CORDOVA, Tenn. (WMC) - A Cordova daycare under investigation in the death of a 6-year-old child who was left in a hot daycare bus has permanently closed, according to the Tennessee Department of Human Services.
Human services officials reported that Kid University, on Walnut Knoll Lane, surrendered its license and permanently closed effective Friday.
The Tennessee Department of Human Services performed a “Fatality Visit” at the daycare Friday morning to check for policy and procedure violations after Winter Jones’ death the day before.
The inspection report states that Kid University was found noncompliant with multiple transportation policies.
The closure came after an ongoing investigation into Jones being left on a daycare van in the summer heat for hours, according to her family.
MPD reported that officers responded to an ambulance call Thursday afternoon. They observed a child “in need of medical assistance.”
Winter’s family said she was taken to the emergency room at Baptist Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Winter’s uncle, Christopher Jones, said the child wasnon-verbally autistic and unable to alert anyone that she had been left in the van.
“So… she really couldn’t let anybody know that she was still on the bus,” Christopher said. “She couldn’t advocate for herself at all.”
At a vigil Sunday for Winter, advocates demanded transparency and answers from the daycare as state and local investigators worked to piece together a moment-by-moment account of what happened.
