MOORESTOWN, NJ — The snow has made its way to Moorestown, adding some challenges to the Tuesday morning commute. Forecasters expect several inches of snowfall and gusts up to 35 mph before the winter storm tapers off in the afternoon.

Flooding is also possible near the Delaware River.

Much of South Jersey, including Moorestown, is under a winter weather advisory until 3 p.m. Tuesday. The advisory, issued Monday evening, anticipated 2 to 5 inches of snow accumulating and gusts up to 45 mph.

"Briefly heavy snow will be possible around the time of the morning commute," the advisory says. "There is uncertainty regarding snow amounts and how efficiently the snow will accumulate on roads, given mild temperatures with precipitation starting as rain overnight."

On late Tuesday morning, the NWS expected 1 to 3 more inches of snowfall in northwestern Burlington County. (View the full forecast below).

The overnight rain shifted to wet snow Tuesday morning. There's a chance of rain and a slight chance of snow in the afternoon before the precipitation tapers off, according to the NWS.

Unlike the portions of the state receiving heavier snowfall, Moorestown has a full day of school Tuesday. Burlington County government buildings delayed their openings until 10 a.m.

Afternoon temperatures rising into the 40s will make post-storm cleanup more manageable, according to South Jersey officials. But drivers should still use caution, according to Camden County Commissioner Al Dyer.

"If you are traveling on the roadways today, please do so cautiously as there is always the possibility for slick spots," said Dyer, liaison to the county's Department of Public Works. "As our crews head out to treat the roads, remember to always leave at least six car lengths behind our vehicles while they work and move any cars off the street and into a driveway."

Northwestern Burlington County is also under a coastal flood advisory, with minor coastal flooding predicted during high tides through Wednesday morning. But on Tuesday afternoon, the winter storm could exacerbate the issue and bring moderate coastal-flooding impacts to some areas along the tidal Delaware River.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — Rite Aid's bankruptcy will hit home for Moorestown as the pharmaceutical-retail giant plans to shutter its store in the township.

The Moorestown store (121 W Main St.) will close Dec. 14, a Rite Aid spokesperson told Patch.

When Rite Aid prepares to close a store, the company typically works to transfer prescriptions to another Rite Aid or nearby pharmacy in order to prevent service interruptions. The corporation also attempts to transfer employees to different locations.

Rite Aid filed Oct. 15 for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection amid financial losses and legal woes involving its alleged role in the opioid crisis. Before the filing, Rite Aid's plans called for closing up to 500 underperforming stores, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The retailer runs about 2,000 stores.

More than a dozen locations in New Jersey have closed in recent months or will close soon.

A Rite Aid spokesperson gave Patch the following blanket statement:

"Rite Aid regularly assesses its retail footprint to ensure we are operating efficiently while meeting the needs of our customers, communities, associates and overall business. In connection with the court-supervised process, we notified the Court of certain underperforming stores we are closing to further reduce rent expense and strengthen overall financial performance. At this time, we have not made or confirmed any decisions on additional specific store closures as part of our financial restructuring process."

Rite Aid's bankruptcy comes amid slumping sales and heavy debt from an opioid lawsuit filed by the Justice Department in March that accuses the company of filling prescriptions for large quantities of opioids "that had obvious, and often multiple, red flags indicating misuse."

Other drugstore chains, including rivals CVS and Walgreens, have settled similar lawsuits, but were better positioned financially. Those companies, however, are struggling and closing in a tough environment for national drug store chains as Amazon and big-box retailers like Walmart, Target, Costco and others make it more convenient to have prescriptions filled, CNN reported.

In recent months, Rite Aid has closed or announced plans to shutter several South Jersey locations, including the following:

The Moorestown Improvement Association (MIA) will hold its annual meeting on Thursday evening, March 14th, beginning at 7:00 pm at the at the Community House of Moorestown, 16 East Main Street. The gathering is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. The evening’s program will focus on the restoration, beautification, and ongoing maintenance of Remembrance Park, a jewel in the center of Moorestown.

Remembrance Park is the triangle of land at Camden Avenue and West Second Street. It was purchased and landscaped for the purpose of a park in 1909 by the MIA. In 1918, the property was gifted to the township to remain a park, and was dedicated to the memory of seven Moorestown residents who gave their lives in World War I. An oak tree was planted and a stone monument was placed there.

More recently, Perkins Center for the Arts collaborated with Katherine Hackl under an “Artists in Communities” grant to bring stunning new beauty to this “pocket park”. Katherine worked with more than sixty community members of all ages to create unique tiles depicting indigenous plants and animals of the Moorestown area. These gorgeous tile/mosaic works were installed on custom-made concrete benches and planters that were added to Remembrance Park. (See photos at https://www.katherinehackl.com/remembrance-park.php.)

Under the leadership of Holly Myers, community members have begun an ongoing effort to refurbish the park. In the spring and fall of 2023, MIA trustees, the American Legion Post 42, Boy Scouts Troop 44. and other Moorestown citizens joined in to clean out beds, rake leaves, and mulch the site. At the March 14^th program, attendees will learn from guest speakers and visual presentations how they can support the continued restoration of Remembrance Park, leading to its rededication ceremony later in 2024. Any individuals who have been involved in creating the art, sculpture, and landscaping at the park are especially welcome to come and share their experiences!

Founded in 1904, the Moorestown Improvement Association is the town's oldest civic organization, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the community. Its members strive to advance the common good through personal commitment, active participation, and financial support. Activities focus on historic preservation, heritage appreciation, perpetuation of the tree-planting tradition, and environmental concerns. MIA has been using its annual public meeting to showcase and promote the work of various local non-profit organizations and institutions that contribute to the quality of life and rich diversity of Moorestown. In recent years, programs have focused on the work of the Perkins Center for the Arts, Majoda Stables, the Moorestown First Aid & Emergency Squad, and the Strawbridge Lake Beautification Committee, among others.

King's Road Brewing will run the state's first 'education-based' brewery, partnering with the Community House and Rowan College.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — A brewer, some college administrators and board members of a historic nonprofit walked into the Community House of Moorestown. They formed a partnership to develop the first microbrewery of its kind in New Jersey.

An "education-based" microbrewery is coming to the Community House — a historic venue on Main Street that operates as an independent community center. King's Road Brewing Company will manage Community House Brewery and partner with Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC) to provide students with hands-on industry experience.

The future brewery still needs to reach fundraising goals for the endeavor and then receive approval from the Town Council and the state's Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. But organizers project it will open in late 2025 or early 2026.

In 2017, King's Road opened its first brewery in Haddonfield. The company opened another location in Medford four years later.

"Through our commitment to quality craft beer and community involvement, we’ve become a catalyst for positive economic and social change in Haddonfield," said Bob Hochgertel, co-owner of King's Road. "We believe the same can be true in Moorestown, and Main Street in Moorestown is a physical continuation of the historic ‘King’s Road’ from where the brewery takes its name."

Established in 1926, the Community House has been a hub for community activity and both public and private events. The nonprofit intends to minimize disruptions of other events as the microbrewery develops.

Moorestown had long been a dry town, restricting liquor sales for more than 70 years after Prohibition ended in the 1930s. But in 2011, Moorestown voters approved the sale of liquor licenses in certain areas of the township.

Ten years later, the Town Council approved an ordinance to permit breweries, distilleries and winery salerooms in the township.

Several New Jersey micobreweries have closed in recent months, with many citing state restrictions that went into effect in 2022. As a result, breweries could only hold up to 25 on-site events and 52 private parties per year. And patrons were required to tour a brewery before consuming its beer.

Gov. Phil Murphy, who faced significant criticism for allowing the restrictions to stay in place for more than a year, signed a law in January that rescinded those policies.

Recent closures include Flying Fish Brewing Co. — South Jersey's first microbrewery, which declared bankruptcy last December and closed its Somerdale facility earlier this month. The Hash House A Go Go restaurant in the Moorestown Mall announced earlier today that they had closed the Burlington County location, effective immediately.

The announcement was made on their location’s Facebook page, just two days after the Christmas holiday. It appears the newer location in Atlantic City at the Tropicana is unaffected by this decision and remains open.

It seems many knew this was coming as a commenter at the 42Freeway Facebook says they dined at Hash House in Mid-December and their water told them of the closing.

The announcement was a simple message stating:

We have made the difficult decision to close Hash House at the Moorestown Mall, effective immediately. A huge thank you to our loyal guest and great staff through the years, so much appreciated

The Moorestown location of Hash House was on the Rt 38 side of the mall with an main exterior entrance to the parking lot. They were positioned between Harvest Seasonal Grill and Joe Italiano’s Maplewood.

While this news came as a shock to most, commenters at the popular South Jersey Food Scene Facebook Group heard about the news before the holidays, likely from employees who maybe were given some advanced notice on the closure. (Facebook Post)

Hash House A Go Go is a West Coast operated chain which traces its roots to the founder’s life growing up in Indiana’s Amish country.

The menu featured breakfast and brunch offerings, which were available all day.

Mos items had a unique twist to it which they called “twisted farm fresh“. They describe the menu concept as “where old school meats new and gets twisted”

One of their signature dishes was the Sage Fried Chicken and Bacon Stuffed Waffles, which are stacked up high on the plate… like a tower of deliciousness!

Another over the top breakfast item was The Griddled French Toast dipped in Banana Cinnamon Cream with Candied Pecan & Grilled Banana

The restaurant was also known for its large portions.. plates overflowing with food!

No other details on the closing of the Moorestown Hash House A Go Go location is available from their Corporate at this time, or PREIT who owns the Moorestown Mall.

That being said one would have to assume that impacts of the COVID pandemic shutdowns in New Jersey had to have played a factor.

Hash House A Go Go Moorestown closed for an extended time, and did not reopen until February of 2022.

An interesting twist on that reopening is, when they had their initial Grand Opening of the Moorestown restaurant, it supported a full liquor license and bar.

But when they finally reopened the location after the pandemic, they decided not to keep the liquor license.

In a response to a customer’s question on Facebook back in 2022, a representative stated that alcohol was less than 10% of the sales volume in Moorestown, and with the high price of the liquor license (in Moorestown) being over $1 million… Hash House A Go Go could not justify keeping it.

So for the last 22 months the Moorestown Hash House A Go Go has been offering their signature huge portions of delicious twisted food… without their cocktail offerings, which featured “Johnny’s Famous BLT Bloody Mary”

At this point it is not known what is to become of the space, which initially started out as a Jose Garces Distrito location.

Last month Moorestown Mall owner PREIT had their quarterly earnings call, and at that time thet did not mention any changes to the Moorestown Mall’s restaurant landscape.

Just two weeks ago it was reported that PREIT was filing for bankruptcy protection for the second time, looking to cut $880 Million in debt. This likely had no impact on Hash House A G Go’s decision to close at Moorestown, but more so calls out a potential tenant loss for PREIT.

Cooper Hospital recently completed a massive remodeling project to convert the former Sears Department Store at the Mall into a new Moorestown Medical Campus. A large residential development is also under construction in the parking lot.
