Home Care Chalfont, PA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Pearl S. Buck National Historic Landmark gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Chalfont, PA is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“Ken Good was a life saver in helping us find a CCRC in Doylestown, PA for my brother in law, PP. We had 5 days notice that he could no longer stay at the rehab center. Within 24 hours, Ken sent an e-mail identifying facilities whom he had spoken to including 6 that would most likely PP given his limited assets in addition to those that would not and those who had not returned his call. These recommendations were updated daily. I don't know what we would have done but for Ken's knowledge, accessibility and obvious respect from so many facilities that promptly returned his call . Because of Ken's quick and accurate recommendations, PP was accepted to a Personal Care facility that meets his needs perfectly. We highly recommend Ken Good and Always Best Care Senior Services”

“My beloved dad recently passed away after losing his battle with cancer. During his last months, he was lucky enough to have had Claire as his caregiver and friend. I firmly believe that Claire extended my dad’s life because of the love, laughter, compassion, silliness and extraordinary level of CARE she gave my dad - and she made him feel alive more than he had in a very long time. She was so good with him and he enjoyed his time with her so much that he actually forgot he was sick when she was around. They became forever friends, even though "forever" didn’t last long enough. From the very first day that I contacted Always Best Care of Upper BuxMont/Doylestown to arrange home care for my dad, I was met with an impressive and unexpected level of kindness, understanding and humanity. The owners, along with their team, felt like part of my family - which sounds strange I suppose, but there’s really no better way to describe it. This is not your typical caregiving agency, that’s for sure! I will forever be grateful to all of these wonderful people for how well they treated my dad.”

“My elderly mother and I could not ask for better care! This is the 4th "agency" we've worked with, but Always Best Care is not an agency; they are more like family because they treat you like a family member. Ken and Rebecca are 100% honest & sincere in every aspect. I have never worked with more knowledgeable, caring people. Everyone communicates exceptionally; if there is a change or if someone runs late, you are notified right away (and those things don't happen often). With regard to caregivers, again they are exceptional, and like family. My loved one can be very challenging but they handle every situation with great care & commitment. I could not have survived the last few years without the care of two ladies in particular - they cared for my mother better than other family members did! Always Best Care is 100% responsive; you do not have to wait to hear from them or place a follow-up call. If the answer is not immediate, they will absolutely get back to you within hours. Always Best Care adapted to the Covid-19 issues seamlessly; no care was interrupted, and the utmost safety precautions were always in place. Always Best Care was able to help my mother keep her independence for as long as possible. They always treated my mother with respect and were always thoughtful of her dignity. Their business is appropriately named!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Chalfont, PA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local 1720 Bar & Restaurant or visit Washington Crossing Historic Park, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Chalfont, PA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Chalfont, PA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your PA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Chalfont, PA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Chalfont, PA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Chalfont, PA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care

Barstool Sports and One Bite Pizza founder David Portnoy may have inadvertently kicked off the Bucks County pizza craze with his visits to two local pizza joints.

On the heels of visiting Lucatelli's Pizzeria in Doylestown, Portnoy took his "One Bite" critique to Peppino's Tomato Pies and South Philly-style Sandwiches in Chalfont.

Here's what Portnoy thought of Peppino's tomato pie, and how his visits have impacted the local shops.

El Presidente grades Peppino's tomato pie

Portnoy, who has branded himself "El Presidente," grabbed a tomato pie from Peppino's, at 449 West Butler Avenue, for his "One Bite" review.

"Super nice guys in there; lots of people getting the cheesesteaks and grinders and things like that, but we're here for the pizza," Portnoy said in the opener. "We got a tomato-style with the tomato on top, and it's nice and thin. I generally love the tomato style because it's so crunchy, usually.

"This one doesn't look like it's going be wildly crunchy to me," Portnoy continued in his review. "It has good undercarriage with a little bit of flop."

After taking several minutes to let the pizza cool and filing the time by comparing himself to Brad Pitt, Portnoy continued with the review of Peppino's tomato pie.

"I really like it. It's a little messy; 7.8," Portnoy said of his final ranking of Peppino's tomato pie. "I think it's really good, and I'd come back. It's a little sloppy, but I really do like it, and I like tomato pies."

For reference, Portnoy, said and his camera crew mentioned that Peppino's received a score of 8.3 on the One Bite website and app.

Dave Portnoy's visits to Bucks County pizzerias sets off frenzy, creates long lines

Portnoy's visit to Peppino's comes just a few days after stopping by Lucatelli's Pizzeria.

'El Presidente' rates Lucatelli's pies:Barstool Sports' David Portnoy visits Doylestown, rates Lucatelli's Pizzeria for 'One Bite'

And Portnoy's visits have been a boom for business at the two pizzerias, although some customers have grumbled online about the long lines created by Portnoy's reviews. Lucatelli's thanked all who stopped in, apologized for delays and said they put in some new processes to help everyone get their pizzas.

They sold out again Sunday, but said they would be ready to open Monday.

In the Chalfont, PA Community Group on Facebook, one poster summed up the situation.

"Same thing happened to the pizzeria he reviewed in Doylestown. And it made people, who didn't know why the service was so slow, so mad that they were posted awful reviews online," the post's author noted. "Blessing and a curse that Dave made the rounds around here."

Still, the owners of Peppino's were thrilled with the extra foot traffic.

"We opened yesterday to a line out the door!" read one post from Peppino's on Facebook, while another post apologized for running out of stock.

"Sorry guys! We ran out of dough for pizza," read a portion of Peppino's post. "Closing an hour early…we are restocking and will be open tomorrow! Thank you for your patience with us as we navigate this new volume."

'El Presidente' turns Barstool Sports, One Bite Pizza into viral trends

Portnoy founded Barstool Sports in 2004, after a stint at an IT firm. Portnoy originally intended for Barstool Sports to be a newspaper and cultivated the brash "El Presidente" character, who would write most of Barstool Sports' content at the time.

In its current iteration, Barstool Sports is a launching site for sports, trending culture and commentary.

Portnoy is also a die-hard pizza fan who has reviewed dozens of pizza spots nationwide as part of his "One Bite Reviews," which can be viewed on his website or YouTube.

On Monday, July 10, John Paul Reis, 56, of Newtown Township, owner of Chalfont Collision Center, was sentenced to 84 months of restrictive probation. Reis will be confined to home for the first four months. He’ll have to wear an electronic monitor to make sure he remains at home.

Reis was also ordered to repay more than $435,000 to five insurance companies that he defrauded by submitting nearly 300 fake insurance claims over eight years.

Reis was charged in August of 2022 with insurance fraud, deceptive business practices, forgery and theft by deception. All charges were third-degree felonies.

In March, Reis entered an open guilty plea to the charges. In that type of plea, defendants plead guilty and agree to accept a sentence decided solely by the judge. The plea is often entered when prosecutors argue for a tough sentence that the defendant thinks is too harsh.

The charges came after a four-year investigation by the district attorney office’s fraud unit that began in September of 2018. An insurance company told the office that the collision center was “enhancing and/or creating damage” to customers’ cars to inflate insurance estimates.

Investigators said the Reis would wipe a mixture onto the bodies of vehicles to damage them. They said Reis would also strike some vehicles with a hammer to make them look like they had been in an accident.

Investigators said that because Chalfont Collision Center was a direct repair center for Erie Insurance and other insurers, it was given authorization to write estimates, complete repairs and submit estimates and bills. That sped up the repair process for customers, but it also made it easier to falsify claims.

The investigation concluded that as part of the fraud, Reis sent 189 claims to Liberty Mutual Insurance totaling more than $312,000.

DOYLESTOWN, PA—The owner of a Chalfont body shop has been charged with filing more than 300 fake insurance claims over several years worth more than $400,000.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office charged John Paul Reis, 56, owner of Chalfont Collision Center, with insurance fraud, deceptive business practices, forgery and theft by deception. All the charges are third-degree felonies.

The DA said that Reis had charged four insurance companies for fake claims worth $426,000.

The charges come on the heels of a four-year investigation by the district attorney office’s fraud unit that began in September of 2018. The office received a referral from the special investigations unit of Erie Insurance that said the collision center was “enhancing and/or creating damage” to customers’ cars to inflate insurance estimates.

Investigators allege that Reis came up with a scheme to wipe a mixture onto the bodies of several vehicles to damage them. They also allege that Reis would strike vehicles with a hammer to make them appear to have been in an accident.

Investigators said that because Chalfont Collision Center was a direct repair center for Erie Insurance and other insurers, it was given authorization to write estimates, complete repairs and submit estimates and bills, all of which speeds up the repair process for customers.

Investigators contacted other insurance companies that worked with Chalfont Collision. Erie and three other insurers identified a total of 289 estimates submitted between 2014 and 2022 that were for legitimate repair jobs but also contained artificial or inflated damages.

Investigators said that 189 of the false claims were billed to Liberty Mutual Insurance for a total of more than $312,000.

Investigators executed a search warrant to seize evidence including photographs, files and computers in March of 2022.

Reis, who lives in Newtown, turned himself in on Thursday, Aug. 25. He was arraigned and unsecured bail was set at $150,000.

It all started innocently enough. Phil Haile was 5 years old when his father bought him his first Lionel model train. Each year, the family made space in their dining room for a large Christmas tree and a train platform. Haile continued to receive trains as gifts, and at age 12, he made an important announcement to his family: “I’m going to collect model trains for the rest of my life.”

More than 60 years later, Haile, now 76, may finally be losing steam. The home he has shared with his wife of more than 50 years — which includes space for thousands of trains — is becoming a challenge for the retired couple with growing health issues. It might be time to downsize, said Haile, who is looking for a buyer for the trains.

“It’s just getting to be too much,” he said.

Phil has had shoulder and hip replacement. His wife, Carol, has to climb very carefully on the train platforms to dust. She recently started using a cane while she was up there.

“If you fall," he said, “you’ll wipe out a whole city block.”

Both teachers in the Council Rock School District, Phil and Carol found their three-bedroom, 1,700-square-foot Cape Cod in Chalfont through word of mouth.

“Everything was painted green, that ugly horrible green," Carol said. But "we both said, ‘we’ll take it.’”

The house seemed huge compared with their first apartment together in Holland. With Carol pregnant with their second child, the couple, then in their mid-20s, slowly started making the house their own.

They refinished the hardwood floors, added a first-floor bathroom, and installed a picture window in the dining room. The first addition to the home was the family room, where they still spend most of their time. Each time, Phil gathered estimates but ended up hiring friends and family to do the work to save money. When the couple’s sons were teenagers, they built a back patio out of stone.

Then there were the trains.

“After we found the house," Phil said, “the first thing I checked was the basement to see if I could put in a platform.”

He started with a 4-by-8 plywood sheet. A year later, he added another one. By the third year, he and his wife had to have a chat.

“I’m having a hard time getting to the washing machine,” Carol remembers saying. “This is all the stuff you don’t read in the fine print.”

Running out of space for the trains, they started on the first of two additions to the garage. “1981 was when we started building the empire,” Phil said.

It took two years to finish the construction of the second garage addition and another two years to finish the train platforms. This time, Phil’s brother-in-law, an engineer, helped him; sometimes they worked together from 6 a.m. until midnight.

“When he did things, he did it right the first time,” Phil said.

After Phil was featured in O Gauge Railroading magazine and a national convention of the Train Collectors Association was held in New Jersey, busloads came to see his trains.

“That’s when all hell broke loose,” Phil said.

The walls of the now 1,500-square-foot garage are decorated with original SEPTA signs, a caboose lamp, several framed articles, and countless thank you cards. The train scene, which stretches 5-feet high, is a mix of new and old, some a tribute to local establishments, such as the original Doylestown Hospital and Chalfont Hardware. Phil added a Phillies stadium in 2008 after the team won the World Series.

“I may have missed my window to build a tribute to the Eagles,” he said.

Peppered throughout the scene are hints of the couple’s life together.

There is a replica of Glen Burn Colliery in Shamokin, where Phil grew up in Central Pennsylvania, and several references to the Mann Sausage Co., their son’s company in Virginia, as well as Hagey buses, the kind he used to take his eighth graders on a field trip to Williamsburg back in the day.

New this year, Phil added a post office, a Budweiser Brewery, a Wegmans, and 40 miniature oak trees. Children love the roller coaster, part of a tribute to Knoebels, where Phil worked for 12 summers as a young man.

Phil estimates that more than 40,000 people have visited his garage in the last 10 years. One visitor means the most to him.

“I got a call from a woman who said, ‘My husband is dying of cancer. He loves trains, but he hasn’t been able to put them up,’” Phil said. “After the couple visited, his wife told me, ‘Yesterday was the first day he smiled in two years.’”

Despite the work — and the higher electric bills — the Hailes would do it all again.

“We’ve met so many wonderful people,” he said.

The train display is open to the public — by appointment — from Dec. 1 to Feb. 9. Admission is free; donations are accepted. For information, call 215-822-9549.

There are many fantastic Christmas destinations in Pennsylvania, but few are open year-round for those looking for festive fun in any month. However, the Byers’ Choice Christmas Museum in Bucks County is one of the few that is.

Byers Choice is most well known for its line of Byers’ Carolers. These whimsical dolls are the creation of Joyce Byers.

In the 1960s, she began to handcraft Carolers, first for her own home and later for family and friends. Finally, at the urging of her family, she started selling her Byers’ Carolers in a few stores.

Today, the Carolers are sold in stores throughout the United States and around the world, and the company employs 50 artisans who still handmake these holiday decorations from their factory in Chalfont, Pennsylvania.

Having seen the Byers’ Carolers for many years in my parent’s holiday decorations, I was excited to visit their museum and factory near Doylestown, PA.

From the outside, the Byers’ Choice building is relatively non-descript, save for a few decorations that were lining the road on the way in. Inside, the building houses the company’s offices, their factory, a store, and a museum.

Despite the outside looking rather plain, walking through the doors of the building was like stepping back into a Dickensian-era world.

Heading straight takes you into a large store that sells many Byers’ Carolers and other holiday knick-knacks. However, we opted to start our visit to the right.

Here, my family and I found a Victorian-era streetscape that has been incredibly recreated with a lot of attention to detail.

The first area to check out is a theater that shows a short video about the history of Byers’ Choice. The video provides a lot of great information but is definitely showing its age.

Further down the Victorian streetscape, there is a clothing shop filled with prop clothing you can try on so that you can look just like a Byers’ Caroler. My young son had a lot of fun trying on the different clothing here.

The museum itself is really neat and features a set of large dioramas that each feature dozens or even hundreds of Carolers in various settings. All told, there are eight large rooms with these displays, each themed around a different subject.

My children really enjoyed seeing the different scenes and noticing the many intricate details in each of the dioramas. Of course, these displays aren’t just for children. In fact, anyone that likes Byers’ Carolers will no doubt appreciate these displays and might even take a few ideas home for how to display their own collection.

Within the museum, there is also a platform that allows visitors to get an overview of the factory floor.

From this observation deck, you can see a large chunk of the Byers’ Choice factory. Directly below the windows, there were several artisans working on assembling the Carolers, which was really neat to see. Sadly, photos were not allowed in this part of the museum.

Note, that the workers here don’t work on weekends, so its best to visit on a weekday, if possible.

In the room next to the observation deck, don’t miss the small display case that features the three original Byers’ Carolers made in the 1960s. It’s amazing to see how far they have come over the years.

The museum also features a room that displays more than 200 nativity sets from around the world. These range in size, age, and style, but it’s really interesting to see how many different cultures interpret this event. Don’t miss the large nativity set that was hand-carved in Naples, Italy in the 1780s.

Overall, I really had a great time visiting the Byers’ Choice Christmas Museum. Even as someone who only has a passing interest in their Carolers, I enjoyed seeing the many dioramas and watching the workers craft them in the factory.

However, if you are a collector of these popular Christmas decorations, you are sure to have a fantastic time browsing this amazing holiday museum no matter the season.
