Home Care Dublin, PA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Old Dublin City Wall gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. “Ken Good was a life saver in helping us find a CCRC in Doylestown, PA for my brother in law, PP. We had 5 days notice that he could no longer stay at the rehab center. Within 24 hours, Ken sent an e-mail identifying facilities whom he had spoken to including 6 that would most likely PP given his limited assets in addition to those that would not and those who had not returned his call. These recommendations were updated daily. I don't know what we would have done but for Ken's knowledge, accessibility and obvious respect from so many facilities that promptly returned his call . Because of Ken's quick and accurate recommendations, PP was accepted to a Personal Care facility that meets his needs perfectly. We highly recommend Ken Good and Always Best Care Senior Services”

“My beloved dad recently passed away after losing his battle with cancer. During his last months, he was lucky enough to have had Claire as his caregiver and friend. I firmly believe that Claire extended my dad’s life because of the love, laughter, compassion, silliness and extraordinary level of CARE she gave my dad - and she made him feel alive more than he had in a very long time. She was so good with him and he enjoyed his time with her so much that he actually forgot he was sick when she was around. They became forever friends, even though "forever" didn’t last long enough. From the very first day that I contacted Always Best Care of Upper BuxMont/Doylestown to arrange home care for my dad, I was met with an impressive and unexpected level of kindness, understanding and humanity. The owners, along with their team, felt like part of my family - which sounds strange I suppose, but there’s really no better way to describe it. This is not your typical caregiving agency, that’s for sure! I will forever be grateful to all of these wonderful people for how well they treated my dad.”

“My elderly mother and I could not ask for better care! This is the 4th "agency" we've worked with, but Always Best Care is not an agency; they are more like family because they treat you like a family member. Ken and Rebecca are 100% honest & sincere in every aspect. I have never worked with more knowledgeable, caring people. Everyone communicates exceptionally; if there is a change or if someone runs late, you are notified right away (and those things don't happen often). With regard to caregivers, again they are exceptional, and like family. My loved one can be very challenging but they handle every situation with great care & commitment. I could not have survived the last few years without the care of two ladies in particular - they cared for my mother better than other family members did! Always Best Care is 100% responsive; you do not have to wait to hear from them or place a follow-up call. If the answer is not immediate, they will absolutely get back to you within hours. Always Best Care adapted to the Covid-19 issues seamlessly; no care was interrupted, and the utmost safety precautions were always in place. Always Best Care was able to help my mother keep her independence for as long as possible. They always treated my mother with respect and were always thoughtful of her dignity. Their business is appropriately named!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Dublin, PA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud or visit GPO Museum, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Dublin, PA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Dublin, PA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your PA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Dublin, PA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Dublin, PA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Dublin, PA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Dublin, PA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Newtownpark House Nursing Home & Retirement Accommodation
  • Beneavin House
  • Annabeg Nursing Home, South Dublin
  • Beechfield Manor Nursing Home
  • Altadore Retirement Nursing Home
  • Beneavin Lodge
Home Care Dublin, PA

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Some seniors are more proactive about transitioning to independent living. Others choose to remain home until their care needs or other requirements are satisfied. Remember - our staff is here to help. Contact our office today to learn more about assisted living communities and how we can find a facility that exceeds your expectations.

About 100 skeletal remains from the Middle Ages have been unearthed during excavations for a Northern Ireland firm's new hotel in Dublin.

Burial sites dating back more than 1,000 years were found at Capel Street where an abbey, St Mary's, once stood.

At least two of the remains are believed to date back to the early 11th Century.

The excavations have been commissioned by Beannchor, which is building its new Bullitt Dublin hotel on the site.

The abbey used by the Savigniac and Cistercian orders opened in the 12th Century.

Carbon dating of one of the discovered graves predates that by 100 years, indicating the presence of a Christian settlement on the site prior to St Mary's being built.

The archaeological investigations at the site, which formerly housed Boland's Bakery, also unearthed the foundations of buildings dating back to the 1600s.

The finds were discovered close to a former Presbyterian meeting house dating from 1667.

Parts of a domestic house known as the 'Dutch Billies' have also been found.

It was constructed in about 1700 by settlers who came to Dublin after William of Orange ascended to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1689.

Incorporated into design

While the skeletal remains will be painstakingly excavated, cleaned and sent for further analysis, before ultimately being given to the National Monuments Services, the other structures found during the examination of the site are set to be incorporated into the design of the new hotel complex.

Beannchor Group, which runs high-profile hotels and bars in Northern Ireland, has undertaken similar restoration of historic buildings in the past, including Belfast's Merchant Hotel, which was a former bank.

It said the Dublin project is by far its biggest and most complex project to date.

The 17th Century Presbyterian meeting house will be central to the development of a new bar and restaurant concept.

The 'Dutch Billies' house will also be preserved while a building with surviving ovens from the Boland's Bakery dating from 1890 will be renovated and repurposed.

Edmond O'Donovan, director of excavations for Courtney Deery Heritage Consultancy (CDHC, said St Mary's Abbey was Ireland's largest and most wealthy medieval abbey in its day.

"It was demolished after 1540 when the monastery was disbanded by Henry VIII and was later the site of a 17th Century Presbyterian meeting house.

"One of the things that was intriguing and exciting about the excavation is that we found an early burial or at least a number of burials that we suspect to be quite early.

"We have one that's carbon dated to the 11th Century and we have a second burial that was found with a diagnostic stick pin from the 11th Century.

"And that suggests that there was an earlier Christian and potentially monastic foundation here which predates the Savigniac and Cistercian Abbey."

Bill Wolsey, managing director of Beannchor, said it was impossible to have foreseen what the project would entail at its outset in 2017.

"As time went on, we began to understand just how complex this project may be," he said.

"Great care has been taken to preserve and incorporate elements of these early surviving buildings into the new development, on what we now know is one of the most significant heritage sites in the city."

The new Bullitt Dublin hotel is expected to open in 2025.

HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA —The 14 acres behind the Key Bank along the intersection of Norristown and Welsh roads is the subject of a planned public hearing before the Horsham Township Council.

At its April meeting, the council approved the introduction of an ordinance to change the zoning code on 726 Norristown Road that would allow for the construction of 53 townhomes near the township's border with Upper Dublin Township.

Developers Sal Paone and Goodman Properties need the zoning change for townhomes to be built. They were before the Horsham Planning Commission earlier this month.

The move has been met with resistance from nearby residents who formed the Horsham/Maple Glen Homeowners Against Rezoning Facebook page. Residents appeared at two council meetings last June and November to speak out about the development.

The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday in the Horsham Township Council chambers in the municipal complex on Horsham Road. A vote on the measure won't take place Monday night, township officials said.

Find out what's happening in Hatboro-Horshamwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The property is currently zoned R-3. The zoning currently permits 10 to 12 single-family homes on the property.

In a letter to residents who live near the property, township officials said a presentation and discussion are expected to take place at the public hearing.

The project is near the Norristown Road/Welsh Road/Limekiln Pike triangle which is notorious for traffic troubles.

While residents have argued about preserving open space, the developer has proposed upgrading the busy intersection where traffic continually backs up, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.

The intersection would be expanded to three lanes, with a through lane and right and left turn lanes with developers saying that traffic flow would be vastly improved.

The parcel sits across from an 18-acre tract on the Upper Dublin Township side that was cleared of its remaining trees destroyed when a tornado swept through the township in September 2021.

The same residents' group is concerned about development there as well. The land is also owned by Goodman Properties and borders the Maple Glen Triangle.

At that time, Upper Dublin Township officials told Patch that Goodman Properties would pay for various improvements such as sidewalks, road widening, and traffic intersection upgrades which are typical with development plans.

UWCHLAN >> Being down in the fourth quarter and needing late push is nothing new for the Downingtown East boys’ lacrosse squad. The Cougars went 3-1 during the regular season in one-goal games.

Good thing, because fifth-seeded East was pushed to the brink in round two of the District 1 3A Playoffs by No. 12 Upper Dublin Thursday. In fact the Cougars needed every ounce of experience to stage a near-miraculous 6-5 comeback victory, and avoid seeing their season come to a premature end.

“That’s a big part of our team, the ability to perform in the clutch,” said East’s goaltender Brady Quinn.

“We just stuck with it and kept playing,” said junior attacker Luke Fiorillo. “We were down 5-3, so it was concerning, but nobody panicked.”

Trailing by two midway through the final period after coming up empty on offense since all the way back in the first quarter, East appeared in big trouble. But somehow the Cougars scored three unanswered goals in the final 8:05.

“If there is one thing about our team it’s that we are not cardiac — we are very steady,” said East head coach Joe Horvath. “When the chips are down or up, we maintain a pretty steady heartbeat.

“We have a great defense and we trust them to get the ball back. And when we are patient on offense, good things happen.”

Coming off knee surgery last July, Fiorillo started the comeback — and ended a 30 minute scoring drought — with a goal after taking a pass from teammate Jake McMahon with just over eight minutes on the clock. And about three minutes later, senior Jake Woodworth tied the score at 5-5.

“Our offense was having a hard time getting to the net, but to be able to do it in the closing minutes with the game on the line is huge,” Quinn said.

Quinn then came up with a critical save at the 2:52 mark, and with about a minute left in regulation, Kolinsky forced a turnover near midfield.

“Bryson was able to force a ground ball, get it and we were able to get the timeout,” Horvath recalled.

The game winner came with 28.6 remaining, and once again it was Fiorillo finding the back of the net off a pass from Kolinsky.

“We try to balance our offense with multiple players, and Luke is a big part of that. He showed up in the fourth quarter for us and I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Horvath said.

“I scored five goals last season (in the playoffs) against Spring-Ford, but to get this one was one of the top experiences for me,” Fiorillo added.

“I’m about 10 months back from surgery and I’m just getting comfortable again being back on the field. Connor Sweeney and Taner Marusa are (injured), so we have a next-man-up mentality. And here I am.”

It was the Cougars’ 11th straight win and the squad is now 17-2 overall. They advance to the district quarterfinals on May 23rd where they will play the Spring-Ford/Garnet Valley winner.

“At this stage of the game, everybody’s good, you can’t take anything for granted, and you have to play hard from the first whistle to the last,” Horvath said.

The Cardinals season ends with a 13-6 mark. And Thursday’s outcome was deeply frustrating when you consider that it was the second time in the last three weeks that Upper Dublin’s dropped a close contest to Downingtown East. And amazingly enough, the regular season final on April 29th was by the same score: 6-5.

“I am going to miss going to practice tomorrow, but we really did some special things this season,” said Cardinals’ head coach Pat Lacon.

“Both were very tough, challenging games,” Horvath added. “Upper Dublin is very well coached, very disciplined, and very tough to beat.

“It gets harder and harder to beat teams the more you play them. (Upper Dublin) also played on Tuesday and made them a bit warmer than us.”

Upper Dublin led most of the way, notching the game’s first tally just 11 seconds in on a goal by Matthew Miller immediately after an opening faceoff win. East countered with three goals in a nine-minute stretch later in the first period, and two of the goals were the result of individual power moves by senior standout Bo Horvath.

The Cardinals, however, dominated the second and third quarters and reeled off four scores in a row: the first two with man-up goals, and the rest on transition goals by senior Caleb Kelly.

“We work a lot on transition, so we always want to play fast. But we don’t want to hurry and we did that a few times,” Lucon said.

“It’s not hard to read this game,” Joe Horvath added. “Two of our problem areas are defending against the clear in transition, and staying out of the penalty box. We play a lot better when we are able to manage those two facets.”

Upper Dublin keeper Nate Fechter was outstanding in the opening three quarters with 10 saves. And the Cards had a pronounced 12-2 edge in faceoffs, primarily handled by Will Hoffman.

“Will does a great job. He is a battler and he’s only a sophomore,” Lucon said.

“All of our defensive players – except our goalie – are either new to lacrosse or new to the varsity level. So when you get into those tighter moments, there are times when we play tighter, and that’s what we did down the stretch.”

When asked to compare the regular season clash to the playoff clash against the Cardinals, Quinn answered: “They were very similar games, but it felt different on the field due to the atmosphere and the implications.

“It was a big game.”

HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA —Despite the protests, pleas, and comments from 11 residents Wednesday night, Horsham Township Council unanimously approved a zoning change for townhome development in the Maple Glen Triangle.

The new commercial transition zoning would allow for townhomes to be built on 14.5 acres that were zoned for single-family housing. Ten acres of that land would be protected and replanted since several trees were destroyed or damaged by a September 2021 tornado that swept through the area.

The zoning change is for a tract behind Key Bank along the intersection of Norristown and Welsh roads, which is called the Maple Glen Triangle for the congestion it causes for residents and motorists of Horsham and Upper Dublin townships.

"The traffic is out of control," resident Rick Hogan said. "I'm all for building, but this is a joke. This is absolute greed by the developer."

Developers Bruce Goodman and Sal, Dominic, and Sam Paone of Paone Builders have modified plans since the project was first presented in June 2022.

Find out what's happening in Hatboro-Horshamwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The developers would improve the intersection, adding a left-turn lane onto Welsh, a through lane, a right-turn lane onto Welsh Road, and an emergency access road.

Those improvements, representatives said, should ease the Norristown Road gridlock during peak drive times.

One resident said that the Maple Glen Triangle is not built for this sort of townhome development. And that with the potential of more townhomes on the other side of the Triangle in Upper Dublin Township, the woman wondered why the township was "doubling down on that."

She added that the township was trying to replicate North Philadelphia, where she lived before moving to Horsham 30 years ago.

Resident Rob Moses said he was "very concerned" about the "traffic and the ambiance and the crowded nature" of the township.

Another woman pleaded with the township to think of its residents first.

"I've lived here since 1986 and have raised four kids here," she said to the applause of 25 people in the audience. "I want to stay. I don't want to feel like I'm being pushed out. You have to have a heart for us. We don't need 53 townhomes. We need a lifestyle. Please consider our opinions."

After hearing the comments, the council voted.

Council Vice President William Whiteside made the motion, which was seconded by Councilman Sean Wade. The five supervisors voted unanimously on the zoning change without discussion.

One resident, upon leaving after the meeting, shouted at the council, calling the vote an "absolute joke" and a "disgrace." "You listened to everyone and you still voted yes."

UPPER DUBLIN >> West Chester Rustin took the lead on the first possession of the fourth quarter and never gave it back.

Fittingly, the Golden Knights turned a one-point deficit into a one-point lead with a pair of free throws from Matt Nochumson with 7:22 left in their District 1-5A first-round matchup against Upper Dublin.

Rustin went 15-for-20 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and made enough defensive stops to leave Upper Dublin High School with a 58-51 win Friday night.

“We’ve had a rough season,” Rustin senior Tyler Giunta said. “We’ve had ups and downs. We’ve had a tough schedule compared to other teams in our league and we have a tough schedule for a reason. Other teams in our league play nobody. When it comes playoff time we’re ready. We were the 12 seed playing the five, but honestly we didn’t even look at the seeds. Everyone is 0-0 in the playoffs. We came in here and executed. We made our foul shots at the end of the game and everything worked out for us.”

Ryan Jaross went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter while Jake Crispino was 4-for-5, Giunta 3-for-4, Nochumson 2-for-2 and Ian Schlesinger 2-for-4.

“There have been games where we struggled from the foul line,” Giunta said, “but I feel like towards the end of the season we really made a lot of our foul shots. We have guys that just have ice in their veins, like Ryan Jaross came off the bench and was 4-for-4, swished all of them. That’s just what we do.”

After fifth-seeded Upper Dublin missed its first three shots of the fourth quarter, Crispino and Chase Hatton made baskets to give No. 12 Rustin a 43-38 lead with 5:27 remaining. The Cardinals got within 43-42 after Griffin Pensabene and DJ Cerisier split free throws and Ryan Mulroy made a layup, but the one-point deficit was as close as they’d get the rest of the way.

Three empty Cardinals possessions came after Crispino, Giunta and Jaross went a combined 6-for-6 from the line. Giunta split his next trip to the foul line for a 7-0 run and 50-42 lead with 2:02 on the clock.

“We have a big group of seniors and it’s honestly we didn’t want to go home tonight,” Giunta said. “I feel like we wanted it more than they did. We prepared all week for them. We knew personnel, we knew what we needed to do. We executed. We got stops.”

Mulroy hit a three to make it 50-45 and the Cardinals defense forced a turnover and got two missed Rustin free throws on back-to-back possessions. They were unable to capitalize, missing shots on the offensive end.

“It was a very tough shooting night,” Upper Dublin coach Derek Brooks said. “Part of that I think sometimes is it’s the playoffs, it’s the moment, it’s the nerves, it’s, ‘Oh man we really need one to go here’ and it just builds. Unfortunately sometimes you have off shooting nights and this was one of those nights. I think we could have done a better job really working the ball to get some better shots. I think some guys were pressing, ‘Oh I have to get one here’ instead of really, really working it and getting a clean look. Sometimes that happens in moments like this, though.”

Jaross sunk two free throws to get the margin up to seven, 52-45, but Upper Dublin’s Colin O’Sullivan answered with a three to make it a four-point game, 52-48, with under a minute left.

Giunta made the play of the game on the ensuing possession. His teammate was trapped between defenders right in front of the scorers table and lofted a pass to Giunta in the middle of the court. Two Upper Dublin defenders were in position for a steal and likely breakaway layup at the other end, but Giunta skied into the air, grabbed the ball and found Crispino all alone under the basket for a layup and 54-48 lead with 25.8 seconds left.

“I knew it was going to be a lob so I knew I had to jump to the ball,” Giunta said. “I just kind of rose up, caught it and spun. It just happened in the moment. I wasn’t really planning on doing anything specific, it just happened. I saw Jake under the basket wide open. I hit him and he made it.”

O’Sullivan answered with a three, his third of the night, to make it a one-score game. The Cardinals thought they got a turnover on the next possession but were whistled for a foul. Crispino hit both free throws to make it 56-51 with 13 seconds left and all but seal the game.

The teams played a back-and-forth first half. Rustin led by three, 14-11, after the first quarter and Upper Dublin led by two, 27-25, at the half. The Cardinals scored the first two baskets after halftime for their largest lead of the night, 31-25, but Rustin responded with a 12-2 run to move ahead, 37-33. O’Sullivan hit a three late in third to send the Cardinals to the fourth ahead by one, 38-37.

Nochumson led Rustin with 13 points while Giunta added 11 and Schlesinger had nine.

Mulroy led the Cardinals with a game-high 17 points. Pensabene added 10 and O’Sullivan had nine.

Rustin advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face No. 4 West Chester East Wednesday.

“East is our biggest rival,” Giunta said. “Us seniors, we’ve played East our whole career and we never beat them. This could be the biggest moment in our career. We want this more than anything and it’s a great matchup for us.”

Upper Dublin’s season ends with the loss. The Cardinals finished with an 18-7 record.

“I look at it in three parts,” Brooks said of his first season at UD. “Before we get everybody back (from football), it’s a lot of uncertainty. I barely got to meet a lot of the guys. I thought we had a good start despite not having all of those guys. Then we get everybody back – we lose to Abington, we lose to PW – but then we get everybody on the same page and win 13 straight. Going into this we won 15 of 17. We had six losses going into this game – five of them were to teams with 20 wins and the other loss was to Abington, who just advanced to the second round (of District 1-6A).

“I’m very proud of what we did in the regular season. Obviously this was not how we wanted to end it to say the least. It’s very, very disappointing, bittersweet. I love every single kid that we coached. Those seniors, they re-established this program… These guys have taken it and gone 17 wins and 18 wins in back-to-back years. I don’t know when the last time was that happened for (Upper Dubin). A lot of them are two-sport athletes. They have to be one of the best athletic classes in this school’s history. They should be very proud of themselves.”

WILLOW GROVE >> It’s typically an advantage for the batter when they see the same pitcher multiple times in a game, but that wasn’t the case when Upper Moreland hosted Upper Dublin in a Suburban One League crossover game.

After allowing four hits his first time through the Cardinals lineup, Golden Bears pitcher Jimmy Torpey allowed only three hits through the rest of his outing. The left-hander went through Upper Dublin’s lineup two full times and saw the top six spots in the batting order a third time before hitting his pitch limit in the top of the sixth inning.

Torpey struck out nine batters to two walks over 5 1/3 innings and allowed one run on seven hits in Upper Moreland’s 3-1 win Monday afternoon.

“I like to analyze their swings, analyze their at-bats,” Torpey, who’s friends with a lot of players on Upper Dublin and plays with them in the summer with Thoroughbred Baseball Academy, said. “I see what they’re looking for, what I can lean on, stuff like that. I find myself getting stronger as the game goes on.”

“(Torpey is) just an excellent high school pitcher,” Upper Moreland coach Jim Fasano said. “He throws strikes, he commands two pitches – he throws strikes with both of them. He’s going to go down as one of the best pitchers in Upper Moreland High School history – not because of his overwhelming velocity, but because of his mound presence and his competitiveness. He throws strikes. It’s just so important to throw strikes and get ahead in counts and he did.”

The only run Torpey surrendered came in the top of the first inning when Upper Dublin’s Jared Levis led off with a single, beat the throw to second after getting picked off and scored on an Aidan McCarthy double.

The senior pitched around three second-inning singles, a first-and-second-no-outs situation in the third and a leadoff single in the fifth. He finished four of his completed five innings with strikeouts.

“I put in a lot of work in the winter, my strikeout numbers are going up,” Torpey, who caught Cardinals looking on four of his nine strikeouts, said. “I think I had 10, nine and nine in my last three starts. It’s something I’ve been working on a lot.”

“Torpey’s a great pitcher,” UD coach Ed Wall said. “He’s really tough. It doesn’t matter who he’s facing, he’s going to give you a battle. He mixes three pitches for strikes and really keeps us off-balance. We got up there looking at a lot instead of being aggressive. It bit us in the end.”

Torpey also helped his cause at the plate. After Jackson Townsend’s sacrifice fly tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first, Torpey had what proved to be the game-winning RBI. His two-out single knocked in Nate Kelly and put the Golden Bears (3-2, 2-1 SOL Freedom) ahead for good.

Townsend, a freshman, added his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the third. His single to right field scored Kelly and gave Upper Moreland a little breathing room with a 3-1 advantage.

“(Townsend) is a really dynamic baseball player,” Fasano said. “He has good at-bats, he flies, he’s versatile on defense. He’s got room to grow, of course, as we all do, but he has the potential to be as good as he wants to be.”

The Cardinals (2-2, 2-1 SOL Liberty) got solid pitching performances from McCarthy and Austin Dahl to keep the game tight. McCarthy started and went three innings, striking out six batters to no walks and allowed three runs on five hits. Dahl threw three scoreless innings in relief, striking out four batters to no walks and allowing one hit.

“Aidan battled,” Wall said. “He wasn’t 100%. I know where he would want himself to be, but as always he is going to grind out three, four, five innings for us. He did that today, settled down. He gave up a couple soft-contact that ended up scoring runs for them. Austin came in, blew their doors in and pretty much shut them down from then on out.”

Upper Dublin hurt itself on the bases. Three different runners got picked off. It worked to the Cardinals advantage in the first inning, but the other two times happened at second base and turned runners in scoring position into outs. Upper Moreland senior captain and catcher Paul Meyers threw both players out.

Upper Dublin managed to bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the sixth inning after Torpey hit his pitch limit, but Colin Fell came on in relief and earned the five-out save. He struck out three batters in 1 2/3 perfect innings.

Last season, Upper Moreland won one crossover game. It was the SOL Freedom’s only crossover win against the SOL Liberty. The Golden Bears hope starting 1-0 is a sign of a successful season ahead.

“It’s nice to beat bigger schools,” Fasano said. “These guys were the District 1 champs last year. They were in the state semifinal. Granted it’s a different team this year, but it shows that when we play well, we can play with anybody. I feel like this part of the season is all about building confidence and proving to ourselves that we belong on the field with these guys and we did today.”
