Helen Reyes’ winning artwork for the 39th Annual California Strawberry Festival was revealed at an April 1 gathering of dignitaries and festival sponsors at Yolanda’s Mexican Café in Oxnard. The luncheon officially kicks off activities for the 2025 festival celebration taking place May 17 and 18 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
Reyes takes home a $2,000 grand prize and VIP tickets to the festival.
Entries were evaluated by a judging panel looking for creativity and the best use of a strawberry design. “Helen’s artwork perfectly captures the vibe of the seaside festival,” says Dean Kato, California Strawberry Festival board chair. “Her design will be on the festival poster, in our marketing campaign and on festival merchandise.”
Reyes, 27 and an Azusa resident, studied illustration at the Cal State University, Fullerton. “Since the festival is so close to the beach, I thought, wouldn’t it be a cool idea to have a strawberry on a surfboard?’,” says Reyes. She says it took about three weeks of sketching the design and choosing the right colors until it was complete.
This is the second time she entered the festival’s art contest. She attended the festival for the first time last year. “I absolutely love strawberries, especially strawberry ice cream and strawberry shortcake,” says Reyes, who has won art contests in high school and college. “I’m honored and grateful that the festival selected my design. I was in complete shock when I received the news.”
Strawberry-themed nachos, chocolate-dipped strawberries, strawberry funnel cakes, strawberry kabobs, popcorn, and margaritas are just a few of the tasty choices available at the festival. Freshly picked, locally-grown strawberries are used by vendors in their foods.
The festival also features 150 artists and crafters, a Strawberryland for kids, live entertainment on three stages, carnival rides, and a "build-your-own" strawberry shortcake experience.
Festival hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. both days. General admission is $15, active military with ID and family and seniors 62 and over, $10, youth ages 5 to 12, $8, and children 4 and under are free.
Visitors are encouraged to use the free shuttle service at seven nearby locations. The Ventura Amtrak Station is across the street from the fairgrounds so visitors can ride Amtrak and MetroLink for easy access to the festival. For more information, go to www.CAStrawberryFestival.org.

Monday was momentous for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing although it still looked like a bridge to nowhere from the 101 Freeway, where more than 300,000 vehicles stream endlessly every day.
Nearly three years after the project began, the critical milestone was visible only to the government officials, scientists and longtime supporters who climbed to the top: soil.
And not just any soil. Over the next few days they’ll be adding 6,000 cubic yards of specially manufactured soil to cover the crossing, a mix of sand, silt and clay inoculated with a bit of compost and hyperlocal mycorrhizal fungi, carefully designed and tested to mimic the biological makeup of native soils around the site.
Adding soil is a big deal because it means we’re nearing the end of Stage 1, when the top is seeded and then planted with native shrubs and perennials, work that should be completed this summer, said Robert Rock, chief executive of Chicago-based Rock Design Associates and the landscape architect overseeing the project.
But we’re still a ways from completion, now scheduled for the end of 2026, about a year later than initially planned due to delays from the heavy rains in 2022 and 2023.
Stage 2, the final phase, will connect the structure to the hills at the north and south so that wildlife, like L.A.’s famous, ill-fated cougar, P-22, can use it. That stage will start with burying utility lines along a section of Agoura Road, south of the crossing, and moving water lines for recycled water used for irrigation.

They’ll also be keeping a sharp eye open for invasives that could crowd out the newly planted native plants, aggressive plants such as black mustard, which is already sprouting lushly along the southern border of the corridor. Black mustard grows quickly and will soon be sending out seeds that could easily invade the pristine soil on the structure.
But in this matter, the builders of the world’s largest wildlife corridor are in the same boat as gardeners everywhere. “We’ll just have to weed it until the [native] plants get established,” he said. “The sad reality is there is very little else we can do.”

Officials described Monday's work as a milestone, resulting in years of meticulous work. The effort required close collaboration with soil scientists, biologists, engineers and mycologists who selected the best soil and beneficial fungi for the bridge.
After the soil is placed, the next leg of work is expected to be done in May, which includes planting about 5,000 native plants that will grow into a habitat for mountain lions, deer, bats, desert cottontails, bobcats, native birds and monarch butterflies, among others.
According to the NWF, coastal sage scrub plant species native to the Santa Monica Mountains will fill much of the bridge. It's part of a broader ecological restoration strategy that will revitalize an additional 12 acres of open space that requires 50,000 native plants, trees, shrubs and perennials.
Over the last three years, the wildlife crossing's dedicated native plant nursery has hand-picked more than 1.1. million hyper-local native seeds, representing more than 50 distinct native plant species in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Nursery staff have also started growing plants and tree species such as coast live oak trees, valley oak, toyon, ceanothus, several sages, California buckwheat and the flowering penstemon, among others.
Native vegetation will help reduce fire risk and better support wildlife. Crews are expected to implement a full irrigation and sprinkler system as part of the crossing.
The nursery is overseen by the landscape architecture company, Rock Design Associates, with aid from experts from the Santa Monica Mountains Fund, the National Park Service, Caltrans, and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.
