SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- It takes a village to help children have a Merry Christmas and that's what is happening a North Carolina town.
The community is coming together to make kids' holiday wishes come true. The outpouring of support began a couple of weeks ago after organizers with Lee County's Toys for Tots realized they didn't have enough toys for the kids.
What did they do?
They didn't panic, but instead enlisted the help of two famous North Carolina musicians and songwriters--Taylor Phillips and Britton Buchanan.
And Phillips and Buchanan understood their assignment. Both started spreading the word of the need among fans.
ABC11 was at the Walmart in Sanford on Wednesday night, where toys are being collected.
Phillips and Buchanan even went a step further and put together a concert for Thursday night. People can attend for free if they bring and donate two toys at the entrance. The concert is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Lee County High School on Nash Street in Sanford.
Phillips was also at the Walmart and says he was happy to use his fame to help.
"If you got an opportunity to give back and just do it. There's nothing better than knowing that some kid's going to wake up and feel the magic of Christmas, and that's what it's all about."
Deputy Chief William Sturkie, with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, is elated that the two are doing all of this for the kids in the county.
"Look at concert prices these days. A lot of them, you know, have really gone up and these guys put all that aside and said, "We're doing it for the cause. And, you know, people, again, are showing up in big.
Lee County Toys for Tots Coordinator, Linda Missimer, says it was great to see all the people coming together to help.
"Some days it really is hard, but then they come out, and they start helping you, and you just realize the people of Sanford are great people."
Lee County's Toys for Tots so they're now on track to meet their holiday goal.
Phillips has written popular country songs, including Hurricane for Luke Combs and Britton was also a runner-up on 'The Voice' a few seasons ago.
