SAYREVILLE, NJ – For years, Sayreville residents have asked, ‘Will I ever see it?’ The answer is yes, most likely this fall.
Before then,TAPinto Raritan Bay was invited for a sneak peek inside the outdoor retailing giant's newest store, which held the first of two hiring events at Riverton on Tuesday.
With construction entering its final stages, Bass Pro Shops' massive new Sayreville store is beginning to reveal what shoppers can expect when the doors open this fall: a one-of-a-kind outdoor retail destination featuring boats, a 70,000-gallon aquarium, hand-painted New Jersey wildlife murals, and more than 300 employees ready to welcome customers.
Leading the effort is General Manager Alex Rusanov, a 25-year Bass Pro Shops veteran who says the store will offer much more than a traditional retail experience.
"We're hiring over 300 people for this location," Rusanov said as we walked through the nearly completed store. "The biggest thing for us is we want to hire those that are passionate about the outdoors and want to share the outdoors. Whether it's camping, hunting, fishing, marine and boating, or apparel, if they love the outdoors, we them want to join our team."
Located along the Raritan River at the Riverton development, the Sayreville store occupies more than 200,000 square feet and will become the largest one-story Bass Pro Shops location in the company's portfolio, according to Rusanov.
A Riverfront DestinationRiverton's location along the Raritan River is one of the defining features of the new store.
"It's very rare to get a location like this that's next to a highway and a river or a big body of water," said Rusanov, who was born in Ukraine and lived much of his life in Florida. "This is a great location for this store."
The proximity to the river makes the store a natural fit for Bass Pro Shops' extensive boating business. Customers will find a large showroom featuring factory-direct brands including Ranger, Tracker, Tahoe, Mako, Nitro, and Hatteras yachts, along with financing options.
The store will also feature a full-service marine department capable of maintaining both Bass Pro boats and other brands, offering services ranging from routine maintenance to winterization.
Built Around New JerseyUnlike traditional chain retailers, every Bass Pro Shops location is uniquely designed to reflect its surrounding community.
"All the art scenes and design in every Bass Pro Shops is based on the local community," explained Rusanov, who has worked with the company for 25 years. "Every Bass Pro Shop is 100% different design. Here, pretty much all the paintings are going to represent New Jersey and the wildlife here."
Visitors will see hand-painted murals depicting New Jersey marshes and wildlife, handcrafted chandeliers and fixtures created by Bass Pro's in-house artisans, and elaborate nature-themed displays throughout the building. Teams of Bass Pro artists travel from store to store creating the custom artwork for each location.
One of the biggest attractions will be a 70,000-gallon aquarium that will serve as the centerpiece of the store. The aquarium will feature fish native to the region, along with stingrays and jellyfish cared for by an onsite aquatics team.
More Than ShoppingBeyond retail, Rusanov said the store is designed to become a community destination. Schools are encouraged to visit, and if the store opens as planned this fall, families can expect Bass Pro Shops' popular Santa's Wonderland during the holiday season, complete with free photos with Santa and children's activities.
Rusanov also highlighted the company's longstanding commitment to conservation.
"Sometimes as much as 10% of the earnings go back to nature conservation," he said, noting Bass Pro founder Johnny Morris' dedication to protecting outdoor resources.
Preparing for Opening DayMore than 200 employees have already been hired and completed their orientation, with a second hiring phase now underway. New team members have begun preparing the store for opening by assembling fixtures and stocking merchandise as truckloads of inventory arrive.
While an official grand opening date has not yet been announced, Rusanov said Bass Pro Shops remains on track for a fall debut, pending final construction and permitting.
"You just never know with construction and permitting, but we should be ready for a fall opening," he said.

SAYREVILLE, NJ — When will the Bass Pro Shop in Sayreville open?
It's looking more and more like October, according to news site the Sayreville Insider. Other websites report a late September or early October opening.
"You're gonna blink and the store's gonna be open," the store's general manager told News 12 in this sneak peek video tour of the store this summer while it's still under construction.
Sayreville Insider attended the August meeting of the Sayreville Economic & Redevelopment Agency (SERA), and at that meeting, a SERA engineer reported that the store is working towards an October opening.
A spokeswoman for Bass Pro Shop would not confirm the October opening date, only saying they are anticipating to open sometime this fall.
The store will be located at Riverton, the 400-acre town home community planned to be built at the mouth of Raritan Bay. In addition to condos, Riverton will have a boat marina, walking trails along the Raritan River and an outdoor plaza. A QuickChek and Starbucks plan to open at Riverton. Sayreville town hall will relocate there, too.
The Bass Pro Shop is the first part of Riverton that will open and it will be an anchor of the development.
The 200,000-square-foot Sayreville store will be the largest single-level Bass Pro Shop in the country. The only other Bass Pro Shop in New Jersey is in Atlantic City.
The store will be really neat inside: It will have a 65,000-gallon indoor aquarium and a 12,000-gallon touch pool with sting rays, which children will be able to touch. There will be a hunting section, a firearms section and the store will sell boats. The store will have an archery range.
Bass Pro Shops said they've designed their Sayreville store to welcome kids and will have hands-on learning opportunities for kids and teens.
Riverton will take up 418 acres of what is currently marshland. The developer of Riverton is Cincinnati-based North American Properties, working with PGIM Real Estate, the global investment arm of Prudential bank.
The developer previously said Riverton could not be built without "critical" financing from the state.
That's why it was such big news when, in 2023, the state of New Jersey announced Riverton was approved for tax breaks of up to 50 percent of project's costs, up to $400 million total. It was given the tax breaks under the state's Aspire Program, which is meant to increase affordable housing in New Jersey.
A big chunk (20 percent) of the 1,300 condos planned there will be affordable housing.

According to a report from Patch, project leaders now believe Bass Pro Shops Sayreville could open by the end of September, with early October as a backup if a bit more time is needed.
The update came out of a recent meeting of the Sayreville Economic and Redevelopment Agency (SERA), where Riverton development lead Mark Fetta said his confidence in that timeline has jumped considerably since the agency's last meeting. "My confidence level... was probably about 65% at that point. I'm up to about 80, 85," he said, adding that the project has now entered a "20-step program of extremely diligent and detailed inspections" covering both the store itself and the surrounding public infrastructure.
SERA Chairman John Zebrowski raised a different question worth watching too: how many of the roughly 300 new jobs at the store will actually go to Sayreville residents. "That's important to SERA and to the town," he said.
So mark it down, tentatively: late September into early October. We'll believe it fully once the doors are actually open, but this is the clearest timeline this project has had in months.
UPDATE — July 23, 2026: In a summer full of hard layoff headlines out of New Jersey, here is a different kind of jobs story.
Bass Pro Shops is hiring again for its still-under-construction Sayreville location, and this time applicants get to do it inside the actual store. The retailer will hold a two-day, in-person hiring event on-site on Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. — a shift from June's event, which was held off-site at the Sheraton Edison. Getting the hiring event onto the actual store floor, months before opening, is a good sign the build-out is entering its final stretch.
Bass Pro is still hiring full-time and part-time positions across all departments, aiming for 300 total jobs at the Sayreville location. Interested applicants should apply online in advance at basspro.com/careers, selecting the Sayreville location, then attend the hiring event for on-site interviews.
Still no exact opening date beyond "fall 2026." But between the on-site hiring push and the pace of construction, that window is getting shorter. We will keep watching.
UPDATE — June 21, 2026: The wait finally has an answer, sort of. Bass Pro Shops confirmed this week that the Sayreville store is targeting a fall 2026 opening, and the company released a wave of new details about what is actually going to be inside when the doors open.
This is going to be big. At 200,000 square feet, the Sayreville location will be the largest single-level Bass Pro Shops in the United States. The centerpiece is an aquarium experience unlike anything else in the state: a 65,000-gallon Shipwreck Aquarium paired with a 12,000-gallon ray touch pool, live jellyfish, and an interactive Sketch Aquarium designed for kids. This is not a typical sporting goods store layout. The aquarium is designed to transport kids of all ages into an underwater world while highlighting the importance of conservation, according to the company.
The store will carry the boat brands Bass Pro is known for nationally. Industry-leading boat brands including Tracker, Ranger, Nitro, Sun Tracker, Regency, Ascend, Tahoe, Triton, Mako and Hatteras will be on the floor, along with the Tracker Off Road lineup of ATVs and side-by-sides.
The store is also hiring, and hiring big. Bass Pro expects to bring on more than 300 employees for the Sayreville location, with a hiring event scheduled at the Sheraton Edison on Wednesday, June 24, and Thursday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you have been looking for a reason to get into outdoor retail, this is it.
As for the exact opening date, Bass Pro is still only saying fall. No specific month, no firm date. The store will anchor the Riverton complex, the 400-acre development going up along the Raritan River and Raritan Bay at the Sayreville exit off the Garden State Parkway, visible to anyone crossing the Driscoll Bridge. A QuickChek and Starbucks are also planned for the site, and Sayreville's town hall may eventually relocate there as well.

UPDATE — May 16, 2026: Bass Pro Shops Sayreville was slated to open in Spring 2026, and as of this update, the exterior of the building is complete and visible to commuters passing the Riverton development off the Garden State Parkway near the Driscoll Bridge. However, no official grand opening date has been announced. Spring is running out — we will update this page the moment a date is confirmed.

Central Jersey is finally getting its first Bass Pro Shops — a major destination for everything from fishing rods to hiking boots and more. The new store is going up off the Garden State Parkway in Sayreville’s Riverton development and is set to open this spring, giving outdoor lovers a closer place to gear up without a long drive.
For a long time, the only Bass Pro Shops in the state has been in Atlantic City, and before this, most of us willing to make a serious outdoor gear run would head to Cabela’s in Hamburg, PA. That trip always felt like an event — not just a quick stop for a new jacket or pair of hiking boots, but a whole experience with all the sights, sounds, and gear that make getting outdoors fun.
And that’s exactly the vibe Bass Pro delivers. These stores are more than retail outlets; they’re immersive outdoor destinations. Walk in, and you’ll find huge selections of gear for fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, backpacking, boating, and more — from rods, reels, lures, and tackle to boots, weatherproof jackets, and footwear for every season. Many Bass Pro Shops also offer boats, marine accessories, outdoor cooking equipment, packs and backpacks, and even home or cabin décor inspired by nature.
But it’s not just products. Bass Pro stores are known for bringing the outdoors indoors with displays like massive aquariums, wildlife mounts, and themed murals that celebrate local outdoor life. That’s why I’m so pleased to see this store coming closer to Central New Jersey. I love the outdoors — hiking in particular — and our family spends a ton of time in nature. Even though I wouldn’t call myself an active hunter these days, I’ve done my fair share over the years. Lately, fishing with my son and daughter has become something I’m really excited about trying together this spring. There’s nothing quite like sharing a hobby with your kids and being out in nature as a family.
We already have our cabin up in Sullivan County, PA, and one of our favorite spots to hit is Worlds End State Park, where hiking trails and scenic views never get old. And while we’ve always made the trek out to Hamburg for that classic Cabela’s outdoors trip, having Bass Pro Shops in Sayreville means that when we need gear — whether it’s hiking boots, a cold-weather camo suit, or some fishing tackle — we have a great new option!
So as spring rolls in, I’m not just looking forward to casting a line with the kids — I’m looking forward to walking through those doors and seeing what new gear and inspiration await right here in Central Jersey.
