An Elise Middle School teacher was arrested on Thursday and is facing four counts of felony sex offense with a student at a high school in Yanceyville, N.C., from 19 years ago.
Sixty-year-old Dennis Bannick, of Robbins, was arrested at Dollar General at 120 Highway 705 in Robbins by the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office. Caswell County is located in the Piedmont Triad region, bordering Virginia.
“At the time of this offense, the defendant was a teacher at Bartlett Yancey High School, and the victim was a student at this same school,” said the arrest warrant about the alleged crimes that allegedly occurred on Aug. 1, 2006, and Oct. 1, 2006.
According to Moore County Schools’ website, Bannick is a physical education and health teacher at Elise Middle School in Robbins. He is also an assistant football coach at North Moore High School.
The school district sent a statement to Sandhills Sentinel regarding the arrest.
“On August 28, Moore County Schools was notified that one of our employees had been arrested by the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office in Robbins, NC, shortly after school dismissal,” said Moore County Schools Director for Communications Charlie Batchelor.
“This morning, we learned that the individual has been charged with four counts of child sexual assault, alleged to have occurred in Yanceyville, NC. Based on current information, these charges do not involve any Moore County Schools students. While charges are allegations and not convictions, we are deeply troubled by this news. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority.
“To support our school communities, counselors are available at Elise Middle School and North Moore High School to provide assistance to students and staff who may need it.”
The suspect’s secured bond was set at $75,000.
