“Dear Rick, Over the past three plus years, my father Joseph Ceuch has lived at home assisted by the caregivers from your company Always Best Care of Greater Bristol. This letter is a personal thank you from my father and the entire Ceuch family on how your caregivers treated and attended to my father during this time. The caregivers became part of our extended family who shared in countless family events resulting in beautiful lasting memories. Caregivers Frances Boateng, Jeremy Turner, and Yanice Hernandez were awesome in their care of my father. I want to especially acknowledge Francis as a person who went above and beyond his responsibility and became part of the Ceuch inner circle. It was not uncommon for Francis on his off days to stop by during a family picnic to say hello...he is truly loved by my father. Again, I want to thank you for the loving care your caregivers provided my father. I would highly recommend your company to anyone interested in having a caregiver attend to a loved one. “Our sister, Barbara has early-onset dementia , and was in sudden need of a personal care assistant until placement in a quality skilled nursing facility became available. We reached out to home health care agencies in her local area but, by this point, had already worked with several agencies for med reminders for Barbara (and 24/7 care for our Mom in another area of CT) and were a bit skeptical that that we’d find one that could provide consistent quality of care. When I spoke with Rick Downey of Always Best Care Senior Services in Bristol, he conveyed both confidence in his knowledge of health care and empathy in understanding the frustrations that families experience when seeking quality care for their loved ones. We were next contacted by their care coordinator,Heather Kozikowski, who came to our sister’s home to conduct an assessment and further explain the services offered by Always Best Care.A further testament to the exceptional quality of Always Best Care is the service and care we’ve received after Barbara is no longer a client; our thanks to Always Best Care for the excellent care of our sister, and the peace-of-mind it afforded our family knowing that she was in such kind and competent hands!”

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Torres Restaurant or visit Sellers Hall Historical Marker, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Upper Darby, PA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your PA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Upper Darby, PA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Upper Darby, PA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Upper Darby, PA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Upper Darby, PA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Little Flower Manor
  • A Place For Mom Senior Living Advisor Sheri Simpson
  • St Francis Center for Rehabilitation Healthcare

Fifteen acres of undeveloped land in Upper Darby Township face an uncertain fate as environmental groups rush to secure funding to purchase and protect the site.

Upper Darby residents and environmentalists are working to pull together $8 million to secure the purchase of the Mozino Tract, a parcel of land in Drexel Hill that, until recently, was slated to become a mixed-use housing and retail development.

Upper Darby’s council in August voted to table a proposal to rezone the land, currently zoned for residential use, to allow for a blend of single-family homes, townhouses, apartments, commercial spaces, and community gathering spots. Township staff at the meeting said they worked with the developer to create the mixed-use zoning proposal, a plan they said would help meet core township goals of increasing tax revenue and adding diverse housing options far more than an initial proposal to put 56 single-family homes on the site.

Now, developer Greg Lingo of Rockwell Development Group says he has abandoned the plans to build the mixed-use development and is giving organizers a chance to purchase the land for open space preservation.

If they can’t pull the money together, Lingo will go back to his original plan to put 56 single-family homes on the Mozino Tract, a proposal that is already permitted under the current zoning and won’t require special approvals.

As the high price tag looms, organizers say they’re confident they can find the money to keep the Mozino Tract wild.

The Mozino Tract is a 15-acre wooded parcel located between State and Township Line Roads in Drexel Hill. The land is currently owned by the Peter S. and Catherine G. Mozino Deed of Trust and is under contract to be sold to Lingo’s Rockwell Drexel LLC.

At an August meeting, Upper Darby residents packed the council chambers, urging the township to reject the plan for a mixed-use development and asking council to purchase the land to preserve it as open space. Many described spending time in the wooded area that, while not officially a public park, has been a place to commune with nature.

Amid pushback from residents, Lingo at the meeting said he would be willing to sell the property to the township, despite thinking that it would not be “a great use,” and approximated the cost of the sale at $8 million. Council unanimously tabled the zoning ordinance and voiced an openness to purchasing the property if funds could be raised.

The property’s assessed value is $446,920, according to Delaware County property records.

Lingo in an email on Sept. 15 wrote that it was immediately clear when he first met with neighbors that “they did not want any development” of the Mozino Tract, so he thought it best to work with the township on the mixed-use plan to “maximize open space, introduce different housing types across different price points, improve pedestrian mobility, maximize taxable income to the township and to dedicate a public park.”

Lingo’s email affirmed his commitment to Upper Darby, where he grew up, and said it was his “fault for assuming that I knew what was best” in proposing the mixed-use project.

If the environmental groups can’t find the funding to purchase the property, Lingo plans to enter into an agreement with a public or national homebuilder to build the 56 single-family homes.

Rockwell Development Group is “communicating regularly” with the environmental groups, Lingo wrote.

Bonnie Hallam, an organizer spearheading the effort to preserve the Mozino Tract, said local environmentalists “have all confidence” that they will be able to raise the $8 million.

“We really believe that this is going to be conserved, and we want the township to get on board with that,” Hallam said.

Hallam said she and other organizers submitted their first grant application on Sept. 25 to the Open Space Institute and have been in conversation with local and national funding groups, including the William Penn Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The group is going to start a community fundraising effort through the Foundation for Delaware County, she said.

The environmental leaders are also hoping to secure money through an open space referendum on the ballot in Delco this November. If the referendum is approved by voters, the county could spend $120 million financing land conservation projects, including “protecting natural areas from development.”

“We’re really going to work hard to secure that because we feel that the county is very much interested in this piece of property as well,” Hallam said.

Delaware County “has not had any conversations with Mr. Lingo regarding the purchase of the tract,” according to county spokesperson George Basile.

Hallam hopes Upper Darby Township will agree to be the title holder for the land, an agreement they have not made yet.

Upper Darby Township is “exploring its options right now” and “hoping for a resolution soon” regarding the Mozino Tract, public information officer Rob Ellis said in an email.

For Hallam and her co-organizers, preserving the open space — its wildlife, tall trees, and bubbling creek — is priceless. The Save The Mozino Forest group organized a rally on Saturday at Collenbrook Church.

“We have a really unique piece of property here that’s doing hard-working environmental services for the township,” Hallam said.

Upper Darby exploring 4-day school week partly to recruit teachers

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- The Upper Darby School District is in the early stages of researching a four-day school week to not only retain teachers but also recruit new ones while improving classroom instruction, officials said.

"Teacher recruitment and retention is a concern," said Upper Darby Superintendent Dr. Daniel McGarry.

McGarry told Action News that they still have a lot of research to do and that no recommendations have been made.

"This is the fewest amount of teachers that we've lost in a year," McGarry said.

He said they'd like to keep that momentum going because turnover is a worry.

"You can't just continue to go and tax your community. You got to look at creative things to keep people working here," McGarry said.

McGarry added, "We're never going to be able to financially compete with wealthier school districts who by the very nature of their zip code can pay their teachers better than we can pay them."

The school board asked a committee of staff, students, and community members to find a way to be more competitive while also considering ways to improve learning while lessening impacts on families.

"The one thing we're not going to do is put our parents or our students in a bad position," McGarry said.

The committee, referred to as the Act 80 Exploration Committee, presented several scenarios to the board in August.

Three options made the cut, and then they decided to focus on researching one option that includes four days in-person, with day five as a flex day, where students would complete work at home on their own among many possibilities for that day.

Action News reporter Corey Davis asked McGarry if he supports the idea.

"I support the idea of exploring it. I have to get myself to a place to understand how we can make sure that we're doing right for all the kids and the staff," McGarry said.

Action News asked parents and guardians about how a four-day week could impact their lives.

"Would it be a three-day weekend? So now the parents are inconvenienced because they work Monday- Friday. How does that work?" asked Nicole Norman of Upper Darby.

"Four days is better," said Ala Uddin of Upper Darby, "My wife is not working. She's in the home."

"I would prefer five instead of four days," said Garmai Gray-Smith of Upper Darby.

McGarry said, "The board had a lot of questions. I want to be clear that nothing has been approved, nothing has been adopted. There'd have to be public agreement to this," McGarry said.

McGarry said it's more complicated in underfunded districts.

They'll have to look at childcare options, feeding kids who rely on school meals and additional needs for special education.

This idea is in the early stages; no recommendations have been made, officials said.

The committee will come back to the board in March with more research on what a four-day school week could look like.

Residents press Upper Darby council to reject rezoning of Mozino Tract

DREXEL HILL, Pa. (WPVI) -- Residents hoping to preserve the Mozino Tract urged Upper Darby Township council members this week to vote against a proposal that would rezone the 15-acre forest for mixed-use development.

Supporters of the group Save The Mozino Forest attended the council meeting, applauding speakers who called for keeping the wooded area - located between State and Township Line roads - unchanged.

"It's one of the last forests in Upper Darby Township," said Lee Jordan of Drexel Hill.

Rockwell Development Group, which owns the property, is seeking to rezone the tract from its current designation allowing 56 single-family homes to a mixed-use plan that includes townhomes, apartments, retail and a park.

Members of Save The Mozino Forest argued the proposal would harm the community.

"We feel that we are very densely populated right now. Building that many homes would be a public health and safety issue for our area," Jordan said. "You can't even get down State Road. Traffic is horrible. It would be an extreme strain on our public services."

Environmental concerns were also raised.

"This tract has over 2,000 trees, has a creek running through it. It's a soak-up place for stormwater," said Bonnie Hallam of Drexel Hill.

In a statement, Rockwell President Greg Lingo said, "We have been working tirelessly with the neighbors and broader community to create a new community for us all to be proud of, in an area that already has significant traffic issues."

He also said, "This mixed-use plan provides open space, significantly higher net income to the Township and School District, pedestrian connectivity and a much-needed variety of new housing types."

Hallam questioned that claim, saying, "I don't know that they worked with the neighbors."

Residents said they hope council members will reject the zoning ordinance.

Upper Darby Council Vice President Noah Fields said leaders are still evaluating the proposal.

"It's going to be built on, and so the question is not should we build or should we not build. It's private property.... I think we should build the future. It shouldn't just be something that happens to us, and we should build something that makes sense for the future of Upper Darby," Fields said.

Fields said no vote is currently scheduled.

Residents say they plan to continue meeting with local leaders as they work to preserve the Mozino Tract.

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Upper Darby residents may soon be paying a lot more for their garbage disposal and sewer operations if the proposed 2027 budget goes through.

In his proposed budget, Mayor Ed Brown has asked for the yearly trash fee to be raised from $325 to $425, as well as a $20 increase on sewer fees. He called the increases necessary for those utilities to become self-supporting operations.

However, there are a lot of residents, like Scott Buscaglia, who are not happy with that proposed price jump.

“$120 goes a long way. It goes in your gas tank. It goes into your food, which is expensive now. I don’t think it’s a good thing,” Buscaglia said.

Some of Upper Darby’s senior residents said if passed, the tax would hurt people like them, who live on fixed incomes.

“I can’t work to make that extra money. I have to keep using my social security, for more and more taxes,” said Heather Rose, who has lived in Upper Darby for more than 50 years.

“We just don’t have that in our pockets anymore,” said Linda Baxter. “Social Security does not go up by that much. Neither do our retirement funds.”

Valerie Wyles asked for the township’s elected officials to find the pulse of the community they serve. “Even people who were actually able to pay these extras are suffering because of our economy,” she said. “Our economy sucks.”

Township officials said they were looking forward to working with the mayor to see how they could reduce the proposed tax hikes.

Council still has two full budget hearings before they can take a vote on the budget. A vote is expected for December.
