Aston will soon get a 46-acre park at a property the township recently purchased from the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. The land acquisition was supported by grants and will preserve a large, undeveloped area in a community that has little untouched space.

The property at Red Hill Road and Convent Road was acquired for $1.925 million, $100,000 of which came from the township. It was divested from a larger property that includes a retirement convent and nursing facilities run by the women's congregation, which is based just north of Neumann University.

Natural Lands, the conservation nonprofit that helped secure grants for the project, said the land consists of woodlands and an open meadow and that hiking trails will be added. The property is just 400 feet from West Branch Chester Creek, a state-designated trout-stocking fishery. One of the project's goals is to prevent development that could carry soil and pollutants into the creek.

"It was a bargain sale, which means the sisters accepted a little less than the assessed value," said Robyn Jeney, land protection project manager for Natural Lands. "The preservation of this land is especially significant in a community that is almost 100% developed and with a density of nearly 3,000 residents per square mile."

The Sisters of St. Francis are said to have welcomed the chance to convert the unused land into an open space for the public.

Natural Lands, based in Media, coordinates parks and conservation projects throughout the region — including several in recent months. In Chester County, a 44-acre farm in East Nantmeal Township will be preserved along Beaver Run Creek after a conservation easement was secured for the property. And in Philly, a 24-acre plot in Upper Roxborough, known as the Boy Scout Tract, will be protected from development after donors helped stave off a potential sale by the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.

Delaware County supported the park project in Aston through its Green Ways Grant Program, which works with municipalities and nonprofits to identify green spaces in need of conservation funding.

“We saw this as a great opportunity to protect the environment and preserve this tract of ground as open space in our township for generations to come," Aston Township manager William J. DeFeo III said.

Aston Township officials said they'll have a formal ribbon cutting for the park next spring.

If Kathy Swarts, 70, of Austin, Texas, doesn’t end up getting Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner’s final rose by the end of the season, she teased that Pennsylvania could be in her cards instead. And it’s all because of Delco’s own Susan Noles.

On Thursday’s episode of The Golden Bachelor, Noles, 66, snagged another rose from Turner, 72, guaranteeing we’ll see her on our screens for another week.

The Aston-based wedding officiant and former hair and makeup artist has quickly become a fan favorite for her combination of spunk and empathy. And it’s tempting others besides Turner to keep Noles close.

“I keep saying if things don’t work out with Gerry, I’m going home with Susan,” Swarts said as Noles did her hair. They also joked about how Noles’ farts smell like meatballs — one of the many Italian dishes Noles has been cooking for the women in the house.

In the Bachelor Mansion — the Malibu home where the women vying for Turner’s heart stay — Noles is the unofficial glam team for all its residents.

“I did not do my own makeup today,” Natascha Hardee, 60, (who went home last week) told a reporter for Glamour Magazine while the show was filming earlier this year. “We have a woman in our house who is a hairstylist, a makeup artist, and she also cooks. Her name is Susan. She’s done practically everyone’s hair in the house. She did my makeup for me.”

That’s right — Noles is a girl’s girl and that has remained clear as we see her doing contestants’ hair before they leave for dates with a man she’s also dating.

Friends of Noles say they’re not surprised.

Annemarie Mariani has been having Noles to do her hair for 33 years.

“I first went to her when my hair finally grew back from chemo,” Mariani shared. “I never had short hair and was always telling her not to cut too much as it grew longer. I have heard so many times ‘Don’t you trust me?’ and she was always right. She has the biggest and most genuine heart. She is always the first to help someone out and is so much fun to be around.”

Mariani added that what we see on TV is what you get in real life with Noles.

“As I watch her on the show helping out other contestants and cooking for everyone, [that] is how Susan is off camera,” she said. “She deserves to be the first Golden Bachelorette and find lasting love.”

Mariani is one of a growing fan base for Noles, in hopes she could become the franchise’s first Golden Bachelorette, a show that hasn’t even been confirmed yet.

In this week’s episode, Noles could be seen hanging with the other ladies — they have a little squad called ASKN (the first initials of their names and pronounced like “you’re askin’, we’re tellin’”) — and putting on a show for Turner.

During the show’s group date, which included the 12 women remaining at the start of the show, there was a talent show portion. Noles appeared in a short white robe, leopard bathing suit bottoms, and a white tied headband in her hair before performing “karate” — she chopped a slab of wood in half and let out her signature wide grin.

When emotional moments hit during the episode — and there were several — producers turned to Noles for moments of empathy.

“If one person cries, I cry with them,” Noles told Glamour. “We all love each other.”

And when tensions flared (which is also to be expected on this show), Noles was the voice of reason.

“We’re adults,” Noles said at one point. “We’re not 20-something-year-olds.”

Ultimately, Noles snagged the fifth rose during the rose ceremony, up one spot from last week. The order roses are handed out isn’t an exact science, but earlier names are likely higher up in the Bachelor’s mind.

A trailer for next week’s episode revealed a pickleball tournament is imminent and cut to a clip of a fired-up Noles. Another clip showed a steamy make out between her and Turner.

We obviously hope to see more of her but Noles has told Glamour that her friendship with the women in the house remains strong either way.

“Even if [Turner] is not the one for me, this journey and meeting all these beautiful people means you’re still alive,” she said.

The Golden Bachelor airs Thursdays on ABC at 8 p.m.

On Thursday’s episode of The Golden Bachelor, Susan Noles — Delco’s unofficial ambassador to Bachelor Nation — was sent home.

Noles, 66, of Aston Township, quickly became a fan favorite for her style and charm. A girl’s girl through and through, the karate chopping, meatball cooking, never-have-I-ever leading, Kris Jenner-twinning firecracker was often seen doing the other women’s hair and makeup throughout the series.

As Thursday’s episode progressed, it was clear her connection with Gerry Turner, 72, wasn’t as strong as the ones he formed with other women in the house — or as strong as the bonds she formed with the other women in the house.

Episode 5 of Golden Bachelor opened with the final six women lounging in the Bachelor Mansion patio. A group, including Noles, were in the pool dancing in circles while singing Hava Nagila. When they wrapped, she quipped, “Alright, now we’ll do the Mummers strut.” That’s our girl.

By the end of the episode, Noles was one of the only women who hadn’t shared a significant amount of on-screen time with Turner (which is particularly annoying because press kit photos reveal they shared one-on-one time on a group date, including an unaired kiss).

But she managed to remain the life of the party, raising her arms in the air while on roller coasters for a group date at the Santa Monica Pier and comforting other women who were deep in their feelings as the stakes got higher.

“I absolutely love that [Gerry] chose this [date at the pier],” Noles told producers. “This is the most serious week, and it’s great to just not be so serious and go have fun.”

Still, the pressure was on and Turner only had two roses left to hand out (Faith Martin, 61, secured one during a steamy one-on-one that opened the episode). The three women moving forward would go onto “hometown dates,” where Turner will meet members of the women’s family, including children and sometimes, grandchildren.

Fans have been rallying for Noles from the start of the season. Not just for her to end up with Turner but to get a show of her own.

“Oh pretty please can you please choose Susan as the next Bachelorette?” one user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote. “She’s so much fun, even-keeled, gets along with others.” Others are going as far as rallying for “Justice for Susan.” Another called her a “national treasure.”

There’s also an effort to get her and her doppelgänger, Kris Jenner, together in the same room.

“She hasn’t reached out thus far,” Noles told the show’s official blog, Bachelor Nation. “I would be so happy to meet her. That’s like a dream come true. It’s totally a coincidence that we have the same hairstyle. I’m a hairdresser [and it] has been like this forever.”

By the end, Noles revealed to Turner that it was “scary to know it’s almost over,” and even scarier without knowing “if you’re coming home with me or not.”

When her name wasn’t called, she wished Turner the best of luck. And hugged all her new girlfriends goodbye.

“You’re the best,” Turner told Noles. “I had a lot of fun,” she replied.

Yep, no doubt about it, we knew this Golden Bachelor contestant was a Delco girly. And on Thursday night, she proved it to viewers nationwide for the show’s premiere.

Susan Noles of Aston Township stepped out of her limo dressed in a glitzy lilac ball gown by Jovani with sequins and feather embellishments to meet the first-ever senior Bachelor. And right from the get-go, she brought that collar-county spunk.

“You see these heels?” she told Gerry Turner, 71, before walking away. “I’m very comfortable with 6 inches.”

Last month, ABC revealed that Noles was one of 22 women in the running to date and potentially get engaged to Turner, a widower and retired restaurateur from Indiana.

During the premiere, Noles, 66, a wedding officiant and former hair and makeup artist, quickly caught viewers’ attention for her sass and resemblance to Kardashian momager, Kris Jenner.

“When I saw my mom come out, my jaw dropped,” Brittany Noles Law, Susan’s daughter, told The Inquirer Thursday night. “She looked radiant and confident.”

Then, Law watched her mom say her zinger to Turner as she walked away, leaving him clapping and laughing.

“My jaw dropped,” Law said. “That’s Susan.”

Noles, who graduated from Notre Dame High School in Moylan and is the ex-wife of former Phillies pitcher Dickie Noles, managed to get consistent screen time in the form of the show’s confessional-style interviews.

“As I thought about what I wanted to bring to the Golden Bachelor, my goal was to show the real, authentic me,” Noles wrote on her Facebook page earlier this month. “Funny, class with some sass, an unforgettable style, and a side of Philly.”

At one point during the show, Noles admitted to producers she had already developed a crush on Turner.

“He has a great sense of humor and I think I made him laugh a little,” she said.

But competition is stiff, with women pulling out all the stops to make an impression — from dance moves, to a song, to riding in on a motorcycle.

“The women have been such a delight,” Noles said during one of her one-on-one interviews. “But I’m here for one reason — and that’s Gerry.”

As Turner whittled down the group from 22 women to 16, tensions rose. But Noles managed to get “the final rose,” which is exactly what it sounds like, making her Turner’s final selection of the night.

That gesture guarantees we get at least another week of Noles, and previews of the season ahead suggest she’s staying for at least a little longer, flashing a quick scene with her and Turner sharing a kiss.
