The Milford Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and the National Fitness Campaign to bring an outdoor Fitness Court Studio to Milford, according to a community announcement.
The Fitness Court Studio, at Milford Town Park, opens at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, with a ribbon cutting during the Town Park Celebration. Afterward, Jose? Pinto, a strength and conditioning coach at Milford High School, will lead high school athletes in a demonstration of the Fitness Court, a handicapped-accessible outdoor gym.
The Fitness Court Studio was developed to expand free access to high-quality workouts and create equitable access to exercise for communities across the region, according to the announcement. There are seven exercise stations.
Created for those ages 14 and older, Fitness Court Studio workouts are adaptable for all fitness levels, allowing participants to move at their own pace, according to the announcement. Users can also download the free Fitness Court app, which acts as a coach in your pocket and enhances the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness experience.
Milford is among 15 campaign partners building a network of Fitness Courts throughout the state, with the help of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
High-quality workouts, without paying gym fees
Jim Asam, administrator for Milford Parks and Recreation, said the Fitness Court Studio will provide an innovative addition to Milford’s park system, giving teenagers and adults the opportunity to get a high-quality workout without paying gym fees. The Studio portion of the Fitness Court provides an outdoor experience for group exercise, such as yoga and gymnastics.
A 32-foot-wide multipurpose training wall that anchors the Fitness Court Studio features a mural created by Massachusetts artist Carol Abram, according to the announcement. Her design, titled “Fitness for All,” showcases health and wellness in Milford, while celebrating the diversity of the population and highlighting historic aspects of the community. It was selected from more than 30 submissions to a "call to artists" executed by the Milford Cultural Council in December 2023. She was awarded a $5,000 grant from the National Fitness Campaign for her work.
All residents are invited to attend the launch event from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, at Milford Town Park to try the Fitness Court Studio and see the new mural, according to the announcement. Rain date is June 22.
