BRANCHBURG, NJ – The former Neshanic Flea Market property has been added to the South Branch Greenway.
The 3.68-acre parcel of land including a historic residence was subdivided and a 2.8-acre parcel was deeded to the Somerset County Open Space Preservation Program; the other parcel containing a little less than an acre was deeded to Branchburg Township.
Located at the intersection of Main Street and Elm Street in the Neshanic Station section of the township, the property is the site of the former Neshanic Flea Market. The county and township partnered to purchase the property from the estate of Mary Stone Weiss for $350,000 with each entity contributing half of the purchase price. The county acquired the vacant portion of the property while the township acquired the parcel containing the residence.

“This is a key addition to the county’s expanding South Branch Greenway,” said Freeholder Brian G. Gallagher, county open space liaison. “The preservation of this property will provide parking for fishermen and will ultimately serve as a trail head for the trail network being developed along the South Branch of the Raritan River.
“The acquisition of the Weiss property is another in a long line of successful partnerships between Somerset County and its municipalities,” he said. “Preservation projects such as this could not be accomplished without the groups working together to contribute resources and funding toward the common goal of preserving the rich cultural, environmental and recreational character of Somerset County.”
The property had operated as the Neshanic Flea Market by Weiss and her family since the 1970s and was a popular weekend destination for treasure hunters and those looking to enjoy the scenic Somerset County countryside.
The 19th-century Italianate residence served as the family home and contained a snack bar for the flea market. Branchburg Township had the foresight to preserve the historic character of Neshanic Station and will ensure that the residence remains and is restored.
"The township is very concerned with preserving our historic homes and the character of our villages,” said Branchburg Mayor James Schworn. “With the help of the county, the township has acquired this home with the intent it be auctioned to the highest bidder and used as a single-family residence. The home will come with a deed restriction that will require the exterior be maintained with the historic character it has now.
“Through this county/township partnership, will we preserve a historic house, create a walking path for the enjoyment of county residents while also offsetting the cost of the acquisition,” the mayor said. “A win-win for all."
The South Branch Greenway is a long-term county greenway initiative intended to create a continuous open space network along the South Branch of the Raritan River. This network will link to other portions of the Somerset County park system and provide connections to local open space initiatives within the county.
The greenway ultimately will extend from the confluence of the North Branch and Main Branch of the Raritan River to the border of Hunterdon County.
Somerset County began the preservation of the South Branch Greenway in Hillsborough and Branchburg in the mid-1990s. With the addition of the Weiss property, the greenway now exceeds 670 acres.

BRANCHBURG — Residents near the Lehigh Road rail crossing in Branchburg thanked Township Committee on Monday for getting the ball rolling in creating a quiet zone in Neshanic Station.
“We truly believe it’s in the best interest of the community and will move us closer to improving the quality of life in the southern part of our township,” said Karina LaMalfa of Briar Way, a member of Home Owners for Reducing Noise, or HORN, the group that has been pushing for the zone.
The committee agreed have a letter of intent of a quiet zone sent to the Federal Railroad Administration, the state Department of Transportation and Norfolk Southern Rail Corporation, the company that operates the line.
A town needs approval from the federal and state entities to form a quiet zone, which is a crossing in which trains are under no obligation to sound their horns. Instead, the railroad company installs extra safety improvements to mitigate any danger caused by silencing the horns.
The push for the quiet zone began in the fall of 2008, when the township formed a subcommittee and hired a consultant to evaluate the crossing at Lehigh.
For the crossing at Lehigh, township officials have determined that a $35,000 “power out indicator,” or a device that lets a train crew know if the gates and bells at the crossing are not working, is needed.
Members of HORN approached Township Committee again earlier this year and asked that they contact the federal and state organizations. However, Township Administrator Bonin reported back that the federal authorities weren’t getting back to the township.
“With this notice of intent, it will force people to the table, people that have, in the past, not answered our calls,” Bonin said. “They now must respond to us and come to the table and sit with us and create with us an acceptable plan for establishing a quiet zone there.”
The group HORN has offered to raise the funds needed for the indicator. Mayor Bob Bouwman said that he will inform the group once the train company gets back to the township with the official dollar amount.
Roberta Karr of Briar Way said it was a “privilege” to come before the committee on Monday after it passed the resolution.
“We will be so grateful for any help you can provide in ameliorating this gross noise disturbance in our lovely neighborhood, particularly between 12 midnight and 4 a.m. in the morning,” she said. “These train jockeys just can’t give up disrupting our neighborhood.”

Now they run B.A.R.E. Flower Farm which has a mission to offer a "local alternative for blooms while creating a community that centers around living a more sustainable lifestyle."
As a relatively inexperienced grower/gardener, this was not something Babbitt was familiar with at first. She always had an interest in sustainability and had initially delved into vegetable gardening to reduce her carbon footprint on the planet.
She struggled at first.
"My mom could put anything into the soil and it would grow," said Babbit.
"I always thought I had a 'black thumb' and then one day I had an 'Ah ha' moment. There is no such thing as a green or black thumb. It is based on knowledge," said Babbitt.
She learned that vegetables needed flowers to boost productivity. She slowly became that "townhouse person that looked like they had a jungle in the front and the back of their yard," said Babbitt.
Babbitt then found the property in Branchburg and she and Eric got to work. They converted a 30x90-foot plot, lifted and removed the sod, added truckloads of compost and went from there.
Prior to Bare Flower Farm, Babbitt also had a soap company called b.a.r.e. soaps. This is where she got the name for her farm as b.a.r.e. stands for "bringing antiseptic resources to everyone."
Through her soap business she realized her passion for living and sharing what a sustainable lifestyle means to her. She expanded this into her flower business and eventually into tulips.
For holidays such as Valentine's Day, Babbitt said the majority of the flowers sold in the US have to be internationally flown in. In early 2022, she took a Tulip Workshop and learned how to force tulips in her basement throughout the winter.
"It's kind of been a science experiment. The nerdy part of me loves to control the pace of how tulips grow. To slow them down or speed them up," said Babbitt , who currently uses LED lights. She plans to switch to solar.
Now she is able to force more than 200,000 tulips each winter season.
"Local flowers travel fewer miles and are better quality," said Babbitt She is hoping to triple her flower goal for next year.
Her tulips are available through early April sometimes closer to Mother's Day depending on the weather. They have a 10- to 14-day base life, which she says is hard to get from a grocery store.
Previously her flowers were available at the Duke Farms Farmer's Market but right now she is offering pickups at her residential location or delivery.
"Flowers convey so much emotion," said Babbitt. "A bouquet of really well-grown flowers stands out."

2 Park Commission Facilities Make the Top 40
NESHANIC STATION, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission Neshanic Valley Golf Course, located at 2301 South Branch Road in Neshanic Station, has been recognized as among the top five public golf courses in the state in nine varied categories.
Neshanic Valley ranks statewide as:
#2 overall public golf course
#1 county facility
#1 in Central Jersey
#1 practice facility
#1 best conditioned publicly owned
#2 most female friendly based on multiple tees, modern facilities &
approachable staff
#4 most challenging
#5 most scenic
In addition, hole #7 on the Meadow Course was selected as the best short
par 4 in the state.
Somerset County Park Commission Quail Brook Golf Course on New Brunswick Road in Somerset rounded out the NJ Monthly list, selected as the 40th best facility in the state.
The NJ Monthly ranking were based on a vote by a panel of 21 New Jersey golf experts who were asked to rank their top 20 publicly owned or privately owned daily fee courses. The panel was also asked to rank courses in 14 categories.
Neshanic Valley was previously honored as the 30th best municipal course in the nation by Golfweek and among the Best Public Golf Courses in New Jersey by Sports Illustrated and CNN.com.
“Neshanic Valley has maintained its reputation because of its design, its versatility, and the dedicated staff that understands that Neshanic Valley must be maintained to the highest standards,” commented Darrell Marcinek, Director of Golf Maintenance. “We are proud to be able to provide a world-class golfing experience to the people of Somerset County, the state, and the region.”
Neshanic Valley hosted the 2012 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship® last June, one of 13 USGA Championships held nationwide each year.
The complete golfing facility provides an all-inclusive golfing experience with a 27-hole Championship Course, a 9-hole Academy Course, the Learning Center, and the Callaway Golf Performance Center.
The state-of-the-art Learning Center includes a double-ended driving range with grass and mat hitting areas, a 12,000 square foot putting green, a practice facility including bunkers and three chipping greens, and two practice holes.
The Performance Center at Neshanic Valley, the only facility of its kind on the east coast, offers a state-of-the-art computerized golf club fitting and swing analysis system, operated by Callaway-trained professionals.

THE boy held the Brown Bess musket on his lap and ran his hands over it, lovingly. He had never played with guns as a child, never played Cops?and?Robbers or Cowboys?and?Indians.
Even now, he had no desire to hunt, but he had saved his money and bought the Brown Bess himself. Because with the Brown Bess, it was different.
This was the gun that had won freedom for the country.
“In Trenton,” he said, “they fought with a bayonet on the end. The powder got wet when they crossed the Delaware.”
He knew about Trenton, the boy did. Although only 15½, he had crossed the river twice on Christmas Day in the Revolutionary War re?enactment. He worked part time as a tour guide at the Old Barracks in Trenton, and had volunteered his time at the Washington Crossing Museum (across the river in Bucks County, Pa.) and at the Thompson Neely House down the road.
The boy is one of the 5,000 people Charlie Stone talks about.
“In a matter of minutes, I could raise you an army of 5,000 that I know of alone,” he said. “The Governor could have an army in this state if he wanted one. Well?regulated, too.
“Every man who goes into a re?enactment would die on the sands of Beach Haven, if he had to. They are that dedicated. I know doctors, lawyers, even Indians in re?enactment groups who are so dedicated that they'd really fight if they had to. And their wives and children with them.
“We always had them, the camp followers. The army couldn't have existed without its women.”
At 8:30 on a raw March morning, the pot?bellied stove is already going in Charlie Stone's shop in the old Jersey Central depot in Neshanic Station, just off Route 202 a little north of Flemington. Charlie Stone has had his shop in the depot for the last 12 years. He has been selling guns for 25 or 30 years, and so it was to Charlie Stone's that we went when my son, Ron, wanted his Brown Bess musket.
Charlie Stone has supplied 2,500 people in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware with guns, uniforms, cartridge boxes, leather pouches, hats and all the other trimmings that re?enactment groups need.
“Twenty years ago, the reproductions started when the originals started to disappear,” he said, picking up a Jager rifle stock. “This is the beginning of the Kentucky rifle. I sell this and the blueprints to go with it. People make the gun themselves.”
On another wall are the originals —the Colt Springfields and others, including some dating to 1863. They come mostly from private homes and they sell for 20 times what they went for 10 years ago.
And in his office upstairs were the uniforms (stacked in boxes), the wonlen's long capes and the cotton blouses and skirts that Charlie Stone was supplying for a re?enactment at Washington's Headquarters in Morristown. Also upstairs, Charlie Stone has his mail?order business; with the help of his wife, two daughters and sons, he supplies Revolutionary War groups from Connecticut to Florida with uniforms and accessories.
But Charlie Stone sells more than guns and shoe buckles and cartridge boxes and powder horns. He sells 200 years of the history of a people— the romantic, colorful, pure?wool history, the clean, gleaming shiny?as?shoe?buckles history, the ingrained?in?lovely?wood part of it, a history far removed from death and destruction.
And for that history, there is more demand now than ever.
The Revolution went from 1776 to 1787,” Charlie Stone recalled. “In June, we have the Battle of Monmouth. The Battle of Saratoga is in two years. There is more interest now than during the Bicentennial. The National Park Service puts on the winter encampents at Jockey Hollow in Morristown in April. I'm very busy.”
Charlie Stone is no longer a young man, but he would like to be. Beneath a whiskered face and beat?up old hat, he wears a jacket that says “Neshanic Station Volunteer Fire Company.” (The little town of Neshanic Station, which boasts mostly of big, old houses, tall trees and a famous flea market, dates to the early 1700's.)
But the eyes on the man are old, too old for a man no more than middle?aged. And Charlie Stone is the first one to tell you that he believes in reincarnation.
“My mother's family was here since the 1500's,” he said, “and my father's side are Connecticut Yankees — French Hugenots. They were sutlers — purveyors of guns, ammunition and food for the Revolutionary Army. That's what I am now. A purveyor. I supply the re?enactment groups.
“That's my great?grandfather up there on the wall. He went to California for the Gold Rush. Went by mule and canoe across Panama before the canal was built. When he got there, he discovered that his money would be in leather, the harnesses the mules would use to haul the ore out of the earth.
According to Charlie Stone, the Brown Bess that my son bought was made in Japan. “Others are made in Italy and Spain,” he said, adding that for several years prior to the Bicentennial “you couldn't get any American arms company to make a reproduction.
“When we went to them back in ‘69 to ask, they told us we were crazy that nobody would buy the reproductions Now, the Ithaca Arms Company is making a reproduction, and in one year they are backlogged with four years’ work. And Winchester is finally coming out with its 1894 Bicentennial carbine.”
I asked Charlie Stone why the growing interest in re?enactments.
“We're not at war,” he replied, “so we can play at it and feel good about it. Mankind loves war, even if we are only playing at it.”
It was a noteworthy commentary, one worth thinking about. I thought about it when Charlie Stone, who is in the Essex County Brigade and the Middlesex Militia, showed me the medallion he got for partaking in a re?enactment of the Battle of Princeton.
“It means almost as much to me as the Purple Heart,” he said, and there was a look in his eyes when he said it.
I had seen that look someplace before, but it was not until I was outside Charlie Stone's shop that I remembered where. It was in my boy's eyes when he held the Brown Bess musket in his arms. ?
