Environmental officials are monitoring Dallas’ White Rock Lake days after 1.5 million gallons of raw sewage spilled into nearby water from Plano.
Dallas city officials will assess the water from White Rock spillway to Frankford Road through Friday, said city spokesperson Brenda Saldana, who did not answer questions regarding results of tests performed so far.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which is responsible for overseeing such incidents, said Tuesday it is investigating the spill. It is not yet clear whether any fines will be levied.
The spill began about 2:40 p.m. March 14 when the valve at a water lift station in Plano failed, flooding the station and shuttering mechanical equipment. Sewage then overflowed from three manholes near 5510 West Plano Parkway.

That sewage rushed into White Rock Creek, which feeds into White Rock Lake. Plano officials estimated roughly 500 gallons of sewage were flowing into the creek per minute. Shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday, about 38 hours later, the spill ended.

Plano spokesperson Steve Stoler said city tests performed Monday showed creek water returned to normal. Officials in neither Plano nor Dallas have seen evidence of damage to aquatic life.
“From our end, no additional monitoring or cleanup is needed,” Stoler said.
The water lift station, operated by the North Texas Municipal Water District, has resumed operations with some temporary pumping in place. Final repairs to the lift station — which moves wastewater to a higher elevation on its way to a treatment plant — could take up to two weeks, district spokesperson Alex Johnson said.
It is not clear how much sewage made its way from Plano to Dallas. To dilute the wastewater, Plano added dechlorination tablets and flushed the creek with water, TCEQ spokesperson Victoria Cann said.
Still, the spill prompted at least one group to revise its plans. The Corinthian Sailing Club moved its annual sailboat regatta from White Rock Lake to Lake Ray Hubbard over the weekend after it was notified of the spill.
“I would not want to fall in that water,” the club’s commodore Ralph Jones told The Dallas Morning News on Monday.
This is not the first time untreated sewage has flowed from Plano into White Rock Creek.
More than 320,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the creek after a severe storm in November 2021 downed a tree, which fell on an aerial sewage line.
And in June 2018, a ruptured wastewater pipe in Plano dumped 1 million gallons of raw sewage into the creek, forcing Dallas to suspend all recreational activities at White Rock Lake.

On Friday, Jan.5, the famous bald eagles were spotted in trees, circling the White Rock area from the lake down the Trinity to Loop 12, said Christopher Morris, Sr. Environmental Coordinator/Urban Biologist.
It appears the eagles haven’t yet settled on a spot and are sampling the area before nestling into their temporary home, he adds.
“It looks like they have decided on one of the old red tail hawk nests that was in a sycamore tree. They decided since it worked so well for the hawks that they would start building on it,” Morris said.
It wasn’t until around Jan. 15, that many of the surrounding residents began noticing an increase in eagle activity right up the sycamore tree.
A few days later, from Jan. 22 to the 26, the city noticed a significant presence of eagles and began sectioning off the area to protect the birds from any disturbances, as they had done in previous years.
Many birds in North America are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, not to mention Bald Eagles are also the nation’s birds. Therefore, the city must assist them by sectioning off areas to aid in eagle nesting spots suitable for raising eaglets.
Suitable nesting spots are areas free from loud noises and activities that could disturb their nests.
Last year, the eagles began nesting near Sunset Bay; however, they quickly abandoned the area, the Advocate reported.

The spill already had one group revise its plans prior to the notice from Dallas officials, with the Corinthian Sailing Club moving its annual sailboat regatta from White Rock Lake to Lake Ray Hubbard over the weekend after it was notified of the spill.
“I would not want to fall in that water,” the club’s commodore Ralph Jones told The Dallas Morning News on Monday.
Untreated sewage has flowed from Plano into White Rock Creek in previous incidents. More than 320,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the creek after a severe storm in November 2021 downed a tree, which fell on an aerial sewage line.
In June 2018, a burst wastewater pipe in Plano sent 1 million gallons of raw sewage into the creek, prompting Dallas to suspend recreational activities at White Rock Lake.
With the most recent spill, Dallas’ park department said it would work with the city’s water utilities department to monitor water conditions and any treatments.
The department said Wednesday it will post updates about when the water-related activities can resume at DallasParks.org and on department social media accounts.

It looked like the matchup was going to play out on the field just as on paper with the Falcons seemingly dead and buried down 12 with under three minutes to go.
However, Lake Dallas quickly flipped that narrative on its head. Falcons safety Jalen Brooks came up with a huge interception, which led to a 14-yard touchdown pass from Cade Bortnem to Sam McAfee to make it 35-30.
Then after Lake Dallas recovered an onside kick, Bortnem and the Falcon offense rose to the occasion again. He found Keonde Henry for the game-winning score with just 18 seconds to go as Lake Dallas scored the final 13 points in a huge 36-35 win.

Bortnem finished with 190 passing yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions, while Henry led the receiving corps with seven catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
The comeback had a big implication of the district standings as Lake Dallas now sits tied for second place, one spot ahead of Emerson. The Falcons will look to secure that second place spot with wins over Frisco Independence and Denton, who is the other team currently tied for second, the last two weeks of the regular season.
