They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic East Brunswick Museum Corporation gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

“ALWAYS BEST CARE, Princeton Junction is the place to call if you need help in caring for a loved one. We have a brother and his significant other who were living independently and when visiting them realized they had not been eating or keeping their home clean. Since we knew of Always Best Care and heard of their excellent reputation we contacted them. They immediately stepped in and assisted us in knowing what steps we needed to take. After taking both our brother and his significant other to the doctors and learning that they had the beginnings of Alzheimer’s disease, we met with Carmen who helped us set up a plan. She suggested that we start with a few days a week of in home care so that we would know that they were eating. She provided us with excellent aids that not only helped prepare meals, but also interacted with our family members to encourage socialization. These few days increased to five days a week which left us with Saturday and Sunday to monitor their eating. While this was taking place, Carmen helped us find an Assisted Living Community where they could move. We visited several in the area and decided on one after consulting with Carmen. She and Gimbert were always available to take our calls if we had any questions. They helped us with finding someone to clean out the house and assisted us in relocating our bother and his significant other to their new home. We have recommended Always Best Care to several of our neighbors who have needed assistance with caring for loved ones. Carmen is on top of any situation that needs attention. Whether a person needs an aid for a week, a month or indefinitely she arranges the right person for the client’s needs. Always Best Care, Carmen and Gimbert, cared for our family members as if they were their own family. We would not have been able to care for our family members as well as the aids from Always Best Care.Hopefully we will not need the services of Always Best Care again, but if we do we know that they will be there to help us.”

“I am a current client of this provider I hired Always Best Care for Mom Monday through Friday. They are expensive, but that's the going rate, unfortunately. They were very reactive; I called them, and the next day, they were at the house doing the assessment to see what was exactly needed. However, there were two occasions where I called them and did not get a response back within 12 hours. On one occasion, I called them on a Friday afternoon, and they called me back on Saturday at 10:00. But, they're not bad. The person they recommended was wonderful. I don't have complaints about that.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in East Brunswick, NJ?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Orchid Fine Asian Cuisine or visit Museum at Buccleuch Mansion, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in East Brunswick, NJ, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NJ's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in East Brunswick, NJ understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care East Brunswick, NJ

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A young man from East Brunswick just took home first place in a 24-hour tech "hackathon" hosted at The College of New Jersey.

The young man is Kyrollos Girgis, who grew up in East Brunswick.

He is currently a student at Middlesex County community college. There, he and two other students, Christopher Hausheer (grew up in South Plainfield) and Dhruv Sethi (grew up in Edison) were joined by a fourth student, Shahnawaz Haque, who is enrolled at NJIT.

The team of four entered something they invented together: An inflatable cylindrical-shaped robot, which they call the “Expand-a-Conda."

The young men said they were inspired by the tragic earthquakes in Turkey last year: After watching search efforts for people trapped in rubble, they came up with the concept for an airbag that could squeeze in and around surfaces of destroyed buildings. The air bag uses heat-sensing technology to find trapped survivors.

They also specifically designed the bag to be puncture-resistant and nimble.

Their invention could be used to help find survivors after an earthquake or other natural disaster, car accident, tunnel collapse or terrorist attack.

Hackathons are competitions where teams typically have 24 hours to build a product — entirely from scratch — that is useful to modern life. Sleep is rare and breakthroughs are common.

The team took home first place in two categories: "Best Overall Hack" and "Best AI Application Built with Cloudflare." For their win, each young man received a state-of-the-art gaming monitor and a gold-plated winner badge.

“I have never created anything similar to this idea before, so I had to rely on my background as an engineering science major in problem solving and prototyping,” said Hausheer, from South Plainfield. “I made iterative goals for myself and tested many prototypes, learning useful information each time to improve the final design.”

“After it was all said and done, I was very pleased with our finished project,” said Girgis. “I would have been satisfied without the win, but it was well deserved for my team and me.”

“The hackathon wasn’t just about code, it was about pushing boundaries, learning from each other and making a significant societal impact.”

All the young men are members of the Computer Science Club.

“I cannot be any prouder than this,” said their faculty advisor, Middlesex College business and computer science professor Dhruv Chunawala. “My number-one goal is to make students ready for the real world. With the club, we always try to touch on the latest and greatest technology and how we can implement it to make the world a better place.”

With AI technology evolving each day, Chunawala admits that classroom experience can only go so far. That’s why he tries to have the Computer Science Club take part in competitions and real-world experiences. With almost 120 members, the Computer Science Club is the biggest club on campus.

Chunawala also said he would love to see Middlesex community college host its own tech hackathon one day.

Patch Staff

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – After listening to residents’ concerns, East Brunswick has decided to continue with loose-leaf pick-up service, Mayor Brad Cohen announced.

Back in August, when the Township was close to inking an agreement with a garbage contractor, it was announced that East Brunswick would phase out the pick-up of loose leaves.

But the Township has now modified its plan.

The issue with loose leaves pick-up was primarily safety, complying with DEP regulations, and the cost, Cohen said in a public message.

“Regarding safety, first responders uniformly object to the piling of leaves in the streets. Besides narrowing the roads, the coefficient of friction for wet leaves equals that of ice,” Cohen said.

Find out what's happening in East Brunswickwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The township will now strictly enforce the ordinance that requires that all loose leaves be left at the curb and not piled in the streets. Fines will be increased as a disincentive for disregarding this safety measure, Cohen said.

“As for the DEP regulations, the Department of Public Works will provide a schedule that gives a range of dates for pick-ups and divides the township into regions. Since the falling of leaves is unpredictable, the schedule will aim to strike a balance between helping residents prepare for pick-ups and providing the flexibility that the township needs to avoid DEP penalties as it attends to the 184 miles of township roads,” Cohen said.

This service, however, may have an impact on the 2024 budget. But it’s too early for township officials to determine the said impact.

"We will continue to work hard to keep control of municipal taxes as I have had a record of less than one percent per year increases since taking office in 2017. Neither the Township Council, nor I, would like to see that change,” Cohen said.

Earlier this year, East Brunswick signed a contract with their current hauler IWS. They were the only company that responded to the Township’s bid.

“We are working in an environment where many townships have faced 100% increases, and several have given up this service entirely. Despite these obstacles, we sought to improve the service provided to our residents and strengthen our relationship with IWS. Having a good relationship with our hauler helps to maintain the service demands of the township,” the Mayor said.

In the next few days, residents will be receiving a flyer that will highlight the modifications to be expected in January 2024.

East Brunswick opted for a twice-a-week refuse pickup schedule as IWS could not provide a service schedule that changes during the year.

“We would rather go to twice-a-week pick-up all year as opposed to once a week all year. New 95-gallon bins will be delivered in the Spring and each resident will get one for refuse and one for recycling. One armed automated trucks will be used once everyone has received their bins and IWS has secured enough automated trucks,” Cohen said.

The new schedule will still begin on Jan. 1, 2024, using the present garbage cans and the rear-loading trucks. Bulk pick-up will continue at no charge but will need to be scheduled.

According to China Highlights," Different from its portryal in in Western culture, a Dragon in Chinese culture is a mythical, auspicious, and supreme being/creature. In Chinese mythology, Dragons have great power to control wind and rain, soar through the skies, and turn over rivers and seas, as well as bringing prosperity to the world.

Being a believed benefit to farming in an agricultural society, dragons are considered mighty mascots, communicating between heaven, earth, and humans to bring good weather and hence plentiful harvests and/or a boom in wealth.

Therefore, in ancient times, emperors were regarded as real dragons and the sons of Heaven, and Chinese people were assumed to the descendants of dragons. To worship dragons' dignity and divinity, China's ancients put the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac, and it has long been the most popular zodiac animal in China. Many Chinese couples choose to have a baby in a year of the Dragon."

The conclusion of the event was the traditional Lion Dance which would make its way out the door of the library and onto the municipal mall to the delight of children and adults who cheered on the two lions who wound through the plaza, dancing and posing to the music of gongs and drums.

In Chinese culture, the lion symbolizes power, wisdom, and superiority. People perform lion dances at Chinese festivals or big occasions to bring good fortune and chase away evil spirits.

The lion dance is one of the most important traditions at Chinese New Year. It is done to bring prosperity and good luck for the upcoming year. The lion dance is also a way to create a festive atmosphere and bring happiness.

Performed in a lion costume, accompanied by the music of beating drums, clashing cymbals, and resounding gongs, lion dances imitate a lion's various movements or demonstrate martial arts agility, depending on the style.

EAST BRUNSWICK - In March, East Brunswick High School will hear its last "Go Bears!" cheer from Principal Michael Vinella, who is retiring from the school district after nearly 30 years.

The Board of Education has accepted Vinella's early retirement effective March 1, Superintendent of Schools Victor Valeski said.

"The search for our new high school principal will begin immediately," Valeski said. "East Brunswick Public Schools is appreciative of Dr. Vinella’s work and his contributions to the high school and district. We wish him well in his future endeavors."

Vinella is not resting on his laurels. He has accepted a position with the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) as director of membership services. His new job begins in March.

"I am sad to leave because I loved East Brunswick," said Vinella, a Hunterdon County resident. "The high school is just an amazing place with amazing people. But these opportunities don't come along often. And I have a lot of respect for the people in NJPSA and what they do. It's going to provide me with an opportunity. In the district, I was able to touch many people here and maybe this opportunity will enable me to touch principals and supervisors from all over the state − to be a support for them."

A past president of the NJPSA, Vinella was the 2020 NJPSA/FEA Visionary Principal of the Year for secondary schools. That year, he also was named the 2020 National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) New Jersey Principal of the Year.

With the NJPSA, Vinella also held the posts of field representative, Board of Directors member, and has been a mentor for more than six years.

Principal at the high school since August 2012, Vinella rose through the ranks in the district. He first came to the township in 1995 as a ninth-grade social studies teacher at Churchill Junior High School before moving to the high school in 2000. At the Junior High, Vinella also coached football and wrestling.

After three years of teaching at the high school, Vinella became assistant principal in 2003.

In 2006, Vinella took on the district post of K-12 supervisor of staff development, testing and grants for a year and then K-12 curriculum supervisor of social studies/media in 2007. He remained curriculum supervisor for five years.

For Vinella, it was never about the "job," but about the students.

"To watch the kids grow and excel in the classroom, on the athletic field or in the arts − that's what it always was about," Vinella said. "And I'm proud that I worked for a bunch of fantastic teachers and administrators that always brought it every day for the kids and did what was best for the kids. That's what I'm most proud about − because I think the best thing is all the kids that graduated from there that went on and did great things. That's what makes our job so special."

Vinella believes under his tenure, he and his staff were able to "live the mission" − "excellence in academic, athletics and the arts."

"I think we truly did." Vinella said. "I wouldn't have gotten those accolades if it wasn't for the fantastic staff, the teachers, the support staff, the others administrators. That was based on the collective effort of everybody."

Since September, Vinella has also been the NASSP state coordinator and has been an NJSIAA executive committee member since June.

A graduate of Rutgers University, Kean University and Walden University, Vinella has been an adjunct professor at both Walden University and Rider University.

Though he believes the district and his staff were caught "off guard" by the news of his early retirement, Vinella has told the district's Central Office that he is willing to do whatever he can to help for a smooth and successful transition.

"Before March and even after March, I'm going to be able to work with whoever's there to help them so they can continue what they're doing for the kids," Vinella said. "I wasn't expected something like this, but this opportunity came along. And it wasn't an easy decision. But, you know, my wife and I made the decision to do it, maybe retire a little bit younger than I originally thought, but I think it caught people off guard to say the least."
