NEWTOWN, PA — Bucks County grocer Jim McCaffrey Sr., who opened his first store in Lower Makefield in 1986, was honored Wednesday with a Paul Harris Fellow Award by the members of the Newtown Rotary Club.
In presenting the award, Rotary Club President Steve Sabel commended the Upper Makefield resident for successfully growing his first store into eight locations in Bucks and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania and in Mercer County, New Jersey. Today, his stores and his commissary employ more than 1,000 associates and earn about $200 million annually in revenue.
To underscore McCaffrey's commitment to the community, Sabel read from the store's mission statement, which says, "Supporting the people of the communities it serves is an important and integral part of our values. We do that in many ways by providing food for people in need, offering financial support to organizations, participating in local events, sitting on the board of non-profits. Our policy is to support local organizations that provide a needed benefit of which we serve, especially those with a focus on food.”

“For our club, he has donated to our Hope on the Vine fundraiser, the club’s annual golf outing for Pickering Manor and has supported our spring and summer food drives at McCaffrey’s, said Sabel.
Sabel was joined by the club’s board of directors and District Governor Helen Cook “in honoring a Bucks Cpunty hero - Jim McCaffrey - as a Paul Harris Fellow.”
“This is a very humbling experience,” said McCaffrey. “I’m truly blessed to be a part of this community. I made a commitment in every one of the communities that we’ve opened a store to not only do business in that community but to be an integral part of that community. We try to do that in so many different ways.
“I tell my people, ‘We think we’re in the food business, but we’re not. We’re in the people business.' It’s all about people, not only our customers but our suppliers and our associates. We’re all part of the community and we’re proud to be part of the community.”
McCaffrey joins a prestigious group of individuals from around the world who have been named Paul Harris Fellows including Mother Theresa, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, American actress and singer Pearl Bailey, former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, Astronaut Jim Lovell, former UN Secretary Javier Perez de Cuellar and polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk.

NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — Upper Makefield children’s book author Shari Faden Donahue has penned another whale of a tale. And this time it’s all about one of her favorite subjects - ice cream.
In her fifth book, “Zebra Striped Whale’s Ice Cream Party,” Donahue takes her readers on another magical journey under the sea, this time with a mermaid and a cast of sea creatures as they reveal their favorite ice cream flavors.

"Oh no no," Carbbie cries. "That's a terrible flavor. Cookies and cream is the one that I favor."
As each creature argues why their flavor is the best, the Zebra Striped Whale enters the conversation, spouting, “Of course, we’re all different. No one is wrong or right. Ice cream with friends makes the world extra bright.”
“Everyone feels very strongly about their ice cream,” said Donahue. “And that comes through in the pages of the book. The idea is that ice cream is a smile maker and gives a connection, but also to remember that everyone has their likes and dislikes, and that’s okay.”
As a special treat, the book includes the instructions for making Zebra-Striped Whale's favorite: A Poka Dot Sundae, with the explicit instructions to "Eat right away."
Donahue published the new book in celebration of the 20th anniversary of her Newtown ice cream store. She and her husband, Tom, opened the one-of-a-kind store on South State Street two decades ago, naming it after the star of her books - the Zebra-Striped Whale.
“We had no idea what we were doing. I never had a store like this. It was just a dream,” Shari laughed, remembering that on opening day when they went to make a milkshake, they had no milk. “People were so nice and understanding,” she said.
The book-themed ice cream parlor has since become a must-experience destination in Bucks County with its whimsical decor and its delicious assortment of ice cream treats, including crepes, sundaes, and smoothies.
Husband Tom can often be found behind the counter using a frozen granite slab to make the store’s signature “Whirlwinds” by hand-whirling an array of gourmet toppings together into a luscious ice cream, yogurt or sorbet treat.
The store makes you wish you were a kid again with its fun, elegant, eclectic atmosphere with free Wi-Fi, thematic party packages for children and adults, a children’s library, original art exhibit, beautifully-wrapped chocolate pretzel gift trays and ice cream cakes.
“It’s really cool to have books associated with our store and that the character of the whale has grown with us," said Donahue. "I also love the store and the books because it connects me to my dad.”
Donahue, a book author/illustrator and publisher, made a splash 22 years ago when she published her first Zebra-Striped Whale children’s book, inspired by her father, who was an avid reader and who loved the ocean.
“My dad was a big swimmer and he loved the ocean,” she said. “The whale is a symbol of my dad. And yes, he loved ice cream.”

NEWTOWN, PA — A handful of new businesses including a new fast casual restaurant, an iconic regional jewelry store and a furniture store have announced plans to open at the Village at Newtown Shopping Center on Eagle Road.
CAVA, a fast casual restaurant chain known for its Mediterranean-inspired customizable bowls, is leasing the former MOD Pizza shop next to Crumbld and across the patio from restaurant rival, Chipotle, which specializes in Mexican-inspired dishes.
When it opens it will be the chain’s first location in Bucks and its 10th in Pennsylvania. Its other locations are in Collegeville, Newtown Square, Glen Mills, Lancaster, Montgomeryville, Plymouth Meeting, Rittenhouse, Ardmore and Temple University.
The new CAVA will have 38 seats inside and 17 seats outside. It will operate two shifts with up to 20 employees per shift.

CAVA is best known for its colorful Mediterranean-inspired bowls, pitas, dips, spreads and dressings.
A sampling of its menu includes a spicy lamb and avocado bowl, steak and harissa bowl, Greek salad, grain bowls, pita sandwiches, pita chips, humus and desserts.
The chain was launched in 2006 by first generation Greek Americans in Maryland. In 2018, CAVA Group bought the Zoe’s Kitchen chain, becoming the largest Mediterranean restaurant operator in the U.S. with more than 350 locations.
According to its website, CAVA is grounded in the Mediterranean way of life, where food is at the center of culture and connection.

Furniture Store Opening This Fall
The Lovesac Company, which sells unique, high-quality furniture derived through its proprietary “Designed for Life” platform, is scheduled to open this fall at the Village of Newtown.
The showroom will be located at the former site of the Head Over Heels boutique on the McCaffrey’s side of the shopping center.
At the new Lovesac showroom, shoppers will experience a wide product offering, consisting of the modular couch platform called Sactionals and featuring the innovative reclining seat available as an add-on to Sactionals configurations, premium foam beanbag chairs called Sacs, the versatile viral PillowSac Accent Chair, and more.

Also joining the lineup at the shopping center will be the iconic Philadelphia jewelry store - Steven Singer Jewelers - which will be opening a new store next to the Capital Grille.

The owners said this expansion marks the beginning of a new chapter for the store, which they said is looking forward to bringing its expertise and passion to Newtown.

Newly opened at the shopping center are Flourish Cafe and Love & Honey Chicken.
Flourish Cafe, a “European style” restaurant, is located inside the former KO Korean Restaurant next to the Capital Grille.
Flourish has built a five-star reputation for its made from scratch food and baked goods from Eastern Europe including its breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings.
The cafe serves an extensive breakfast menu featuring fresh fruit crepes, potato pancakes, waffles, oatmeal porridge and syrniki (fried Eastern Slavic curd cheese pancakes).
Also new to the shopping center is Love & Honey Fried Chicken. The shop is the first suburban location for the Fishtown-based fried chicken sandwich shop.
The new eatery is predominantly a call in and takeout service although there are a limited amount of indoor seating provided.
Rated as the best fried chicken restaurant in Philadelphia in 2018, the eatery is known for its hand breaded fried chicken sandwiches, its chicken tenders, and house made sauces.

NEWTOWN, PA — The teachers in the Council Rock School District will be returning to the classroom next week under a new five-year contract with the district.
The school board earlier this summer voted 7-2 to ink an agreement with the Council Rock Education Association that will ensure labor peace in the district for the next five years. The new contract will extend through June 30, 2030.
Under the agreement, teachers will receive salary increases each year of the contract, ranging from $2500 to $4,000, plus step increases.
Contract Highlights
Board president Ed Tate called the new five-year contract "a positive achievement that will
provide stability, but also predictability for the biggest line item in our budget."
He commended the board's negotiating team, including board members Anne Horner, Linda Stone, Tracey Osecki and Nicole Khan, along with business manager Anthony Rapp and director of human resources Ronnie Spring, for the long hours and hard work spent negotiating the contract.
"We talk about Students First. There is no more important element than our teachers and ensuring the quality of our teachers," said Tate. "This contract goes a long way toward that. There are small things that add up that make this a very good contract," he said.
Board member Tracey Osecki called the new contract “favorable to the teachers and to the school district. In particular, we believe this new contract will make it easier for the district to attract teachers, both at the entry level and teachers transferring to Council Rock,” she said.
Board member Linda Stone added that during the negotiations, both sides had some wins and both sides made some concessions. "We looked very carefully at our budget and what we thought we could afford and I think we came back with a wonderful compromise that I feel is a win-win for everyone."
Horner added that it was an "amazing experience" being part of the negotiating process. "There were many, many days and hours upon hours spent learning and understanding the needs and wants on both sides. This district has amazing staff who care to educate and move the educational needle on every student and who live Students First Always."
She continued, "We have excellent teachers in this district that we need to retain as well as we need to recruit to fill open positions with the best qualified. This agreement will surely be achieved on both of these objectives.”
Two board members voted against the contract - Joseph Hidalgo and Michael Roosevelt.
"This is where we get to make the biggest impact as board members, being fiscally responsible with the organization and trying to negotiate a great contract that is fair and equal to both sides. This contract probably achieves that,” said Hidalgo. “However, I will be voting no on the collective bargaining agreement, not because I don’t think the teachers deserve every penny they are going to get. But it falls outside of the parameters that I have set and have been stated publicly for the past five years,” said Hidalgo.
That parameter included not increasing taxes above 2.5 percent for 2025-26. "We could have negotiated that money - about $800,000 - spread out among the whole contract base, but that wasn't done," he said.
