They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Perkasie Trolley Tunnel gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Perkasie, PA is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“Ken Good was a life saver in helping us find a CCRC in Doylestown, PA for my brother in law, PP. We had 5 days notice that he could no longer stay at the rehab center. Within 24 hours, Ken sent an e-mail identifying facilities whom he had spoken to including 6 that would most likely PP given his limited assets in addition to those that would not and those who had not returned his call. These recommendations were updated daily. I don't know what we would have done but for Ken's knowledge, accessibility and obvious respect from so many facilities that promptly returned his call . Because of Ken's quick and accurate recommendations, PP was accepted to a Personal Care facility that meets his needs perfectly. We highly recommend Ken Good and Always Best Care Senior Services”

“My beloved dad recently passed away after losing his battle with cancer. During his last months, he was lucky enough to have had Claire as his caregiver and friend. I firmly believe that Claire extended my dad’s life because of the love, laughter, compassion, silliness and extraordinary level of CARE she gave my dad - and she made him feel alive more than he had in a very long time. She was so good with him and he enjoyed his time with her so much that he actually forgot he was sick when she was around. They became forever friends, even though "forever" didn’t last long enough. From the very first day that I contacted Always Best Care of Upper BuxMont/Doylestown to arrange home care for my dad, I was met with an impressive and unexpected level of kindness, understanding and humanity. The owners, along with their team, felt like part of my family - which sounds strange I suppose, but there’s really no better way to describe it. This is not your typical caregiving agency, that’s for sure! I will forever be grateful to all of these wonderful people for how well they treated my dad.”

“My elderly mother and I could not ask for better care! This is the 4th "agency" we've worked with, but Always Best Care is not an agency; they are more like family because they treat you like a family member. Ken and Rebecca are 100% honest & sincere in every aspect. I have never worked with more knowledgeable, caring people. Everyone communicates exceptionally; if there is a change or if someone runs late, you are notified right away (and those things don't happen often). With regard to caregivers, again they are exceptional, and like family. My loved one can be very challenging but they handle every situation with great care & commitment. I could not have survived the last few years without the care of two ladies in particular - they cared for my mother better than other family members did! Always Best Care is 100% responsive; you do not have to wait to hear from them or place a follow-up call. If the answer is not immediate, they will absolutely get back to you within hours. Always Best Care adapted to the Covid-19 issues seamlessly; no care was interrupted, and the utmost safety precautions were always in place. Always Best Care was able to help my mother keep her independence for as long as possible. They always treated my mother with respect and were always thoughtful of her dignity. Their business is appropriately named!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Perkasie, PA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Maize Restaurant or visit South Perkasie Covered Bridge, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Perkasie, PA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Perkasie, PA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your PA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Perkasie, PA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Perkasie, PA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Perkasie, PA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Perkasie, PA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Hidden Meadows On the Ridge
  • The Community at Rockhill

  • Souderton Mennonite Homes - Living Branches Senior Living Community
  • Paradise Manor
  • Tri-County Respite

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A home improvement contractor is now permanently banned from working in Pennsylvania.

He has also been ordered to pay restitution to some of his customers. The court order comes after a years-long Troubleshooters investigation.

The Troubleshooters began investigating Ray Cedar seven years ago, and now a court has taken these extreme actions to protect future consumers.

"It's just unbelievable. I just can't believe he is driving around advertising and doing work for other people," said Dave Clark of Langhorne, Pennsylvania in August 2022.

Clark is talking about Cedar, who's operated under a lot of different business names and across state lines first in New Jersey and then in Pennsylvania.

"I just want no one else to have to go through this," said Lisa Triolo of Perkasie, Pennsylvania.

Customers accused him of doing shoddy work and failing to finish the job. After the Troubleshooters brought the complaints to the attention of the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, it sued Cedar. The goal was to prevent him from ever operating as a contractor in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Now the court has issued a default judgment and final decree, taking permanent action against Cedar.

"He can't register as a contractor in the future. He can't perform home improvement work in the future," said Pa. Deputy Attorney General Sarah Frasch.

He is also ordered to pay nearly $85,000 in restitution to his customers and penalties.

We reached out to Cedar for a response to the court order. He told us, "no comment."

Here's the takeaway for all consumers before you hire a home improvement contractor:

"We've not only trained the staff who handles our registrations, but all of our staff who handle any kind of customer inquiries," said Frasch.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office took that important action as a result of a Troubleshooters investigation. Do make sure you call or email to get detailed information on a registered contractor. The AG's office is still working on updating its website so consumers can get that information on their own.

PERKASIE, PA — Four skydiving women are taking to the sky today above Bucks County today in an attempt to break a Pennsylvania women’s skydiving record and raise money for charity.

The women, all from the Delaware Valley and members of Skydive Philadelphia, are taking consecutive skydives - 100 in one day - at the Pennridge Airport at 1300 School House Road. The community is invited to come out, enjoy some food and watch the record being broken.

Between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on July 18, the women - Kelly Teel, Sheryl Benner, Jordan Lynch and Risa Alfieri - are taking 25 lower altitude jumps today during a series of “Hop and Pops” from about 3500 feet.

“You basically hop in and you pop out,” said Teel of Sellersville, noting that a typical dive for the women is from 10,000 and 12,000 feet. The “Hop and Pop” eliminates the free fall part of the dive giving the skydivers more time to break the record.

“It’s a lot to do in a day,” admits Benner, whose previous high was 14 skydives in a day.

Find out what's happening in Doylestownwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

“It gets the adrenaline pumping,” adds Teel, whose previous high was eight jumps. “Before I was a mom I’d spend all day at the drop zone. I’d be jumping my heart out. So I would imagine that by the end of the day we’re going to be exhausted. But we’re going to have a great team behind us. We have people who will be packing our parachutes for us and our husbands will be there to support us. I’m ready for the challenge. And my kids are really excited as well.”

When Benner, of Quakertown, isn’t driving a tractor-trailer for UPS, she’s jumping out of airplanes. “It’s a hobby,” she said. “But I also do it competitively. Last year we won gold in advance with myself and my teammates. It’s a pretty awesome sport.”

For Teel, aka Skykitten, jumping out of airplanes is all about fun. The mother of two who works full time as a social worker said the sport offers rest and relaxation from a hectic schedule. Kelly now has about 1,500 skydives.

The women were motivated to action last year when a colleague from Skydive Philadelphia, Chris Howard, set the state record for the most consecutive jumps - 101 jumps. He raised money for Bucks4Kids which helps support foster children in the county.

“We took that idea and ran with it and wanted to do it again this year to benefit another charity,” said Teel.

The women chose Rest Connections as their charity. The Quakertown-based organization provides services to vulnerable and at-risk women, empowering them to achieve social and economic independence. Check them out at restconnection.org.

“We liked the connection of women setting the record and women empowering each other,” said Kelly. “We thought they would be a great organization to support.”

Donations can be made to the effort through its Venmo account and its GoFundMe page.

“Come out and cheer on the women while they set the record,” says a Facebook posting by Skydive Philadelphia. “Activities for the kids! There is limited seating so bring a blanket or chairs to stay and watch.”

Hundreds turn out to object to school board's social studies curriculum improvement plan.

PERKASIE, PA — The Pennridge School Board this week voted 5 to 4 to approve a controversial social studies curriculum improvement plan for the district's elementary school that some say promotes an extremist right-wing view of history.

On Monday night, hundreds packed the auditorium of the Pennridge High School to urge the board to vote down the curriculum plan, which was developed with assistance from Vermillion Education and its CEO, Jordan Adams.

Adams has become a lightning rod in the district's curriculum debate because of his background as a graduate and former employee of Hillsdale College, a conservative, Christian school in Michigan that created the 1776 curriculum plan. The 1776 curriculum plan has been accused of "whitewashing" American history by liberals.

Adams has said Vermilion Education has no ties to Hillsdale College.

Prior to the vote, board members sparred over the curriculum plan with one member calling it "partisan and political" and another saying it will allow students to become "critical thinkers."

"Typically our teachers and superintendent write the curriculum and bring it to us. Instead, this is curriculum written by an outsider with no experience in public education. On top of that our teachers and administrators are vehemently opposed to it," said board member Ronald Wurz. "The community is united against Vermillion and Mr. Adams on both sides of the aisle. We need to listen to our community.

"I hear over and over again how we want to remove bias from the curriculum. That is obviously a lie if we pass this tonight," said Wurz. "The Hillsdale College curriculum has not garnered any endorsements from any history, civics or educational professionals. It is important that we build our curriculum on a sound foundation rather than polarizing ideology ... Tonight we have an opportunity to change our school board to one that respects our community. Please do the right thing and vote no."

Board member Megan Banis-Clemens, who voted with the majority in favor of the curriculum change, said it was the administration who brought the request to update the social studies curriculum to the board two years ago. They were looking for a "consistent" curriculum across the district, she said. "We brought in Jordan Adams to help with that process," she said.

"There seems to be more comments about the person rather than the substance of the curriculum," she said during comments at the meeting. "Whether people like him or not, he is not the issue. The school code in Pennsylvania literally gives full authority to the school district on curriculum writing with the only requirement being that it covers the standards. He's qualified," she said. "And most of you who are complaining about his qualifications are saying the teachers should be writing the curriculum when the teachers don't have the qualifications that he has. He's also been director of curriculum elsewhere.

"A board member mentioned at the last meeting that we need to be teaching all perspectives and views. I disagree," she said. "We need to be teaching the facts and encouraging students to formulate their own views and think critically for themselves, not memorize a liberal or conservative perspective," she said. "We should be encouraging kids to dissect the information in all different ways and not memorize other people's takeaways."

Banis-Clemons said it's not "whitewashing American history" to have students draw conclusions on their own. "It's creating critical thinkers who will go on to solve the problems everyone else will miss," she said.

In a series of motions, the board approved a plan to incorporate the ninth grade curriculum into this upcoming school year and passed changes to the elementary curriculum, but postponed them until next year.

Will Pennsylvania Get a White Christmas?

Here in Pennsylvania, we are used to getting some snow. I’m not a fan of snow, at all, but as someone who has never lived down south, I suppose I’m used to it. Even though I’ll never liked the white stuff, I know a lot of people want a white Christmas. So, will Pennsylvania get a white Christmas? If you recall, last year, the Midwest and Northeast got snow around Christmas. It impacted my travel plans, and I ended up spending Christmas Eve alone watching cheesy Christmas movies. Don’t feel sorry for me, though, because I so enjoyed it and got to see family on Christmas Day.

Pennstakes.com has put out a study about the chance of getting a white Christmas in various areas around the U.S. As cited in a new survey from PennStakes.com, a whopping 59% of Americans are hoping for a white Christmas. As for methodology, according to the site, 3,000 Americans over 21 were polled between Oct. 31 and Nov. 3. They add, “Of those surveyed, 49% were male and 51% were female. The age breakdown of participants included in this survey was 20% in the range 21-34, 19% in the range 35-44, 19% in the range 44-54, 18% in the range 55-64, and 24% over 65+.”

So, will that dream be a reality? PennStakes.com looked at the years 1991 and 2020 and analyzed weather data from Climate.gov, showing how often each state has received at least 1 inch of snow on December 25, to find out the likelihood of a white Christmas. So, Pennsylvania get a white Christmas? According to their findings, 50% of people living in Pennsylvania want a white Christmas (not me). But, Pennsylvania only has a 34.1% chance of getting snow on Christmas. The state with the highest percentage of people who want to see a white Christmas is actually Kentucky at 77%. But, Kentucky only has a 6.6% chance of that being a reality. Sorry, Kentucky friends, but at least you have great bourbon.

Perkasie is known for its hometown charm, but did you know the borough has four different historic areas?

With a population of 9,129 people, Perkasie packs a lot of historic architecture and features into its 2.54 square miles. Many of its buildings were constructed between 1879 and 1971 as Perkasie expanded from 1,640 acres to more than 15,000 acres today. Here is a quick guide to those districts, including their most significant historic structures.

The privately owned camp meeting on Ninth Street is the only National Historic District in the borough. The land was used for Sunday School picnics and other events in the 1870s until the Perkasie Park Association bought the property in 1882.

Perkasie Park’s outdoor auditorium dates back to 1886 and it hosted everything from large camp meetings with thousands of people, to high school graduations and Memorial Day services. Today, it hosts religious services during the summer. Members of the association also own 60 Victorian cottages.

Perkasie Park hosts its annual Founders Day event each summer when the general public can tour the park’s grounds and go inside cottages.

In 2021, the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission (PHMC) said the original part of Perkasie and its neighboring sections were eligible to become a National Historic District. The district’s center, which has been called Olde Town in recent years, contained most of Perkasie during the 1880s and 1890s. The surrounding areas were added as the cigar and clothing industries became popular and Sell-Perk High School was built in the early 1930s.

This district has numerous buildings designed by architects Milton B. Bean and A. Oscar Martin.

Bean designed many classic brick Queen Anne homes that have “witches’ hat towers.” He also designed the beautiful Beidler mansion, now the home of several business, across from the Perkasie Fire Company. Martin worked in several styles and his buildings often have round windows, such as Perkasie’s first firehouse at Seventh and Arch streets.

Also of note is Perkasie’s collection of Victorian brick block houses built for local residents and factory workers. Many have facings of Rockhill granite. More than 85% of Perkasie Historic District buildings will be contributing properties to a National Historic District when Perkasie gets final approval of its application to the state in the near future.

In 2015, the PHMC determined that Lake Lenape Park also was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places because of “its association with the early 20th century movements to develop recreational and natural resources in Pennsylvania.” Perkasie and Sellersville own the 122-acre park, with Perkasie’s section on the park’s east side.

In the 1930s, local leaders joined with federal and county officials to buy the land to create a gift to “the children of the future.” The Works Progress Administration (or WPA) paid for the labor needed to refashion the Perkiomen Creek. The creek was dredged, and the fill used to build a man-made island with two Roebling suspension bridges.

Perkasie bought an additional 44 acres in the 1950s to host baseball fields, and the relocated South Perkasie Covered Bridge.

Today, Lenape Park hosts summer concerts and the popular Pennridge Community Day event each July, complete with fireworks, and it is heavily used as a recreational facility.

The PHMC also said in 2000 that parts of South Perkasie are eligible as a National Historic District. Route 152, or Walnut Street, dates back to the early 1800s when it was called the Philadelphia Road. By the 1840s, houses were built near the road, and the Bridgetown Hotel was added in the 1850s. (It is now the South Perkasie Hotel a.k.a. The Perk.) The Bridgetown-Perkasie Turnpike Company also owned Walnut Street for several decades.

Other historic buildings in South Perkasie include the Benfield Mill, St. Andrew’s UCC, the Third Ward School, and the former Royal Pants factory. Parts of the mill date back to the late 1820s, and St. Andrew’s is Perkasie’s oldest church. The schoolhouse, just up Main Street from The Perk, was designed by Oscar Martin. Royal Pants was Perkasie’s biggest employer and played a role in World War II as the Navy’s pants supplier. Today, the facility hosts Free Will Brewing and several other businesses.

Touring maps of the borough are available at the Perkasie Historical Society’s website at www.perkasiehistory.org.

Scott Bomboy is the chair of Perkasie Council’s Historical Committee, and he has written two books about Perkasie’s history.
