Home Care In Billerica, MA

Home Care Billerica, MA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Amos Wyman Homestead gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Billerica, MA is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

The Always Best Care Difference

Since 1996, Always Best Care has provided non-medical in-home care for seniors to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle as they get older. We are proud to have helped more than 25,000 seniors maintain higher levels of dignity and respect. We focus on providing seniors with the highest level of in-home care available so that they may live happily and independently.

Unlike some senior care companies, we genuinely want to be included in our clients' lives. We believe that personalized care is always the better option over a "one size fits all" approach. To make sure our senior clients receive the best care possible, we pair them with compassionate caregivers who understand their unique needs. That way, they may provide care accordingly without compromising their wellbeing.

The Always Best Care difference lies in life's little moments - where compassionate care and trustworthy experience come together to help seniors live a fruitful, healthy life. Whether you are an aging adult that can't quite keep up with life's daily tasks or the child of a senior who needs regular in-home services, Always Best Care is here to help.

“I’ve worked for Always Best Care since November of 2022 and I can tell you first hand how caring the owner, David Robinson, is. He has a no pressure sales approach and is always willing to provide resources to people whether or not that garners business for himself. He genuinely cares for people and their wellbeing. This sentiment goes beyond our clients and on to our caregivers as well, as he is constantly telling staff how important our caregivers are and encourages us to do what we can to make sure they are happy and taken care of. David, alongside others in leadership roles, are not above working alongside our caregivers. David will work in and outside of business hours to give people rides, run to the store for them, drop off supplies, and has even done a few handyman tasks to clients who ask. His dedication has no limit. The phrase “I really want to help them.” is one I’ve come accustomed to hearing in the office. David loves people and he loves to help where and when he can. I cannot express enough how good it feels to work for someone with this attitude, especially in a field that has so much burn out. David is genuine, kind, and caring. And I can tell you, he expects nothing less from those of us that work with him. I am proud to be part of such a wonderful team.”

“David Robinson's Always Best Care office is an established, reliable home care agency--one of the best in the Boston area. As a colleague and fellow owner of a home care agency in the community, I can honestly say that Always Best Care provides excellent care and attention to clients and their families. David and his team more than pass the key test, "would I let his office take care of my Mom?". Absolutely. And that is why we are happy to refer cases which we can not cover outside our area.”

“I was in Rehab after hip replacement surgery at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA (which was successful), but the rehab wasn't working out; evaluations but only 1 OT session by the 3rd day, no PT sessions. Also, since I had to use a walker for any functions, very slow to no response to call button. I was put in touch with David Robinson at Always Best Care in Belmont, MA and he immediately came to the Rehab facility to meet me, drove to our home in Wayland, MA to see our house and meet my wife, and arranged for 24 hour home care for me starting the next day. David picked me up at the Rehab and took me home. I and my wife are both 83, and I'm far from being debilatated. But, the several days of 24/hour care were just what was needed to get me over the initial recovery hump and moving around pretty well at home. The at home PT and OT were excellent. My wife, who had a mild stroke a couple of years ago, would have found it very hard to attend to me right out of Rehab. It was an unexpected cost for us, which in retrospect seems like quite a value.”

Rehab was not successful with my mom walking. With mobility issues my mom needs 12-hour aid 7 days a week to avoid further injuries and proper care being immobile at assisted living. I called 6 agencies for an aid/caregiver and with days’ notice Always Best Care Senior Services/Kathleen Chambers made a full commitment to meeting our needs. All the others either did not respond or were not ready to commit. Kathleen committed and has filled our needs everyday for over 3 weeks with 3 very capable, professional and caring aids who worked in conjunction Physical and Occupational Therapy and my mother’s mobility had made great progress. These 3 aids Rena, Esther and Aidah are so great for my mom and our family. Kathy, Rena, Esther and Aidah are all-stars in my eyes.”

He set up some tours for us and accompanied us on others, putting us in contact with the Executive Directors rather than just the marketers. His advice was unfailingly on target. The placed I wanted to see that he didn't recommend were absolutely wrong for my mom, and the one he suggested as the best fit absolutely was the right one. She ended up there for a respite stay and loves it, but has decided she wants to give in-home care a try before committing to the assisted living option. The way that David, my co-workers, and everyone involved is so dedicated to the well-being of our clients and caregivers is like nothing I have seen. David sets an amazing example for the team by going above and beyond for our clients and caregivers, making it only natural to follow in his footsteps and do our very best as well. We've got a rock solid team of people who are well equipped in each area they serve our clients in, and it's really cool to see everyone working with such passion and compassion. This business is all about relationships and cultivating them well, and I can truly say I'm proud to be part of a team that does this so well. “I have worked for Always Best Care Senior Services for 5 years, mostly as an in-home health care provider for elderly and disabled clients. As an employee of ABC, I have also cared for clients on a one- on- one basis who are in Assisted Living Facilities and Skilled Nursing Facilities. I enjoy my work and my clients. The culture of ABC is that every client is treated as an individual with personal needs and feelings rather than as a case number or diagnosis. ABC’s approach to clients is mirrored in how they treat caregivers. Consideration of the caregiver’s persona is matched with those of the client. The needs of the client are outlined to ensure the caregiver services provided are a comfortable match. I always feel respected, appreciated, and valued in my role and I equally feel the same consideration is provided to my clients. It is a professional, diverse and overall warm working environment. There is an open-door policy for both client and caregiver where open and constant dialogue and feedback is welcome and responded to in real-time. I would recommend working at Always Best Care to anyone in this profession or anyone considering this profession. Annette Vincent”

“Four years ago, when I needed a knee replacement, I was looking online for in-home caregivers and came across this agency in Belmont. David Robinson, the owner, came out right away to assess my needs--up to the point of picking me up at the hospital after surgery with the caregiver. I just had my second knee done and there were some complications this time, but the team at Always Best Care was on it, sending two alternating caregivers and taking me to follow up appointments. I can't say enough about their compassion, expertise, and cheerfulness. Highly recommend them!”

“Dear Kathy: I am writing to express my deepest appreciation to everyone at Always Best Care who cared for my mother, Noriko Scheuer, during her final months. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2018, started on hospice care in mid-June 2019, and began with your caregivers in late August. She dies on November 21 at the age of 95-1/2, peacefully and pain-free thanks to the excellent care she received. The team who provided round-the-clock services combined a high level of professionalism with caring personal connection. Marie Jean, Sophie Kayinza, Catherine Nakyobe, Claire Nalwoga, Joan Nampijja, Husa Wright, Nadine Wumba, and for a while Resty Namaalwa were all kind, attentive, and directive with my mother's condition. I also enjoyed speaking with them and learning about their life stories. There women are impressive examples of immigration, dedication and hard work. Sophie is to be commended for her care during my mother's last hours and her kindness to me when I arrived on the scene. A huge thanks to you as well for "being on the casE" in such a responsive and caring manner. I recall that when I first called tou in late August after my mother fell, you were able to visit Boylston Place that same day to make an assessment so that care could being the folliwing day/ And on several other occasions you were very resourceful in responding to last-minute cancellations and changes in care protocols. I believe that under the care of this wonderful team, and their coordination with the Boylston Place and hospice teams, my mother was able to spend her final months comfortably and peacefully, accepting with grace her imminent passing.”

“Dear Friend, I'm sharing this reference in hopes that it provides comfort to other families who seek caring, attentive, loving and flexible care for their aging loved ones. My mother/family has been one of your clients for a number of years and I know ABC's values and capabilities extremely well. For families who are navigating the journey of elder care, who are facing uncertainty and who are looking for a trusted, reliable team who will care for clients like family (if not better), there is no better team than the wonderful folks at ABC. We've been working with David, Kathy and the team for several years and they have exceeded our hopes. Sure, they are on time, professional, safe and courteous. Even more, they are thoughtful, kind and caring. True problem solvers, they provide comfort knowing that my mom is in terrific hands. Even more, they anticipate challenges and solve problems before they are needed. I'm sharing this info because I know how daunting and, indeed, paralyzing, searching for an agency can be. From the first call, ABC did it right. They listened rather than sold. They personalized it, so we found the right care for my mother. They did nothing less than treat my mom the way they would want their own mother's to be treated. I've learned a lot during the process and one of the most important things I learned is: trust ABC. Best wishes, Zack”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Billerica, MA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Sichuan Gourmet Billerica or visit Billerica Mills Historic District, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Billerica, MA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your MA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Billerica, MA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Billerica, MA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Billerica, MA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. BILLERICA — Given their recent hardships, anyone would understand if Ed and Cindy Lossman decided to take a break from the months-long task of decorating their Billerica home for the holidays in their gloriously over-the-top trademark style.

Their difficulties began in December 2021, when Ed was hospitalized for COVID-19 just weeks after switching on that season’s massive display. During the four-month ordeal, he received last rites twice while on a ventilator battling raging fevers, two bouts of pneumonia, collapsed lungs, complications from diabetic ketoacidosis, and blood clots requiring the amputation of half his right foot.

In fact, Ed was still hospitalized when Cindy’s father, James Senior, lost his battle with Alzheimer’s disease at his Pepperell home in February 2022. This past summer, Ed had just returned to work following further foot surgery when the couple’s 36-year-old daughter, Courtnie, died unexpectedly. The date, Aug. 30, was Cindy’s birthday.

Advertisement:

Despite the couple’s unabated grief, they never considered dimming the lights on the tradition that has become a local legend. Instead, this year’s presentation is dedicated in memory of Courtnie, whom they call their “angel above.”

“I’m not taking Christmas away, on top of everything else,” Cindy insisted. “Not from my grandchildren or from anyone.”

For the 29th year, Lights at the Lossmans is shimmering at 26 Biscayne Drive in Billerica through Dec. 31. The spectacle — which began innocently enough with outdoor blow molds of Mickey and Minnie Mouse — now takes four months to organize with endless twinkling lights, light-up Santas, elves, gingerbread men, angels, snowmen, trees, wreaths, snowflakes, candy canes, brightly wrapped presents, various Christmas villages, and garland galore. And that’s just inside.

The winter wonderland continues on the front and side lawns with reindeer pulling Santa’s sled, an army of toy soldiers lining the steps, an animated Ferris wheel, and a scene from “A Christmas Story” depicting a boy with his tongue frozen to a pole. The only understated aspect of the dazzling array is a pair of white wicker seats on the front porch where the Lossmans enjoy watching visitors react with glee or become stunned into silence.

Advertisement:

“I absolutely love the kids, but I also love the adults who act like kids,” said Cindy, noting that a parade of party buses and vans from senior housing communities visit almost nightly. Yet the real magic takes place just outside the display, where a donation box has discreetly united visitors in the true spirit of the holidays for the past decade.

At first, however, Cindy said she was hesitant to incorporate even an optional fund-raising component into the free event.

“Christmas is supposed to be fun. So many people can hardly afford gifts, and I didn’t want anyone to feel bad or think they had to donate,” she said. But after adding a large quantity of decorations from a Tewksbury family who had concluded their own decorating ritual, unsolicited donations began appearing.

“I’d wake up and a pile of canned goods would be on the front steps,” Ed said. “People just assumed we were collecting for the food pantry.”

The Lossmans improved on the idea, using their annual festivities to raise spirits, funds, and awareness for local residents and causes. Past beneficiaries include Nathan Casella, a Billerica boy fighting Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma; Reece Zink, born with a rare genetic condition; the family of Tim Oliveri, a lifelong Billerica resident who succumbed to pancreatic cancer at age 48; and the Longo family of Chelmsford when Mike, a father of three young children, relapsed into Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Advertisement:

This year, the Lossmans’ labor of love is dedicated to the Marcus family of Saugus, for whom $42,282 has been raised to date from more than 500 donors toward a $100,000 goal on GoFundMe. After being diagnosed with melanoma in 2016, Larry Marcus endured multiple remissions and recurrences before succumbing to brain cancer on Nov. 27. His wife, Suzanne, is a stay-at-home mom for their 6-year-old son, Cameron, and 3-year-old twin daughters, Charlie and Sky.

Suzanne Marcus said she is “speechless” that a couple who learned of her family’s heartbreak through their shared friend, Melissa Geraci of Tewksbury, is demonstrating such uncommon compassion and generosity.

“I wish this wasn’t happening and I didn’t need the help, but it’s comforting to know there’s a community behind you and that people really do care,” Marcus said. “I’m humbled and very appreciative. I can’t wait to meet [the Lossmans] and give them the biggest hug of my life.”

Geraci, who organized the GoFundMe campaign benefiting the Marcus family, became the beneficiary of last year’s fund-raising efforts at Lights at the Lossmans when Cindy discovered her family’s GoFundMe online. That campaign raised more than $10,200 after Geraci’s paid leave through her teaching job ran out while caring for her twin sons, Matthew and Andrew, who each weighed 2 pounds when born 15 weeks early on Oct. 28, 2022.

“Because of the GoFundMe and the Lossmans, I was able to focus on my babies with less financial stress,” said Geraci, noting her wish to pay their kindness forward. “The fact that Cindy and Ed have their own tragedies, but are still helping other people, speaks a lot to who they are.”

The Lossmans, who experienced the power of good will firsthand when a friend launched a GoFundMe on their behalf during Ed’s hospitalization, said they are firmly committed to the circle of giving while delighting visitors with continuous improvements.

“I’ve still got stuff coming in the mail that you don’t know about, hon,” Cindy told Ed. He looked down and shook his head slowly while telling a visitor, “I don’t look at the checkbook. I don’t want to know.”

“Just like I don’t look at the electric bill,” Cindy replied.

“I guess we’re in it for the long haul,” Ed said with an exaggerated sigh. “I couldn’t afford the moving trucks.”

BILLERICA — Town officials are seeking to have Billerica authorized for disaster assistance programming after last week’s flooding.

It may be unlikely, however, Town Manager John Curran said, due to the relatively low cost of damages in the town.

In a social media post on Aug. 11 a town spokesperson said that Billerica is working with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency to explore the possibility of the town receiving authorization for assistance and declaring a local state of emergency. To help do so, residents are being asked to document any flood damage to their homes or property.

Billerica was one of several towns in Eastern Massachusetts that got hit hard by last week’s storm, which dumped more than 7 inches of rain on the town in the span of just a few hours. It resulted in flash flooding that blocked off roads, submerged vehicles and caused properties to fill with water.

Billerica residents who had property damaged by the flood are asked to fill out a form at bit.ly/45synol, located on the town manager page of the town website, to give a description of the damage to help with the town’s disaster assistance claim.

Within hours of the storm ending, the sun was out and much of the water had drained, but Curran said that some town buildings had hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

“Most of the damage was residential, but there was about $600,000 in damage to the schools,” Curran.

The Marshall Middle School in particular, and to a lesser degree the Dutile Elementary School, saw the most nonresidential damage from the flooding. There was also damage to the Billerica Public Library, and damage to the turf field at Billerica Memorial High School that Curran said could also cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix.

The Middlesex Crossing apartment complex on Concord Road was also particularly impacted, Curran said, with an estimated $150,000 in damage.

“There were several buildings that were basically underwater,” said Curran.

Collectively, however, Curran said it was likely that Billerica’s estimated damages from the storm totaled under $1 million, which he said would not be enough to qualify for MEMA disaster assistance

“I don’t anticipate any aid being available,” said Curran. “But we encourage people to submit any damages they have.”

Most students in Billerica will begin the 2023-2024 school year on Sept. 5. Curran said there may be some impact on the first days in the Marshall and Dutile schools due to the flood damage, but that it wouldn’t be likely to result in any delays.

“We have people working feverishly to get things squared away. At worst it might make it so that on opening day we have to move things around,” said Curran.

Curran praised the response from public safety during the chaos of the storm.

“Public safety did a great job in responding to it, but now we have to prepare to deal with this the next time it happens,” said Curran.

Predicting that the region would experience an unprecedented storm like the one last week was impossible, Curran said, but it did give a glimpse of the strengths and weaknesses communities faced when pushed by extreme weather.

“Everything we had was overtaxed and that caused a lot of the flooding,” said Curran. “Luckily we didn’t have the kinds of system failings seen in other places nearby.”

He was referring to the flooding seen in places like North Andover, which Curran visited on Friday with Gov. Maura Healey, who was there to see the extent of the damage in person.

BOSTON — Shortly after the final whistle sounded on the Billerica High football team’s Merrimack Valley Conference championship-clinching 27-13 win over Chelmsford in a Thanksgiving battle on Wednesday night at Fenway Park, coach Duane Sigsbury made sure he found Lion senior Kyle Wilder, who missed the majority of the season with a major injury.

With thousands of fans piled into the famous ballpark to see another chapter of a heated rivalry, Sigsbury made sure he had a lengthy postgame conversation with Wilder before celebrating with his Indians.

“He had a horrific accident during a game and had many surgeries,” Sigsbury said. “There are things that are more important than football and definitely his health was on all of our minds throughout his ordeal. I was praying for him every night and I just wanted to let him know that this might be a heated game, but anybody from Billerica is there for him if he ever needs it. He was quite a player.”

“Everyone knows,” said CHS coach George Peterson, “that we’re a different team (with Wilder).”

On Wednesday, the Indians had an exciting come-from-behind victory that saw Billerica trailing 13-7 at halftime before scoring three second-half touchdowns.

“In the second half, we had the ball twice,” said Peterson. “There wasn’t much we could get going. It was a tough situation.”

Billerica (9-2) took the opening drive of the second half 68 yards in six plays to take the lead for good.

Junior Dhaethmy “Judd’ Dorival busted loose for a 46-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-two play. Freshman Daniel Venezia’s extra point broke a 13-13 tie.

The Lions (3-8) lost three yards on three plays before punting away their first drive of the third quarter.

Game officials ruled that the kick hit a Billerica player while it bounced (the jumbotron replay seemed to show something different) and CHS had the ball back at Billerica’s 46-yard line, but punted again three plays later.

The next Chelmsford snap on offense came with just over a minute to go in the game.

After the second Lion punt of the third quarter rolled to the Indian 1, BMHS embarked on a 99-yard scoring drive that took 20 plays to unfold and finished with 5:53 remaining the fourth quarter.

“Our offensive line is immense,” Sigsbury said. “We’re lucky to have the line that we do.”

Eighteen of the 20 plays on the way to the end zone were runs, but the biggest play of the drive, and maybe the game, was a fourth-and-19 heave from junior quarterback Steven Gentile to sophomore Noah Canada for 23 yards to the 4.

Gentile scored on a 1-yard run three plays later.

Gentile and Dorival anchored the drive, Dorival with nine carries for 48 yards and Gentile with six for 23 yards. Senior Gus O’Gara also picked up 25 yards on a reverse.

After the touchdown, Billerica junior Nick Cabral jumped on an onside kick that rocketed off the leg of a Chelmsford player.

The Indians then moved 53 yards in 11 plays, scoring on another fourth-down play when Gentile scrambled before seeing a wide open Canada for a 31-yard touchdown pass. It was fourth-and-22 when Gentile fired the touchdown pass.

The drive was once again mostly running plays until BMHS scored with just 1:16 remaining.

“It feels great,” said Sigsbury. “We have a special senior class. Somebody always stepped up for us this year. This was just an unbelievable group of young men. I’m so happy they were able to play on this field.”

Chelmsford’s final possession ended with an interception by O’Gara with six seconds left.

The Lions took a 7-0 lead with 6:22 left in the first quarter on a 9-yard run by senior Kai Everett. The six-play, 45-yard drive was mostly Everett’s handiwork as he rushed five times for 38 yards.

The Indians tied it with 8:30 left in the half when Dorival scored on a 7-yard run.

A 58-yard pass from Gentile to O’Gara set up the touchdown.

The Lions regained the lead just before halftime with a 13-play drive that covered 73 yards and ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Ryan Hart.

CHS converted three times on third down during the possession and scored on fourth-and-goal from the one. The extra missed, but Chelmsford had a 13-7 lead at halftime.

“I’m proud of our kids and we have a huge group of underclassmen coming back,” Peterson said. “This was an awesome venue. It’s pretty cool isn’t it?”

“This is the best experience I’ve probably ever had, it’s amazing,” said O’Gara. “This team doesn’t quit. I’m really proud of these kids. I don’t think there’s a better way to go out for us seniors.”

METHUEN — Mike Murnane made an emphatic return to the field.

Murnane, who was sidelined the first five weeks of the season with a broken collarbone, scored the go-ahead touchdown as part of a fourth quarter that saw him rush for 63 yards as Billerica remained undefeated with a 23-13 road win over Methuen over Friday night at Nicholson Stadium.

Billerica (6-0) has now beaten Central Catholic, Tewksbury and Methuen on the road this season.

“Mike Murnane makes all the difference in the world,” Billerica coach Duane Sigsbury said. “This team is special. We have kids that can play. Our kids put in an absolutely unbelievable effort.”

All offseason and summer, Murnane was set to be Billerica’s starting quarterback. A broken collarbone forced Steven Gentile into the job and with Gentile’s success so far this season a move was not in the cards. As a result, Murnane has slid into a role as a hybrid wide receiver and running back, where he is poised to be a force.

“Coming back to a 5-0 team I knew I had to make something happen,” Murnane said. “We’ve been saying it’s ring season. This year is our year.”

Methuen led 13-8 at the half and seemed poised on a few occasions to separate in the third quarter. Billerica, however, stopped the Rangers on a pair of trips inside the 30-yard line, leaving the deficit at five entering the final stanza.

Gus O’Gara corralled in a 14-yard reception to get Billerica inside the 10-yard line, and then moments later Murnane rumbled in for the 10-yard, go-ahead touchdown and a 16-13 lead. After Billerica recovered the ensuing squib kick, it got insurance. Gentile rushed for eight yards and then plowed in from 13 yards out to put the visitors on top 23-13.

The Rangers had a chance to answer as a Shane Eason 44-yard catch and run helped the hosts up inside the 10. Billerica’s defense stood tall once again as a sack by Cole Dillon forced Methuen into a long field goal try that came up short.

Methuen went in front 10-0 in the first quarter courtesy of a 17-yard touchdown run by Shane Eason. The Rangers stretched the lead to 10-0 on a 27-yard field goal by Omar Aboutoui but a Judd Dorival six-yard touchdown run got Billerica back within a score.

Aboutoui, however, struck again this time kicking home a 35-yard field goal to put Methuen up 13-8 at the half.

BILLERICA — Billerica High’s boys soccer program has established itself as one of the state’s elite, and its recent success is somewhat new.

“We can score goals,” said Billerica soccer coach John Vassallo. “So that helps. We’ve got some guys that we moved around, couple guys that played midfield last year that are playing central defense this year, and we have a goalie who’s a junior and is coming into his own. He has been tremendous also.”

Last fall, the Indians reached the Div. 2 playoff field as the No. 11 seed with a record of 11-2-5, only to be bounced in the Round of 32 (a 2-1 loss to Nauset).

“It really helped motivate us, the loss last year,” said Vassallo. “Because we had a home game, so we thought we were going to be able to go a little bit further than we did. But reality kicked in, finding a program like Nauset, who has always been really good. They knew how to win in the playoffs, and we didn’t. These guys dedicated themselves for the summer, and said our goal is to win the league, then get a good draw for the tournament, get further than the first round. We want to win a few games in the tournament, and I think our ranking will help that. The loss definitely motivated us (the last) year.”

Now Billerica has a firm grasp on the top overall seed in this year’s Div. 2 power rankings at 16-1-1, with a team rating of 3.2322.

The showing is due to emergence of stars such as senior midfielder and reigning Merrimack Valley Conference (Small) Player of the Year Brian Jones (10 goals, six assists), and other standouts such as junior forwards Jason Xintaropoulos (12 goals, nine assists in league play), Ryan Jacob (25 goals, 10 assists), and goaltender Riley Donovan (seven goals surrendered, 6.5 shutouts).

The Indians have found a winning formula, and it starts with their core group.

“Last year in the playoffs, we were hoping we’d make it further,” said Jones. “When we lost to Nauset in the first round, it wasn’t what we were hoping for. Then this year, we won our first game. Our second game, we lost, and that kind of flipped the switch for us. We kind of realized how everything is supposed to be picked up, and ever since then, we haven’t lost a game.”

Billerica has dominated its Merrimack Valley Conference games, with impressive victories over North Andover (a 3-0 win Oct. 12) and Lowell (1-0 Oct. 17).

“It’s definitely good to keep track of (the seedings), know where you are according to everything else,” Jones said. “But we can’t let it get to our heads. Just because we’re the one seed, it doesn’t mean we can’t have our best game. But you can see it, every other team wants to beat us since we’re so highly-ranked.”

The team’s lone loss was a 3-0 defeat to Bedford in early September, which sits second among Div. 2 schools in the power rankings at 9-2-4 with a team rating of 3.0843. Vassallo believes his group has grown from that game. A rematch with the Buccaneers is possible.

“I hope (for a second battle) anyways,” chuckled Vassallo. “They actually gave us a good eye-opener, where it was our second game of the season, so we were trying to figure out our defense. They were much more mature than us playing-wise. My group was young and inexperienced at that level, so it was actually a good game for us, where we learned a lot about how to play defense, and how to get going. It motivated us, because every once in a while, one of the kids will bring up the Bedford game.”

When the pairings are unveiled Wednesday, Billerica will be ready for whichever opponent comes its way.

“We need some rest, because we have some injuries and we’re a little bit tired,” Vassallo said. “I think the seniors and the captains have to step up, and say this is where we worked so hard — to get here. I think it’s about seeing if we can keep it going.”
