on five receptions.

Birmingham's defense also came up with a few timely stops. The Generals were threatening to add to their lead before halftime when linebacker Scooby Wright forced a fumble of Perez that was scooped up by safety Nate Holley. With the game tied late in the fourth quarter, the Stallions' defense forced the Generals to settle for a field goal after JoJo Tillery tackled Johnson two yards shy of the first down on third-and-10. Birmingham's defense then forced three incomplete passes on the game's final three plays.

Why the Generals lost

Two missed field goals certainly didn't help the Generals, who led for most of the game. Rose missed a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the first half. He then missed a 23-yard field goal to start the second half.

Rose rewarded coach Mike Riley's faith in him when he made his third attempt with under two minutes left. That being said, Riley may be second-guessing his decision not to go for it in that situation given how much success his offense was having running the football. There was also the surprising disappearing act from Perez, who attempted just three passes in the second half after going 12-of-16 for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

New Jersey's defense, which played lights out in the first half, simply had no answer for Smith, who led Birmingham's offense on scoring drives of 80, 67 and 59 yards in the second half.

The Generals were in control of the game after forcing a Stallions punt to start the second half. New Jersey then drove 75 yards and were in position to add to their lead before Rose missed his second field goal in as many drives. The Stallions' offense seemed to wake up after that, as Birmingham put together a nine-play, 80-yard drive that was punctuated by CJ Marable's 3-yard, game-tying touchdown run. Consecutive completions from Smith to Mitchell for a combined 44 yards set up the score.

Satterfield's catch deserves mention, but the play of the game belongs to Smith, who capped off his big second half by scoring the game-winning touchdown.

The Generals will face the Michigan Panthers next Saturday night. The Stallions will take on the Houston Gamblers next Sunday night.

This Sunday will feature a triple-header of USFL action that starts with the Panthers facing the Gamblers at noon. The New Orleans Breakers will take on the Stars at 4 p.m., while the USFL's opening weekend will commence with a prime time matchup in between the Tampa Bay Bandits and Pittsburgh Maulers.

The original USFL made a huge splash with big free-agent signings and up-tempo play in 1983, but the league folded after the 1985 season after a failed bid to force a merger with the NFL. Now, eight teams named for original USFL franchises will take part in a 10-game season in Birmingham, Ala., before a postseason that is set to be played at Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Caesars Sportsbook lists Birmingham as a three-point favorite in its latest Generals vs. Stallions odds, and the over-under for total points is set at 41. Before making any Stallions vs. Generals picks or 2022 USFL predictions, be sure you check out what SportsLine football expert R.J. White has to say.

White is CBS Sports' Fantasy and gambling editor and is SportsLine's No. 1 NFL expert in against-the-spread picks. White went 445-378-24 on ATS picks on the NFL from 2017-21, returning $2,542 to $100 players. It's no surprise, as White has cashed huge twice in the world's most prestigious football handicapping competition, the Las Vegas SuperContest.

His many years of experience in analyzing statistics and trends allowed him to crush his picks in the last major spring pro football league. He hit 16 of his 20 spread picks on the XFL in 2020 before the pandemic forced the league to shut down. Anyone who has followed White's picks has cashed in huge.

Now, White has set his sights on Generals vs. Stallions, and he just revealed his expert picks and USFL predictions. You can head to SportsLine now to see his picks. Now, here are several USFL odds and betting lines for Stallions vs. Generals:

In reality, every game is a home game for Birmingham, as long as crowds show up. All 10 games will be at Protective Stadium or Legion Field, so the Stallions should get backing if the league draws attention. Coach Skip Holtz has a pair of solid signal-callers and could use both, with top QB pick Alex McGough possessing a strong, accurate arm and J'Mar Smith providing a bit more mobility. McGough was drafted by the Seahawks in the seventh round out of FIU in 2018, and Smith was the 2019 C-USA Player of the Year under Holtz at Louisiana Tech.

The QBs should have some solid targets, led by Victor Bolden, who made the 49ers an undrafted free agent in 2017. Emmanuel Hall was an All-SEC player with Missouri in 2018, and tight end Sage Surratt was all-ACC for Wake Forest. RBs Tony Brooks-James and C.J. Marable are among the many players who have hung around the pro fringes. The defense's strength is a secondary led by Brian Allen and Josh Shaw, and linebacker Scooby Wright should be a leader for the team. He won the Nagurski Award as a sophomore with the Arizona Wildcats in 2014.

New Jersey, led by former San Diego Chargers and Nebraska coach Mike Riley, took a big hit when No. 1 QB Ben Holmes was released after being injured. But minor-league star Luis Perez will join talented De'Andre Johnson as the signal-callers. The running game should be the strength of the offense regardless. Former Ohio State back Mike Weber and experienced former Texas A&M runner Trey Williams are joined by Darius Victor, who was fifth in the league in rushing yardage during the short-lived XFL.

They should find some holes behind an experienced line led by LT Terry Poole, a former fourth-round pick of the Seahawks who has seven years of pro ball under his belt. The receiving corps has a lot of size to overmatch the Stallions secondary, including 6-foot-5 tight end Nick Truesdell. Wideouts J'Mon Moore and Darrius Sheppard both have had brief stints with the Green Bay Packers. The New Jersey defense lacks experience, except in the secondary, where De'Vante Bausby and Shalom Luani have combined for 57 games on NFL game-day rosters.

White has broken down the rosters and scrutinized this matchup from every angle, and he is leaning under on the point total. He also has a strong spread pick and even predicts an exact final score. He's only sharing that Generals vs. Stallions pick, and the rest of his expert USFL analysis, at SportsLine.
