The bus leaves at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

But, don’t try to get on it - the Media Borough Recreation charter bus to South Williamsport sold out quickly at $20 per person.

On Facebook, the organizer of the bus trip, Jenn Metzger, the borough recreation coordinator, said, “Bus trip filled up SO quickly. Thanks for being such an eager community.”

When asked about a second bus, Metzger said there were not two available for Aug. 16.

Bummer.

The borough in Delaware County, about 20 miles south of Philadelphia, is understandably proud - the Media Little League team will play in the 2023 Little League World Series on opening day, Aug. 16, in South Williamsport.

Saturday night, before the recreation department offered a showing of the “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at dusk at Barrall Field, residents were invited to help to make banners to “send Media Little League off in style.”

The Media team won the Mid-Atlantic region championship on Friday against Washington, D.C. The team will make its first Little World Series appearance against Needville, Texas, in the opening round.

The residents of Media, all 5,832 of them, will be cheering the team on.

Media is about the same size in population as the home of the most famous groundhog in Pennsylvania - Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney has a population of about 5,636.

Media has about one-fifth of the population of Harrisburg and one-fourth of the population of Carlisle.

The borough offers a full schedule of yoga, pilates and zumba classes, pickup tennis matches and has held a “Dining Under the Stars” series of outdoor dining experiences during the summer on Wednesday nights since 2008.

If you are going to attend, the borough encourages you to use the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority to “avoid all the hassles of driving and parking in the borough. It’s good for you and good for the environment!”

Media is a suburb of Philadelphia.

According to Niche.com, Media “is one of the best places to live in Pennsylvania. Living in Media offers residents an urban suburban mix feel and most residents rent their homes. Many young professionals live in Media and residents tend to be liberal. The public schools in Media are highly rated.”

The borough says Media residents “proudly call Media ‘Everybody’s Hometown.’ This is much more than a slogan - it also describes a real state of mind.”

As the Little League World Series gets underway, fans may recall last year’s event that included a traumatic injury before it started.

Easton Oliverson, a player with the Snow Canyon All Stars from Santa Clara, Utah, was attending last year as the Mountain Region champion. Oliverson fell from his bunk bed in the player dorms on Aug. 5, 2022, fracturing his skull.

Oliverson was treated at Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital then transferred in late August to a facility in Salt Lake City.

In September 2022 the family filed a lawsuit against Little League Baseball Inc. and bunk bed maker, John Savoy & Son, doing business as Savoy Contract Furniture of Williamsport, Pa.

That lawsuit is continuing to unfold in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. While the family has not issued an update on Oliverson for quite some time, the family’s attorney said this spring that the boy “will have issues the remainder of his life.”

A state Senate committee on Tuesday unanimously voted to advance a bill that would add restrictions to children’s social media use.

Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York), one of the prime co-sponsors of SB 22 along with with Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia), said during the Communications and Technology Committee hearing that the goal of the legislation was to “empower” parents and safeguard teenagers’ mental health.

“The use of social media by teenagers is virtually universal, and at the same time we are facing a mental health crisis. unlike anything we have seen before,” Phillips-Hill said. “The data shows that far too many minors are struggling with mental health and that social media is a contributing factor.”

She cited data from a 2022 Pew Research Center report that found 95% of teens reported using YouTube, and 67% of teens have used TikTok. A 2018 Pew study found 45% of teens reported “feeling overwhelmed by the drama on social media” and 26% reported feeling worse about their own lives, Phillips-Hill noted, and a recent CDC report found that 1 in 6 high school students reported being electronically bullied in 2021, she added.

SB 22 would amend Pennsylvania Title 50 to restrict access to social media by minors under 16 years old, by prohibiting social media companies or platforms from “intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or negligently causing or encouraging a minor to access content which the social media companies know or should have known subjects one or more minors to harm that is detrimental to the physical health, mental health or the wellbeing of a minor or that creates a reasonable likelihood of bodily injury or death to the minor.”

Phillips-Hill said the bill would also “prohibit data-mining for any user under the age of 18.” And, SB 22 would require a parent or guardian’s express consent for a minor to create social media accounts.

Companies that violate the requirements could be sued for actual and punitive damages, and if it became law, would be under the exclusive jurisdiction of the state attorney general.

The ACLU of Pennsylvania said in a statement that it opposes SB 22 — which it called “well-intentioned” —because it would “threaten the First Amendment rights of young people,” and invite parental surveillance, which could potentially deny teenagers access to online support or help. The ACLU-PA said the way the bill defines “harm” is “broad, subjective, and unenforceable,” and would likely require more data collection from all users, not just minors.

“SB 22 will likely have dire consequences for young people, especially vulnerable youth,” the ACLU-PA said.

The bill now heads to the full Senate for consideration.

Everybody’s Hometown is debuting a new, environmentally-friendly tradition.

On Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Transition Town Greater Media, a local organization dedicated to addressing climate change and sustainability, is hosting its first annual EcoFest at Heritage Park in Media Borough.

“EcoFest is really our way of highlighting all the great environmental resources in the greater Media area, where we are pretty active,” said Shari Steuber, an initiating member of Transition Town Greater Media.

Organizers have planned family-friendly activities including food, music, a guided nature walk, and environmental resources.

There will be hands-on learning workshops such as how to replace plastic products with greener alternatives and what trees and shrubbery work best in a residential yard.

“We have a bunch of organizations coming with tables and information about what they’re doing and the kind of projects that they are putting out and kind of the outcomes that they’re hoping for,” Steuber said.

Steuber said various groups from across Delaware County are simply trying to make people aware of the actions they can take in their everyday lives to reduce their carbon footprint.

Organizations from Media and its surrounding communities are participating in the event including the Media Borough Environmental Advisory Council, Green Wagon Project, Tri-State Bird Rescue, Bee City, Greener Partners, the NAACP Media Area Branch, and others.

“There’s just so much going on around here and we were just kind of trying to bring it all together and let people know that it’s a great place to live if you want to learn how to be environmentally conscious,” Steuber said.

Media’s first EcoFest is the brainchild of Julie Smith, a volunteer with Transition Town Greater Media. Smith, who is also involved with Keep Media Green, has been active in preserving open space in the borough.

“In being part of Keep Media Green, I realized that there’s such a green community here, and the people are all working really hard,” Smith said. “But a lot of people work independently, the groups were working independently. And I was trying to figure out a way to bring people together and coordinate.”

Smith came up with the idea of an EcoFest while on a walk with a borough council member. She then turned to an organization with a track record of results.

“I brought it to Transition Town Greater Media, because I couldn’t figure out a way to actually make this happen, except with an organization behind me,” she said. “And they loved the idea and people got really excited about it — and it just blossomed from there.”

Smith hopes that this event demonstrates to attendees the value of an old mission statement she would see as a child at Gnome Countryside in Lancaster County: protect what you love.

“I realized if we’re going to fight for the environment and want to make things better, we have to show why you love what’s right outside of your door, why you want to protect it, and not only show them why, but make it fun and exciting,” she said.

WILLIAMSPORT, PA — Delco has been taking on the world all summer, and for fourteen straight games, they've been as invincible as the 2022 Phillies were last fall. The team from Media finally met their match in the Little League World Series Wednesday night, falling to Needeville, Texas, 2-1.

Before a national audience on ESPN and a packed crowd under the lights in Williamsport, Media put forth a valiant effort, battling down to their last strike. It wasn't quite enough to overcome an epic pitching performance from Texas starter DJ Jablonski, who threw five and two-thirds innings of one-run ball.

Media is not eliminated, however, and they could even have a chance at redemption against Texas in the future. On Saturday at 2 p.m., they'll play the the team that loses the matchup between the Northwest and New England.

Media pitcher Austin Crowley was electric once again, just days after he shut out Washington D.C. up in Connecticut in the game that clinched his team's birth in Williamsport. He shut down Texas through three innings, racking up six strikeouts. He was vulnerable in the 4th, finally allowing two runs and snapping Media's absurd 15-inning scoreless streak dating back to their previous two games.

On the Texas side, Needeville's Jablonski was just as impressive, mowing down seven Media hitters through four innings, and shutting out Media into the fifth.

It was Christian Nunez who finally got Media going, ripping a liner into the left field alley and tearing putting in a huge effort to stretch a double into a triple. A few pitches later his effort paid off, as he scored on a passed ball to narrow Texas' lead to 2-1.

Sharp defense prevailed for Media in the top of the sixth, and they rallied late with a walk and a passed ball to put a man on second with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. But Texas was just barely able to close it out.

The past several days have been nothing short of magical for the Delco boys, getting shout-outs from the Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, and Flyers on social media. More personalized well wishes were offered by figures as varied as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Phillies managing partner John Middleton, and Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni.

No Pennsylvania team has won it all since Levittown did it in 1960. But most Little League aficionados remember well the boys from Red Land in York County, who won the USA championship in 2015 after an epic summer of dingers.

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) -- The Media Little Leaguers are used to watching the Phillies go to work.

But on Sunday, the roles were reversed as the Phillies arrived in Williamsport just in time to cheer on the kids from Delco.

Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper were fired up after Nathan Hellberg's single in the fifth inning that tied the game at 2.

But, Rhode Island scored five runs in the sixth inning and Media was not able to recover, ending its Little League World Series in a 7-2 loss.

The loss was so painful, 10-year-old Oliver O'Brien was moved to tears.

O'Brien, his mom and his brother were among dozens of people at State Street Pub watching as Media was eliminated from the LLWS.

"You've seen them win so much and see them go out like that, it really hurts a lot," O'Brien said.

Fans had a worried look on their face as Media fell behind late in the game against Rhode Island.

In the end, Media's championship dreams were dashed.

"And we're proud of them," Katey McVerry said. "We are so proud of them. They did something that like every little boy and every little girl dreams of."

Fans are celebrating the fact that the boys from Media even made it to the LLWS, creating memories that will no doubt last a lifetime.

"They had the Philadelphia Phillies come out to support them, instead of the other way around, so I feel like they accomplished so much throughout this whole World Series run," Jordan Graves said.

The game put a national spotlight on Delaware County. Fans are proud of the team for making it as far as they did, giving them a round of applause.

"It was an exciting game," Robert Wright said. "They gave us something to cheer about, just awesome for the town, for the borough."

The borough is planning a parade for the team when they come home to celebrate a great season.
