A “Roundabout” is a circle…. if you’ve utilized the Route 42 Exits at the Gloucester Premium Outlets and Camden County College, you’ve driven similar roundabouts.
In its current configuration the roadways create a very challenging intersection for commuters with the two popular roadways forming at a sharp point, which then leads into a sharp bend heading towards Cedarbrook Road… which has limited visibility from the trees.
According to Camden County, the roundabout is expected to reduce the number of conflict points with turning vehicles and provide a speed reduction through the roadway realignment. It will be positioned in the center of the already open area which should also improve visibility.
The County states the roundabout will calm traffic, while maintaining flow and eliminate the possibility of intersection crossover crashes.
The project will also include pedestrian accessibility by installing sidewalks, crosswalks and refuge islands.
The proposed Camden County trail system is also planned for a later date in the wooded area adjacent to the intersection, and the sidewalks will accommodate a pedestrian connecting point to that future trail.
Winslow Township Roundabout – The Plan
In determining the best plan of action for the project, the County reviewed several alternatives choosing one which was least impactful to the homes and environmental features of the area… while providing the safest roadway for drivers.
The location for the roundabout will be positioned where the current water retention basin is located (in front of the Wawa parking lot)
The three roads entering into the roundabout will be slightly reconfigured where they access the circle, to provide better traffic flow and visibility.
With the roundabout positioned in the center (and further away from the homes), those residents still need a way to access their own driveways… so a new resident-only extended driveway will be created in front of the homes so that they can safely drive in and out.
To support the Roundabout construction, the project will require the demolition of the former Wawa convenience store building, repositioning of water retention basins, and developing a new side access road for several homes located in the immediate area.
In an update provided to 42Freeway, Camden County says the same contractor who is working on the Malaga road bridge project for Gloucester County will be doing the roundabout work also.
That Malaga bridge project has just a few more weeks until it’s completed, and When that is completed the work will begin on the Winslow roundabout.
Tentatively the County expects to start the demo of the former Wawa building later this month. During this initial start of the project (demo), a portion of Erial Road may be closed and detoured.
Once that is completed, South Jersey Gas will be on site to relocate a gas main that runs through the area. For this aspect of the project there may be segments of closure/detours on Erial and Sicklerville Roads.
After the gas main work is completed there will likely be some project downtime of about 2 months as overhead utility companies work to relocated their wires.
At different points in the project construction there could be closures/detours in the area.
Based on the 2023 Public Information Center meeting, the project is expected to take 1 year to complete.
